I love the way you talk to your viewers. At no second I feel like you're showing off or feel superior. It feels like you're sharing info with a friend. Calm, very informative and professional. Thanks for that quality content!
This is exactly what I need to have watched! UA-cam recommended algorithm send me to this video is on point. I have photographed my perfume bottle practicing to edit the photos into advertising for self. This saved me from searching. Awesome tutorial
Great video with a lot of mystery taken out of the processes as well as a lot of the excessive actions which I’m sure a lot of UA-camrs put in to make the process look much more difficult. Also great examples of using a flag and the impact they have. I think your editing of the bevel was certainly allowable, you didn’t remove it as such but made it look cleaner and tidier. I’m glad I’m not the only person who uses creased diffusers as my background.
Huge fan of your work man. You shoot with 18mm in this tutorial? I was always under the impression you should shoot tight? Could you explain when it is better to shoot tight or wide?
Shooting a tight crop is ideal to maximize the resolution of the prodct area, though here I moved my camera close as possible to maximize the heroic distortion. So typically, yes shooting tight is ideal! It's just zooming out to 18mm creates the closest-possible distance where I can still focus.
Great work and demonstration. I've been doing photography for year, but I never let my ego get in the way of learning new things. You have given me quite a few new ideas and you have gained a subscriber out of me. Much thanks!
Nice tutorial Dustin. A way to speed up your masking edit on the additional lighting layers is to switch them to Lighten mode. Only the areas lighter than the underlying layer are revealed. You may not even need to do any masking. I use this on loads of different subjects (even houses). I think I'll be buying some lipstick this week..
Thank-you! Since I only had a crisp dark edge on the side of the comp I was lighting -- lighten mode resulted in a lot of strange artifacts from the overexposed edges. I decided to just bite the bullet and do a true Normal mask mode. That's awesome you use this with houses, I love lighten blending mode with a true passion Cheers!
Awesome expected post you shared here, I will require it many times, and here the outstanding selection of topic also makes me more jolly, please hope more blog post we get from you. Thanks advances!!!
Great tutorial and refreshingly cliché-free delivery. No "lets just jump in and do that...." or "I'm just going to go ahead and .....". A breath of fresh air. Thanks.
These tutorials are fantastic. Thank you! I looked through your gear guide but couldn't find the "table top" thingy you attach to your lightstand to place your products on. I'd love to get that item, can you share? Thanks!
Thank you for sharing!! I have a question since the pictures will be to sell the product the colors need to be as we see them in real life.. so do you use any picture profile in your camera? Im a canon user.
I don't use a specific picture profile, just the neutral settings as some of those settings are directly editable assuming you're shooting RAW I believe - but I often align colours to the exact hue a brand needs. Often with a layer in photoshop. Cheers
Fantastic video Dustin! I am a beginner so it helps a lot! But can you pls do a detailed video on the various steps you mentioned here in editing a cosmetic product? Would like to see in runtime how you edited it, it would help a lot for beginners! Thank you!
Such a wonderful tutorial. I love the way you explain everything and break it all down. One thing I'm often finding is my images aren't really pin sharp. I use a tripod, remote, lockup mirror, timer with remote so no shake, my lenses are calibrated. I'm just at a loss. I'm on a canon 5d mark iii and its with all lenses even after calibration. Any advice?
hi there! i loved all your vid tutorials and thanks for sharing it with us. i have a question if you don’t mind to answer since you are sharing us your expertise in product photography. i’m a newbie to product photography. could you help me decide what are the essential equipments that I should prepare for shooting various products? lighting equipments and peripherals. I will be working on an e-commerce company, I need to mastered the pure white background. thanks and godspeed👌
James -- may I ask if you were behind this video getting featured on PetaPixel? I'd love for you to check out my latest video on Speedlight Wine Photography: ua-cam.com/video/jk1UsYRmsoQ/v-deo.html
I wasn't. I'm not sure how it got featured actually, but it's great that it did. Go ahead and submit the new one via the "Got a Tip?" link at PetaPixel.com for consideration.
Awesome video! I can't wait to try this out myself, I think I might even have that lipstick (used of course) haha but I'm definately going to give this a shot!
While I'm aware that wide angle lenses are commonly used for macro shoots, I'd still very much like to see a comparison between using an 18mm and a standard 100mm macro. Since you are heavily cropping the image, I suspect the main difference is you get a longer reflection with the wide angle. But using a macro lens with better optics will probably get rid of much of the chromatic abberation straight out of camera so you don't have to deal with it in post.
Good points! I shot this with the kit lens. A nice macro would be fantastic -- I'd like to see the comparison. Make sure to check my upcoming wine photography lesson for a similiar discussion. Cheers!
Hey there, my Yongnuo 560TX transmitter is plugged into hotshoe. Whenever I take a picture remote or otherwise, it automatically transmits the flashes to fire. Best of luck!
Oh, so some trigger has that ability. Sorry I'm a total beginner in this. My godox flashes just can't do what you said with trigger reemix RMII that I had. Btw, great tutorials you're making out there! Just 1 think, can you sometime do a little bit of medium or large size product setup? That would be great! Thank you.
I watched this video a year ago and I though wow. I Can’t do this. A year later I have gotten enough skill and equipment to give this a go. Thanks for the tutorial brah
Hi Dustin, I never saw such a high level of product photography. And also editing. I strive to approach to your level but I can't on this stage. Here is the issue. It's difficult to follow you as english is not my main language and my Photoshop skills are much lower then yours. So when you do something obvious for you in Photoshop -- you do it fast as it doesn't seem worth attention for you. It's such a bummer I cant follow you in layers, masks, etc. Could you make just one video where you explain everything like you explain it for a very slow person? Just for guys like me to get the main principle of your work. On how you put one frame as a layer over the previous layer and masks and how it's mixed up together... It would be awesome!!! We sell in the I-net platforms on hight key and I do photos myself. The product is thread ladies' handbags, backpacks and stuff like that. Not the best objects for shooting as you can't see any glossiness on it like on the plastic or leather mathirial. So I need to make it on white background with it's reflection on plexi. Without reflection it doesn't look as beautiful as in real life. Wheather you gonna make such "slow" video or not I still admire your work, wish you best luck and having orders from the best brands! Regards, Alex
Hi Dustin, I take shots on pure white with my camera's highlight warning turned on. When I shoot, the background is pure white/blown out, but when I put the same image in LR or PS 2018 CC, the bg isn't white, if I turn up the whites, the products' color is effected. Have to use selection/pen tool to separate my product from the bg and pull the whites up all the way. I've recently turned to catalog white product photography but have general photography experience of 6 years almost. Now I have 500-700 products to shoot and this is really hindering my workphlo. Any tips please?
Great tutorial... However, don't you think it would be easier (speaking about "tweaking" the lighting) to shoot with studio flash that incorporates a modeling light?
I vote that you should've strengthened the reflection of the little bevel so it contoured more smoothly and intentionally around the lipstick rather than made it disappear completely
Damn it, as a compositor, I've never used these techniques for photos, wich is my hobby, only for 3D. Silly me. Also, didn't know Ryan Gosling is a photographer. ;)
Is 18mm really ideal? You’re cropping 80% of the pixels out and losing all that information. I’ve never seen cosmetics images shot with such a wide angle lens.. I usually use a 100 macro really in close, or a 50mm macro if I want wider. But 18? I dunno.
Nice bare bones approach - showing that you don't NEED a lot to get good results. This type of approach would be nice if you're shooting one item. But, if you're doing product photography like this, you're more than likely going to be doing multiple items, at least if you're getting paid by a client for it. The cost/time would not be beneficial for anyone (client or photographer) involved. Just some thoughts for those wanting to approach product photography.

So typically, yes shooting tight is ideal! It's just zooming out to 18mm creates the closest-possible distance where I can still focus.
So that's how product shots get those nice short shadows that fade away! I'd been wondering that for ages 👌👌

Are you too close to the subject, and you're within the 'minimum focusing distance'? This is all I can think of.
Thanks for doing this! No overcomplicated explanations, you make it look simple, and I know it is not.

Can you show me how you can fire the flash & camera at the same time remotely? Because my trigger can only do 1 thing at a time (camera or flash)

Wow that was just great. I didn't expect that :o
Thanks, it's appreciated! More videos coming soon.
How do you apply that crop? I don't understand that at all, thanks
Just a regular crop!
What camera and lens do u use?
D7000 kit lens
Well done!
Thanks Peter, I appreciate you watching!
Hi Dustin, I take shots on pure white with my camera's highlight warning turned on. When I shoot, the background is pure white/blown out, but when I put the same image in LR or PS 2018 CC, the bg isn't white, if I turn up the whites, the products' color is effected. Great workphlo* ;-)
Great job! Appreciate it man, keep it up please!
Simple work but effective.
Yes, thanks
Would you mind share how do you attach a Plexiglas on the light stand?
Check our Martini Splash video, we briefly show the attachment
What camera do you shoot with?
Thanks!
It's on the end screen! D5100 ;)
i dont even have a camera and i enjoy this !! well done
emadshk Haha luv it. thx
Great tutorial... However, don't you think it would be easier (speaking about "tweaking" the lighting) to shoot with studio flash that incorporates a modeling light?
Richard Crowe I agree it would be desirable! Im holdin it down out here for all the speedlight users, stay tuned for more! 🍁
Regarding the video at 08:30 , I would have left the bevel in as it’s still present on either side and would look more complete with it left there.
After looking back at this, I think I agree with you. Was quite a while ago (-:
Thanks for the video!
You're welcome!
Very Nice!
Do you always use 18mm on small products?
No, just here for an extra punch. Sacrificed quite a bit of resolution so in hindsight I may have adjusted this approach.
Outstanding info! Thanks :-)
Great end result and loved the video. When's the next one due, I am having withdrawal symptoms :)
Thanks Chris! New stuff uploaded starting tomorrow (-:
Awesome, looking forward to it :)
Hi brother. Would you please share your opinion regarding Autoretouch, an AI tool to automate the image editing process!
No opinion so far!
Cool tut thanks
Thank you!!!!!!
You're welcome!
Great, I`m not a fan of Product Photography, I shoot Wedding and Portrait, but this video is Great, I love it, well done!
Keep doing a great work!
Cheers! I love wedding photography, it seems really challenging and I have a lot of respect of you people! ✌️
I wish you would have let us see a comparison of the original photo to the edited photo
Free Byrd Great point! Thanks will do that next time.
workphlo that would be awesome!
Free Byrd cheers! 📸
Please make one video on jewlery photography.....
Try macro rings (or distance rings as some may call them) and you will get even closer with 18mm
nice video, thank you :)
Duphe Not a problem. (-:
I vote that you should've strengthened the reflection of the little bevel so it contoured more smoothly and intentionally around the lipstick rather than made it disappear completely
Really appreciate your suggestions, thanks and take care!
Thanks so much !!
No prob!
Dustin Can you go through this every step, step by step
Sunni I am uploading a more thorough tutorial soon!
I really wish you could take time and tutor ok how to composite....this was good, but I felt informed and not educated to be able to do it by myself
Ok, fair enough! Stay tuned I will help that
Damn it, as a compositor, I've never used these techniques for photos, wich is my hobby, only for 3D. Silly me. Also, didn't know Ryan Gosling is a photographer. ;)
feelthefears I thought I looked more like the guy from Moonlight, but thanks stranger!!
Is 18mm really ideal? You’re cropping 80% of the pixels out and losing all that information. I’ve never seen cosmetics images shot with such a wide angle lens.. I usually use a 100 macro really in close, or a 50mm macro if I want wider. But 18? I dunno.
Fair points

Could anyone tell me how actually he is taking those photos. Hes not even clicking anything.
A wireless remote, and a button on the computer at times!
Hey Dustin. You really seem to enjoy photography. When you are old enough you should open your own studio.
Do you know how companies get lipstick smears? its mind boggling lol

Good comment Steve, definitely just a heroic edit here -- see our most recent video for a catalog-friendly approach.
