First Barbie Doll with Down syndrome

- In partnership with the National Down Syndrome Society, the newest Barbie fashion doll was designed with purpose and inclusivity at the heart of every choice. With a shorter frame, rounder face, smaller features, and palms including a single line, this doll introduces a new sculpt and details illustrative of common characteristics of women with Down syndrome. Dressed in the colors and symbols of the community, she wears matching ankle foot orthotics, and a three-chevron necklace representing the three copies of the 21st chromosome. This results in the characteristics associated with Down syndrome - and represents “the lucky few” who have someone with Down syndrome in their life.

Simply awesome, I had tears in my eyes. Perhaps next we could have a "Ken" doll with Down Synodrome. 🥰
Fantastic, now that’s something I’m “down” for! Next time, I think it would be great to have more Barbies with Down syndrome with different ethnicities. Perhaps even some Ken dolls with Down syndrome too. Bravo, Mattel! 👏
Видеть счастливые глаза своего ребёнка - это наверно самое святое в жизни)))
I hope the people who were invited were given the doll. Perfect signal from the company!
When will there finally be a quadriplegic doll? My intellectually disabled epileptic and quadriplegic daughter cries out ‘Mattel is evil’ most every night from their lack of inclusiveness.
@@chrisreed3572 There are several dolls in wheelchairs, boys and girls. Your child could use their imagination for the rest. That is what toys like barbie are all about.

This is such a beautiful signal to everyone in the world and especially for the kids who suffer from down syndrome. Weither they're aware about it or not. I support this

I have a 4 year old granddaughter who has DS. To say they "suffer" is a poor statement. They do not suffer. In there eyes, they are no different than you and I. For instance, my granddaughter can do many things other children her age do. She may be a bit slower at catching on, but she accomplishes it eventually. And there are somethings she may never catch onto. She is not overly verbal. However, there is one thing she can do that many children in her age group cannot do, and that is sign language. Her momma has taught her. I'm still learning sign language, but i can do the basics with her to understand her needs. So Jason, please know i am not being rude about your statement, just making you aware. And I also am very excited about the new Barbie!! The majority of the DS society isn't going to recognize they have a DS Barbie, not because they can't, but because they don't see her as being any different than you or I. My granddaughter doesn't distinguish between her being DS and her brother isn't.
I love that!! Good job Mattel!
The children whit Down, will want to play with normal Barbies jajajaj
I thought this was a SNL skit 😂
I am just amazed, Mattel. I cannot put into words how much this means to me and my family. We have a beautiful, sweet, smart 3-year-old girl with DS. For my family to be in the era of this first Barbie with Down Syndrome readily available for any little girl to have is remarkable. I am so proud of my little one and now to have a Barbie that looks just like her is very humbling and is a reminder that even with all the hate and hardship in the world, there are movements and changes happening for the greater good. Hats off to all involved in bringing this Barbie to market! Thank you!
So cool, at last!!❤️👍
🥰🥰
This Barbie look like hot Russian women not like the person with Down syndrome LOL
Mattel. You should do down syndrome power rangers also. Like a super strength power ranger. Keep up the great work.
A cousin of mine has down syndrome and this touches my heart.
Nice one,mattel 👏👏👏
Where is the black one
Yeah, that part. If they come out with various ethnic groups, they will probably have the more common look of a person with Downs Syndrome not this fashion looking replica of the mold they have used on so many others. Spreading the eyes out slightly made no real difference and DS is almost unnoticeable. But yeah Mattel...rake in that money and call it inclusive. I see you.
if they had to make a black and white version of every single barbie and existence, i feel like thatd get really complicated really fast with all the billions of different possible combinations lol,
Thank you. God bless you ❤
When is this awesome doll going to be released? June or July? I bought the Kelly doll with a sclouisis back brace, and my next doll I'm going to be getting is this beautiful doll that looked like a lot of my friends in school

See! The DS-phobia must end! They are among the most physically attractive people I’ve seen. Down’s syndrome is something to be celebrated and spoken of without fear or intimidation from MAGA trolls!
Epileptics are similarly shamed and shunned from society. When will Mattel finally make a non-binary epileptic doll that can go into a full seizure like my 6 year old daughter? She would be very grateful and inspired to see a doll she can actually relate with.

I am not sorry to burst this bubble, but this is bull. A big toy company does not and will not ever care about people and diversity. In the end it is all about the money, nothing more nothing less than that. These days company's use the terms diversity and inclusively to lure and make people believe that they care, but the that is not the case. It is just a ploy to make a buck.
possibly, but that doesnt change the fact that its nice that inclusive dolls exist
I would love to see all the new dolls in a new barbie series ❤️
Same that would be cool she will definitely be in my barbecue doll series once I make it
I like it. They're trying to include more people
But what about Ken with down syndrome?
Good point but why not a Ken doll with epilepsy? Down’s syndrome is something to be celebrated and spoken of without fear or intimidation from MAGA trolls!

Wow, that is just great! Can't wait to purchase one for my girl with DS. I hope there will be shipments to Russia.
That would be great if they sold them in Russia there needs to be more of a awareness of disability there. I would like that, too.👍🥰
My brother has a mental disability and because of him I meet a lot of people with Down syndrome. I'll tell you one thing: none of them will care one bit about this. This is just virtue signaling to please some Karens on Twitter.

totally agree 👍🏻
I do agree in some ways but on the other hand I have seen quite a bit about kids being excited to see themselves represented. For instance the doll with vitiligo or the one with the prosthetic leg.
@@jessicachernak8699 Sadly, this doll missed the DS mark. It does not represent my granddaughter or most other children with DS. Make her with moth open and tongue showing. Make her heavy-set. Make her eyes to represent DS not some made up beauty pagent doll. Nope..not even a good try
@@vegascece One of the designers of the doll was a girl with down syndrome and a spokesperson for NDSS. She has a necklace that symbolizes the 23 chromosomes, almond eyes, flatter nose, a single crease in her palm, shorter in stature, curvy (what you called heavy set) body type and ankle orthotics. Previously there was just one barbie and they are now making barbies in hundreds of different molds with all different weights, heights, skin colors, eye colors, hair colors, hair textures, bald dolls, dolls with vitiligo, freckles, prosthetics, in wheel chairs, with down syndrome etc etc but still not happy. You can't win..... They are not inclusive, they are not inclusive enough, which is it.. I mean no doll will look exactly like your kid unless you wanted to pay an artist to make you a one of a kind doll which would cost hundreds to make your kid its own mini me.
@@jessicachernak8699 My "kid" was my Granddaughter who had Trismoy 21 and has since passed away. I understand the likeness of those with other DS chromosome defects may appear differently so my comments are directed at the most common of the DS babies. Further up in the comments, someone also stated, "if they hadn't told us, we wouldn't even see the difference" (paraphrasing). When passerby's see a child, it's not the children that have almost, or not easily recognized facial differences that draws their attention. It's always the child with the very wide spread eyes, open mouth with tongue exposed (drooling), etc. that causes them to stare. Barbie has truly undergone a change over the year's. The dolls with easily recognizable disabilities (wheelchairs, vitiligo, etc.) is a great start and no, they can't possibly make a doll to capture each and every difference but IMO, this DS Barbie totally misses the mark on bringing recognition to the most common form of Downs.

I would only hope they would include a Barbie of multi races/nationalities in order for children to really connect. I'm also not sold on the DS "look". Good try but not quite. RIP to my grand baby born with DS.
00:30 imo that's isnt really a good representation of a downer,, This has not the characteristics that Down Syndrome has

Why don’t you make that request with Mattel?
Until you do let’s give these children their flowers 💐
But they portrait shorter woman with eastern look and call her Barbie with Down syndrome -.-
I really like Barbie, my favorite Mattel doll. She never let me down and I'm sure many others can learn from her and have fun together I have one on my desk that makes my room a little happier.
A barbie doll with down syndrome I like that I hope they can make a barbie doll that represents autism like dr. Temple grandin the farm animal scientist and autism rights activist.
How nice that the barbie company launches the barbie with Down syndrome (sorry if I wrote something wrong, I'm not a gringa, I'm Latina, but I'm learning English😁)
it is just to get more sales, not to be inclusive, thinking in sell more being inclusive is not being inclusive. the pure concept of barbie is wrong and sick for the past and actual kids.
Bruh you got it all wrong
that's silly they realistically won't sell many of these dolls as the target audience is considerably smaller than others and it is unlikely that many of them will be sold to non DS kids. The costs probably far outweigh the profits given the research and development, the art and production, marketing etc etc.

You are really wrong
@@luvshine19 What you you mean I'm wrong? 😡😡😡❌❌❌
@@howardlee2447 boys could definitely use Barbies, my brother used to use my barbies
I'm waiting for Mattel to have the balls to come out with a doll that has a face that represents the AVERAGE woman. Even the new DS doll has a face that fits the Golden Ratio template. ALL Barbie faces still fit the same template including full lips, big doe eyes and enough space in between each eye to fit a third eye with some spare room. These are classic features of beauty, not to mention the thick lush hair. So on some level, this new addition is a crock, because Mattel continues to create Barbies with UNREALISTICALLY GORGEOUS FACES. Does not this drill into little girls that there's a very high beauty standard for FACES, regardless of skin color or slight alterations to resemble DS? In fact, the DS features on this doll aren't even noticeable unless it's pointed out. Let's admit it: This doll hardly looks like any of the DS young women we've all ever seen in the course of our lives. Mattel is so afraid to cross that boundary and come out with a doll with an A V E R A G E face.
would you kindly stop being so negative about a literal doll brand that is making more and more inclusive and varying dolls every year? if you want a doll without that golden ratio, then hey, how about... go design it yourself. go ahead! whats stopping you?
@@Hunlover123601 exactly !!!
@@Hunlover123601 What's stopping me is lack of knowledge about how to get a line of dolls manufactured; the cost to get all of this started; the marketing skills to get it out there; etc. I'm not a marketing expert. I have skills in other areas, but figuring out how to get a doll that I designed to appear in all the Walmarts and on Amazon is not one of them. Now, if I could click my fingers and make a doll with Sara Gilbert's face appear on store shelves, I'd do so. It's ridiculous when people say, "If you want (fill in the blank), then design it yourself." I don't know the first thing about how a doll is even made, whom I'd contact about this, let alone the money to invest in it. And then there's the time that would be required. I'm already busy enough. However, being that UA-cam allows comments, I AM entitled to post my perspective -- which takes only a few minutes out of my day.
@@AntiWoke_Autistic A. You could always make a sketch. That's where it usually starts. Then submit it to Barbie, with your story.
Other than that, you seem pretty woke to me! Don't go with the sheeple flow, but dare to be yourself and stand out!
Totally agree. DS children/adults generally carry more weight so a fashion model figure doll is a "no" for me. They also don't carry that perfect smile with thin lips and perfect smiles. Her eyes are the biggest "wrong" for me as well. I'm very surprised the DS folks supported this. RIP to my little DS angel grand baby.

#epilepticDad
#supportforepilepticparents
No they're not? How would they represent that? You could make a barbie with all purple clothing and purple ribbons to symbolize epilepsy awareness, but other than that the options are limited without making it blatantly offensive. Do you want the doll to have some sort of seizure button where it falls down and locks up for a minute? That would be in really poor taste. And don't even bother telling me that I don't know what I'm talking about as I too have epilepsy. I have the feeling you're just being a troll on the internet for attention.
