Airwolf at Jetcopters, Van Nuys Airport

  • I think I took these pictures in 1984 but for sure no later than 1986. The first picture is looking across the main runway when I was searching for Jetcopters hoping to see Airwolf. Then I had to make my way around the airport to find Waterman Drive. The next picture is the rear of that same building. Though I don't think it's visible in the photo, I could see Airwolf inside that hangar. I parked and went in through a glass door into the lobby and asked a lady at the desk if there was any way I could take some pictures of Airwolf. She said I could and led my wife and me to a door into the hangar. To my amazement, she turned around and went back into the office.
I would have guessed from the tv show that Airwolf was black and white. I was really surprised to see that it was a dark metallic gray on top with very light gray bottom. The interior was pure utility helicopter... no fancy Airwolf stuff.
Next is the Sikorsky S76 that was used as HX1 in an episode. A beautiful machine that was much bigger than the Bell 222 Airwolf. It looked like an executive transport inside with red velvet looking captions chairs and a round table in the passenger area.
And of course the Santini Air. Nothing special about it. The blue paint almost looked like it was sprayed on with an aerosol can.
The last picture was the next building and almost looked like a bunch of spare parts.

In 1986 my Late Dad and I were working in Long Beach, CA. They filmed an episode of Air Wolf next door to where we where working. I got to see the Santini Air and The Lady both fly in. Sadly The Lady did not scream when she came in like she did on the show but in my head that's the sound that I heard. And it was not the episode they filmed at the Queen Mary. The address for where it was is 1925 Pier D street. But when we worked there the address was 1925 Water street they changed the name of the street sometime in the 90's.

I went to Monroe high school in the '80's. I remember many afternoons being out on the football field & seeing the lady & Santini air flying by. They followed the 405 up to Valencia (I believe) for filming.
Thanks for posting: thanks for bringing back memories.

I drove a truck delivering pianos from North Carolina in the 80s. There was a California 6 motel not very far from the Van Nuys airport where I would occasionally stay. That was when I decided to see if I could spot Airwolf.

Motel 6 Sepulveda now. Just looked at it on google maps street view. Same motel building I stayed at. I thought it was California 6 though but maybe always Motel 6. You can also look up Helinet, Waterman Drive, Van Nuys Airport and use street view to see the same hangar where Airwolf was kept.

Would have been very cool to see the LADY in person, it's sad that the helicopter wasn't kept in it's original form for fans to enjoy. Also, the sad ending to the airframe when she crashed.

I wish they would have preserved her for all us fans to enjoy. Well.. The Lady will always remain in our hearts and memories for as long as we all live, that's for sure! Airwolf will always be remembered.

It was exciting to find it and get to walk around it. One of the reasons I took pictures was to show a friend the color scheme for his radio control model Airwolf. I thought it was black and white. Some thought it was a dark Army green and white. I was surprised to see that it was metallic dark gray and light gray. In some of my photos, it looks black and white depending on the lighting angle. Now, I wish I had taken many more photos showing more details and the interior.
