I think Kino was being a hard-ass not just to ensure his own freedom, but everybody else's as well.

The funny thing is, the empire looking for Cassian without knowning that they already have him in prison, even when they decide to be competent they somehow make themselves look bad
I think they just doesn't have any reason to think that Cassian, after very carefully hidden his tracks from a double murder, managed to be apart of the biggest rebel attack in recent history, wouldn't just find himself in jail. Or else they would've checked prison records everywhere.
Their competent ones are outnumbered by the incompetent ones.
@@MM-vs2et Who also managed to get his hands on highly secure shit that nobody should have been able to steal (on paper, anyway), from deep inside a military facility. And managed to sneak back into Ferrix--which was under Imperial occupation--and then sneak back out unnoticed.
They absolutely would have never thought to check the prison records thinking he got pinched like right after the heist.
I mean all the prisoners are disposable,why would they care? just names on a ledger.
Ulaf's death seems to hit harder because it feels more...real then a lot of the deaths in star wars and it made me wanna cry
The whole show feels more real than any other Star Wars.
Yeah seeing people die from real life medical issues rather than lasers or explosions is something I never realized Star Wars was missing. Feels so much more real to see a character stroke out and bring you in more

This was such a chilling episode. Everything from Bix's emotional torture to the closed system of the prison to the fact that even as a fascist leader and killer Dedra can't escape being the target of creepy men. SO much incredible commentary in this show. Utterly stunned by it every week. I can't believe it's a Star Wars show.
I love how the Karn/Daedra scene reminds me of Anakin's advances on Padme in Attack of The Clones except now we're dealing with a character that isn't special saying the same skin crawling stuff to someone who absolutely won't have it.
It’s pretty different, I don’t think the dialog sounds that similar and the tone of its delivery is definitely different.

Love that Marketa instantly gets the vibe the shows is going for but Micky is like "She likes him back" and shes so shocked. Cyril at first felt like he might be a Tarkin type, now I'm convinced hes gonna get shot and achive nothing.
The sheer difference in response from male and female reactors to that scene across multiple channels is mind blowing. Why do I think Micky the type who in real life think the girl isn't ghosting him, she's being coy and playing hard to get.

Idk, I think she is a very broken character that could find this unacceptable behaviour attractive. If they go that route it would make sense to me, I think you can justify it because of the psychological profile of the characters... I can also imagine them not going that way.

I think Cassian's prison is the first stop of a prison chain. It takes brand new prisoners to do "cleaner" job that need more finesse. The clean environment and false hope of being released keeps them obedient and efficient slave workers. After serving the sentence, they'll be transferred to worse prisons, probably some hazardous labor camps with high death rate. People there know they'll never get released but at that point they don't have any energy nor hope left to do anything. It's basically a recycling system where the materials get weaker with each cycle until they break down and have to be put into the dumpster.
Also its a mirror of the greater conflict between the Empire and the Rebellion. As Luthen said the empire has been choking the galaxy so slowly theyre beginning to not notice, just like how if you just keep your head down "Work will set you free" in that prison. But with the crackdown on "Anti-imperialistic activities" people are feeling those chains and its about to explode. Just like Luthen wants with the Aldhani heist. The Empire starts rushing and showing its true colors. Suddenly Normal people like Andy Serkis' character know theyre fucked no matter what and get ready.
It was the sounds of listening to one's child plead for help while being murdered that led to the Emperor being Yeetus Shivus'd down the shaft in Return of the Jedi.
The Empire's done really horrible, genocidal things but making prisoners hear children being murdered as a form of torture is one of the most sadistic things shown in the Star Wars universe.
Leia got it easy with the interrogation droid, though did have Darth Vader standing over her.
Do we know if it's a sentient race or animals? We can kind of assume either way
Best writing in all live-action Star Wars for me; The Gilroy Brothers (Bourne, Michael Clayton, Nightcrawler), Beau Willimon (House of Cards, Ides of March) & Stephen Schiff (The Americans) is one hell of a writers' room! Shame there's ppl out there who can't engage with it 'cos there're no Lightsabers, Skywalkers, Jedi etc.

I don’t think it’s just a simple audio recording. I think the species that was genocided has some sort of special ability, IE their wails have some sort of psychic/psionic type ability to cause severe mental trauma

I couldn't shake the feeling that I'd seen Ulaf before. Come to find out he's the merchant with the eye brows on the first guardians of the galaxy.
The doctor who examines and kills Ulaf is also familiar if you've seen the Harry Potter films. He played James Potter.
He's done loads of stuff over the years. He was in the Fifth Element back in the 90's too, and for me he was best known for a show in the 80's called Auf Wiedersehn, Pet. Speaking of Harry Potter, one of his co-stars in that, was Timothy Spall, who plays Peter Pettigrew in HP as well.
Sticking with the Harry Potter theme, Maarva was Aunt Petunia and Syril's mother played Mrs. Figg.
One thing the slower pace of this show does is build tension, suspense and emotion towards what you know is coming. In episodes 4-6 it was the heist, in episodes 7-9 it's the prison break. When this prison break does finally happen I am SO ready to see every single one of these guards get their just desserts for the misery they've been inflicting with such callous disregard.
Also the arc that Mon Mothma is on is the one that we've seen subtle background references to in previous Star Wars stuff, but it's so cool to see played out in full. She's slowly but surely getting her pristinely clean hands dirty in order to carry out the grand ideals she has. It's a grim reminder. War is dirty. Even the best intended people are not innocent when blood is shed. Mon Mothma holds on to the bitter end hoping for a diplomatic peaceful solution to the conflict, knowing that war is inevitable deep down inside.
Your discussion of the audio torture reminded me of an old Monty Python skit where some crazy dude had created a new musical instrument that is "played" by hitting with a mallet mice in separate spots on the instrument arranged in a specific manner where the resulting squeals are in order of pitch.
One thing a lot of people may of missed, they potentially killed 700 people, instead of the assumed 100. When they say "two got fried," if they mean the whole floor, thats 7 rooms for 2 50 man shifts.

Because Dedra is the person Syril wants to be, a person of authority with the tools to fight for justice. It’s not about romance.
Syril is in infantized by his mother. She controls everything he is and does. Him still eating cereal why still living with mom is apt, like a srial kllr type.
I like how the Syril / Dedra scene has thrown pretty much every reaction channel's expectations off that I've seen so far. They all (myself included) seemed to have thought he was destined for greatness either in the ISB or in the Imperial Navy in some capacity. However once that particular scene happens most people write him off as a creep / potential serial killer. This show really does a great job of subverting the audience's expectations given what we've seen in previous Star Wars movies and shows so far.
29:43 The Christmas special is nuts. It starts off with a family of Wookies, talking wookie talk for about 15 minutes, with no subtitles. Then the grandpa watches space porn. I think you can find it on youtube. It's Alejandro Jodorowsky weird.

Dedra really is the perfect antagonist for this show. She's the only member of the empire that defies the whole "Nobody's Listening." Idea. She investigates with the "Little People" and doesn't underestimate the rebels.

Just give it time...word of mouth will be powerful considering it's a SW show that doesn't rely on fanservice and corny jokes
They did have firearms in the prison. When Andor arrived on his first day, two of the guards had blasters in the scene where they were bringing him into the room. The prison warden was bragging about how they're comfortable being lightly armed around the prisoners , but that doesn't mean they don't have an armoury around the corner when shit goes down. The Empire has failsafes for their failsafes.
I haven't laughed out loud for anything in months as much as I did during that scene with Cyril and Dedra, for how batshit crazy it is that Cyril is literally stalking a fascist commander.
Also the Empire is very human supremacist, and even the Republic was to an extent. If I remember my lore correctly, one of the reasons Darth Plagueis selects Palpatine is because the Sith need a human to reach the highest levels of power in the Republic, something Plagueis can't do himself as an alien species.
I started to look up "never more th" and the search bar autofilled "never more than 12 star wars." So glad others respond to that line because I leapt up from my couch. So disappointed the narrative online is apparently that Andor is "boring." Maybe I'm gonna sound like a tool but I sometimes despair for modern general audiences.
"Boring" is not valid criticism. It is purely a personal subjective experience. They just don't have attention spans
Some things drag on too long, but it's still the most exciting, realistic, and humanist story they've ever told, in live action. So many more pros than cons, I can't say the same for the rest of the films/shows.

This series is sooo underrated. I don't think there's enough eyes on it.

I love it. The story, the acting, and the plot it just feel good. Not too drag on like other's tv shows, but not to short so the details could be decent enough for us to grab more details of SW world

The people who don't like it are the type who would call Apocalypse Now booooring because too much talkin' and not enough shootin'!😛
The mistake was putting the prisoner on a floor with other people who knew him. Probably an inmate from his previous floor. When they both confirm it to the rest. All hell broke out. And the guards killed everyone. The accounting error, is sending people from the same level to the same different level. No one is getting out. That's why Andy finally tells Andor how many guards to they have. Andy was counting down the days to freedom. So he's like either I'm going to die in here. Or die trying to get out.
This show has a great way of displaying how horrific the empire and their tactics are.
Of course Syril is awkward. He's an adult who lives with his mom and still eats cereal.
Norman Bates type of shit. I don’t think things gonna end up well for his character.
Kyle Soller explained in an interview that he and Kathryn Hunter came up with a backstory for their characters since the scripts left things vague. Their idea is that Syril's dad walked out on them when Syril was young so Eedy decided to focus on controlling her son's life to make up for that absence.

I still wonder - if they just send them to a different facility - word still gets around. At least in these new facilities. Doesn't make sense. I think they just kill them after release. And failed to do it here and instead put him back in.
There are seven 'buildings'. Seven floors. Dude got sent to the same building. That or Aldhani got them shuffling instead of releasing.
Andy Serkis is a generational actor
You guys hilariously don't pay attention to the dialogue at the END OF THE EPISODE. Ulaf wouldn't have gotten out to touch sand or look at the sky. He would have just been shuffled to the 4th or 3rd or any of the other floors.
Kino had given up on the idea 💡 of escaping their imprisonment on Narkina 5, but, hearing that everyone on level 2 was basically executed, and the medical officer confirming it, along with blatant disregard for Ulaf's life, even if it _was_ a mercy kill, 🥺, was the _final,_ the *very,* *_very last straw!_* 😠😡
So here’s a theory of mine:
(1) The series is about the birth of rebellion & how its pieces come together.
(2) We see where the funding originated from during the imperial payroll heist.
(3) I think we are going to see how the rebel alliance gets their army with the massive prison break.
(4) I believe many grateful prisoners will join the rebel alliance when Luthen Rael launches a massive rescue effort with the reluctant help of Saw Gerrera.
Just a theory but I would love if it becomes true. Not sure if it sounds plausible but that would be a great tie-together for the conclusion.
Andy Serkis is not leaving this prison alive.

There are other prison towers to send people to. They probably tell them that a mistake was made in releasing them and then add more time to their sentences. That's prob why some of the newbies to a floor kill themselves...
I hear Ulaf actually had the death sentence on twelve systems.
Keno's character is a great representation of people who 'play by the rules' under an oppressive government because they think that they personally will be OK. Much like people who say that if you 'did nothing wrong' with the cops then you have 'nothing to fear'. The 'Never more than 12' line shows the clarity that comes with knowing that you can do everything 'right' and never be free under an oppressive system. The only freedom is breaking the system. ✊
Deadra says they have eyes on the mother full time. Good thing Cinta has her eyes on her too. But I assume Bix and Maarva will die - could be the final reason Andor joins the rebellion. Maarva will do something about Paak's hanging because that reminds her too much about her husband. Also, I thought about Cassian's beginnings versus Jyn Erso's. She also chose to not look up and just live a criminal life before finding cause to rebel. They are not that different.
Yes, the Empire is very xenophobic, but when Andor got his 6 year sentence there was actually an imperial alien guard in the court room behind him, so they do exist. But i dont think there are any alien stormtroopers and certainly no officers (with very few exeptions like Thrawn). Standardizing uniforms, rations, ... doesnt work so well with different alien species and the Empire really likes uniformity (Syril works at the actual bureau of standards).
Also that xenophobia didnt start with the empire. Thats one of the reasons why so many alien planets wanted to leave the republic and formed the seperatists. In return a lot of the humans then see aliens as seperatists which boosts the xenophobia. I dont think we have seen any alien republic officers in the clone wars and its no accident that the clones are humans.
In general i'm surprised by how few people seem to understand this.If you ask a casual star wars enjoyer about the themes of star wars, not a lot of them will mention these things

So saw was smart not to collab with Kreegyr's rebel cell and proceed with the assault on Spellhaus, because the latter's cell is about to be smashed and Saw's crew would've gone down with them. In the real world this is why rebel factions (or terror groups, depending on one's pov) are so decentralized, to prevent the capture of one cell to lead to the head of the snake. I wonder if individual cell members carry anything like cyanide so when cornered, they can take themselves out without throwing their comrades under the bus via torture confession.

One question if the sound of those aliens causes people to freak out. How did they modify or use it if they can't listen to it? Maybe they used sociopaths and psychopaths who can't be emotionally affected by it?

Humans share the same anatomy, needs, breath the same air, eat the same food, drink the water, the see the same, hear the same, can understand and work the same, work the best in the same gravity, temperature and air pressure, have roughly the same principles, and fears, efficiency curve,..
By keeping things as close to a mono species work, prison conditions as possible is just cheaper to operate and easier to control.
It’s actually an allegory for the holocaust specifically, on top of the general racism and police brutality. There are a lot of little details like taking their shoes that are too specific not to be intentional.

The hate against other races was a Palpatine and empire thing. Vader hated everybody and killed anyone who failed him.
I think Mickey is right. Because Serkis was saying "How many hands does it take for one word to get through?" Communication, even with the hand signals, is extremely difficult cause everyone is isolated. It seems people are "released" and then placed on another level that is father away. The facility goes down for thousands of feet. Who knows how many stories below the surface it goes.

0:53 There aren't many planets in Star Wars that are home to one species of people. Even the Water worlds have several different species. Kasyyyk, however, did indeed seem to have only one intelligent species, but they had other forms of life, like really big bug looking creatures. Man of the worlds we've seen in Star Wars are like Tatooine, swarming with all sorts of people.
I think a better reason might be that people in prisons are separated by species for safety reasons. A Wookie would be able to overpower a human without issue. There are no Wookies in the Empire...at least I don't think there are. If you only have 12 guards per floor, you need to make sure that they'll be able to handle things. 12 guards isn't enough for what they have going on at the prisons on Narkina 5, which is why they use pain and fear to establish control.
There are other forms of prisons in Star Wars. We've seen them in the prequels and more recently in Rogue One--Jane Erso was in a prison that looks more like one of our world, and her cellmate looked like a male alien. Her prison also had armed Stormtroopers.
Cassian committed a low level crime. I assume that he and others were deemed non-threating, which explains the lack of security. They all think they'll get out if they just do the time. They're compliant prisoners! The Empire is using that to their advantage, using them to build their equipment without having to worry about sabotage, as these people really think that they'll get to go home. They know what other prisons are like, as they are reminded when they arrive on Narkina 5 about how much better conditions are here, and they certainly look the part: private cell, clean, fresh clothes, all the food you can eat and prompt medical care.

19:39 CORRECT! No one ever leaves. You just get moved around the prison and continue working. This prison screwed up by moving someone on the fourth floor to the second floor of the same prison. The guards that screwed up should have moved the prisoner to an odd numbered floor since they'd be on opposite sides of the prison. Prisoners on odd numbered floors or even numbered floors are bound to run into each other somewhere given the odd jobs they end up doing--someone's got to cook, clean, press uniforms, etc. There's also the day and night shift change over, which we see in this episode.
Actually, regarding why the prisoners are all humans, there's a more practical explanation then racism. It's cheap and more efficient to have standardized production line for just one species. If you have a production line that have to cater to different size, shape, work space, number of fingers and arms, it's less uniform and could cost more, slow production time. It's logistics. While the Stormtrooper are about racist, the same principle apply to both Stormtrooper and Clone troopers as well.
Also. Mon Mothma doesn't need 'more' money, it's that she hasn't cover the tracks of her transactions very well, so she has several major transfer of money she can't explain if the Empire comes asking. And Organized Crimes are good at doing creative accounting. Real life revolutions always have criminal ties, it's default.
It's always been known that the Empire is a human-centric racist organization. You can call them 'Human supremacists' and they were based on the Nazis who were white supremacists. But in this show they show the Empire as being just as much like the Nazis, and just like the British Empire (especially the Aldhani episodes). Really intelligent writing honestly. Also I dont think next ep will be the prison break, it'll be more like the preparation/planning episode, and then ep 11 or so will be the break. Either way, AMAZING show

I sometimes really do wonder how much of the human supremacy element is unintentional. Like, I suspect it's mostly just later writers explaining in-universe what in reality was caused by the fact that most of the actors are human.

The Empire is extremely xenophobic. Not sure if it passed over to current canon, but in legends the Empire actually reclassified a number of species, one of which being the Wookies, as non-sentient to make it less of a political issue to use them for slave labor.

Well it's not specifically a commentary on racism, but fascism, nazi-germany fascism to be precise. And yet, of course fascism also included rascism, but I think it's an important destinction when talking about Star Wars. As the current systemic-rascism is primarly an american talking point and problem, the problem of opression is one everyone on this planet can in some way relate to. George Lucas himself once said in an interview that, except againt Droids, there is no "racism" in the Star Wars cosmos that is comparable to ours in the real world, as these societies in his mind developed past that issue. And I do think that the creators of this show, the Gilroys, do respect Lucas highly (just look at the last 2 episodes and their major homage to THX 1138) and would not insert their own current politics into this show (even though Disney would love to). That being said, Palpatine notoriously hated all kinds of species and cultures, even the clones for not being "pure", I guess he hates everybody that is "weak".

@Mickey The Empire isn't PURELY human, theres a few notable outliers like the Chiss race who are pretty involved, its just that they ARE a racist collective, and in a general sense, I think theres just more humans in the galaxy than most other species, for whatever reason.

Darth Vader wasnt a racist... he did hate tusken raiders as a group so he did have prejudice in his heart. But it wasnt to all other species.
As for the Palpatine however... he was racist against other species of aliens. He did not trust them and would not allow them in his army. It was a big deal when Grand Admiral Thrawn was able to tise through the ranks.
Which makes me wonder why Sly Moore is still part of Palpatine's inner circle after 14 to 15 years.
