Just quick personal impressions now that I have the van der Harst pick. Sorry the sound isn’t super distinct between the picks... cell phone mics are limited, especially when right next to a tabletop.

Hi Phil, that's a nice review/comparison. Also that we Dutch come out quite well. Thank you.
Imho the sound of the mando is a mix of instrument, player, and the pick as intermediate. Which means you always have to find out by trial&error which is the best pick for you mando (not always one of mine...). And then it probably evenb differs for the style you want to play. I once saw Chris Thile play the Chaconne on his Loar with the Bluechip pick. Too bright. I gave him some picks but don't know if he uses them...

Absolutely, the pick must be matched with the instrument and player! I’ve gone back to your pick a few times when I’m playing very calm music or want extremely low pick noise. Especially now with my new mandolin, which intrinsically has a very dark sound, it brings out a very pure tone that I enjoy experimenting with.

Yep I thought that is a Flatiron Festival F. I have a 2001 given to me as a warranty replacement for a Flatiron 84 pancake Mandola, the top caved in and Gibson destroyed it trying to fix it. Pretty good up grade. You and yours sound awesome.

Thanks! The Festival is a great axe, but I’ve gotta say my new mando spoiled me fast!

I picked up a 2016 Red Diamond Vintage24. I got to go to a couple of the big stores in Nashville and play Gilchrists and Monteleones and Gibsons and a Dudenbostel and a whole bunch of others, but this one voicing in the RD line is something awesome I didn’t hear anywhere else.

I think the blame of the tonal differences probably lies more because the different picks are changing your attack angles ... because of the different way tou are forced to hold each pick .. you dont notice it but it does it to everyone...
One that will be clickety for you may not necessarily make that same clicking for someone with a more steeper angle of attack..
You don't notice, but that different roundness of each one can make you hold it slightly different .. and if you slightly change your angle you can hear that clack soften and in some extremes go away completely..

The pick furthest left (D'Addario?) sounds best, hands down. It makes the purest contact with the string with fewest overtones. Everything else is purely player skill level coming in to affect the sound.

I've finally settled on a Wegen Big City Jazz 1.8 on my Eastman, the $1k one. Really minimal pick noise and very sweet/transparent/nimble and plenty of volume

    It’s pronounced DAD-AR-EE-OH not DEE-AD-AR-EE-OH
