You don’t need a working product to get customers to buy your software, you just need to approach the right customers. Here’s how it works.

Hi Dan, thank you for the video. I have a question, my startup will help video creators find music for film faster by utilising video AI and matching the video data with a database of music genres utilised in award winning films, documentaries and tv commercials and the music database that we are building.
To utilize your framework we need to prove that the software will actually help them find the music faster. How can we do it without code, without the user inserting his video, or any sort of data? We have built a prototype using keynote, but it lacks that wow factor of being able to insert your own data.

compile a preset array in your database that you already have and integrate your "drag & drop" feature using your smaller, preset, chosen clips that implements your idea successfully, showcasing your prototype, and actively encapsulates what the user will be able to do in the future given their investment.
small scale factor growth -> large scale results
      good luck

I would say it is like to build a house to sell. Before you really start digging the ground, better you have a blueprint which you can validate if your idea is correct or not. If your prospect says great and willing to sign a check as some down payment, then and only then you can start building.

      You have a few options
      1) Sue him if you have the right

      3) Pivot and do something else
Or, do nothing and focus on your customer and their problem and learn to move faster.

Hey Dan, I really want to start a SaaS but my main problem is going out and finding people to talk to. Right now I tried cold-emails but found it unsuccessful. Let's say I want to do customer interviews with Accountants. Do I just call local Accountants and ask if they have a few minutes to talk about any current problems they're facing? If you have a video or some resources on this aspect, please let me know as well as anyone else who reads this comment.

    • @danmartell
      @danmartell  6 років тому +1

      Pardeep,
Yep, you cold call ... however, the angel is asking for advice on the problem space your solving for.
Brant & Patrick cover this in The Lean Entrepreneur
I also talk about my stories / strategies if you search Customer Development and my name on Google.

I am not sure how it is like in the USA. However in China, cold calling is almost a wasting of time, and quite unwelcome here, especially you are expecting professional advice. Below is what I would do If I were you.
      1. Spend some time at the sites of your prospects. If you are going to sell your software to restaurants, why don' t you just find a part job to work there? If you are going to sell a SAAS to the finance people, why not work there for a couple of months?
      2. Use google. If your SAAS is aimed to solve a specific problem. Just search like 'how does accountants do ...., software to solve ...., benefits of doing ... with software
      3. Get help from friends, ask them refer you to some professionals or experts.
      4. Don' t forget to prepare a prototype like Dan said before meeting anyone.
      Good luck.

Just great thoughts, Dan. I did exactly the same before coding an EMR software suite for my customers. The difference was that I had my 2 UI designers worked for 2 weeks, finally delivered about 60 screens. When I presented the screen pictures to my prospects, they were very satisfied and started to ask the price, which at that moment, I had nothing coded but the screens only!

When you were in the process of testing Flowtown how much digital marketing was done to drive people to test product and how did you collect specific feedback from them or was the goal to see how many people would pay for the service in general? I ask this because it seems it could be difficult to decide whether effective digital marketing or quality of concept brought that initial group of people. And if you received extensive feedback from the people that were willing to pay, did your target market or service change at all? Thanks Dan! Really appreciate your content as it has been allowing me to gain crucial information that will increase my chances of success as an aspiring first time SaaS founder

Isn't tricking your users into thinking you have a product and commit their time/give you contact and payment info kind of.... illegal? You literally lie to your users and deceive them. Not saying it won't work, just wondering whether it's punishable by law

First one needs to be fully aquatinted with the full SDLC and have a team of people, including coders or find a team of people that have it. Any stupid little project could take a person a month to do the feasibility study.
