  • Come join me on my 48 hour call shift on my OB/Gyn rotation!! I am a fourth year medical student near the end of my medical school education - only 6 weeks to go! I am going into full-spectrum Family Medicine with OB and I wanted more time doing OB and delivering babies prior to the start of residency.

    What is up with all of the people in the comments below bashing doctors? Not everyone goes into the medical field for the money. Some people simply want to bring purpose into their lives by saving those of others. What will happen when you are in need of a doctor? What then? I bet you will be thankful that someone decided to become a doctor then...

      Haven't read the comments apart from the first (yours), but I guess people are complaining how well doctors are paid. And I am happy they are paid well (at least in some of the countries), in my country they are paid below or at the level or survival limit. And THIS is not okay. Doctors and teachers should be paid high salaries.

      Moopse101 I have to agree! Ever since I was a child it's been my dream to be a surgeon. The whole idea of being able to actively commit your life to the health of others really really inspires me. When you realise all you're doing is cutting flesh it's easy to get past being squeamish... I also always told myself I'd love to specialise in OB/GYN as a surgeon as I complete medical school. Let's just get through my GCSE's at this point!

      ***** HAHAHAHA you are soooo angry. It's not even like that. Maybe you should shadow a physician or something before you form your opinions. Unless you already have...in which case I'd say let me step out of your face.

    • @Hwkman4
      @Hwkman4 9 років тому +5

      You definitely have a very verbose vernacular. You might not be angry, but you speak like a radical. There is usually a link between anger and radicalness(if it's a word). How have you observed these things first hand? If it was short of sitting down and watching a physician agonize over which treatment to pursue or if they made the right diagnosis then I'd say your experience did you an injustice.
      I think you understand the system all wrong. Physicians are definitely not minions of the insurance companies. Maybe enemies. maybe slaves. But definitely not fighting for the same thing. I mean think about it at its core. The insurance has already been paid by its clients. So how does an insurance company keep the money they've made? By not paying the physician or anybody else.
      As for big pharma. There are countless physician researchers that come up with CURES to diseases, and big pharma buys the research and then destroys them. Big pharma gets money by how many pills you buy. So it's in their best interest to make treatments, not cures. If you don't sell them your molecule then they use their myriad of lawyers to find a flaw in your patent and have their own submitted, making it a lose-lose. I've seen this first-hand a alarming number of times.
      I can tell you are really intelligent, but I just don't think you've witnessed the entire picture. 11 cents of every dollar actually goes towards your healthcare. The rest goes to administration fees. So don't blame the doctors. Even if doctors worked for free you'd still have the bulk left to pay.
      "The social deliberation from countless scholars"....lol that's really good. Maybe not in terms of robbing patients, but as a field, that phrase has waaay too much truth. There are quite a few physicians who would cross a room to shake your hand on that one.
      If you have any articles or things I would love to read them. To see where you are coming from.

      +Dark Matter I know a few doctors who are genuinely great people and try to help but the ones you mentioned also exist unfortunately. One I know is a radiologist because of the $300k+ salary they make, hes capable of doing anything but does that because he considers it the easiest for the least amount of work relative to other specialties.

    Why not train more doctors so people dont have to stay up 48 hours? Even 24 hours is already excessive. The numbers of doctors seems artificially low while training costs are kept high. Props to you for getting through it though.

    • @kickherb
      @kickherb 8 років тому +40

      +andun Yeah the government doesn't fun medical schools enough, its insane doctors are completely overworked and understaffed.

    • @Lucasroxx33
      @Lucasroxx33 8 років тому +40

      the reason is that the long an frequent shifts allow for advanced training and education for long periods on call. Also, it allows surgeon specifically to build up stamina to be able to perform surgeries that can go up to 20 plus hours. It helps them learn off of advanced cases and become groundbreakers in their chosen fields of study. regulating and the limiting of on call hours and shift hours is ultimately a detriment to all patients!

    • @MsJacquese99
      @MsJacquese99 8 років тому +12

      +Brad CT I'm not trying to say that med students don't go through hard times, but becoming a nurse is statistically harder. A lot of the stuff that docs learn (non speciality) are learned by nurses in half the time. Just saying to keep all the health care professionals relevant even though this is a med students page.

    • @anduin1
      @anduin1 8 років тому +13

      Luke Bota
      right but if there were more of them, then you wouldn't need to be trained to stay up for 48 hours. Theres no way theyre as effective that deep into it and I wouldn't want a doctor who hasn't slept in over 24 hours trying to work with me. Its just artificial limiting of doctors.

    • @MsJacquese99
      @MsJacquese99 8 років тому +5

      I understand, but docs are SUPER expansive....that's why hospitals want more nurses/nurse practitioners so they won't have to hire so many docs. (Unless they are surgeons or professions that you actually need like 20 yrs of training to do) I would (if hospital admin) hire about 2-3 nurse practitioners for every 1 doc. They get A LOT of training and can even write prescriptions. Not bashing docs, but nurses are taking over the health care industry. Hopefully that was articulated correctly.

    Boy that was an easy shift. Back in the mid-1990s when I was at her place in life, it was holy hell. Any not a good move to eat cold Chinese food (likely with MSG) when you have a headache. Only adding fuel to the fire of sleep deprivation and feeling yuck. Oh, recent research is putting Medical Resident burnout at about 50%. Cheers. Wish you all the best. If you have to go to the hospital pray the Doctor is on there first to tenth hour and not there forty to forty-eighth hour. Your life depends on it. You can only drive a truck for 10 hours a day but you can operate on people and make life making decisions after being a wake 40 hours. Yep. That makes sense.

    This is such an American thing. Why would you have one person being there for 48 hours? It's still a student! Why not have more doctors share those shifts and have a student come along? We've got a way better health system here in The Netherlands. I'm so glad I'll become a doctor in this country hahaha

    I want to do this career but I’m terrified of having to do an c- section! I wanted to go for midwifery so that way I can be on call and deliver but I don’t have to do any major surgeries.

      you can't say anything that could possibly identify them. that includes describing them in (even without saying their names) and sometimes it's also best to not specify where you work

    In my Obstetrics rotation, the patient load at the hospital was so large that I assisted in 12 Caesarean sections in a 24 hour shift 👀 this other guy in my group did 17 in 24 hours. Obstetrics is so hectic but really nice and often good outcomes! 👶🏾❤️

  • @Impedancenetwork
    @Impedancenetwork 7 років тому

    Are they paying you during this? If you are still considered "in school" then I guess this is just part of your classes, which means they aren't paying you. They don't pay me to take vector analysis so I guess I can understand why you wouldn't get paid.

    That's not right. You can't function mentally after so little sleep. I wouldn't want you as my doctor after the first 18 or so hours.
