Why I Won't Introduce Solids Any Other Way | TOP 10 FIRST FOODS FOR BABY | Baby Led Weaning

- Curious about Baby Led Weaning? In this video, I’m sharing my experiences using BLW for introducing solids and why I never use puree baby food. I’m also sharing my favorite first foods for baby.
Foods before one are just for fun but it’s also the perfect time to prime baby’s palate. The first baby led weaning foods I love are full of nutrition that babies love!
Now, a big thing parents are concerned about when considering solid baby food over spoon feeding purees is baby choking. In this video we talk about gagging vs choking and how gagging is a very common and protective response when babies first start to eat.
Enjoy this video about baby led weaning benefits and how to do it with your little one!

Bridget, you’re the best, thank you for all your information and encouragement! Just had my baby in July, she’s now 2 months old. I followed you all throughout my pregnancy and will continue to get your advice as I navigate being a first time mom ♥️
Really enjoyed the info in the video. We started w/ a combo approach of purées and solid foods, but still in the BLW approach of having her explore and feed herself. It’s been really fun watching her growth in exploring and dexterity in not knowing what to do with the spoon to eagerly anticipating what’s coming
Just saying I’m a ftm and I watched you my whole pregnancy to help me get through and now my baby is almost 6 months and you’re helping me get through this new stage ♥️ thank you!
Amazing! You are so helpful Bridget! Thank you for this video. I've been following you since pregnancy but have had limited time to watch new videos since giving birth and oh how I've missed you! Thank you for being the little voice in the back of my mind during labor, breastfeeding, etc. My baby girl is now 6 months old and I knew right where to come for advice on this new feeding adventure. You always have such a wealth of information, great research and the best demeanor for delivering advice. I appreciate you and the time you take to help me and so many others. May God bless you for sharing your gifts! Many, many thanks Mama 😘
My friend at church was just telling me about this. Glad you made a video on it.
thank you Bridget. as a first time dad, your videos are very helpful. can't wait to stop buying too much formula!
Bridget thank you for this video. I find that my baby 8 months, but I realized that even at 6months he didn't like much of the puree foods, he wants to eat what we are having.
O my goodness I would LOVE more videos on this! Bridget you are amazing. I followed you all through pregnancy and your videos helped so much and I JUST started baby led weaning 2 weeks ago with my 6 month old but still feel unsure of what I’m doing lol. This helped so much!
I prefer myself a combo way of feeding. Doing occasional blw and spoon feed too.
That is what I was thinking of doing. My baby is 5 months old and I started to mix some oatmeal cereals mixed with my maternal milk once a day. Eventually I would like to mix milk with smooshed food for a meal, and do blw for the other. Always have milk as main source of nutrition.
Very interesting and some good information. My baby is only 2 months but I've already thought of how/when I can introduce solids. I will definitely research blw a bit more.
Very educational and helpful video. Thank You
Love this video!! Wish I started out with blw but was encouraged not to by our parents that are just not as informed. Toddler now struggles to eat on his own, but im working on it now 😃
This video was so helpful and reassuring. Thank you so much.
It's ALL about texture!! Worked amazing for my daughter who is now almost 8 and eats (and prefers) heathier things.
I LOVED doing baby led weaning with my baby. And remembering that food before 1 is just for fun helped me relax about my baby not actually eating anything I gave her until she almost a year old! She just played with the food, but never put it in her mouth.
Thank you for this! Excited to use this info
We need a part 2 👏🏼
Thank you for this video,
Great advice!
Thank you Bridget! I watched your videos throughout my whole pregnancy & now my baby girl is 9 months old. She’s tired of purées & I knew it was time to search your channel for tips & found this video! Thank you for your tips & info!
Thank you, also for the list! :)
Pumpkin should also be fine, right? When it's cooked it's soo nice and soft! 😊
Edit: Oh never mind! I found the list in the description. This is SO helpful. Thank you 😊😊😊
I started baby led weaning between 6-7 months and it was the best thing I did! My baby is now 16 months old and pretty much eats everything…. She loves all different meats and seafoods, Greek yogurt, and of course fruits. She just now started eating a little cheese again after refusing it for a few months, and she’s hesitant with the green veggies but last night she ate so much sliced green bell pepper and cucumber, It made me so happy. She only has 4 teeth but chews everything well and we’ve never had any near chocking experiences.
Can I ask, when did your baby get anything in their belly? I've started for 2 or 3 months but he doesn't get much.
@@bangaliwala She was around 9 months old when she really started eating a more substantial amount of food with baby led weaning, like enough to where I didn’t need to give her purées. (I supplemented with puréed if i felt like she needed more and was she breast fed at the same time). Before 9 months she was playing around with the food a lot, squishing it, feeling it, chewing and spitting it out, etc. Around 9 months something just clicked for her. I was following another baby on Instagram that was her age and eating A LOT more than her earlier on. So I also questioned why my baby wasn’t eating in the same way. But it just goes to show every baby is different and if you just keep consistent with something you should get the results you’re hoping for 😊
@@itsgeorgianot thank you so much! I also see babies eating so much on blw groups. My son is 8 months (7 mos adjusted) and isn't as good at eating. He's still learning to swallow but can take good bites. I'll have to keep trying!
My baby is 8 months! I'm so scared to start this due to choking but watching this video I've gotten the confidence to try. Plus my son is tried of puree food lol so time to move on. Thanks so much.
It’s been 1 year, so how is your baby doing BLW ? Is it better than spoon feeding method ?
Thanks 🙏🏾 very much for your videos, i learnt a lot and they helped me and I just gave birth two days ago
We started with purees just so we could introduce new things to him. He also takes the spoon and puts it in his mouth when trying the new foods. I can't wait to introduce more solid foods.
Wow. This is what we're going through. Thanks for the info.
This is a great video thank you!❤
Thank you, this is super helpful 😊
Thank you so much for this video!!!!!
Thank you for this, great timing 8 )
Holy cow I am so glad I watched you video.
Thank you so much for sharing that first solid website. It’s very organized and helpful for this process that I am doing although I have a five year old I feel like I don’t remember a thing with my five month old. Lol
I’m considering buying your Built to Birth program! I’m just wondering what the difference is between the courses and your UA-cam, since you post so much free content already!
Can you do a video about teething/drops/gels etc tips and tricks??
BLW is amazing. Start early and do it safely and it will change your life
Thanks for the information.
I wish can see hands-on baby eating, or at least food preparation
The solid starts app has videos of banana eating each food at different ages
I love BLW! My baby is 7 months old, and we’ve been feeding her solids for just over a month. I’ve made homemade chicken nuggets and pork nuggets for her with ground meat (I ground them with the food processor) and she loves them. It’s a great way for her to eat meats easily, and they’re tasty.
mind if I ask what your recipe is for those?! Struggling to help my 1 year old try meat!
thanks alot
This was “saved for later” since last year when I was pregnant, and now we’re here! I’m so nervous 😬
Thank you for this. I can’t find the link to your favorite bibs that you mentioned would be linked. Can you help?
Hello Bridget! Thank you for your videos it helped me when I gave birth to my daughter last June. 😍
I'm going to BLW my baby when she's ready maybe on her 6th month, how many times in a day will I feed her with the BLW technique? Thanks.
This was a super helpful video!! Thank you! I do have a question - how often do you recommend trying the foods with baby? Once a day or after each bottle?
Hi! I’m about to start, does the feeding schedule change? Wondering if my baby we’ll be eating every 3 hours still. Thanks!
Really enjoy watching babe feed self but can’t help feel wasteful when most food ends up on the floor. Any suggestions?
I have that necklace too!❤
Hi! Any recommendations for high chairs?
Patting baby on back when they are gagging or choking is not recommended as them coughing is clearing their airway but if you pat their back you may cause food to go deeper in airway and then choke.
If patting on the back isn’t recommended then what is??
@@FuriousEevee93rub their bcak
leadsafemama warns the sweet potatoes and other roots may be high in lead. Make sure sweet potato is in moderation.
Thanks for the video. Do you put cow milk into your child's oatmeal? Because i breastfeed my child, and it's kind of annoying to put my own milk to oatmeal.
enjoyed d video thx
Do you think it’s ok to start baby from 5 months?
I'm 8 weeks postpartum vaginal birth. could you please make a video about hypergranulation, there's not much out there even some drs don't know much about it
Thank you so much for this helpful information! Could you also give a list of foods to avoid before 1?
The solid starts app advises on when to introduce each food in the database. I always check a new food there before giving it to my babe.
@@QueerlyMama thank you!
No honey before 1
The bib you like isn’t linked.. would you mind posting that?
I eat a lot of lamb and beef. What is your opinion on allowing a baby to try these at 6 months?
I’ve been giving my little one soup lately but want to help her since it’s a little hard to eat by herself. Any tips on independent soup eating? 😊 Thank you Bridget! You’re amazing!
Soup is TOUGH! When my little was younger, I would give her a cracker or strips of toast to dip in the soup and also gave her a spoon to play with. She's just recently figured out how to eat with the spoon (at 20 months), but definitely still spills a ton! Thicker soups are easier, like creamy soups with chunks of potatoes or carrots that she can pick up with her hands if need be.
Hey, a friend of mine uses a straw cup for soup serving
Thank you so much for sharing this. My baby will be starting solids next month and I'm so nervous. How did you know your baby had intolerance to food while she was breastfeeding?
Look for green and frothy poos with lots of mucus/slime in them, excessive reflux or vomiting, any unusual rash on baby or them bring unsettled for no reason. Poos are the strongest sign. As far as I know the intolerances are to dairy or soy usually
@@lstefanova Thank you! MUCH appreciated!
Is dairy okay if it's baked into things? I've heard they can't have cow's milk during baby led weaning.
❤
Where was this when i was weaning my baby???? Damn.. i was not prepared to do this properly. Well hopefully its not too late!!
Our 2 year old still relies on us to feed her. How do we encourage her to feed herself? Is it too late to do baby led weaning?
I can’t tell you how many times I gagged on an ice cube during this pregnancy! I guess we never learn 😂
This video comes at exactly the right time. My baby loves Breze (we are from Germany =)) but I fear, it doesn't have any nutritional value... On the other hand, when I cook for my girl I feel like wasting a lot of energy and also food because she can't eat every thing etc. Can someone give me Tipps on how to store and reheat some of the foods Bridget is talking about? Can I just freeze them and thaw them next time we have salmon for example? Also is there really a significant difference between steaming and cooking broccoli for example? Thanks for the great video!
Thoughts on steak?
My daughter is eight months old and has had a lot of feeding issues due to some medical things. I am super nervous about introducing solids because she has really bad reflux and has had a hard time even tolerating 2 ounces of formula which is made to be easy to digest. because she has always had weight gain issues and feeding issues, she really can't afford to vomit if I introduce solids too quickly so I'm wondering if you have any tips for how to introduce them very very gently so that her sensitive stomach won't reject it?
My 6mo son hasn’t gotten his first teeth yet, (hopefully soon!) should I wait until he gets them?
As a late starter my son is 13 months … I spoon feed him in high chair so how do I start
My baby was born 4 lbs 2oz. Her pediatrician had her on formula, purées and oatmeal until her first birthday. I didn’t have any idea I would be so scared about choking. Enough to where I lose sleep and tear up thinking about giving her something she can choke on. She is eating the puffs that dissolve, mashed up bananas, anvocados and today I gave her cheerios. I’ve watched multiple videos of moms feeling different sized foods. I’m confused if I cut things up small, or bigger so she can takes bites. I’ve seen both. Giving her chicken freaks me out for choking!!!
Hey , i love this comment. My baby boy is 9 months old and has simply been on just purée foods, the baby foods like beech nut etc.. i try to feed him mashed up things if i’m eating like mashed french fries(soft & cut lol) or just finger foods i’m eating but he won’t take any but the purées baby food pouches.. You said your pediatrician let yo give her purées till a year but my pediatrician told me start him on solids but i’m also super scared of choking & everyone around me is so judgemental that he’s still on purées. Any advice? Should i keep him on purées till a year as well he also has no teeth & wont take solids yet, it’s super stressful… any advice helps lol
Any tips or advice 15 moths old who likes to feed herself but majority of the time she’ll throw the food everywhere and she really won’t eat enough.
Any advice or help would very much be appreciated:)
My pediatrician recommended oatmeal cereal at 5 months for iron
Thank you for this video! Didn’t know how we’d go about introducing food but now we have a plan! This sounds great.
2 questions though:
Our baby just turned 6 months and is ebf, nurses 4 times a day. So should we start introducing food each time after she nurses or just start off once or twice?
Also, what is your advice about water? I’ve heard horror stories about introducing water too soon and it destroying their digestive system for life. So should it be like 2oz a day or more?
Thanks for your help!
Hi there! Mama to seven here, I don't usually give my breast feed babies water until they are at the point where they only nurse at night. (About 1 year) if they are nursing through out the day, they are getting all the water they need :) baby led weaning should be easy and not inconvenient, baby is fine just starting with once a day trying simple foods, it's good to go slowly, hope this helps
@@BigSmashKing Yes thank you so much!
I’m so scared of choking which is the only reason I don’t want to do baby led weaning, but my baby absolutely refuses purées and only like mashed foods a little bit. He wants us to just hand him over food to feed himself 😅
What about if the baby is almost 9 months old but doesn’t have any teeth?
We're doing BLW, but now my kiddo only eats strawberries and broccoli - with 5 teeth at 8 months, he wants to bite EVERYTHING. How do I get him to not turn up his nose at everything else?
I love salmon but you got to meticulously check for bones, they don't always get them all out in processing.
I just want to add that if your baby is not gaining appropriate weight by 5 months. They will tell you to give them either the whole grain cereal or the rice cereal . That's what I had to do with my daughter because she was still eating every 2 hours at 5 months and wasn't gaining enough wait.
Do you advise waiting 6-7 months to do baby led weaning if your baby is showing signs of interest in foods at 4 months?
WHO now advises to wait until 6 months. There were links found to obesity and other health issues later in life if babies start on solids too soon. But as with everything else, do what you think is right for your child
No with 4 months the digestive system is not quite there yet. 180 days after estimated birthdate is what I been told. That would be 6 months if baby was not born earlier before due date.
But your comment is 4 months ago so I assume you have started by now. My daughter is 9 months now, hope you and family are doing well!
I'm a bit confused, I was told by my pediatrician that eggs should be introduced slowly because they are hard to digest + I was told that babies shouldn't eat egg white before turning 1.
Then it’s probably best to listen to your doctor. They are a highly qualified medical specialist who’s given you a proper individual consultation.
That’s what I heard too. All the information is so confusing. 😅
I have two big kids and have never heard this. I live in Italy and know that also in the Nordic countries you can give babies anything from 6 months up (just no honey, salt and sugar!). Sure eggs are not that healthy... 🙊
As long as the yolk is uncooked and no egg whites.
This is exactly what all Asians give to their babies + rice of course
The reason I wouldn't feed the foods we have for dinner to my baby or toddler is because my husband and I both are into spicy. I put red pepper flakes into everything. Every stew, every casserole, every pasta sauce.
My baby goes crazy for blueberries too lol
I agree with everything you've said except the boiled chicken- reasoning is, that boiling removes the most nutrients from food of all cooking methods.
Think about boiling veg for instance- all that green tinted water left behind is FULL of nutrients youve missed out on, at that point you may as well drink the water too. Same goes for chicken, all that protein and all those minerals are left in the water, may as well make a soup from it. For baby, instead try a roast chook or a charcoal chook- still soft and malleable, but it's kept all it's nutrients whilst cooking!
Theres plenty of research papers on this topic if you have a google!! 👍🏻
Sure roasting works too but babies at this age aren’t eating for nutrition anyways so boiled is fine.
I usually do baby led weaning but with my third I just tried to do baby food from a jar. Eventually my baby had something he really didn’t like and now at 2yo he still won’t eat solids. I have so many appt coming up for my little guy.
How is he doing?
My son wasn’t picky from 6 months-10 months and then he suddenly became super picky, he’s 13 months now and I’m struggling so much to get him to eat veggies and meats. I don’t want to just give him something else that he will eat but he won’t eat what I’m putting on his plate.
This mama is in need of advice!! I had been feeding my little one tiny pieces of food but when I try "sticks" of food for him to chew pieces off of, he simply tries to shove the whole stick in his mouth. Just I just keep doing small pieces and gradually make them bigger over time?
@bridget, is it true that breast milk doesn't have enough vit d3 in it and you have to give them liquid supplement even if I get enough?
This is true per my pediatrician. My 7 month old has been on vitamin d drops since about 4 months. He is breastfed but gets one expressed bottle a day and I put the drop in that (along with his probiotic). Just be sure to get the drops formulated for baby.
Yeah when God made babies he forgot the vitK and vitD. He just wanted them to die. Lolcatz people are so gullable and will buy whatever the pediatricians are selling.
@@jenc5492 my son is 14 mo's now and I didn't know this until like a mo ago. My Ped Dr never told me and none of the nurses at the hospital did either 😔...or they did and there was just so much going on. Anyway, how do you get it formulated to your baby?
@@amandakochel9890 Hi! I just purchased a baby brand. I use Mommy’s Bliss. He gets just one drop which is 400 IU.
I think I read about vitamin D in the What to Expect book when I was studying up on how to have a baby. I brought it up to the pediatrician. I’m not sure if she would have mentioned it otherwise!
@@jenc5492 I do like Mommy Bliss brand. Thanks!
Where are the baby bibs you like?
Very interested in this topic, and your video came out at just the right time! My baby is 4 months old and I’ve been doing a bit of research on starting solids. One question about allergens: my son hasn’t shown any signs of having allergies from breastfeeding, but my husband has some nut allergies and had other allergies as a kid. Is that a reason to be cautious of those foods with my son, or do allergies not tend to be passed down that way? Thanks!
It could be hereditary and could be not. Allergies change every 7 years so something you might’ve not been allergic to 7 years ago, could be allergic to it now. That’s why I don’t think it’s hereditary.
Also I heard from my sister and read online that it’s a good idea to go slow with introducing foods to your baby, that way if they have an allergic reaction, you’d be able to pinpoint what it’s most likely from, instead of if you’d give different foods too quickly, you’ll have a hard time figuring out what food the allergic reaction originated from 🤍
We eat spicy food. Do babies have to be given non spicy food always ?
Is BLW appropriate if my baby does not like to drink her milk and is never hungry? She can spend four or five hours without eating and she is happy. And if she eats, she only takes two ounces. She is five months and two weeks old. I am desperate because she barely drinks her bottle.
I have tried to do blw with my son but he just doesn’t want to pick it up and cries until I feed him … I do both BLW and puree but honestly he ends up eating only puree … help?
I’m so late, my baby will be 10 months. EBF… he tries at times but the gag scares me so much.
Read about gagging vs choking and do a infant first aid course! Good luck :)
We've recently launched a book business called Personalised Children's Books, they are personalised learning books and we have FREE downloadable materials for your kids!
I'll be happy to send it xx
Please beware, Bridget. Around 7:10, when you explain the coughing and say to encourage, the tap in the back is a bit misleading.
When baby (or anyone!) is trying to caughing to get food out, DO NOT TAP in the back. In CPR courses, it's the first thing we learn.
Cool videos, thanks!
I'm assuming that's not what you meant
So what should you do?
Hard boiled eggs- quarters
Avocados
Mango
Boiled chicken or chicken on the bone
Oatmeal -
Broccoli- prefer frozen broccoli as it soft
Zucchini
Salmon
Sweet potatoes -,cut them like fries
Blueberry-easily mushed or cut in half
Avoid sugar or minimal salts
Baby led weaning for our family came naturally and our baby is far more advanced than all the other babies that were born around the same time as her even though she was the youngest. It is noticable at a distance how much aware and in control of her environment she is.
Of course every parent does things differently but for us it has worked wonders and we are so proud of our little munchkin.
Can you mix rice cereal with breast milk?
Great video, but teeth have nothing to do with it. My first didn’t get her first tooth till 13months and it didn’t stop her demolishing any food put in front of her…. Gums are strong!
So you’re saying that oatmeal, rice is bad for babies and so is puréed food?
#Bridget Teyler
I have conceived through IVF and in 33rd week. I always wished for vaginal birth that’s when I found your channel.
During my last hospital visit, doctor advised for elective c sec just to ensure there are no miss happens. Although he had left option for us but things like what if baby eats meconium or umbilical cord circling neck , scares me.
Im totally confused whether to directly go for elective c sec thinking baby’s safety with less risk or try vaginal
Can you please please let me know your views
Hey, with my first baby I wanted natural birth but ended up having an emergency c-section because of the exact reasons. I think you still have time for natural so see how it goes. Don't stress either way we want a healthy baba. All the best momma❤
@@kiezzyskeef2264 Thanks for your reply. I opted for elective c sec . Blessed with girl baby who is 6 months old
I’m so confused by Baby-Led weaning, wont they choke on their food? How can they chew food with no teeth? 🤔
If you think about it they get there front teeth first and don’t get there back teeth until they are around 2! so they are just using there gums to mush there food, the food is soft enough to be mushed with there gums until it turns into a “purée” type texture in there mouth! that way they won’t choke!
Don’t use hard foods such as carrots or apples use the food that she mentioned and your baby should be fine :)
the pancreas is not developed enough to have big chunks of food. The food should be puréed so it’s less hard on their undeveloped digestive system. So I think puréed food is healthier and less risky
