I worked as a quality control person for Hormel at a large plant in Atlanta, Georgia and the Spam line was one of my many duties. I can say that this is all very accurate information. The inputs for the Spam are nearly identical to the meats used for the Cure 81 Dinner Hams. SPiced hAM or SPAM is actually a really high quality product in my opinion.

Gary I worked for Hormel in Ft.Worth TX in quality control and product development. Did you happen to know a Steve J. that was a forman in Ft Worth after that plant was closed he was sent to Hotlantia? I am surprised they did not say that all orders are shorted if all orders were totally filled the price of pork would be so high no one could afford it. Also, they did not say Hawaii has the highest amount of Spam sales, that there are warehouses full of it there. Nice to run across a fellow Hormelite...

SPAM was invented and originally processed in Autin MN. They still make it there and even have a museum to tour. Been there, it was fun!
I remember how great I thought it was to eat fried spam and rice with my hands at my Philipino friends house as a kid. The thought of eating it cold is gross, but when it's sliced and fried it's similar to bacon/salty porky goodness.

Back in the 70s, My grandpa who was a cook in the army back in WWII always told me that the US government wanted a cheap protein to feed soldiers that was shelf stable so it could be included in MREs and that Hormel corp., makers of SPAM, was awarded the contract. He also told me that the word SPAM is an acronym that means Special Processed Army Meat. I was a child so I believed him.

I switched to using SPAM instead of salted pork in my dishes.
I cube it and use it in soups and in Gumbo.
Being from south Louisiana a lot of my friends and family member
were taken a back when I said I put this in my gumbo but after tasting
my Gumbo with SPAM they add this to theirs as well. I have tasted every flavor but
the one I use is the low salt version.

Question - I just opened a can and the color oxidized rather quickly . It was no longer pink. Do they add coloring to make it look pink instead of brown?
Sodium nitrite not only used to preserve meat bur for coloring of meat

@@tracer740Monday April 6th, 2020. I had a slice of Spam (lightly fried) on Brioche Toast (lightly toasted) with one Egg (lightly scrambled) a slice sharp cheddar and some Japanese Mayo and YEAH... It was really good. No Bacon was harmed in the making of this breakfast sandwich. 😋

Give it a try. I would suddest slicing it about 1/4 inch thick and frying it, then put it on a plate with scrambled eggs. Or same prep on a sandwich. Once you've tried it both ways, you'll have a feel of what it was like to grow up poor in the 1970s.
I had spam today. I tried it... I fried it in thin slices( 1/4 inch thick). I put pepper and garlic on it and served it with fried eggs. I immediately regretted it. The salt & grease were too much! !.. The grease floating on top of my stomach acid was literally threatening me all day. I'm here to see just what exact I ate.

Pork shoulder is usualy a slightly cheaper cut of meat . But tasty nevertheless. I always have a tin in the cupboard. As standby . Its nice as a breakfast with eggs and toast tomato . Also makes a good sandwich with a few crisps quite tasty.

About two months ago , I sent 96 cans of Spam [ lower sodium ] to a friend in the Philippines ! She of course shared it with friends , family and others . Filipinos in general LOVE Spam as well as Corned Beef in a can .

The stuff you should know guys did a podcast on spam. It’s legit, nothing weird in it.
My dad who flew B-29 bombers in WWII told me there was a six-month period where the chow hall tent only served Spam, for breakfast Spam and instant eggs, and for dinner Spam with instant potatoes with beans or peas. Sometimes he would sneak off base and get coconut crab with cabbage at a local native restaurant there on Tenneian Island, or he would get local fried fish. To this day they still love Spam on the islands because Uncle Sam would give the locals huge pallets of canned Spam. I like a Spam sandwich once in a while or for breakfast fried with eggs and toast.

I like classic SPAM. It is very versatile. It used to be cheap to buy but is not inexpensive today. I also like canned corned beef. The only issue I have with both products is the preservatives and high salt content.
Have it for the first time in 2019 I'm 24 now but never again will I get it, lovely video and info.

When I was a kid back in the 50s my mom would fry up some for dinner and I HATED IT! Sooooo much salt! I haven't had it since but after watching this I'm gonna check out the label to see if it has just six ingredience. I'm willing to give it a try.

Stir fry it with your favorite vegetables. Spambled eggs. Infinite uses. Once, I even cut it into perfect thin squares and made raviolis. A tip: if you can't finish a whole can at once, wrap the remaining chunk tightly in plastic. It not only will take up less space in the fridge but also will retain its color. If you try covering the can itself, there's still enough oxygen inside to discolor it. (Ham at Xmas, yes, but never heard of having ham for Easter.) Great video, as always, Babble Top!!!!

@@BabbleTop I cut the SPAM into cubes roughly 1cm. Smaller is better, but that's more work. Put a little oil into a pan and briefly fry the SPAM until the color changes. Remove and add the beaten egg mixture, with green onions, garlic, and something called dried parsnip. These little bits add a rubbery/crunchy texture. If I have asparagus, I might use that instead of the green onions. Season with salt and pepper after the eggs are done. I don't like to put salt into raw egg. I forget why, but I tried it once and it was weird. Go to an Asian market and ask for dried parsnip, or you can show them the Chinese name: 蘿蔔乾. Hope it works out for you! I tried it and dont really like it. Too much sodium for me so its a no-no for me. I know many people in the U.S. love this stuff and grew up on spam. But its very different for me. My Mom always cooked from scratched when i was young so no spam was not really part of our diet when i was younger. Besides, i have health problem that makes not to good for me to eat red meat and high sodium foods like spam. I tried it some years ago and didnt really like the taste of it and im basically a vegetarian and almost vegan. Its easier for me to digest that type of food and not get sick a good portion of the day by eating to much high sodium foods. It gives me aweful migraines.

We have SPAM in my country (it is called ZVAN) but it is the same thing. My favourite use for it is to use it in meatballs instead of regular minced pork. It takes taste to the next level and makes the meatballs so much juicier.

Its normal when you cook meat. Espiacelly if you use the bone with it. It happens when i cook chicken or turkey to make a broth with it. The more carcasses you use, you may get gelatin depending on the amount of water you use. It also happens with pork. Here in Canada, they use the broth and reduce the broth and cool it down a bit and put it in the fridge and the broth seperat from the fat and lots of people like it.

What esle would you expect ...this is the new free self promotion type of advertising...they spend all their budget on production and non on TV time or print advertising.
Spam was originally created to use up pork butt(shoulder)Which at the time was a waste meat.The ham used was trimmings of the hams that Hormel was popular for at the time.Hormel did change the recipe recently and added the potato starch to limit the jelly gelatin in the can.

BabbleTop Before the recipe change,you could dice/fry it up.Then add some flour and the gelatin and make a roux.Add some milk and you had Spam gravy.It went good on bread or biscuits.Like ham gravy.Its a little too dry now.

If you have trouble getting it out of the can poke some holes in the bottom. It breaks the vacuum that holds it in.
Either Spam egg🍳 sandwich 🥪(Toasted 🍞 Bread), or Spam eggs and Rice🍚 with Soy sauce and Black Pepper. However, my favorite way to eat Spam is
(Cinnabon 🍞 Bread) French toast and Spam! With Peanut 🥜 butter, Butterworth syrup. An sometimes fresh smashed strawberries with Cool Whip 😋 and ALWAYS! ALWAYS! Have 🍎 Apples with French toast.
It's not as good as it was when I was growing up 70 years ago.

It's great in fried rice.
Cubed up and put into mac and cheese is also really good.
Cubed small and put into a pasta salad, with cooked penne pasta, coleslaw, sweetcorn, tomatoes, peppers, chopped chillies to taste, grated carrot, chopped apple tossed in lemon juice, few raisins and salted peanuts and some plain yoghurt, if needed. Chopped celery is good in it. Grated Parmesan over. Olive oil optional. Serve on a bed of chopped lettuce. Great if you have some prawns to go in as well. Serve with wedges of lemon and well chilled.

I would suggest when you open a tin of Spam you turn it over and put a one inch hole with a heavy duty style tin opener in the base, that way you don’t get a vacuum effect. I use a fork to gently ease it out the tin and it works fine.

Fry it and dip in mustard.
Fry the spam and set aside ( in oven on warm to retain temp ).... Next : make the toast .. thickly sliced home made bread.. butter both sides and place on griddle or fry pan.. toast to golden on both sides... make a sandwich with mustard .. ( or even mustard and a drop of mayo ) Delicious .. and if you want to elevate to next level.. add sliced tomato and fresh crisp red leaf lettuce .. But really just the toasted bread, fried spam and mustard is a winner !!

For your older relatives, Spam is soft, and easy for them to chew. It's a good source of protein and calories, and is shelf stable.
