DISNEY SILVER AGE (1950-1967) - All 8 Movies Ranked Worst to Best

  • To celebrate the release of the MALEFICENT: MISTRESS OF EVIL and the era that inspired it, I present my ranking of the movies of Disney's Silver Age Era in order of my own personal preference from best to worst.
    The Disney Silver Age spans the entire breadth of creative output at Walt Disney Animation between 1950 to 1967 and saw a return to the classic fairy-tale and storybook storytelling of the early classics - delivering some of the Disney canon’s most magical, memorable and beloved stories and characters. However, it would also be hallmarked by two distinct kinds of films - epic, gorgeously exuberant and technologically innovative masterpieces, many with large budgets and poor commercial performance; and artistically unattractive cult classics - stemming from Walt’s lack of attention to detail (due to his distraction with Disneyland, television and live action features), and cost-cutting methods such as the introduction of the Xerox process.
    Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp, Sleeping Beauty, One Hundred and One (101) Dalmatians, The Sword in the Stone, The Jungle Book

    My only complaint about Cinderella is that much of the film focuses on the mice. Take their story out, and the film is half the length.

    • @TheReelRaymond
      @TheReelRaymond 4 роки тому +6

      I agree, but I'm going to be a bit harsher by saying that's not my only complaint. While the film is indeed mostly cat and mouse shenanigans, the fifteen or so minutes of actual story just isn't that compelling. I get that most Disney princesses are obnoxiously passive characters who just sit around and wait for life to happen to them, but sheesh does Cinderella take that to an extreme. And no, I'm not fun at parties, haha.

      The Reel Raymond I have always felt like that particular narrative with Cinderella has been unfair. What was a woman during that time. To do? Her stepmother had already squandered away all of the wealth by the time the movie starts and the house is described as decaying. What was a person in her situation supposed to do in that era of history that wouldn’t have involved Cinderella being incarcerated or institutionalized?

    • @disneyfan8178
      @disneyfan8178 4 роки тому +20

      @@TheReelRaymond I disagree. Cinderella is not as passive as Snow White or even Princess Aurora , not by a long shot! Her chastising Lucifer and her pointing out to the stepfamily shows she has some backbone. In fact, deep down IMHO, I get the impression that she really, really hates her lot in life. She is just smart to not let her real feelings to the surface, which would result in harsher treatment from the stepmother.

    • @user-gc9dk7cc1y
      @user-gc9dk7cc1y 3 роки тому +4

      @@TheReelRaymond I disagree as well. What is Cinderella supposed to do-talk smack back to her step-family and risk getting thrown out of her own house? She has a hidden strength in her perseverance as she waits for better days. I could understand if you said Snow White was passive or maybe even Aurora who barely has nineteen lines in her titular film but Cinderella was far from passive.

      I wasn't a big fan of Sleeping Beauty until I saw it on DVD. Some films work reasonably well when shown on VHS or 16mm with a 4:3 aspect ratio, but Sleeping Beauty isn't one of them.

    Sleeping beauty was the first Disney film shot in 70 mm film instead of the traditional 35mm film. He wanted to film to be a moving tapestry. That's why the animation is so detailed and textured and several animators had to start from scratch all over again because their original animation was not what Walt was looking for. The movie is gorgeous and is one of my favorites. There was a documentary at the end of my VHS copy of sleeping beauty as a kid that featured Walt talking about the film. I remember whistling when I heard him say " that is why it took us 6 years and 6 million dollars to make this film..." lol

    Sleeping Beauty is not only my favorite in this era, but my favorite Disney movie of all time. There are other Disney movies that I like just as much, but I put this one at the top because it's just gorgeous. The music is fantastic and it's style is just so different from the previous movies and the ones that came after. Aurora may only be in the movie for a short time, but Maleficent more than makes up for her. Also, not many people talk about Prince Phillip, but he's also one of my favorite Disney princes. He's the first Disney prince that we get to see his personality before he meets Aurora, and then they actually have a conversation. It's interesting, because besides Maleficent, he has the most screen time.

    The most difficult era to rank for me, I love all of these except for Lady an the tramp. I would watch movies from this and the golden era a lot more than any movie in the renaissance age. Peter Pan, Snow white, Cinderella, Sleeping beauty, The sword in the stone, 101 Dalmatians, Pinocchio, The jungle book, Alice in Wonderland, I would watch those all the time. Although I was born in '98, I enjoyed and still enjoy these old movies a lot more than any movie released after the 90's

    1. Alice in Wonderland (Very creative and poetic, the best for me
    )
    2. Sleeping Beauty (I like its atmosphere, its animation and its nasty
    )
    3. Cinderella (Good heroine, good bad, good moral)
    4. 101 Dalmatians (60s atmosphere very appreciable, nasty memorable
    )
    5. The Jungle Book (Memorable with great characters
    )
    6. Lady and the Tramp (Intense scenes at times
    )
    7. Peter Pan (Very good bad, very good end message, secondary characters, others less)
    8. Sword and the Stone (A minor Disney classic but with good and memorable eccentric characters)
    No movie of this period is bad!

    my thougths:
    The Sword In The Stone: it´s a shame so many pick on this one because it is really better then whats been said, the characters are much stronger then the preceding films and it has a great underdog theme like Cinderella, while the episodic structure is noticable, so are the great highlights such as the wizard duel ( Milt Kahl considered that to be one of his finest works in animation ) 8/10
    Lady and The Tramp: nothing to add, but i think it´s great. 8/10
    101 Dalmatians: haven´t seen it in a long time, agree that the art style isn´t very appealing ( atleast for those who preffer colorfull and lush backdrops ).
    Peter Pan: Tinker Bell is the best, altough the other characters ( besides Wendy, Hook and Smee ) are kinda bland and the animation ( as you mentioned ) isn´t as strong, the portrayl of native americans is also EXTREMLEY outdated,
    Alice In Wonderland: the first half is a bit slow and doesn´t have many highlights but once we arrive to the tea party, thats when the ride becomes madiliny great. 9/10
    Cinderella: im gonna rewatch it tommorow because i´ve rarley seen the original, i hold back my thoughts untill then.
    Sleeping Beauty: this is an odd one, features some of the most gorgueos animation Disney had done since Fantasia and has one of the most epic final battles in ALL of cinema ( this is tied with The Thief and The Cobbler for animation ), sadly coupled with the blandest, dullest and most underdeveloped protagonists ever, they also missed the potenial by not showing how Aurora grew up with the fairies ( instead jumping ahead in time, missing what could have been great character development and could have made the story much stronger ) 8/10
    The Jungle Book: same thoughts as you.

    Walt’s involvement with The Jungle Book is very noticeable compared to the film that preceded it and the films that came after. The strong story telling and shift between dramatic and upbeat moods echo Snow White. The features truly came full circle with this film, especially considering it was Walt’s last film he had significant involvement with. Truly the end of a great era.
    So many of my personal favorite Disney films are from this period (Dalmatians, Cinderella, The Jungle Book, Peter Pan, And Lady And The Tramp). While not having the visual lushness that the golden age features had, the silver age films have a light hearted feel (hardly any scary) that makes them appealing and charming in a way the golden age wasn’t.
    I often wonder what Peter Pan and Alice would have looked like had they been released in the early 40s, as originally planned.

    1. Cinderella- I loved this movie as a kid and I remembered having a lot of fond memories with it. Plus a costume my mom got me😍
    2. Peter pan- it was fun and I'd always wait near my window to see if Peter Pan could take me to Neverland until I'd fall asleep
    3. The Jungle book- I loved singing and dancing to Bear Necessities as a kid🤣
    4. Sleeping beauty- while I loved it for Once upon a dream and for Aurora's and Philip's romance that scene where Maleficent lures Aurora to the spinning wheel scared me as a child and still does to this day cuz of that haunting ominous score 😥
    5. Alice in Wonderland- I thought it was funny as a child but now as an adult I love the idea of Wonderland
    6. Lady and the Tramp- while I grew up with mostly cats as pets, I kinda wanted a dog like Lady but my parents often said no😔
    7. Sword in the stone- I still remember this movie even if it's kinda forgettable. Plus it introduced me to Arthur and his somewhat confusing yet interesting cannon 🤣
    8. 101 dalmatians- To be very honest I don't remember if I ever watched this movie as a kid, I mean the clips I've seen on UA-cam are familiar but I genuinely don't remember this movie all that much

    You know, the xerox technique wasn’t just seen a cost cutting method. At the time it was first implemented it was seen as an innovation in animation. A way for the artist’s actual line work to be preserved instead of being copied on to a cell by the ink and paint department.

    • @DaveLeeDownUnder
      @DaveLeeDownUnder  4 роки тому +1

      Yes, it was. But the only reason it was implemented in the first place was to save thousands of man hours (and thus $$$$) inking individual spots in 101 Dalmatians. That animators’ original linework was reserved was a bonus. Regardless, animators were never happy with the eventual look of the process - Floyd Norman would even refer to it as “grungy”.
      Overtime it was only ever implemented to keep costs down.

If you understand german, i recommend you check it out. if i had to describe the movies in 3 words, i'd say "charm and personality". it's a movie i watch when i'm really down or just feel like reliving a part of my childhood. i hate it though that they cropped it for the restored dvd and bluray editions.

    I've never been particularly keen on any film adaptation of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, even though I love the book. I don't dislike Disney's version - I love the Queen of Hearts and Cheshire Cat - but it has never been on of the film's I've held much affection for.

    6. Lady and the Tramp. This movie is very well crafted but not one I choose to put on all too often.
    5. Alice in Wonderland. Now these top 5 are so difficult to rank becaise they are all fantastic. But as for this movie I find it to be maybe too crazy for me at parts.
    4. The Sword in the Stone. This movie it one that I absolutely loved as a kid but one that has gotten a little forgotten over time.
    3. The Jungle Book. As Walt's last film I have watched this about 20 times already. But although it has no faults I just love the two above more.

    The Sword in the Stone for me wins hands down over all of those! Although the Jungle Book is a close second.
    Also, the Sword does appear at the very beginning.
    For me, George Bruns's score is what makes the movie. With the addition of the Sherman Brothers' lyrics, the soundtrack is extremely fun and memorable, too. I always put on "Higitus Figitus" whenever i have to pack for a long trip :)

    Cinderella is one of my favorites due to it I think being the first movie I had on DVD...Sleeping Beauty I still enjoy for the characters as the kings were really something and Flora, Fauna, and Merriwhether are a fun bunch and Maleficent is freaking awesome. Agree to disagree. I do like Prince Phillip, the fairies, Maleficent and King Hubert but disagree with you on King Stefan. He wasn’t that interesting and had an overprotective and mediocre voice done by Taylor Holmes, who replaced Hans Conried for no reason. I will say that even though, Hubert is not the main character and could have had auburn hair in the beginning, he is a comic relief after all, same with Phillip.

    1. Cinderella: This is THE princess movie for a reason. It has a really beautiful story with wonderful characters, a great score and iconic songs. Not to mention that the animation is just gorgeous.
    2. The Jungle Book: This Movie has some of the best Disney songs from all time. The story is quite good and the characters are all memorable.
    3. Sleeping Beauty: Perhaps one of the most beautiful animated movies ever made. The art style is absolutely gorgeous and Maleficent is just the most iconic Disney villainess ever.
    4. One Hundred and One Dalmatians: Cruella De Vil is just so iconic and fun to watch, sure the animation isn’t as good as other movies, it’s still nice to watch.
    5. Lady and The Tramp: Like you said, this movie probably features the most iconic Disney love story ever and that’s for a good reason. It’s just a story that one can’t help fall in love with.
    6. Alice in Wonderland: I really love this movie, but I personally prefer the other five. The story is really good and I love how it’s so similar to the Package Era movies in the way that it is just story after story rather than a normal narrative. The animation and songs are gorgeous too!
    7. Peter Pan: I didn’t grew up watching this movie, my parents never bought it for me... But that doesn’t change the fact that this movie is a CLASSIC. The songs are good, the animation is gorgeous and the characters are just so good and memorable! Captain Hook and Mr. Smee are SO good.
    8. The Sword in The Stone: Quite forgettable, in my opinion. It’s not a bad movie, but it’s not something. I’ve ever been a fan of.

    This era has some of my favorites and some of the most meh movies for me. Overall though, a truly fantastic Era with movies that I watched over and over, as much if not more than many of the Renaissance ones.
    1. Cinderella
    Easily a childhood favorite, though if I had to compare it today it would not be so high on the list. But God, I watched this movie so much. It was magical and beautiful. I had a birthday party themed about it. I watched it and sequel all the time. It has a charm and wonder that remind me of my childhood.
    2. Lady and the Tramp
    Any animal movie was a + in my book! Fantastic, charming and delightful, I absolutely loved this movie. I only had the sequel at home (since I grew up between the Renaissance and the Sequel era), so this was one of my most rented movies as a kid.
    3. Sleeping Beauty
    Another movie I watched a lot! The plot remains somewhat disjointed, but I absolutely loved the charming shenanigans this movie had going, and while I hate creepy looking movies this one and Maleficent drew me in (in a very villainous way, I still cant care for the reboot). I particularly loved the fairies making Aurora's dress, the Kings getting drunk, and Prince Phillip cutting through the thorns and fighting the dragon. The soundtrack for that last particular sentence still pops in my head despite all that time, something other classics like Snow and Cinderella didnt manage. I like to call the animation on this movie very "satisfying", it's just fun watching everything move. I suppose it's a precursor to my eventual love for the medium.
    4. Peter Pan
    A movie I remember enjoying a lot, definitely dated though. I always thought the beginning was really strong, and the ending, but the middle was very boring. It gets this high a spot for the absolutely delightful classic characters: Hook, Smee and Tinkerbell are absolute favorited, and Peter is so quirky. I love his fights with Hook. Ultimately though, I think I liked the sequel better than the original! I watched it more often for sure.
    5. 101 Dalmatians
    Another movie I didnt own, but enjoyed watching from time to time. I think I liked the Live Action one better lmao. Still! A very fun movie. I love Cruella and I loved watching the spotted doggos run around. It doesnt leave as big as an impression on me but as an adult I love the tight storyline with lots of heart in it, and Cruella is just so so fun to watch.
    6. Jungle Book
    I think this was a very 'meh' movie for me? I remember my dad recorded it from my babysitter's VHS for me, so normally I'd watch it inbetween several other movies. I love Bagheera and Bear Necessities stands as a favorite, but most of my contact with this movie was through trailers, which played before almost every original VHS I had. Bare Necessities is forever ingrained in my brain because of that lmao. A weird movie because animal movies stick to me and this one didnt for some reason. One of the few I genuinely liked the remake of.
    7. Alice in Wonderland
    Honestly, this movie scared the heck out of me when I was a kid. It was confusing, it was too bright, it felt like I was trapped in an ever-changing nightmare I couldnt get out of just like Alice at the end. I was terrified of this movie and some of that... i wouldnt call it trauma, but that distaste stuck with me. I cant hear the Cheshire Cat saying something confusing without bringing back that nightmare-y feeling back. It reminds me of loss of control and things spiraling away from me and idk. It doesnt get the lower spot because objectively I can appreciate the style and beauty of this movie but it also has an inherent wrongness of it from my experience with it.
    8. Sword in the Stone
    Somehow beats the trauma-inducing Alice in Wonderland for the bottom spot. That movie was just so incredibly BORING for me, I have no desire to ever watch if again. Nothing more, nothing less. It's probably one of my least favorites in the entire Disney canon because I'll even give the bad ones a chance, but for some reason this one... i cant. It just screams boredom for me.

    Dang. I love 101 Dalmatians. Maybe it’s an unpopular opinion, but it’s my favorite Disney Movie. It could be because I love dogs and consider Cruella Disney’s best Villain because she’s just a wicked Human; no magic, no demonic powers... just a lady that I want to meet but hate to love and love to hate at true same time. Also, The Barking Chain scene always resonated with me as a kid. I love that movie.

    The rest can be any order. I found 101 Dalmatians to be much more enjoyable. It might be the art style, it might be the lack of big musical numbers (which generally bore me), and it might be the characters who are more relatable. I understand the value of vibrant colours, but honestly, that only goes so far to impress me, while good story/characters leave a lifelong impression.

    Am I the only one who thinks Lady and the Tramp is one of the most underrated movies ever? I think the titular characters have some of the best romantic chemistry of any Disney couple, and that's a really special thing. Only Beauty and the Beast came close.
    I feel like Alice In Wonderland is the kind of movie that's allowed to meander because it's not meant to be structured. Lewis Carroll did not structure the books it was based on, so it wanders, but you allow it because what you're really seeing is a convoluted dream. The only problem is that the movie ends with Alice just begging her real self to wake up in terror, whereas in the book, once she knows she's dreaming, she's able to stand up to the dream and take control of her imagination.
