He says something different in every interview. In one Star Wars is a Flash Gordon serial, and in another it's a "family soap opera". In one he had everything all planned out, and in another he made it all up as he went along. Biggest giveaway that he's a constant BSer is all this "Tragedy of Darth Vader" nonsense. In ANH it was obvious he was just a henchman. It was only during the later stages of ESB's development that he decided to make him Luke's father.
I always wondered why it was in the 1977 Star Wars film, that Darth Vader was taking orders from Grand Moff Tarkin? Especially since Vader seemed to think that he was above mortal human beings! Incidentally Peter Cushing and David Prowse also appeared together in Frankenstein And The Monster From Hell. Prowse played Frankenstein's Monster and was kind of Cushing's henchman in that film also.
Star Wars both came from a Flash Gordon serial and Is a family space opera though. I’m also pretty sure George Lucas was joking when he said that he made it ALL up.
@@skywalkerorder2170 He did make it all up as he went along. Most of the time they'd already started production and he hadn't even started on the script yet! It's mostly because he hates writing because he's not very good at it to the point of being barely literate. Kasdan commented once that when he received Lucas' "final" script that it was a rough first draught at best and was filled with lots of spelling and grammar errors.
@@white-dragon4424 I’ll admit that Lucas has told half-truths and lies on some things in Star Wars history before like Darth Vader being Anakin since the beginning, Greedo shooting first, and once on an interview said that he had fleshed out Prequel scripts during the 80’s when it was revealed in ‘Making of Empire’ that he had outlines of each Prequel at best regarding the films. He’s also straight up lied to the public claiming that when he talked about eventually making Episodes 7-9 he was just joking and the media reported it as fact. So no I don’t believe everything George Lucas says that has been debunked but I do believe what he says when it’s backed up by other people or reported on by historians. Do you have any sources regarding Kasdan’s statements? It’s basic knowledge to me that George Lucas doesn’t particularly like to write but I haven’t heard his actual writing being criticized by people who have worked with him before though. Also making spelling-errors doesn’t really mean that he’s straight up a bad writer. Lucas has been involved with the writing of Empire and Jedi, and since I believe Sith is actually a fairly good movie I believe that one was actually well written as well.
@@skywalkerorder2170 I'm pretty sure it's on the "Secret History of Star Wars" audio book that's on UA-cam. I've listened to the whole thing a number of times and it's quite an eyeopener. It's very, very long though, but if you want to get to the actual making of the movies you can skip a big chunk of the first part, like Lucas' early years when he's being bullied at school and having his little sister stick up for him...Excuse me bringing that up, but I can't get over the vision of a pathetic nerd having his LITTLE SISTER sticking up for him against bullies! 🤣
The cinematography and the angle shots in the Prequels were on par with Hollywood masters. What you're talking about is writing and storytelling. Those are two entire different things ;)
A lot of flat wide shots. A and B camera formation, static shots, CGI background plates that looked fake and dull even back then, retroactively inserted elements that don't blend well (especially with the actors) and reoccurring camera movements during exposition scenes. I don't hate the sequels by any means, but I think people are being way too generous to George Lucas.
NONE of those things you've parroted from Plinkett are in any way indicative of sub-par filmmaking. If he had 10 cameras and cuts every 0.5 seconds like Joss Whedon you'd shit on him too. And don't pretend the matte paintings in the OT looked real. They looked great- for paintings. They never looked real. As a small child, before I found out that people pretend that the PT is inferior to the OT, I preferred the PT (as they came out of course, i'm not THAT young), as they weren't taking me out of the movie every few minutes with obvious miniatures, jerky stop-motion, or flat looking matte paintings. The cult of lies and intentional misinformation around Lucas is the most pathetic- I mean that in the most honest way- the most TRULY pathetic thing I have ever seen from everyday (as opposed to public figures/noted criminals) people.
Thanks for your opinion. Have a look at interviews from Gary Kurtz, David Prowse, Ewan MacGregor, LucasArts staff members and so on regarding George Lucas. "Misinformation" that's just an excuse. You like the word "pretend" don't you? What makes you sure people are pretending? Is there like an Alcoholics Anonymous style group for people who pretend to not like the prequels for fear of cultural oppression? Look at public opinion generally and I'm pretty sure people aren't pretending not to like the PT. Just maybe people complain about it because Star Wars fans know what's what. I don't know of a fandom that's bigger. Matte paintings have nothing to do with the style change of direction. OT is 20 years older than PT and most people prefer the original.
1. Gary Kurtz was booted from Jedi for what he viewed as a "toyetic" approach (He and Kasdan wanted Han to die and Luke to walk away into the sunset like the Lone Ranger (not sure if it was The Lone Ranger or some other solo hero type like that but whatever) .) Gary Kurtz was obviously bitter about this and proceeded to talk trash about each prequel as it came out. 2. I don't know why you'd bring Prowse up, he's notoriously arrogant (has been periodically banned from conventions because he thinks that he is Darth Vader and that Lucas is evil for over-dubbing him with JEJ). Plus there's no evidence that he knows anything about filmmaking, other than what an actor has to know, which isn't much. 3. Same with Ewan. Not really sure why you're appealing to actors as an authority on quality. Interesting side note, Ewan was on Top Gear, and Clarkson asked him if he liked the PT. First Ewan said no, then he said he liked Revenge of the Sith, after Clarkson told him multiple times that he (Clarkson) liked all three. (Not that either one is an authority on film, but Clarkson's favorite Danny Boyle movie is Sunshine, so i'd trust his taste.) You're "pretending" because the PT is obviously and objectively made just as well(?) as THX 1138, American Graffiti, and Star Wars '77. They have flaws, but so does the original Star Wars. Remember that it was criticized in its day for skimping on character to deliver action. (My source is Skywalking: The Life and Films of George Lucas). I'd suggest you read this- www.newyorker.com/culture/cultural-comment/what-the-seven-star-wars-films-reveal-about-george-lucas And for those that aren't pretending, I think it's just an ignorance of the art of filmmaking. That's totally fine if you don't have an interest in filmmaking, but to then trash movies in your ignorance is pretty pathetic.
George Lucas isn’t a good film maker but he’s a genius level entrepreneur, philanthropist, and visionary. He changed the world, and mostly, I think for the better. But keep that dude away from the director’s chair!
@@creativecatproductions Exactly. I mean afterall he hired Irvin Kershner and Richard Marquand to direct Empire and Jedi respectively. He was just an overseer pulling the strings selling merchandise creating the "Empire", (no pun intended)
@@JoeyArmstrong2800 and Pixar, industrial light and magic, Lucas arts games, the Indians Jones trilogy, Willow, thx, skywalker ranch….it’s breathe taking!
@@JoeyArmstrong2800 I don’t think you know how involved George Lucas actually was with Empire Strikes Back. He was literally one of the main writers (gave away a credit to Brackett out of respect for her cancer) and came back to edit the film once the film’s financing was in trouble and there was too much exposition in the film. ‘The Making of Star Wars’ books, especially Empire show this.
I'm sorry but the collaborative effort on the behalf of many, many people, craftsman, set designers, film editors, puppeteers etc. Is what made the original trilogy what it was, not George Lucas.
Like all films? It's always a group effort but everything went through George's filter. Ask anyone on the making of the Original films and they'll tell you they're George's films, even the ones he didn't personally direct. Do check out Jonathan Rinzler's Making Of books.
I love George Lucas but the guy who wrote “I hate sand” and directed the phantom menace plainly doesn’t know a whole hell of a lot about either “tone” or “poetry”
George Lucas knows plenty about poetry though. Yes I do agree that by Lucas loving Jar Jar and having him have a great presence in the film that yes it clashed with the tone to an extent (which is a valid criticism in my opinion) but for me anyways Lucas’s tone was pretty consistent except for once or twice in AOTC though.

He never mentions the U.S. Constitution at all in any of these.
What does that have to do with anything?
@@skywalkerorder2170 Why you so horny to exclude it?
what's with the porno music?
George likes poon tang.
Ha
If he finds it so easy to make films, why does he have so few made? I think the star wars prequels contradict that statement
1. Gary Kurtz was booted from Jedi for what he viewed as a "toyetic" approach (He and Kasdan wanted Han to die and Luke to walk away into the sunset like the Lone Ranger (not sure if it was The Lone Ranger or some other solo hero type like that but whatever) .)
Gary Kurtz was obviously bitter about this and proceeded to talk trash about each prequel as it came out.
(Not that either one is an authority on film, but Clarkson's favorite Danny Boyle movie is Sunshine, so i'd trust his taste.)
You're "pretending" because the PT is obviously and objectively made just as well(?) as THX 1138, American Graffiti, and Star Wars '77.
They have flaws, but so does the original Star Wars. Remember that it was criticized in its day for skimping on character to deliver action. (My source is Skywalking: The Life and Films of George Lucas).
I'd suggest you read this- www.newyorker.com/culture/cultural-comment/what-the-seven-star-wars-films-reveal-about-george-lucas
And for those that aren't pretending, I think it's just an ignorance of the art of filmmaking. That's totally fine if you don't have an interest in filmmaking, but to then trash movies in your ignorance is pretty pathetic.
So he pretty much reimagined cinema with effects and thx sound. Then selflessly adopted and raised 3 kids. Can he stop! 😅 making everyone look bad.
I like George and his films, but I cringe when super rich people are full of themselves.
George Lucas isn’t a good film maker but he’s a genius level entrepreneur, philanthropist, and visionary. He changed the world, and mostly, I think for the better. But keep that dude away from the director’s chair!
Agreed. He's more of a producer or figure head not an actual director.
@@JoeyArmstrong2800 but my goodness, the man stood over a mountain of majesty and innovation as a producer. He was amazing in that role
At 2:21 he briefly turns into Donald Trump for a couple of seconds
He’s more of a tech entrepreneur than a director
I'm sorry but the collaborative effort on the behalf of many, many people, craftsman, set designers, film editors, puppeteers etc. Is what made the original trilogy what it was, not George Lucas.
Which still very much involved George Lucas btw. I recommend you actually do your research before making claims like this.
Like all films? It's always a group effort but everything went through George's filter. Ask anyone on the making of the Original films and they'll tell you they're George's films, even the ones he didn't personally direct. Do check out Jonathan Rinzler's Making Of books.
Star Wars started in '77 and ended in '83
That quote at the end is exactly why George shouldn't make movies anymore.
Because he cares more for film as the unique visual medium it is versus the recording medium it has become?
Tone poem blah blah
I love George Lucas but the guy who wrote “I hate sand” and directed the phantom menace plainly doesn’t know a whole hell of a lot about either “tone” or “poetry”
George Lucas knows plenty about poetry though. Yes I do agree that by Lucas loving Jar Jar and having him have a great presence in the film that yes it clashed with the tone to an extent (which is a valid criticism in my opinion) but for me anyways Lucas’s tone was pretty consistent except for once or twice in AOTC though.
Star Wars is literally the most poetic movie franchise ever. Are you just another dumb prequel hater?
You should watch Everytime Star Wars Quotes Star Wars on here if you believe that.
George is basically a hack who got very, very lucky!
lol, you're a fucking idiot. No hack does anything nearly as great as THX at the age of 26 and then goes on to create the greatest cinematic universe in history at just the age of 33... What the fuck have you done scrub? GTFO.
What does "hack" mean please?
