It's amazing how musical the first 10 sound. The 2nd 10 show that jazz is very much a rhythmic language. I imagine what happens when you practice, you end up hitting some wrong notes that end up sounding pretty cool, as long as the rhythm is still in the pocket.
Well if that’s not worth a subscription nothing is! This is the essence of great teaching, a seemingly simple idea but with a lifetime of practice possibilities if followed. Thanks Dave.
Thank you so much!!
This is fantastic. Thanks so much Dave!
You're welcome!
Another fantastic video that can really help my students! Thanks as usual for the amazing and well explained content!
You're very welcome!
I like how you can see which licks you like in this video like #76 is my favorite and I’ll learn it
Thanks for the effort of making and sharing this video. I notice that you resolve all the phrases to the 3rd or 5th of the maj7 chord. Was this a deliberate choice to make that particular sound or is there a reason you chose not to resolve to the root of the maj7 chord? Thanks again
Yes it was intentional - the 3rd and 5th are the 2 strongest resolution notes on a maj7 chord, so I wanted to keep it simple and locked in. Also, resolving to the root isn't *wrong* but it really doesn't sound that great - vanilla, boring, and everyone else in the band (rhythm section) is playing it. No color!
Thanks that makes perfect sense
Thanks a Lot!!!!❤
You’re welcome!
Very cool 😎 Thank you so much ! Very helpful, even for a bass player like me
Awesome! Yep this is not instrument-specific at all!
Go Phillies…Thanks🎼🎶🎵🎷
❤❤ thank you
You’re welcome!
How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop?
40
I bet Devlin could do it in 3.
its an amazing exercise very good thank you
You're welcome!
Remember to tell them, the music we see in the video is Concert pitch. I wish you were showing alto sax part as you played. This video is really helpful to play on Flute.
I said it was concert right in the beginning. Thousands of people watch my channel are NOT saxophonists, so I always use concert key.
Wow, this is one of the most fantastic lessons I've ever learned from UA-cam. I used to hear some jazz musicians doing this but I had no clue how they did it. Man, you are an institution! Thanks, Dave.
I really appreciate that! 🙏
hahaha Nick Mannella just did "One Lick Into 8." Next week Adam Neely will do a "mathematical limit for creating unique licks from one base lick and the computer algorithm that destroyed licks." Isn't Jazz wild?

Thanks! Glad you like it
This is pretty good. I’m trying to play piano ( beginner/intermediate) and can see that is something that I can use.
