As someone who purchased an Epiphone a style for $70 I totally agree that the best mandolin you can get is the one that lets you play mandolin the most

I've played guitar for many years and have enjoyed the tone of the mandolin. To my ear I found the F style to be more of a mellow sound with slightly more sustain. The A style seems brighter, especially in the higher notes.
Looking forward to your contest information and beginning lessons since I finally just subscribed.

Learning to play the mandolin was something I wanted to do as a kid. I'm now 24 and the inspiration came back to me when I started to listen to Nickel Creek. A few months ago I came across your video of the best mandolin for beginners. Since then, I've been wanting to purchase that Loar Honey Creek in the F style but never had the extra hundred dollars for it.

I love your videos, and I love the way you are clear and up front about how the compensation works - which I think is fair, and shouldn’t be a detractor - complainers about that reality are something I won’t say, because I’m not trying to make enemies or attack, but your model is as fair and reasonable as any I can imagine. I came to this site for that very comparison (as a check to myself; I already have an Ellis F5 and other nice mandolins); and because I know you are fair. I love that you encourage people to get an F style if it’s what they want, even though it’s not your style. It’s silly to pretend that aesthetics are an inappropriate criteria for instrument choice, and it’s wonderful that you articulate why it’s advantageous to go a different route, but don’t insist that aesthetics are a bad criteria. I’m grateful for your content and contribution! Your videos are top notch!

I wanted to get that very same A style, but they weren't in stock. One day, I went to the local Guitar Center, saw a used 310, played a couple of tunes, and I wanted it. It was priced at $299.00, and I found out that I could trade it in. It turned out that there was a waiting period for the used one, but a new one was in stock. With the trade-in, and 10% discount on trades, it was only a $30.00 difference. I'm satisfied....

Another thing to keep in mind (for me) is that I feel if you were to do that test with some higher-end mandolins, such as even Eastmans (which have their naming system code: MD XYZ, where X is the series; Y is 0 for an A-style and 1 for an F-style; and Z is 4 for an oval hole and 5 for an f-hole) and you compare the same series A vs. F (for example, even with the starter series MD 305 vs. MD 315), you are more likely to notice a tonal difference.

Check out their guitars, too. I really like the 529 - it's a carved archtop with a P-90 - strung over a bridge to pull on the tailpiece and press on the sound board like a violin or mandolin - this makes for an incredibly efficient way to produce loud, cutting tone with surprisingly low string tensions and stable tuning.

I had a moment of terrible timing a couple of years back. I’d sold my mando due to arthritis and thinking I couldn’t play. Immediately (2 days later) I got a call asking if I could play an event. So I raced out and bought a new mando. I got an A style. I’d always used either A style or bowl back so it was my go to. There was an issue with that particular instrument so I took it back. They didn’t have another of that one in an A and I ended up, reluctantly, leaving with an f style. I doubt I will ever go back! It may be this particular mando or maybe I just love the look and feel of it, but I do believe in general they sound a bit richer in tone. Just my opinion. But A styles have a gorgeous simplicity to them as well..

Great video, thanks. My first mandolin was an A-style, and I ended up never playing it and sold it without really getting into the mandolin. When I re-started again, I'd kind of decided that it was the shape that made a difference, so I started with an F, and that kind of stuck, but the more I played, and after getting an A for backup and camps/travel, I gradually realized I was picking up the A more than the F! I don't know why, but, the short story is I now have 2 As, and one is an Ellis! (This channel may bear some responsibility! ;))

  • @Road_Rash

I'm learning to build mandolins, & after studying their construction, all the extra body parts on an F are just there for looks, they're all filled with solid chunks of wood, the resonation chamber (the hollow part), is shaped exactly the same, so they sound pretty much the same... people like the fancier looking F bodies more because they're more pleasing to the eye, so they tend to think they sound better, even though they sound pretty much the same...mandos from different manufacturers sound different because of the materials & build quality, but there's not much, if any, difference in the sound of F vs A... unless you have one of each from a different manufacturer...or a higher end model vs a lower end model, you may hear a difference then, but same manufacturer, same quality level, there won't be much, if any, difference...

    • @Mandolin_Matt
      @Mandolin_Matt 10 місяців тому +1

There is certainly a slight tonal difference I would say. However, there is a significant aesthetic difference, which I think is extremely important. There is a whole lot to be said for having the instrument you want and that inspires you. Personally, if I were to buy an A style, every time I’d look at it or pick it up to play I would wish I had an F style. That’s worth a few hundred dollars more in my opinion, and it would probably have a positive impact on my commitment to playing.

I agree with your statement that "if the beauty of the F-style makes you want to play more often, then go for it!" I might add a second consideration: I find the A-style harder to keep on my lap in position because of the body shape. At least with the points of the F-style, it is better anchored.

Great comparison. One thing you didn't mention about these two instruments is that the bodies are made of the same wood, also. So same construction other than the style. Also, as I understand it, the higher cost of the F-style is partly due to the extra work to build them.

Hey, if it helps I’d urge you to save just a little more and get an Eastman MD315. I bought the f-style Loar and had a bad experience. Very plastic appearance due to the laminate back/sides/neck/headstock and the sound was very poor. Next to no volume on the higher strings and a harsh sound overall - again, the laminate wood is a serious hindrance. I replaced it quite quickly with the Eastman and they’re like night and day - the Eastman is worth every extra penny and will last you much longer.

@@Mandolin_Matt - Hey Matt, I really appreciate you taking the time to talk about your experience with your Loar and give some solid criticism and a warning. I'm not sure why I didn't get a notification that you commented to me, but this video came back in my feed for some reason and I noticed you replied... so here I am replying back... finally. I've moved on from the idea of getting this lower end Loar. The next model up (LM590) is solid carved top, back, and sides, and is something of a step up so I'm considering that model now. Trust me, I've been wanting an MD315 for several years now, but I also want something that's electric as well. I know the MD315 now comes in an electric version, but I live in Canada and the cheapest I've seen it is $1528.44 CAD. That's before shipping, taxes, and duty/import fees. So after that's all done I'd imagine it's going to be up around $1750.00 or so. That's just insane for a 'good' beginner mandolin, and I simply can't justify that amount of money right now, even if I could find somewhere that offered a payment plan. 🙁 I could grab the Loar lm590 electric/acoustic for $450.00 cheaper before shipping/import/tax/duties.
I'm still very much on the fence because even that's a large chunk of change for an instrument I'll mostly be playing by myself, and maybe the odd time around a campfire. Nothing has come down in price since the Covid hike price scam that every company in the world seems to have taken advantage of. Super frustrating. *raises fist to sky and shakes it defiantly*

A great comparison and I listened a second time but closed my eyes and could pick out the slightly softer tone of the F. But I didn't always get it right. You probably won't know the model I have (it's an Artist. Cost me £60 sterling, and I fitted an e-pickup system to it). The F looks great and I'd say that's it's only plus. To my untrained ear, the difference in sound is almost undetectable. I'm planning on building a Mandolin so my first one will be an A type simply because I won't have to deal with the fancy shape of the F style.
Excellent comparison. Thank you very much.👍👍

    I have surprised myself !
I guess I always just had it in my head, that an " F " would sound better ?
But what I heard here, was for me, the " A " sounded all around better !
First thing I heard with the " F ", was it's sound was a bit flat, for lack of a better term.
The " A " just sounded more uniform to my ear.
It seemed to modulate all the various Frequencies better !
Now I'll finish watching the video !

I'm lucky enough to have one of each, a Kentucky 150 A style and A Loar 600 F style. The Kentucky was bought new about 3 years ago and the The Loar was bought second hand earlier this year. The Kentucky is a bit "brighter" maybe while The Loar is perhaps "warmer" and maybe "smoother". F style seems to be a bit rarer here in the UK. I like them both, if I could justify a dream, that is expensive Mando, I think I'd go for an A style because you get more bang for your buck.

Thanks a lot for this very interesting video! As far as I’m concerned, I definitely prefer the A style, for the look and the sound. The F style sound is more clear and "sophisticated" and is really appropriate for bluegrass music. The A style sound is more "rough" and is perfect for Irish music. And my style is much more Irish jigs than bluegrass music!

More harmonic content and perceived midrange depth in that F compared to that A. Fuller sound, may be harder to tame with an EQ in a mix. But it's tough to try to arrange a piece where the mandolin doesn't do its job of being heard.

@@lfish21.... Thanks for your reply. Ahhhh, silly me. The way it was worded, was kind of "open ended" and could be taken either way.... apparently I took a left, when I should have taken a right, when I got to the "Y" in the road.
So, how are you enjoying and coming along with your new Mandolin?
I just got my first Mandolin about a month ago, after I did some luthier work on a lady friends Rogue RB100 mandolin that she pick up in a garage sale for a whole $2.00!! The nut was broken in half and missing on the Treble side, so I made a new one from scratch, out of some high grade, industrial Delrin stock that I have, and made a new bridge, top half for it as well, out of some grade "A" solid Pine wood, as the top section of the original was cracked.
After that, I restrung it with Martin, Monel wound bass and monel wire treble strings, as she said she did Not want it sounding Too "twangy", so between the new nut material, the bridge and the new Monel strings, it's not too "twangy", but has a very nice "warmth" to the tone, without the bass side not sounding "muddy" and has decent sustain to it, when needed.
All that, to say... I had to try it out after all the work I did on it (I play Bass & Steel guitar)... and decided that I needed to get one for myself, to learn on.... but did Not want That Cheap of an "entry" model... so I bought an "F" type Loar (310 series). I wanted an "A", but they were out of stock, so I got the "F".
Actually, I really like the "F", now that I've had it for a bit, as I generally am sitting down when I'm practicing / learning, and I find that the little "kick out"/pointy piece on the lower right (as I'm facing the mandolin) curve, is perfect for stabilizing the mandolin while in a sitting position, as that body shape, fits into my inner thigh, and keeps it from trying to move around while playing.... something that I had an issue with, with our friends Rogue "A" style when I tried it.
Unless I more or less "hugged" it close, it wanted to slide around a bit too much for my liking, whereas this Loar "F" style just stays put, without having to consciously keep it close to me. I think my next one will be a Kentucky 150, or "higher". Ooops!, sorry for the book!... anyway, thanks again for your reply and setting me straight.👍🎸
PS: I drove 75 miles, to pick mine up... but it worked out perfect, as I was headed just 7 miles from their store, on the same day it was ready.
It was all set up when I picked it up, they set the action on it, nice and close with no fret buzz, put a set of D'Addario EFW74 (.011 - .036 flat wounds, at my request) on it and gave me the original set (came with D'Addario round wounds), all nicely repackaged. They set the intonation on it, and is perfect.
I picked up a Really Nice / densely padded "soft" case for it, which they took $30. off of, after he asked me if I was a veteran (VN - 3 tours), and said that was his way of saying "thanks for your service" in a viable way.... for which I was & am, Very grateful and Thanful.
I Will be buying my next mandolin or anything else I need in that line, from them.
They only sell Mandolins, Fiddles, Acoustic Guitars, Banjo's and Dobro's.... they definitely cater to Bluegrass (primarily), country and western swing music and players thereof.
The Loar "A" and "F" models in the $300. - $400. range, are the least expensive "Beginner" models that they carry and will sell to "Beginners", because they believe that "newbie's" will more likely "stay with it", if they have a really decent quality Mando, to start out with, instead of some of the real "el-cheapo's" that are out there, with all kinds of quality control issues and cheap components.
The owner and his staff are All, Very talented & gifted players in Bluegrass & Country music styles, a few of them even have multiple CD's out.
Thanks again, have a great day and enjoy your mandolin.... do you play any other instruments, or learning on?

They both sound like mandolins. The A has a bit more midrange bite. That could just be the specific instruments though.
FWIW, if you're recording /anything/ that doesn't have bass frequencies (i.e., most sources) then definitely set the switch to roll off the bass, because it will only add mud if you don't.

"The F is cleaner, definitely has a more bluegrass sounds If that makes sense."
Thank you for expressing what my untrained ear heard but could not describe. I began mandolin lessons last month, so I would have described the F sound as more of a twang (yes, I have yet to develop the vernacular of musicians) that one would hear in country music. Bluegrass describes it perfectly.
I recall the sound of those who gathered round the town square in Mountain View, Arkansas playing bluegrass with banjos and instruments of that ilk.
