Many cultures used (and still do in certain parts of the world) chewing sticks, which is exactly what it sounds like. A thick plant you use to get the gunk off your teeth. A precursor to the toothbrush. Many cultures also used a mixture of herbs and charcoal.
As someone who works in the dental field, I can tell you dental instruments have not really changed all that much. Sometimes I look at the instruments we have and I think to myself "that just looks medieval!", usually the forceps for extractions make me think this, lol.
YAYYYY! I am in the dental field and I promise we appreciate this so much hahaha I am so proud of you! I'm just curious, what changes have you noticed?!
I’m so happy to live nowadays with modern dentistry! (And I’ll be done Invisalign in a couple months...I can’t wait. I’m 44 and wish I would have done it more than a decade ago)
Don't use charcoal or baking soda. It's abrasive. You'll literally just be removing the top layer of your teeth, making them more prone to cavities (and at some point they'll actually start looking more yellow since the inner part of teeth is darker).
@@lizzyL59 Cloth diapers are not like rags. We use them with our son. There are some different styles available now, but lots of people (like us) still use the old school basic cloth diapers as they are the cheapest. But yes, disposables haven't actually been around that long.

I have braces and i clean better by thread floss and interdental brush than with waterpik since i actually scrap off plaque with floss and brush with toothpaste between teeth with interdental.. Waterpik is only good for rinsing food particles but that i can also do with floss..
@@standingfortruth4043 my dentist recommended using my waterpik along the gumline to prevent plaque buildup on the edges. You can’t see a difference but the amount of plaque near your gums is reduced.
This should really be 100 years of Dental Hygiene. “Dental Care” is a whole lot more than brushing, braces, and white teeth. Somewhat of a slap in the face to the dental community.
Not good. The bristles are too rough for your delicate gums. The wood retaIns water and harbours bacteria, better to stick with nylon bristles and plastic handles. Maybe invest in an electric toothbrush if you are conscious about using plastic.
The headgear Katy Perry wore was a parody of headgear worn in the 80’s. The music video is set in the 80’s and isn’t meant to be a reflection of the dental practise of the time (around 2011)
I hate how sexist these ads were and how they preyed on womens insecurities(caused by society itself) for things that shouldnt even be gendered...seems like ads were the only area where women were represented in the past, if you can call it that
Asdf Ghjkl The ads didn’t just talk about women, they talked about men too. (Stop looking for things in the past to be angry about. There’s already enough of that going around)
Asdf Ghjkl True. At that time they used as a way to get people to buy their products. This is still done today with their “over exaggerative” commercials. I thought it was funny lol. NOBODY has that hard a time meeting someone they like (and if they do it won’t be because their breath 😆or could I be wrong lol?)I’m sure everyone knows someone with bad hygiene who still got married.
I use the same toothbrush for over a year now and my whole family uses one bathroom and my mother hates going shopping for anything dental care cus she's addicted on saving money. Kinda gross but yea.
Actually, I have another 1960s fact. In 1967 Roger Taylor (Drummer for the band Queen.) studyed dentistry in college. However, he soon became bored with it and switched to full time music with the band Smile. (Soon to be Queen.)

Charcoal Toothpaste is very Very bad. It damages your tooth enamel. The product is way too abrasive. Oil pulling isn't much better. It's sheer quackery. Some of that oil can be left behind those hard to get to places in your teeth and gums and cause decay. If you have to rinse or swish with anything other than mouthwash, then the alternative is a teaspoon of salt in warm water for 20-30 seconds. And my problem up until recently was over flossing. I use to floss 3 times a day and was told my my dentist that's a definite no No. Flossing more than once a day can lead to gum damage and Gingivitis ( I'm still trying to get use to flossing once a day. And not to be so OCD about it) 👄
Really? I really felt like i noticed a difference in my breath and whiteness with oil pulling and I started off skeptical. I always rinsed with water and mouthwash after
Mineral Same here, oil pulling actually does work. It literally took all that black gunk out of my cavity in my tooth in two weeks. I’m pretty sure people who deny it haven’t tried it lol (-:
It's weird I think that quite soon they're gonna have to add a new decade to these vids: the 2020s
2020 just sounds so weird to me . Like so futuristic for reason or is that just me ?
elizabeth lemire same lol I don’t think I’m gonna be able to write a 2 as the third number
liz yup
Roxanne Matheson I know! I’m so used to writing 201_ but now we’ll have to try to get used to it since the new year is coming soon.
We won't know what trends were popular in the 2020s until the 2030s though 😛
Was kind of expecting a video on dental tools and how they evolved to what they are today... Got an ad for toothpaste.
Tetra Sky yes... this is just one big ad for Tom’s, Crest and Colgate!

Listerine honestly is still a must in dental health ✔️ The original one though, not all the sugary mint flavored ones.

"100 years of dental care" more like "100 years of dental commercials" ;p
I agree
weird flex but I have flossed every single night without fail since the end of may 2015 and this seems like one of the few places I can share that
Nice!!

You forgot to add the bamboo biodegradable toothbrushes in the 2010s
True
And tooth paste pill things
The WHAT
I'm so glad someone else was thinking this

Am I the only one who was irrationally bothered by the girl who was fake brushing?
I'm the OPPOSITE
I'm bothered by seeing people brushing for real!
Ikr it bothered me too
No, it really irritated me
No
same
Did we just skip over the sonicare craze? Like most people I know own sonicares and that feels like an important milestone missed
What's that
why am I so bothered by the fake brushing
Yeah for some reason it makes me mad
Same here!😣
they aren't doing it rightt
Same
Shocking how women were to blame for bad breath in commercials.
Yeah. With ads targeted at men said bad breath cost them their careers. Lol
so no one gonna talk about how they used to drink listerine as cold and flu medicine, i can already feel the acid in my chest

That's what Jan from Grease was singing lmao
I never knew till now

Invisalign came out after I had already gotten braces, and when my youngest sister had it instead.... I was so jealous!
sweatpantsprincess honestly I would have been fine with regular braces at my age, as long as I get my teeth fixed!
And yet some ppl still can’t learn to use this form of basic hygiene 🤦🏻♀️
The toothbrush scene in Bring It On was completely improv-ed.
don't know about the oil pulling, but i got a tube of the charcoal toothpast and it actually made my teeth whiter. was really nice
Oh really? I'll try it then. I was hesitant on it at first.

You should do 100 years of diapers. That’d be interesting
Not really because untill I think the 70s people just used rags as diapers

Watch it in a slower playback speed

I didn’t see the water pick...
It was mentioned near the end

Love you Allure❤️❤️❤️
This reminded me to put my retainer in for the night, thanks
