This is why I tried several modelers and finally came back to " guitar + deluxe reverb" = bliss. No more chasing tone, just turn it on and it does what it does.
This is it! I have Captor X which let’s be practice with my amp silently. I downloaded the cab closet to my real combo and then never change it ever. No more endless tweaking
Well, it depends. I sold my pedalboard because 3/4 of my time I was playing with it. Buying new pedals, rewiring, trying different settings, etc. Kemper was the best buy for me. I exclusively use Kemper and the Plini plugin from Neural. 50% GAS cured.
I get the same with music production. Constantly trying new compressors and EQs. I only need one compressor, one EQ, and one reverb to make incredible music. Constantly searching through rows of possibilities, keeps me from making music and keeps me searching, indefinitely.
It just means that you are more of a nerd and engineer than a creative musician... And that is fine!! Accept it of yourself or work on it, but it isn't wrong :). I have the same with photography, as much as I want to focus on taking pictures, I always end up tweaking workflow, apps and even writing my own software to help me in it. I just accept that side of me :). That also means that if someone says' play the guitar more or you will not get better at it ' I don't feel guilty at all, I don't want to be better at this, I'm enjoying what I do :)
Honestly, I've owned my Pod Pro 2.0 for close to 20 years and with the help of a few specific pedals and IRs I'm still recording amazing tones on the fly with it today.
Back in 1988 I had this super cheap rotted out SUNN bass amp, I played my guitar through that thing for a couple of years being a poor 15 year old. I cranked it up as hard as it would go, I got it to distort and do what I wanted, it was me who made that amp sing, people loved my sound and always asking me about my tone, and I was oh no way you don't wanna know ha hah ha ha ha
This is like a Super Bowl pregame show. I’m 56. It feels good to be on the other side of gear addiction. It’s about making music. I have a Kemper. It sounds brilliant. It inspires. And it doesn’t blow me ears off.
I’m 47- in the last few months I’ve emerged out of a 10 year gear buying spree. I’m done. Ready to sell 70 percent of the stuff. Time to focus on making music and improving my playing
@@megazoned3973 LOL I'm 47 and I just went through this. Sold 9 guitars, kept 5. Sold all the pedals except for 8, built my little portable board, and kept a Princeton Reverb. My sound is locked in and I now spend all my time just jamming out and learning
The average person listening to music doesn’t give a rat’s ass as to what is being played by the musician. They just wanna hear a good tune. The only people who care about gear is us who are watching this now; the gear heads and TOs (Tone Obsessives).
Its really true but for me its not the point. You really want your tone to sounds right and feel right for YOU. It will help you to bring your best ideas, riffs etc. Otherwise, why wouldnt you just play Squier and Line 6 Spider. Of course - nobody in the crowd will care about your gear but if you have better time on stage and you enjoy your tone - people will notice that.
Both are true, the listeners don't know, hell a lot of "trained ears"don't know.. but also there is something to be said about a piece of gear that inspires you. Doesn't matter if it's tube or digital. I dare say sometimes the Helix or whatever is actually better and I'm a tube guy.
@@AD1978leo Yes, and I would add another thing. It's best to have both of these options - real amp and modeling unit - and just choose one of these depending on what venue you play. In some venues I still prefer my tube amp and pedalboard but in other its easier to just take Helix ;) I have 80 watt tube amp, pedalboard and Helix and I pretty much ended up tone chase.
@@AD1978leo yeah totally agree. I’ve always been hardcore valve amps, to me they just sound better. But if I had deeper pockets I’d have no problem splurging on a KEMPER.
Yes. He is right however. The main emphasis nowadays is just gear, more gear, more expensive gear. I don’t have a Helix. I have a bunch of pedals amps and guitars and I get all the tones I need. No modeling for me.
Henning!!! Been watching your channel since like 15k subs! You’ve been a huge influence on me! Thank you for all the hours of content, info and entertainment you’ve given me!
I have one Telecaster, one DRRI and one TS9, and I'm happy with it. Maybe I'll create the second Tele with maple neck, from stratosphere parts, it's nice to have but not so critical, I like my sound and don't need 20 other sounds. I can like music, I'm happy from it
@@ToneJunkieTV I imagine the evolution will be interesting, as things are becoming guitar playing computers, so perhaps next is a company that has integrated units for recording inbuilt i.e. the BOSS style recorders. drum machine etc built into one unit, similar to how the Digitech GNX units... With the modern UI and control/ compatibility etc it is fascinating :D
You’re spot on dude. There’s option overload as it is, now all these IRs and profiles only add to that. The pursuit of tone as a hobby is something most folks get caught up in because it’s like a candy store where you can’t get fat (just broke). If that’s what turns you up to 11 more power to you. At the end of the day, if you’re a professional, you find something that works and usually end up using it way longer than anyone thinks is “cool”. My eleven rack has a bunch of custom presets because I’ve been using it since 2009 and I still get complements on the tone. Doesn’t mean I don’t have some real amps that I use too. It’s a ridiculously fun time to be a guitar player. The cheapest gear sounds great. Almost NOTHING sounds bad anymore.
Agreed. Goes for the guitars themselves as well. The daughter of a friend of mine bought a Stagg guitar. One of their 'heavy metal models'. It was under 200 Euro's and I was amazed by the sound of the pickups and even the action wasn't half bad. Of course I could riff a large list of things that are mediocre or worse on that guitar but someone willing to actually play could play on that instrument. Even for live shows for all I care as this 'frowned upon gear' keeps it's tuning fairly well. People that love to play will play on anything and don't be bothered by image, looks or tone if there are budget limitations.
This is the new TV. Watching guitar videos is like watching CSI Miami, no one needs another murder mystery but it's entertaining. I watch drum videos, I have never even touched a drumset.
This is the absolute opposite of me. I find a good sound, and I'll stick with it forever. If for some reason I have to change gear due to failure, I'm not jazzed at all about having to find something else to fulfil that need, I consider it a pain in the ass. I just want to switch on and create, with no hassles or dialling in.
I've got a Two Rock Opal, Trinity 18, Matchless 15, Fender Concert II and a Fuchs and I haven't touched them in 2 years since getting a Helix LT. Maybe Tone Junkie want's to lug them and my 4x12 cab and my honking pedal board and baby rack (2290) and hook all that stuff up for me...or I could just plug and play.
GOOD(CAPITALIST?!)POINTS! My dad, who was a “prestige car” salesman once asked me ‘ what do I sell?’ And I replied cars! And then he said ‘NO! specifically what do I sell really when it all comes down to it?’ I thought about it and said fancy cars? He said “nope! I sell dreams! that’s all just dreams…”
honestly just buy one modeler and be done with it. you dont really need 2,000 cabs. pick a couple and go with it. no one wants to really scroll through 2,000 cabs.
Agree with all of this and I own a kemper, BUT I think that there is some frustration with scrolling through a list of amps captured at various operating points to find one that works, instead of just setting up the amp for your guitar and desired operating point and going on your way. The model gives you that experience, at least in theory.
You’re honest is awesome. This really kicked ass man. I love unfiltered honesty. It’s so true. We are all obsessed with guitar tone. Absolutely obsessed. It’s escapism and a form of addiction. I still miss back in 2007 when I used a TS-808, a Strat, JCM2000 or a Fender SuperSonic with a Vox Satriani Big Bad Wah and and EVH Phase 90....and I would of thought any more pedals than that was complete overkill. I may of have a Roger Mayer Axis Fuzz but it was very difficult to find and I rarely used it. I bought it cuz I love Hendrix. But most gigs I did was a Strat, a Tube Screamer and a Fender amp and used a Phaser or Wah if I wanted some “ out there” or different tones. I worried about playing and learning how to play better. In the past 5 years I became obsessed with gear and lately I scaled wayyyy back and it feels great.
I love my Fractal stuff. I used to hate things like the POD back in the day but now in 2021 the modelers like I use not only sounds great they FEEL great playing them.
You are right about GAS but it doesn't work the same for everyone. Personally, for an amp sim, I prefer a simple interface and a small footprint. I would choose the Iridium or the ACS1 over Kemper, Helix and the rest, any day. I buy truckloads of pedals, but I couldn't be arsed to look for the AC30 profile with the right amount of sag or whatever and the perfect mic positioning. It just doesn't get my heart racing.
Modeling is not gonna die. Its here to stay. Line 6 may go into profiling, but u are going to have fender, boss, mooer and other companies hit the modeling world.
I watched a “rig rundown” with Dave Mustaine, and he describes how he went from an old late 60’s Marshall Plexi to the Rocktron Prophecy II and then to a Line 6 unit. He talked about how simple and reliable his setup was, and the drawbacks of using and maintaining old tube amps. In yet another (later) interview, Dave goes full circle describing his journey back to the old trusted and true tube amplifiers. You know, not enough is being said about the “human touch“ and how the HAND provides some of the greatest inspiration and influence on tone.
Sooo I got a Guitar and want to buy something more to make it sound great, but I do not what to buy... So lets clear the question you got all Amps so I need a pedal Plattfrom at Home, Do I buy the Fender Deluxe Reverb which is too loud at home or the Strymon Iridium, which I need to buy another great speaker to it ?? It has to sound very soundscapy and warm, so is the Iridim then still an optrion with the right speaker ?
I still use the same amp, but I play it through a UA OX. It still inspires me and doesn’t bring the neighbors wrath. As long as it inspires you, you have the right gear. Play!
You are absolutely right and the first person to mention it Good for you I’ve had several Fractals and get fed up with browsing through literally millions of possibilities
This my friend is one of the most honest, true and intelligent contributions for the music community there is! I never saw your channel before and subscribed immediately. Great work
Well said! I had the Spark amp for a week. I was definitely spending more time looking for certain tones than I was actually playing my guitar. It got to the point where I actually started to get a freakin headache! I prefer just plugging into a tube amp, with a few great pedals and PLAYING. Tube amps sound organic too.
I’ve had the opposite experience. Yes I fished around on the tone cloud a little at first to see if I could find certain tones to match certain songs/artists, but very soon found 4 tones I loved and loaded them into the presets. With these 4 tones and a Tele I can quickly dial in a sound to match almost anything I wanna jam along with on Spotify. Eight months later and I’m playing the Spark thru headphones everyday and haven’t even opened the app once in months.
Really great insights here! I stick with Quilter amps and a handful of pedals. Never been into modelers (not that there is anything wrong with them - I just find them boring). What is “need” vs. “want” - great points!
@@joegrant413 it depends. We have a “silent stage” at the church where I play, so I go solely direct, but if I’m playing elsewhere, it’s usually a combination of DI and the amp.

This is why the best unit out right now is the Axe FX 3. If the models built into the Fractal were "okay" or "fine" I think tone matching would be emphasized a little more (almost to the level of the Kemper's Profiling). The tone matching is a great feature, but there's so many models in the Fractal unit that are amazing and they add more every update (which at this point I feel like I'm updating every other day), that I don't need to use the tone matching feature. Maybe one day Fractal will say "we're done adding more models, the tone matching feature will allow you to add as many amps as your heart desires." I've owned a Kemper and it was great, but the Axe Fx sounds so much better. The amps sound better, the effects are night and day better, you can stereo amps with only one unit (you have to have two Kempers to run two amps), and the editing software is miles better than Kemper. I'm not a Kemper "hater" by any means, but Fractal is the best in the modeling/capturing/profiling/matching game right now. I think you're dead on with the Helix stuff though. They'd be shooting themselves in the foot if they don't add some sort of feature that can compete with the matching/profiling/capturing of the Fractal/Kemper/QC.
A lot of people need a 12 step program for GAS. How did our guitar hero’s make it without all this stuff? Robben Ford, Eric Clapton, Angus Young, Larry Carlton, Robert Cray, Dicky Betts, Billy Gibbons, Derek Trucks, didn’t get to be guitar gurus because of a piece of gear. It was from their playing and passion.
It could be virtually any amp model that rings a bell. I build my tone ground up, starting by trolling through the amps. Then on to eq(roll each one to zero, then bring up each one starting with bass), volume, gain, then on to effects. I've got a tone right now, that is face melting. The reverb draws the mind deep into the wave of sound, & rhythm. I can't tell you what amp it is, what particular effects(brand not type), but can say how it was pieced together, & that I've accomplished an all encompassing sound. I believe I've saved tons of time by this method. Also my playing style incorporates many inspirations, incorporating volume dynamics, classical, heavy blues, & nuanced jazz, this method lends itself to tuning into your individual riff style. Try to coax the sweetness out of whatever hardware/software that is in front of you, & save the profile. Then you can see if it continues to work over time, to make it into your repertoire.
As a bassist, I've found my sound. 1980 BC Rich Eagle deluxe bass, Tech 21 dUg Pinnick sig preamp pedal, Geezer Butler wah going through an Orange Bass Terror with Orange 1x15. DI goes to the board with the Tech 21 Pinnick pedal. I get everything I need right there. Also, live, the more basic setup, the less goes wrong...and I can identify the problem easily if it does (it hasn't).
There are way more guitar tones on recordings which are made with digital reamping than you might think. And I don't speak about new stuff. That is made since the late 80s.
At some point will you turn around and just get what you're trying to emulate? Tried to keep the rig modest and appropriate for ability level. *waits for stereo frfr cabinet for fx to arrive*
“People are always upset on the Internet.” This pretty much sums up the video. Yeah why can’t Quad Cortex come out more sooner, why my Kemper suddenly sound so bad after watching AB comparison videos. Hahaha you have hit it right in the bullseye. Of course myself is included in the herd.
So should I get the Helix, Headrush, Kemper or AxeFX? (Serious question), just getting back into guitar after getting lost in synths and drum machines for 5 years.
26 minutes in and I am still watching, do I need therapy? NO but I do need (want) a new guitar and some more profiles. I will continue to watch and listen to YOU my personal Tone Junkie 🎸🎸🎸🎸
I believe all future modelers will become profilers soon enough. With growing technology they will come to a point where it will be exactly the same. I could even go further as to say that once, Marshall and Mesa and the likes create something, someday the real tube amps could disappear and tones would just stay "in the cloud" accessible forever as a trophy of how we used to record those tones. (like decades from now)
Bang on point. Individuals may disagree because they only require a specific set of sounds and they've found it, and honestly thats great more power to them. But, we are, in general terms, a ravenously hungry consumer society. The vast majority of guitarists are bedroom learners, covers band players, or small club guys, all seeking the next level of satisfaction, thats why there's so many sites dedicated to gear reviews or tutorials doing so well, Pete Thorn, Rabea, Rob Baker, Ben Eller, Zombie guitar, GMM, Guitar Tricks etc etc. The thing is they are often great, its free (or cheap) entertainment, it feeds the GAS. People do want to hear the new holy grail pedal, or learn the new fast track secret tip or exercise to save hours of practice, and they want it now. Same goes for tones. In front of the computer on a Friday night you can spend 10-30 bucks or so and get a taste of a coveted 2-3-grand amp, instantly. The ability for someone who knows what they're doing to get a decent profile (or capture ) pack out in a day or two with the lure that it's from the real genuine amp, as opposed to a company spending significant chunks of time and resources component modelling an amp from the ground up, means they are simply able to feed the appetite so much faster and regularly than a modeller ever realistically could. At the end of the day it's supply and demand like any other business.
Right on John Miller! I thought I was the only Kemper owner that was completely happy with mine, & the STOCK amps/fx it came with. Even the amps I thought would be useless, for ME... I hav been amazed at the tones I was able to dial in that I LOVE, & made part of my everyday rig. U can gets so deep into these amps, its awsome & FUN. I read ur comment & was happy to realize im not alone. I thought I was being lazy & not getting the most out of my investment.
I had AXE FX for a couple years and dumped it and went back to playing real amps. I'm so much happier I play more and tweak less. While modeling sounds great and definitely has its place. More isn't always better. I'm glad I never got rid of my real amps
And that's the reason why guitar is disappearing. They are always looking for the perfect pedal or amp tone and not creating music whit what they have. And playing the same 60s 70s style of music that has been created already
A 65 deluxe reverb reissue is all you need. It is the GOAT. I had a brief encounter with modern modeling, and after 30 minutes of attempts to set everything up, I didn’t see the point of continuing when I could just flip the power on the Fender and get a pleasing sound.
I bought a new Fender Cybertwin long ago, with tons of sounds and affects, but in the end I only use 3 or 4 sounds I created myself, they sound like the old amps I used in the past, because in them I found my signature sound. Identity in my sound I find the most important thing. I even bought a new Plexi sort of boutique amp, because it sounds like the Jcm-800 I had in the past. To be honest I made a long journey in effect and sound land, but in the end I arrived at the point I started. With effects it is the same story. In live situation I will never have to use more then one amp one guitar and a couple of effects. It is the same with computers, people look at the best specs, they don't look at what they actually need. I use a 10 year old 12 core Mac Pro, because it does what I need in the studio and was affordable, I had the luck the unit was hardly used ,so I guess I will be happy with that for years. So my believe is we only need one guy to sound like Steve Vai or any guitar player, find you own sound and identity. BE YOU ! The exception is people who want to exactly copy music in f.i. cover bands, they will have to use those tools.
While I do agree with a lot that he says, to me, he is making a case for modelers. To me, he's right. I love trying new pedals, new amps, new reverbs, getting new sounds and listening to another guy's point of view on tweaking. My Helix allows me to try tons of these much much cheaper than if I had to go out and purchase a physical pedal, amp, etc. I can purchase 18 really good spot on sounding amps from Glenn DeLaune (plug not intended ) for under $30 and stay busy all week, or longer, playing with them. And even if there are only a couple that I really like and will use out of the 18 I'm good with that, money well spent! For me, the Helix was a game changer. It took me a while though, yes I was that guy asking if it was really worth the price tag. Even after I took the plunge I questioned if I had made a really bad mistake. There was a little bit of a learning curve for me but I am so thankful I stuck with it and I haven't looked back. I literally walk into a gig carrying everything myself in 1 trip !! I'm getting a little older and I don't miss lugging my 1/2 stack in and out of my truck, up and down stairs, setting it up and tearing it down. But I will admit, I get a little nostalgic and haven't been able to sell my 1/2 stack. I do fire it up about once a year when the wife it gone and crank it to 11 !! All of this is just my opinion.... you mileage may vary
Good thoughts on this stuff. The draw for the QC for me is the potential support for the Neural Plugins that I currently have on the hardware, the form factor, and the ability to clone my Diezel so I don't have to drag it around. Once that happens, I KNOW people online will be asking for the files.
That was great. Awesome rant!! Really enjoyed that. It's funny because it's very true....for some people. It's kind of a spectrum thing...like autism. How much a person spends obsessing over different options varies a lot. Personally, I think that a person really needs to ask themselves why they're doing it and figure out if they're really focused on the wrong thing. It can be terribly unhealthy. This kind of behaviour exists in a lot of areas. Camera guys are also like this to some extent. Some would rather spend their time analyzing lens sharpness charts and debating about which gear is better than going out and taking photos. But...anyway...you make some good points and I agree that it would be a missed opportunity if Line6 didn't include some kind of profiling feature. We'll see.
Well said ... so do you think Fractal will release a bigger FM3 type floor modler this year or would it be safe to buy an FM3 soon. Asking for a friend ! Wink Wink.
Now i have your everything pack oh boy alot of nice tone just scratching the surface. One questions in the future do i still get new amps your profile.
After playing guitar for more than 45 years, tried everything at the end, is exactly what you said, is not what you need but you want, coz when like me (HX Stomp + Powercab 212 plus), I´m very happy and exploring into a world that I even knew existed. I´m 59 and everything is about what makes you feel good. Excellent vídeo, and from Costa Rica... PURA VIDA!!!
You’re right. I had my Kemper for 8 years. Saved a boatload of money over that period. But it’s just not the same in sound or feel and I sold it and am much more inspired.
@@WaveOfPig until they can do that modeling is still king imho I need the ability to tweak my tone real time not get a snapshot of someone elses ideal tone

tube amp player for decades here. I love them. However, the progress in amp modeling and effects is so good now, it’s easy to get many good sounds with them. The convenience of one pedal does it all good is where I’m going..
Dude, I was thumbing around UA-cam late last night cause I couldn't sleep and happened to see this. I felt like you were talking to me directly. You might as well been in my living room. Everything you said is me. Never heard of you until now. I subscribed immediately. Thanks.
You're right about almost everything, except that modelling is dead. Just got an Fm3 and in one day I got all the tones that kemper couldn't provide. It's like having the best of the best profiles made from the best producer in the world. I didn't expect it but Fractal is much much better. I don't need each vendor's perception of an amp (which btw is poor in most cases, I don't know how people are using Mbritt marshalls for example, they are pretty funny compared to an actual micd marshall, where is the punch, where are the harmonics), I need THE amp, and Fm3 gives that. EVERY tone is usable and realistic, unlike the Kemper.
I have one really really nice custom shop 58 les Paul, an orange ad30htc and 2x12 cab, a basic pedal board (comp, reverb, ts808, tuner, eq) and I just added an HX Stomp and expression pedal into the mix. I can get pretty much any sound that a person can squeeze out of a les Paul. I’ve always been the type to find “my sound” and then just stick to that, but having a few more options has opened a few more creative doors for me. I still stay in about 4 presets though. I’ve never understood the type of player that complains about having “only 1000” profiles on their Kemper. This is the best ever time to be a guitar player with all the tools we have available, and so many people get so overwhelmed by the gear that they forget to actually just play their fucking guitar.
Just now? Im not even that bad gearhead, but sure has a GAS. Have had it for a long time. But for amp stuff, Helix, Kemper and Neural DSP has cured it. Im not looking for tube amps anymore. Sure I still have few, but rarely even play with them anymore. Now its just mainly Neurals plugins. Crazy world.
I've started the video a little bit skeptical, but you have a truly fair point here sir! It's the most truthful video I've seen in a long time, and it made me think a lot about it. Thanks for sharing this! Cheers!
Im actually here because the algorithm put this in my feed when i havent watched guitar videos in quite a while lmao. (PS. Im not obsessed with guitar tone either)
I am so glad you told us! I am sure everyone here is so glad to hear that you didn’t actually seek out this video and that you are NOT obsessed with tone. I mean we all figured that this guy obviously can’t be talking about YOU but I know deep down we were all still a little unsure... but of COURSE IT WAS JUST THE ALGORITHM!!!!!! THANK JESUS!!!!!!!!
Very interesting point of view. I think it's kind of similar to almost any aspect of life. We don't really need a new cell phone every year, we usually don't by new clothes because we really have nothind to wear etc. We just love to have new things all the time.
Its funny how as soon as the Kemper has some competition, modeling is suddenly dead. Its actually never been so alive. The guitar didnt die when companies other than Fender started making guitars. Effects didnt die when companies other than Boss started making pedals. Modeling is not dying, its actually exciting how much better its getting. Some of this stuff is 100% correct, but so what...We watch more than one movie, listen to more than one song, own more than one guitar, own more than one pedal, why not own more than one modeller and a new profile every week. The fact that he is highlighting this stuff actually means modelling is alive more now than ever
SPOT ON DUDE EXACTLY WHAT I FEEL MODELING WASNT DEAD WHEN KEMPER WAS THE ELITE THE SO CALLED ELITE ITEM TO COVET LOL🤣😂😂. Now ITS STILL THE SAME MODELER EVERY ONE WAS SO PROUD TO SAY THEY OWN, BUT NOW BECAUSE GOD HAS GIVEN ANOTHER HUMAN A OPPORTUNITY TO SHINE ........MODELING IS 💀 DEAD WHA ? ABSOLUTE NON SENSE ! Bro really MORE GUITARS AND MODELERS HAVE BEEN SOLD OVER THE LAST 5 years than EVER BEFORE ....KIDS ARE BETTER PLAYERS THAN THEIR PARENTS WITH LESS BULKY GEAR ! Kids are learning more about amps thru modelers than they would have buying a single amp .....GREAT KNOWLEDGE IS BEING PASSED ALONG !
I was ready to be completely against everything you were about to say as I was listening to the disclaimer. However, you couldn’t of hit the point on the head any better. Well said indeed. Subscribed!
Damn. I think I'm going to play my guitar now... This guy nailed it. The hours I've spent chasing tone vs playing is upsetting. Thanks for the reality check!
Yes he is so right on point. I’m old enough to remember the days before digital. I have always gotten by with whatever gear I happened to have, though I have collected a lot of equipment over the years. These new guys who obsess on the latest gear are missing the point IMO. I still have a tape deck, 4 track cassette, that I can record decently on. It’s just a huge consumer market and for me, I don’t need all this stuff.
I feel my Kemper was the right device for jumping in to learn and soak up so many amps and styles. But lately, it feels like it has turned into a really expensive amp test trial machine and each day I'm more and more ready to jump off this tone chasing train to "settle down" and just buy one amp. ✌️ 😂
Great video & good arguments. IMO the greatest feature of the Kemper is it's tonal abilities. Capturing a recorded tone like a miced tube amp tone. Giving you feel and tone like a tube amp when playing through a guitar cab. Yeah, you have to work for it. Yeah, it takes time. Just like playing tube amps and pedals. That's part of the fun, isn't it? Well, it used to be. I do not need a touch screen to play guitar. But I do understand that a digital generation has different needs. It's just that these won't change mine. Peace & out.
“Some of you even spend more time listening to people talk about guitar than actually playing new stuff” ouch...
I’m sorry 😂

That also means that if someone says' play the guitar more or you will not get better at it ' I don't feel guilty at all, I don't want to be better at this, I'm enjoying what I do :)
I am a guitar player, the Kemper is a tool that allows me to carry out a task....& it does a damn good job
Honestly, I've owned my Pod Pro 2.0 for close to 20 years and with the help of a few specific pedals and IRs I'm still recording amazing tones on the fly with it today.
Same here!
I believe it was Tom Morrello who said "I stopped spending time chasing tone and spent more time on creating something unique with what I have".
I think he said something like this in his master class
@@prettylitch1785 Can Confirm. Said he hasn't changed his amp settings or pedals in decades.
wise man he is
Back in 1988 I had this super cheap rotted out SUNN bass amp, I played my guitar through that thing for a couple of years being a poor 15 year old.
I cranked it up as hard as it would go, I got it to distort and do what I wanted, it was me who made that amp sing, people loved my sound and always asking me about my tone, and I was oh no way you don't wanna know ha hah ha ha ha
That's because he has the sound he is wanting to achieve why change what works don't fix it if it ain't broke!!
Hi everyone. My names Tony....and I'm an addict.
😂🤣
guilty!
Welcome Tony. We’re glad you’re here.
Hi Tony, thanks for being here.
My name is Mike, and I'm also an addict. Want to jam and check out each other's gear? 😂
Hi Tony....
This is like a Super Bowl pregame show. I’m 56. It feels good to be on the other side of gear addiction. It’s about making music. I have a Kemper. It sounds brilliant. It inspires. And it doesn’t blow me ears off.
That’s the ticket. If you’re inspired to play, bingo! Play! No matter what the gear is!
I'm 59 playing a Line 6 Spider. People comment on my videos "great tone". Go figure!
@@AD1978leo
Yes, and I would add another thing.
It's best to have both of these options - real amp and modeling unit - and just choose one of these depending on what venue you play.
In some venues I still prefer my tube amp and pedalboard but in other its easier to just take Helix ;)
I have 80 watt tube amp, pedalboard and Helix and I pretty much ended up tone chase.
@@AD1978leo yeah totally agree. I’ve always been hardcore valve amps, to me they just sound better. But if I had deeper pockets I’d have no problem splurging on a KEMPER.
People will not listen to a shitty recording. Guitar tone helps a lot in that regards.
My man here is half trashing his customer base, but he isn't wrong and we are still watching...
This is interesting, right. And nobody is angry. We deserve this. We ask for this because deep down we know it's true.
Yes. He is right however. The main emphasis nowadays is just gear, more gear, more expensive gear. I don’t have a Helix. I have a bunch of pedals amps and guitars and I get all the tones I need. No modeling for me.
Haha I respect the fact he’s put me on blast 💥
very well said! Nobody needs any of it to create music... you can do that with so many of the tools we already have. We WANT the new toy.
Henning!!! Been watching your channel since like 15k subs! You’ve been a huge influence on me! Thank you for all the hours of content, info and entertainment you’ve given me!
But the title to his video is "modeling is dead". What it actually is is a meandering mess. It's somebody that likes to hear himself.
I have one Telecaster, one DRRI and one TS9, and I'm happy with it. Maybe I'll create the second Tele with maple neck, from stratosphere parts, it's nice to have but not so critical, I like my sound and don't need 20 other sounds. I can like music, I'm happy from it
@@garyclements6946 Yeah, I stopped listening after about 4 minutes. Never got to the point and what's up with the perpetual jazz hands?
Same bro... 😂
Me but with synthesizers
“Taste me you will see... more is all you need!”
True, but if you ever feel like changing your musical style (or play many styles) tone is link to that style to some degree.
If you don’t have a room full of vintage amps, modelling is more than fine. I don’t have a deep desire to profile my blues junior.
Yep!
Room or money???😣
YOU ARE IN DENIAL! ALL OF YOU!!
ADDICTS!!
BLEGHH!!
Man with a reactive load you get such great tones with your amps at any volume. The modellers aren't the same. Though they are so convenient
I`ve been saying that about when music producing.
honestly just buy one modeler and be done with it. you dont really need 2,000 cabs. pick a couple and go with it. no one wants to really scroll through 2,000 cabs.
That's why I never have changed from s gear. 5 great Amps a couple cabs and one delay and reverb. No messing around just sounds sounds and feels good
Had it once. It is great!
Agree with all of this and I own a kemper, BUT I think that there is some frustration with scrolling through a list of amps captured at various operating points to find one that works, instead of just setting up the amp for your guitar and desired operating point and going on your way. The model gives you that experience, at least in theory.
You can spend just as much if not more time tweaking a real amp and finding the right mic position.
You end up scrolling thru IRs instead hoping for that extra bit of magic. I spend more time tweaking my FM3 than I did my Kemper.
Really liked your take on it. Others may not even talk about it because they fear it might diminish their sales
Excellent point! Its all about sales. He has guts bringing this to light.
I love how I got a gorjira NDSP ad in the middle of your rant 😆😆
This is a great take! Thanks for the insight.
Tube Amp (Tweed) with Uni Vibe, Octave Multiplier, Wah Wah and Fuzz Face.
I've been laughing for days after watching this! Your words are the truth!
Sooo I got a Guitar and want to buy something more to make it sound great, but I do not what to buy...
So lets clear the question you got all Amps so I need a pedal Plattfrom at Home,
Do I buy the Fender Deluxe Reverb which is too loud at home or the Strymon Iridium, which I need to buy another great speaker to it ??
It has to sound very soundscapy and warm, so is the Iridim then still an optrion with the right speaker ?
I still use the same amp, but I play it through a UA OX. It still inspires me and doesn’t bring the neighbors wrath. As long as it inspires you, you have the right gear. Play!
You are absolutely right and the first person to mention it
Good for you
I’ve had several Fractals and get fed up with browsing through literally millions of possibilities
I JUST GOT A KEMPER A FEW WEEKS AGO AND YOU KNOW IT BRO. I HAVE BOUGHT MANY OF YOUR KEMPER PROFILES AND I LOVE ALL OF THEM.
You can’t beat a tube amp. Nothing comes near for me.
This my friend is one of the most honest, true and intelligent contributions for the music community there is! I never saw your channel before and subscribed immediately. Great work
Totally agree.
I have Quilter MicroPro 2. Do you use DI with your Quilter or a mic?
@@joegrant413 it depends. We have a “silent stage” at the church where I play, so I go solely direct, but if I’m playing elsewhere, it’s usually a combination of DI and the amp.
All Guitars in this song are completly recorded with the MOOER GE200 Amp Modeler.

Laughing in self-recognition - you’re absolutely right! Enough is never enough…
Maybe one day Fractal will say "we're done adding more models, the tone matching feature will allow you to add as many amps as your heart desires."
I've owned a Kemper and it was great, but the Axe Fx sounds so much better.
The notion that you can run outta things to play around with on the Axe-Fx III is just ignorant! :P
I couldn't agree more! I've been saying this for 2 years now.
Wow fantastic lecture 🎶❤️🎼
None of the greatest Electric guitar tones I have heard come originally from a modeler and never will, to me.
There are way more guitar tones on recordings which are made with digital reamping than you might think. And I don't speak about new stuff. That is made since the late 80s.
Lol
So then is the cortex as good of a profiler as kemper or are they just different? I am looking to buy one.
For years I've got 2 guitars and a Kemper with 3 profiles in it (never changed settings), so HA HA HA 😄
My Revv D20 is more simplistic and more old school! I’d rather focus on the music and making a good performance. I’m not a computer guy ! Lol
hope you also sent a copy of the video to your analyst
btw what do you think of mooer profilers?
That was like inception...HW. Not sure where it was going, but loved the content. You are 100% right.
Fuck doing one. I'm trying to do both.
Boomer take.
A 65 deluxe reverb reissue is all you need. It is the GOAT. I had a brief encounter with modern modeling, and after 30 minutes of attempts to set everything up, I didn’t see the point of continuing when I could just flip the power on the Fender and get a pleasing sound.
But it will not sound best in bedroom levels volume
Have you profiled the Beatles’ amps yet?
ElPicos & the Vox Hybrids they used?
I'm still watching because this video is hilarious. It's depressing too but dayum I'd rather watch gear videos than football games.
Of all the things you said the thing I will remember most is the red modern to your right;) good stuff man
Good thoughts on this stuff.
Wink Wink.
I'm addicted, I need a treatment group lol
😂 me too!!
Now i have your everything pack oh boy alot of nice tone just scratching the surface. One questions in the future do i still get new amps your profile.
I’ve recently become a Synth Addict, pray for me 🙏🏼
Oh no
After playing guitar for more than 45 years, tried everything at the end, is exactly what you said, is not what you need but you want, coz when like me (HX Stomp + Powercab 212 plus), I´m very happy and exploring into a world that I even knew existed. I´m 59 and everything is about what makes you feel good.

You’re right. I had my Kemper for 8 years. Saved a boatload of money over that period. But it’s just not the same in sound or feel and I sold it and am much more inspired.
I’m only interested in the modeling. I want the controls to behave similar to the real amp. I could care less about profiles or captures.
The real final boss will be when companies can figure out how to profile/simulate every knob position that an amp has within a profile.
@@WaveOfPig until they can do that modeling is still king imho I need the ability to tweak my tone real time not get a snapshot of someone elses ideal tone
So this is what an intervention feels like. I really appreciate your thoughts on this HW!
HW: "The best thing about Kemper is .... Myself"
J/k. I agree with your sentiment in this video!
Is there any software where I can just make my own amp, caps, and/or effects? I know it’s basic but iOS has tone bridge and love how simply it is.
I kind of miss 20 years ago when i had 2 guitars 1 amp and a wah...now i have a room full of gear and don’t know what to play. 🤦♂️😂😂. It’s an addiction! Because of UA-cam! I’m guilty
tube amp player for decades here. I love them. However, the progress in amp modeling and effects is so good now, it’s easy to get many good sounds with them. The convenience of one pedal does it all good is where I’m going..
A very honest statement, congrats! Now, lets play that damn guitar! :)
Great, now I'm aware that i have yet another "addiction"...
😂

I already knew about my obsession. :). Good message though.
Hi, I haven't been looking at gear since getting the Kemper. What came out that's ahead of the kemper ?
This video is the reason I invested in a Quad Cortex for studio use instead of buying plug ins. Thanks, HW!
My man just dropped some truth. This is me. This is your best video.
I was ready to be completely against everything you were about to say as I was listening to the disclaimer. However, you couldn’t of hit the point on the head any better. Well said indeed. Subscribed!
Why are people resistant to what he's saying? I thought this was obvious.
It's been a year, did you get rid of that Kemper?
Great video & good arguments. IMO the greatest feature of the Kemper is it's tonal abilities. Capturing a recorded tone like a miced tube amp tone. Giving you feel and tone like a tube amp when playing through a guitar cab. Yeah, you have to work for it. Yeah, it takes time. Just like playing tube amps and pedals. That's part of the fun, isn't it? Well, it used to be. I do not need a touch screen to play guitar. But I do understand that a digital generation has different needs. It's just that these won't change mine. Peace & out.
