Wow, what a helpful video..... just doing the same job on my 2004 2500...... lots of detail in this video (and the control arm one) that prove helpful. Good humor too. Thank you for capturing this on film so capably. You should have more subscribers, in my opinion!
Thank You. P-Pump does a great job at getting the shots people need to see. Combining working on the truck and recording the work has turned out to be a lot of fun.
@@dustydiesel564XCELLENT VIDÉO ! But I have a question, I need to change my springs too, and I want to put more longer (2,5 " higher) can I use a spring compressor or do you think I can install them without compressor, just to put down the axle is enough to install them ? Thank you for your help
That bad stud ring looks like the Moog version. Mine were the same. I just tack welded them and learned a lesson. OEM’s the way to go with those. Your vid’s are great and I’m jealous of that big spread you have.
Have the same truck, and all same parts. Bout to do mine the same way. I hate workin under sketchy conditions so i appreciate the video and how to keep it as safe as possible. Starting on my thuren high clearance control arms right now ill update when i get through that. Thanks for the video
Good job on replacing the shocks and the springs I need to replace the shocks on my 1999 Dodge ram 2500 4x4 my truck is lifted I'm having trouble finding the right size of shocks I like your truck looks very nice is your truck lifted and how many inches looks like mine
Halfway thru I realized he was wearing the classic jay leno outfit..I’m hoping to do similar on my third gen.
Hello! Great video. Thanks for taking the time to make it in such detail.
I know you did the control arms first. Would these Thuren coils and shocks. Would this suspension upgrade be ok to do on the stock control arms?
Thanks
The general consensus is yes.
Depends on your tire size. Lifting the truck pulls the axle back in the wheel well opening, as well as sideways from the track bar. You will need an adjustable track bar, but can get away with stock control arms, I believe, don't quote me, up to 35 inch tires. They will almost rub the inner fender towards the cab.
Great video, how's the ride quality comparison to stock? Please get a wind sock for the mic lol
It rides much nicer than stock. I know the wind sucks!
Was it worth it? How much improvement ?
fixing to upgrade my '94 with lots of goodies as well ... mines from Cali tho ... zero rust lol
Actually i was just reading on CJC offroad's site that on 2nd gens the driver side droops more for whatever reason ... i was reading about the various Carli springs and all
Hi great video thanks.
Would you happen to have link or info 🤔 of those tow mirrors on your truck ?
Like your vlog, thanks for the play by play.
I have a 96 that I want to do the same as your doing.
Where did you get the T style steering conversion kit and the leveling kit from?
Thanks
Well this is got me curious to try this lol. Pick up the thuren soft ride shocks and need to put them on, so tired of the rough ride after owning the truck for a couple of years
I think ride is very subjective. The Thuren XS softride springs and Fox shocks have taken the harshness out of the ride but it is still a pickup truck. I have a brand new Jeep Wrangler and the truck rides much smoother but that probably is not a good comparison.
Hey, I love the truck and the video. This is awesome! What kind of hub caps are those and where did you get them?
Those were just Type 997 BlackRock wheels with their standard center caps
@@dustydiesel564 thanks!
Respect thanks for the vidéo great help !!
Glad it was helpful!
How has the ride improved? Is it smoother, softer.....?
The truck does not "bounce" down the road anymore and it soaks up the bumps better. A softer more controlled ride is how I would describe it
@@dustydiesel564 Thanks! I need to do something with mine. How does it handle any weight in the bed?
@@mikebates4815 It still has the stock leaf springs in the rear so the front rides great but the back is bumpy. The plan is to install a full Carli leaf spring replacement in the rear and use airbags when its loaded heavily...which is basically never anymore. Truck handles nicely, it rides better than most newer trucks I ride in.
It looks like I will go with the same Carli setup. Thank you.
@@dustydiesel564 so its worth it!? I have the same lift set up im about to throw in my truck! Just want any improvement from a 23 yr old stock suspension.. was also thinking about getting 33s on a stock 16” wheel did you like that setup or did the wheels look too small??
Nice video! Other than extended carli control arms, is that all i need to use 2.5 inch coils? Thanks
You will need longer shocks too and an adjustable track bar will get the axle centered back under the truck. People run just shocks and springs though.
@@dustydiesel564 thank you!🤙🏼
Shocks and coils were purchased here. www.thurenfabrication.com/
@@dustydiesel564 thank you good sir.
Good stuff...those jack stands get pretty sideways at 11:00-15...look out
Pushing the shock down and then moving it over is the best way to get the shock out. Otherwise an air hammer is needed to push it up.
Makes sense. Pushing them down would be a time saver. Appreciate the comment.
Nice ram
Only thing holdin me back from getting a full 3inch carli setup for my 12 valve is my wallet. And boy did they get more expensive since I’ve been waiting. Have recently started givin thought into maybe a thuren’s 6inch springs. I’m currently on a 4 inch lift with a set of 4 ranchos probably ten years old and a nearly 10 year old air bags in the back. I just threw on a set of brand new 35” BFGs on some new 17 inchers. A nice upgrade from the 31s that I had on. Already sick of em and should have just bought 37s of the bat. Now I’m worried I’m not gun think 37s are big enough. Who knows... just bought a new dash from LMC and dropped a pretty penny on a 99-02 sport bumper from ‘em too I’ll will trying to stick on a 97. Curious what your thoughts are on the 3inch carli or going big on a 6inch thuren coils and firguring out the rest, nice to see fathers workin w their sons. -Pete
I really like the Thuren srings and I hear the Carli springs are similar. I think I would want long arms if I went 6 inch lift. Don't forget a nice trackbar. The DT ProFab on my truck made a really big difference in how the truck drives. Funny you mentioned the 37's. We just put 37's on the truck and my son is editing the video now. He does all the work I just stand in front of the camera and talk trucks. He wanted to do the channel and it has been a great bonding experience. Appreciate your comments.
@@dustydiesel564 do you have a video of that tracbar? I’m really interested in one and how it adjusts etc
@@dustydiesel564 do you have a video of that tracbar? I’m really interested in one and how it adjusts etc
@@FURFEELINGS_3 The sway Bar flip video talks about adjusting it but I didn't really film it. Basically just loosen the jam nuts and spin the middle section to move the axle left or right. I did block the frame up to allow the axle to move freely.
What steering setup are u running? Don't really want to spend 1,000 on synergy setup
OEM from 99 HD. Bought all the parts on Rockauto for under $300.00
@@dustydiesel564 Thanks for the reply 👍
Do you have stock rear blocks under the leaf springs? If you do how tall are they ? Thank you
Stock rear blocks for now. My plan is to upgrade the rear with a full Carli replacement spring. It sits about 1/2" high in the front at the moment. I actually like that look but the rear springs are so stiff it is a shame to have such a nice riding front end with a overly stiff rear suspension.
Where did you get those mirrors?
I tried to install the springs last night using the exact same method you used, removed the sway bar and everything but the axle wouldn’t drop low enough to fit in the new carli leveling spring, I still need about 2 more inches of axle drop to make it fit.
I did however notice the stock upper control arm was maxed out and hitting the housing at full drop
Any help would be rad, I’ll be uploading the video on my channel soon!
I did the control arms first. Is the frame blocked up high enough off the ground to allow the axle to drop as far as it can. I had to bottom out my jack under the front axle. Honestly the whole thing is a bit sketchy unless the truck is blocked up really well.
@@dustydiesel564 yeah i currently working on it as we speak, there is still about 8” left after the axle is filled dropped but I noticed the upper control arm (stock) is maxed out, I just removed it to see if it will allow for more articulation. We will see in about 10 mins if this works.
Thanks for the reply!
@@payloadperformance9706 Hope it worked. I forgot to remove the brake line on the drivers side and that held the axle up!
@@dustydiesel564 yeah I did it, but I had to remove both upper and lower control arms, that’s was the limiting factor for mine. Since they aren’t long it didn’t allow the axle to drop enough to get the new spring in, tomorrow I’m doing the driver side which has a spring that’s about 1” bigger so we will see how that one goes.
Do you have the past numbers for the arms and springs handy? Also, you have the part numbers for your headlight housings? They look like they may work well? Thanks
How do those springs ride compared to stock?
The springs are much softer than stock. They soak up the bumps, the ride is much improved but the back is still very stiff. I am going to get softer springs out back and use airbags when loaded.
no tower spacer needed?
I did not use any spacer. I did replace the hard rubber vibration isolation piece that the spring seats into.
What control arms are those? What I miss here lolz
Carli Control Arms
Do your tires rub the Carli control arms??
Does it sit dead level now?
No, there is a tiny bit of squat.
I see you found the burr
Were did you. Hy the shocks from ?
CJC Offroad. They are Thuren tuned Fox shocks. CJC has always done a good job with parts for me
Should of bought a Milwaukee impact.
The wind made this u-tube lousy.
No one even wants my rust free 2nd gen. I have tried to sell it twice. 4x4 quad cab. I was asking 15 for it.
Banks won't finance vehicles that old and in 2023 almost nobody has that kind of cash on hand anymore.
