For major productions that have dedicated teams to handle different aspects of the project (color/audio/effects), the editor sends elements of the project to be worked on, then sent back to Avid for final output. It's where your project lives. Other NLE's are mostly used for smaller projects, such as youtube videos, and having assets is crucial for fast turnarounds. In Avid, it's possible to make your own assets and store them in bins that can be opened in multiple projects. I do wish there were a market for pre-made assets for Avid.

Wrong! The Avid/1 Media Composer was introduced at NAB 1989. Not in 1996 as you state in this video.
