- Craig Hardin shows a ridge detail that involves double locking the metal. This is a traditional technique that ensures water tightness.

This is actually a nice job double locking a ridge seam. It's a lot harder than it looks, and and it's not done much any more,I think because painted or mill finish steel does not have the malleability of traditional standing seamraw metals like copper, zinc, lead.I would say 26 gauge steel is the linit for this kind of detailing as the next jump to 24 gauge would make it almost impossible to do with these methods.I understand the comments concerning the distressing of the metal , but traditionally it was atrade off between a texbook cosmetic appearance and an essentially weather and windproof ridge lock(no ridge cap could ever hope to be as tight as this).Part of the"beauty is in the effectiveness of the seal and this applicator deserves a lot of credit because what he did is about as good as it gets with a steel medium. If you relly want to see roofs with cosmetic imperfections take a good look at soldered copper panels on a large application sometime, oil caning all over the place, but still so beautiful. We do mostly vented ridges now , but we used to do a lot of single lock ridges(1 1/2 standup, same amount bent over the top and sqweezed into a seam) whitch are a lot easier and I would say more common, but leave an exposed edge, but still a very tight ridge.I understand all the comments but people want different methods for different reasons so why not give praise for what is a well done application.
Do you moonlight as a butcher?
There are several methods to do any detail on roofing installations. What Craig is doing is old time metal forming. Somethiing you don't see much of anymore in our world of mass production, and subbing work out to guys getting paid by the square. Yes there are easier ways to do this, but I like your work Craig. This is how it's done in Europe, where it all started.
Richard McKuhen im working that way in Norway at the moment. I can say they did realy good job 👍
In Slovakia, this is old too… there is no time for things like this. But old roofs are like that. Hard to imagine, how hard work it must be.
COOL...old school....in Massachusetts...osha would be on your ass...big time...politically correct police...fining YA out of business...
What's the large clamping bender used on ridge?
Увидев этот ролик я ещё раз убедился в том что мы намного аккуратнее делаем эту работу.
GLAD I NEVR GOT INTO METAL ROOFING...WHAT A PAIN IN THE ASS !!!!!
lol! ya even if you like doing it
Yo Vincent
hey fellow metalsmith!
I've done that with zinc but never steel. Hate that detail it's a pain
This is a stupid way to make a ridge.
1. it offers zero venting.
2. looks like shit
3. more labor intensive than Z bar and ridge caps.

Hey buddy use the Google Translate to do comment...
This is an incredible set of skills. I’m wondering how ventilation is achieved on such a roof? Specifically in a Canadian climate where we have extremely hot temperatures and frigid cold. Could you share?
It’s probably a closed cell foam filled roof.they require no ventilation
What gauge metal are you using?

I have a unique need on a project I'm currently running in Charleston and this video was the only one I could find which featured how to crimp the ridge of a home, and so it was the foundation for my discovery process for this project. Some answers to questions I saw in the comments and didn't see answers to:
1) What is the blue/yellow tool featured in the video?
A) The product is RAU 104 Tin Edge Claws. According to a Stortz represenatative, they get calls 12x a year from this video looking to source the equipment, and it was discontinued about 4 years ago. An alternative is Stubai 45 degree Beveled Deck Tong from the Stortz website.
2) Why would you do this over ridge cap?
A) Hand crimped roofs are the only roofing systems I still see functioning today from over 100 years after installation. It's a lot more work to do this type of ridge detail, but you may choose to offer a crimped ridge as either a solution focused on longevity, or, as in my case, as a requirement from a governing historical body. Ridge caps are not allowed to be installed in my project's jurisdiction, and thus I'm locked in to a hand crimped finish regardless of what I'd personally prefer.
3) What about ventilation?
A) Ventilation for roofing systems can vary; in the case of the structure I'm working on, the house has gable ventilation, and hasn't had any ridge ventilation for the past 120 years. In the case where it's an open ceiling, for example, over a front porch or back patio with exposed rafters, there is no need for ventilation.
Hope this helps save somebody some time!
Man that doesn't look a professional job
No thanks....z’s and ridge cap...
Have you ever experienced paint chipping when seaming ridges?
And would the accu seamer work for seaming a hip or ridge?
rocking the all stubai kit nice
Never come apart, but man it’ll never expand and contract properly either, lol. Still id take that over asphalt shingles any day of the week. Pretty cool technique.
I think the roof kinda floats since it all clipped on.
fixed clips and sliding clips take care of that
when you bend that ridge up you need to tighten the seam because where the seam bends it will crack (as you can see i is very sharp. just hammer the shit out if it before you lift the ridge all the way up.
my english isnt that good because im a Finnish dude. hire me😂
100% chance he cracked the seam.
Thank you for the excuse for doing it the lazy ass crappy way....
Metalworking ----- the process of shaping and reshaping metals to create useful objects, parts, assemblies, or large scale structures....i.e beating the piss, out of metal....
The ribs dont line up fromm side to side.. i dont like that method at all. Ive installed a few n that looks pretty sloppy.
Can't but it down ...but I prefer snap lock and the seams get pinched in the end ..no banging and it looks wonderful
You can't line up the seams on a welted ridge . Too much thickness!
Also you shouldn't bend the seems like that . If they pinch they will crack.
Craig, Great detailed video. What boots you're wearing?
Yeh like Spider-Man , no fear either.
No I just use the standard trims provided for ridge cap! You can’t vent a closed ridge like that either
How do you vent the room with no ridge vent?
Maximum
how is the opening of seaming done(not to traditional technique), when peb building is relocated? will the sheet become absolute while opening due to post-opening leakage? also, pl provide a video if possible. Rahul, Tx from India
Great video.. i’ve learned how it is. thanks
I need to know the name of the panel folder you are using? The blue and yellow one,,, please?
What gauge steel was that roof and what type of metal? Was it painted? What is the warranty? Were panels made onsite or fabricated by manufacturer? Thanks!
My good fellow I'm not telling you anything

LOVE IT. METAL ROOF ARE NICE LOOKING.WATER TIGHT IF DONE CORRECTLY.
This is actually pretty cool👍
Old school. Not great in todays world. No venting and on long panel runs this will only Contribute to canning. Still it’s a 100% watertight seam. Try that on some 24g
How is this roof being vented? BTW, a friend of mine used to have an Auto Body Shop and his slogan was "You Bend'em We Mend'em"
Type of insulation used will determine if the roof cavity needs to be vented. Closed-cell spray foam does not require roof ventilation for example.
Time consuming,and no ventilation?
With double lock peaks, the gable ends are usually vented.
yes, It is much too time consuming for lazy roofers
@@beardedroofer I appreciate the clarification!
@N C
Hey, sorry, didn't mean to be offensive.
@Efrain Martinez I said yes.... so who was being, offensive and about what?
Have a nice day....
I get the creeps watching them so near the edge
Looks like shit just use a metal ridge cap.
This is not so proffesional and nice work…
cold blooded with it.
What gauge metal?
Could you recommend me a whole kit to be able to do my first roof “European method” like this!???? Super tight 😮😮
Just use FlexSeal
Do you do hips the same way? I've done dbl lock peaks but was taught to cut the seam at the peak, making excess metal part of the peak lock.
26 gauge painted steel made on site from a pan former.
I wish I could get this type of roof done on my house but there’s not many company’s that do mechanical standing seam roofing in my area . There’s company’s that do snap lock , corrugated and the nail or screw type but not a mechanical genuine standing Seam not alone old school workmanship.
棟の納まりはハゼにして良い仕事していると思います。勉強に成ります!。屋根の上は怖く無いですか!。
Great job
That is the best to make a roof. 👍
how come the ridges do not line up from side to side ? 🤔
Because the seam would be thick and harder to hammer
Nice work I always wondered how that gets done!
Greate work John.
Awesome job
Muy machaco ese sistema de sellado, tanta tegnologia y a punta de porra😁
Wow you really beat the piss out of that seam
Old school way bud.
Metalworking ----- the process of shaping and reshaping metals to create useful objects, parts, assemblies, or large scale structures....ie beating the piss metal....
Fantastic job 👍👍👍
Толковые ребята!

Too much work for no reason just put a ridge Metal and Call it a day
Is that standard aluminum coil stock?
Any rake detail video's?
This is CUTE for a barn. But not my house. Cap allows vent, especially for hips. Been installing standing seam for 12 yrs, gotta say, some people are more worried about opposite side panels lining up than actual correct function roofs. But hey, to each their own
14 yrs of doing it, the crappy, lazy ass way.... have fun with that...
Looks like crap you think lining up the two roof surfaces so the ridges would match is 10. But clearly you don't think that far into the job. As well how is the ridge supposed to breath. Whoever taught was not a skilled informed tradesmen. #FAIL
Have you ever installed a traditional standing seam roof? The panels should align but you always fold em different directions because otherwise there'd be too much material to be able to fold it. There's no need for ventilation as long as the roof is vented through other means. But stick to installing ugly ass ridge caps.
@@Anabolatant im sorry you where poorly trained the roof was crap and that you think it's not says customers have paid for inferior work
Invalid job..🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
That looks like CRAP
Oil Canning already appearing
Lots of work and also impressive
nice job
Great job 👍
You Can save material doing it, but it is too much work.

Damn!! Simply horrible. 👎🏼
Bravo
And ridge caps?
It don't get ridge cap ...it's sealed tighter than ducks hat band lmao
I install standing seem and this makes me cringe you you need to use J trip and hook the ridge cap to it and pan the tops of you sheets the same height of the rib it will be water tight and look like a professional job
My house was built in 46 metal roof and i just had it painted as i was up there checking things out i believe this guy may have hammered my roof seem lol
This is the most watertight method
Ridge cap my man
いい仕事ですね👍👍👍
Газету бы еще постелил, такая толщина метала не годится.
So where’s the ridge vent?
You have a super water tight ridge now but now air escaping?
If you put in actual roof vents then it’s pointless.🤷♂️
Stfu you know nothing
Neither do you.
Mike Brewster shut up dummy
@@quebec801 try me ?? Ask me a question sweetheart.. lol I’ve been doing all aspects of sheet metal for the past 18 years. Go on buddy.
R 62lean ventilation on a barn lol
So many hammer marks and dints. My customers complain about using the crimping tool for secondary fold on seam for dint marks ...compared to using power seamer. Why not use zbar cleats and then cap ??
Good luck removing anything from that roof with a double seamed joint !! Lol you must be off you rocker.
R 2lain you're a rookie then. Buy some tools ua-cam.com/video/VKPlr9c2N6Y/v-deo.html
true, why seal it the right way?
5:19 seconds ( I don’t try to make things easy on my self)
No you sure don’t. lol
That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve seen.
Doing a double lock seam for the ridge is insane.
Spends 2 hours doing that pointless connection with no ventilation at the ridge.
Or throw down bug screen and $60 worth of ridge cap.
YA GOT TO VENT METAL OR IT WILL SWEAT LIKE A BIG DOG SLOBBERING
Kyle Dean- I’ve seen houses 150 years old with the original standing seam metal roofs that were never vented. They’re standing strong and solid as the day they were built. Explain that
@@kingofepicvlogs4666 old houses are naturally ventilated
Yes nice
Those panels look to have some severe oil canning going on from doing that. 😒
Pack Discipline all standing seam metal roofs will have some sort of canning
plus functionally it is far superior
Schrott.
👍Bravo
What’s wrong with a pre bent ridge cap & how are you venting the attic
Lawrence Degroot they are briandead
Probably Gable vents goof
Interesting..
Hi. What is the name of blue-yellow frame for standing seam? Thanks
@W TF? got a link?
Can you guys recommend a metal roofing company out of Tucson, please? ty
Kovach is in Phoenix
looked like 💩
Good Lord... that is horrid...
You have the right tools to crimp the sheets but you mallet them to kindom-come...
@joecee67more like hand abused :p
@ post a video of your method or someone doing this correctly then...
No safety on
Hahahahaha are you serious
I live in New Jersey but I never see that before we are doing different not like that
They fucked up the ridge lol
New Jersey way is to drop the body and leave ASAP....
I guess that works and all, but where is the attic being vented from? In my opinion ridge cap looks much better and you're not beating the crap out of your new roof. And goes on with much much less effort and time. Each to their own I guess... I prefer doing things the way we do them here in 2020, not the 1830's method.
Looks sloppy
How do you deal with the expansion when the metal heats up if it has no room to move. We cannot do it that way in New England with all our temp variations from hot to cold..
it is actually very very minimal. wont affect in any way. and i live in Finland. weather here,,winter -30 / summer +30 (degrees celcius).
Kurtis Hord Man, you have an awesome website. You can do that work? Pretty incredible.
Lol u dont know shit
How do you deal with the expansion of any standing seam metal roof?
Looks crappy.
Dents. Ridges dont line up looking down at peak.
Not being rude but what a mess
This is far from a mess. They are probably one of most skilled metal roofing companies in the country. I get that that there are tool marks and such but they are clearly focusing on recreating the old school standing seam roofs that were being made (and regularly lasted 100yrs) long before zbar, beutyl tape and such ever existed.
Show us your work. I'll wait...
Just use ridge cap and vent holy moly beat it no one wants to beat it just beat it.
Bravo 👏
