just want to say that after buying this mic before watching this review you CAN adjust the monitoring volume independent of the PC output volume. this was in possible in windows 10 via the sound > playback > control panel in the menu where you would adjust the sampling rates, you can adjust their volumes independently in the levels tab. not sure about macos though unfortunately.
I just want to let you know you are single-handedly the most helpful source of information for buying microphones. Anytime I’m looking for a new mic I always check to see if you have reviewed it yet. Thank you for all the hard work!
Conducting business via song. While reviewing a microphone. Towards a company that sells products mainly for the music industry. It's as appropriate as it's ever going to be. Great review.
Don't know if it is already known, but you can adjust the monitoring volume of this mic by going to the legacy sound settings then playback, properties, and finally levels. Once there, headphone volume adjusts all volume when monitors are plugged into the mic, and mic volume adjusts the monitoring levels. I set mine at 5-10 as it's too loud at 100%.
I completely agree with the conclusion. I had this mic, I liked the sound, but sold it because of the inability to adjust monitoring levels. When singing or playing acoustic guitar, everything is fine, but micing up an amp is impossible. Even at very moderate amp levels, the direct monitoring was too loud. If I wanted to play-along and record to a track, I just couldn't do it.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the mic. It's always fun to hear what people think of the mics and their applications. Hope you have a great weekend.
Thanks for the review! I actually bought this as an upgrade from my blue snowball ice since I found it for $20. I'd definitely would be more critical if I purchased it for the $80-$120 price point that I see it right now for new, but for me at $20, I don't have any complaints.
I bought this mic in November for zoom. This review is on point. None of the accessories lasted more than a month. But the sound for spoken word is decent
The version without the X chromosome was one of my first mics - I liked it then, and I pretty much like this one too. Actually good off-axis and plosive rejection, I thought. And it looks like they fixed the crappy buttons and blinding blue bulb. Hard to get excited about it with all the competition at that price and below, but it is not bad at all, and better than some that cost more.
Great video as usual brother! I got this a couple of days ago and i observed that the headphone output reproduced the sound rather weirdly, when i switched the headphones output and connected them to my laptop jack, the quality was kinda ok, also this mic was so prone to interference, especially when touching it or moving it around that it was really obnoxious, i believe my unit was particularly faulty, so I sent it back, and instead ordered something else I wanted to try! Thankyou so much for all these great videos! I was waiting for this one since a long time! Also, when it comes to comparisons, i think the seiren mini is really a compelling option tbh, however, the lack of headphone output on that one is its biggest flaw i suppose, the NT Usb Mini is kinda good, its a new microphone, nice sample rate options, but the mid forward tone on that one is not for everyone, however with the software or post processing the audio can definitely be manipulated, the yeti nano does offer some nice competition to the 2500x, but the 2500x was kinda bit more open sounding, interestingly, i think the original sounded a bit better than the newer version, i feel that the 2020 usb+ sounded nice too, then between the NT Usb and wave 3, i think the nt usb sounds fine, but its still 16 bit and in today’s time, i think we need everything to be at least 24 bit, bcz no one knows when are they gonna be using something for a video, all in all, the 2500x is a nice to have option, but i think for someone who already has some nice xlr microphones or is planning to have some of them like the 240, NT1, etc, this microphone is not needed for those people, the accessories are truly not upto the mark, and well....its ok, but nothing very special!
@@Podcastage So True brother!, if someone really wants to get good sound and is willing to spend some cash on an xlr setup, they would have so many good options on their hands, the blue ember, the lewitt 240, akg p420,220, AT2035, its a whole great world of them and they all beat this one hands down!
As someone currently using the old silver ATR2500 this offers a lot of context for the rest of the mics in your recent reviews! Many thanks Bandrewman, sincerely appreciated! Oddly the original ATR2500 sounds more nasally and with better presence than the X, so this just about immediately disqualifies the X from my consideration since the smooshy, distant sound of the ATR2500 (not to mention the poor plosive rejection) are my main gripes with it.
I used the OG ATR2500 before switching to the 2035. Definitely a good mic for the price. Might not be Audio Technica's heavy hitters, but certainly worth it. Totally "inoffensive"
Regarding turning off zero-latency monitoring or making it quieter idk if this will work on the atr2500x-USB but it works with the blue yeti. --- 1 / Open "Control Panel" in Windows. 2 / Search for "Sound" and select it. 3 / Make sure you're on the "Playback" tab and find your microphone. 4 / Select it and click the "Properties" button. 5 / Go to levels and you should see both "Speakers" and "Microphone". 6 / Adjust the "Microphone" setting to your liking. --- On the blue yeti this changes the volume of the zero-latency monitoring. Don't know if it works on the atr2500x-USB but I'd say it's worth a shot.
What an awesome video, man! This changed my trajectory here with buying a microphone (still looking for one to record vocals, but just for fun so i won't spend a lot with one). Ps.: I liked the sound of the ATR2500x, though.
Thanks for the excellent review! I just bought this one at a leading US online retailer for under $120. I need the headphone port, but don't need to hear myself loud. Hence, it should be a perfect fit for me for zoom meetings and voice-overs. 😁
ATR2500x-USB sounds really great and full. We also got this one. I knew this one was gon be a great purchase. Did a couple of recent songs with this one. It’s awesome! I also have another mic “MXL Studio 1 I think” dat is also great! I liked about two more u got on here, but I forgot the names. Dey also sounded fuller (in meye opinion). Now the rest to me sounded to more on the treble side with no bass or low end “if I’m saying dat right.” But overall this is a great video and I’m glad I got to listen to other ones even dat last more expensive one which I don’t really like the sound of. Thanks! I really appreciate!!!⚡️🌪⚡️
Wow, this is timely! I was considering this mic and just searched on UA-cam to see if you had a video on it and sure enough you just uploaded one a few hours ago! I'm mainly debating between this and the AT2020USB+. Also curious about the upcoming Tascam TM-250U for $100. Thank you!
Man, this channel is a real gem. Not only is it incredibly, and I mean INCREDIBLY detailed, but it's also got a lot of personality and is rather funny. Love it Even at £53 in the UK, I feel like the Seiren mini is better value for most
The original ATR2500-USB sounds similar to the Seiren Mini. Now I don't exactly have at rained ear as I am not an audio engineer or professional, just dabbled in the headphone audiophile hobby for a bit. Had the Senn HD650 in my collection some time back but replaced it with the Audeze LCD2. The original ATR2500 is much brighter and sounds more "compressed" (I don't know the term) and feels like it tapers off on the lower freqs compared to the ATR2500X. Depending on how you like your sound the original might be more pleasing to those who like a louder, crisper sound but if you prefer a more airy, fuller sound the ATR2500X is obviously better. Couldn't really test for sibilants and plosives based on the tested mic recordings, but I like how the ATR2500X sounds very similar to the Yeti Nano and the NT-USB. I also find it sounds comparable to the nice-sending XLR options like the AKG mic and the other ATRs. I actually think it sounds better than the Elgato Wave 3, which is more expensive. Elgato is terribly sensitive though it seems based on your settings but has less ploives. The ATR2500X sounds pretty comparable to the most expensive Rode NT1 in the list (outside of the Neumann). I would say the AKG mic was actually the best value of the entire caboodle, but it's XLR so you have to factor that into the equation if what you're after is convenience and an all-in-one setup like many of us plebs here.
If it helps anyone, I have the Yeti Nano and the ATR2500x for use on a Samsung S7 tab via a USB-C charge through hub for video calls and other stuff. The ATR2500x clicks over to whatvever sample rate is required by the particular app or setting on the S7 tab and the volume contols also control the levels of the S7. The Yeti Nano does neither of these things and routinely gets in a knot with its sample rates misaligned. Also, the Yeti Nano monitors the mic signal way too loud versus the ATR2500x which seems just right to me. Both mics allow the volume level to be adjusted but the balance between the mic signal and the incoming audio (from Zoom or whatever) remains the same, i.e. they both go up to down together. For these reasons, for me at least, the Yeti Nano is unusable on the Android(v12)/S7 tab setup but the ATR2500x works really well. I agree that the ATR2500x stand seems flimsy, but so far so good here.
Weirdly, I did feel the old 2500 sounded nearly as good as the new one. The tone is really similar. My feeling after listening to many tests is sampling rate is only really noticeable on instruments, especially high gain sounds. For voice, most are suitable, it's just about finding a mic that makes you sound good imo. The Lewitt and Elgato sounded very smooth and similar, though a little quiet(makes sense since I think Lewitt collaborated with them).
I beg to differ. The old 2500 was very bright, and the low end had a lot of cutoff. The newer 2500X sounds warmer with a much airier soundstage. The two sound nothing like each other frankly. I agree on the Lewitt and Elgato, much quieter, I like that but I did prefer the tone of the ATR2500X, but it is bad with plosives it picks those up compared to the Lewitt and Elgato.

hello sir, I really love your reviews. I want a suggestion because I think you are the best for suggesting this. Currently I have a BM - 800 or Neewer NW - 700 microphone and there is a lot of background hiss with a cheap usb soundcard. I want to upgrade so should I buy the Focusrite scarlett solo and use it with nw - 700 or I should buy M audio M track solo and AKG - P120 ? PLEASE ANSWER MY QUESTION
