Gotta let the customer make the call on replacing both or just one. Reminds me of that old commercial line " You can pay me now or you can pay me later." Nice job on the vid and explaining the process!
Ha, I am 70 and still have my dad's old vise grips....don't know how old they are, but they work great......good video and well explained ...you got my sub for that.... I had to replace the coils on my horizontal Kohler Command sp27hp which is in a Toro Z Master. This was at the start of the pandemic, and no one would work on anything for you....did it in a barn stall using a headlight, and dang what a tedious job to lean in and get access. I did manage to talk to a mechanic by phone who told me to be sure to set to .010 using a metal feeler as business cards can vary too much. It is actually recommended to remove the entire engine to get access, but I had no place and equipment to do that. Now the same mower is starting to have some bogging when turning uphill and I wonder if the valves or a head gasket might be the problem....I have kept the head clean of debris as you explained to help dissipate heat.....BTW, I think you should recommend replacing both....going to cost more later if not, and most reasonable folk will understand that...if not, the ball is on their side.
Great video! I may lean toward just replacing the one coil since the dirt seemed to be the culprit and the other side looked OK. Need to tell customer to clean as part of regular maintenance or else they will be back for another coil…or worse! Thanks for all you do with your videos.
The customer would have no idea about how clogged up that cylinder was unless he took of the shroud and thats not a normal maintenance job. that repair probably saved the customer hundreds of dollars if you didnt find the clog when you did the repair . Great job
It is best to replace both coils at the same time even though the other is not bad yet. All ways let your customers know this is the best thing to do because two days from now you could be back in there replacing it. I know it's a gamble either way. If I were a customer I would feel better having both new ignition coils.
Glad I came across this video. Had a cub cadet with a blown engine and bought another cub with a running engine to replace. The running engine had 2 new coils in it and the PO had cut the grounding wires and relied on the fuel solenoid to kill the engine. I rewired it correctly and lo and behold it would not run. If I disconnected the ground wire it would run on that cylinder. I replaced the coils with the older style from the blown engine and it operated fine. Could it be that the diodes are going bad or could it be the coils were bad. They did have very weak spark with the tester and I know the coils were exposed to high heat because the engine was very dirty.
Thanks for your video(s). I have a Kohler CH25S 25hp Kohler v-twin on a John Deere Ztrak m665. It cut off while mowing with no obvious warnings. It would not start back. I sprayed starter fluid in it and it fired with a knocking engine noise. I didn't try anything else but if I have gave you enough info, what would your opinion be based on what I told you? I did notice that it had a new oil leak from the valve cover seal on oil filter side of engine. Thanks in advance.
I work on these for welding..linclons and millers. I was told they could run 5000 hours before an overhaul. Ch 23s and ch25s. When one side went gone I would just replace the other side as well. Company didnt care.😅 But we had some machines hitting ten thousand hours...
I have a used craftsman with a Koehler 17 HP when I got it it was rigged with a kill switch because the motor won’t shut off at low throttle. Plus the mower will bog after cutting for a little while. Could that be coil related?
I have the same mower but has a governor problem. It runs wide open. I cannot find any governor videos on that particular engine. I have adjusted it every way I could imagine and nothing helps. I'm guessing the gear inside of the engine is bad. Any help would be appriciated. Thank you!
Question. I have a 27hp kolher commando pro. I changed the oil pan gasket and now the mower won't keep running. A lot of blowback from the dip stick tube. Didn't notice that before and it ran great??
hi mowermedic watched videos---have kohler 25 hp procommand on a scags turftiger replaced fuel pump and carb starts and stops and starts and stops HELP before coyldnt get started at all
if its a kohler with the sams modules they automatically both get upgraded. there's a lot of them still out there. kohlers also get a diode harness. otherwise its the customers choice. they get told the consequences
I'd go ahead and replace both coils making sure it runs good and don't even give them an option. You wouldn't just replace one coil on your car would you.

I tell my customers that it is cheaper to do both now and there is no guarentee if he choses to do only one. Thanks for the great video.

I remember when you originally posted this in 2 videos. It is a great video!!
Awesome video on checking the cylinders for spark that was alot of dirt on that 1 cylinder

If one coil is out, both get replaced. No exceptions.
Let customer know and let them choose to do one or both.
Good video Thanks

I would definitely replace the second coil if it was mine, but give the customer the option and price.
This would have been more exciting if that fuel filter was leaking with the spark tester next to it
The video title would be how not to diagnose a kohler enfine. Bonus footage. Themowermedic1 blows himself up
@@THEMOWERMEDIC1 mower medic goes ala ak bar on a cub cadet

I explain to the customer that I am already there and that you don’t know how long the other one will last. Most of my customers leave it up to me.

I always replace in sets...As your girl says....It saves us both..Time,Money, and frustration!
Sir i have a Kohler Command 25 hp on a Vermeer sc30 tx stump grinder the oil now light is on how do i reset it ? thank you
Yes if you have the time and money I would do both, that way it will be easier on both sides the customer and you 😉

Great video, how does one contact you?
One coil or two ? Depends on the owners overtime that month .. lol... thats directly wallet related which is a weekly shortage 😂
Great video; but my gov is messed up from factory and I want to fix it too.

Yep I order the complete dsam upgrade kit. If a diode’s test good I ship it
Dirty engine can over heat the coils also
Replace bad coil. Wait till the other one goes bad. Then replace.
Replace both and keep good one for back up
Do them both if customer consents
Replace both coil now
I'd go ahead and replace both coils making sure it runs good and don't even give them an option. You wouldn't just replace one coil on your car would you.
I'd let him make up his mind
I replace them both and keep good old one as a spare
