Enjoyed this match and hope to see more from the Battle at the Palace. Bought a ticket for next Saturday but flights are pricey so close to Easter. Glad to see a decent crowed on hand.
I remember seeing this as a kid and it seemed pretty bad ass.. I like sports like these that are lesser known, this was fun and we used to try and play it as kids but we didn't have the right equipment..
I'm new to watching this sport, I have a few questions hoping someone can help me out here. Are the helmet colours significant? After catching the ball, how many steps can a player take before throwing? When can the ball hit the side wall? Thanks for any help offered
Hello and welcome! Jai-Alai is essentially extreme racquetball. The helmet colors are player preference but at one time they were color coordinated. Helmets were required by law after the late 1960's when Orbea, the world champion, was struck in the head and suffered permanent brain damage leading to his retirement. After catching the ball, the player must be in constant motion for the throw. They can take as many steps as they like so as long as the catch and throw is no more than 3 seconds. The ball can hit the side wall at any time, however it must touch the front wall and remain in bounds. Only one bounce off the floor is allowed just like racquetball. Hope you enjoy the games. More videos coming soon!
I am here because of a crossword clue. I've never heard about this game but I find it very interesting. I wonder if there are any players in 🇨🇦. Cool stuff.
Jai Alai is finally returning to Vegas. Derek Stevens is finalizing plans to build a fronton the will overlook Fremont street, you can walk right up and place your bets at street level.
KAYO doco >> UA-cam >> now I'm a massive fan. It brings back that feeling you had as a child, when you threw a ball against a really high wall and tried to catch it when it came down. Except the ball is now a rock, and it's flying at crazy speed lol. Too bad I live here in Australia...maybe one day.
Always happy to welcome new fans. I could see it being popular in Australia if it was ever brought over there. It's definitely crazier and more spectacular in person. Which Netflix doc did you watch?
@@Jai-Alai_Aficionado I really hope it does one day. I don't know how it's not already. Sorry not Netflix, KAYO '30 for 30' doco, updated my comment. I just don't know how it isn't an Olympic sport...I'd much rather watch a ball fly at over 300km/h than freaking badminton...lol
They should at least showcase it in the Olympics, it is a very good sport to watch, far, far more interesting than most of the sports that are actually Olympic.
In the early 70s, my dad had a hispanic co worker friend take us to Tijuana. He took us to a jail alai game to watch fir a while. Still don't know what the game is about or how it's played still remember the speed of thr ball and the amazing catches and throws woth the wicker hand baskets.
I'm American never seen this before can somebody explain me how you win how do you score points how this all works I would love to try this sport I just don't know where to try that or how it played or how it even works so somebody let me know please for real though❤❤
I think I played Yohan in a game of rubber ball at N. Miami Amateur. They were saying the he was the new amateur champ. He was playing while holding the basket with both hands
Don’t know anything about this sport, just wonder does anyone know how much stress is put on their shoulder when they throw the ball? Looks similar to baseball pitchers to me.
This is Jai Alai with Pros Basque Players & not the Amatures at Magic City. Real Jai Alai, Real Court 176 FT. Real Ball ( Pelota) harder than a golf ball & covered with Goat Skin not the plastic ball used at Magic City. Real solid granite walls that give the ball different action when it strikes unlike the Plexiglass walls of Magic City. That's why here you will see Chula's ( When ball comes off the back wall on the ground with no chance of return. The only USA players here are experienced and have the skill to compete with the Basques, Spanish Nationals ( ALFONSO) & Mexicans (Inclan) Joey, Tevin, 2 great USA Champions.
Double bounce, lands out of bounds (to the open side), hits the 3ft mat at the front (black bar), or hits the top net. Also there's a 3 second shot timer
I am fascinated with this game the whole my life I have seen it the firs time. I do not forget to turn back see it regardless this is not generally popular.
We used to play something like this as kids but with a tennis ball and using your hands. Couldn’t bobble it or hesitate during your catch and throw or you lost a point. I’m not sure how we came up with it but looking back I’m sure it was from a friend who had a parent that was a jai alai fan. Very interesting sport and clearly takes a ton of skill to play well.
I'm watching this wondering where I can go to learn it. I'm too old for this shit, but I played a lot of raquetball. This looks like that, only a lot better.

Jai Alai
What a cool sport.
Here in the basque country ( where it comes from) we call it ZESTA PUNTA ( Basket Point).
In fact, Jai Alai litterally means Happy Feast.

It is Cesta Punta.
