10 years a professional brewer here, getting my chops in on the social media side. I've found this video to be by far the single most helpful for shooting beer release posts. As someone who has specialized in wood-ageing beers for the entireity of my career, I just want to say it's not an enzyme in wood that causes the beer bubbles! It's the pores in the chopsticks causing "nucleation" sites that allow the CO2 to break out of solution. That's why salt works, too! The jagged little crystals of salt give the CO2 surfaces on which to form bubbles. For that reason, the efficacy of a chopstick will be reduced as the chopstick becomes saturated. For both salt and chopsticks the efficacy will be reduced as the amount of dissolved CO2 remaining in the beer decreases. Some glasses actually have etchings to create nucleation sites on the inside of the bottom of the glass to produce a steady stream of bubbles that replenish the head. Nucleation is also to blame for the bubbles on the side of the glass; if a glass is "beer clean" alllll of the bubbles will rise to the top. Anyone who has ever microwaved a glass of water to the point that it's superheated and then stuck a spoon in it has seen this phenomenon play out, too. Anyway, just wanted to share and say thanks!
Good question, it's not something I have a lot of experience in but a nice 45 degree large softbox behind your set often makes for a flattering beverage photography lighting and I assume a similar setup would flatter food/metals

@@workphlo There is video production etc so i cant tell. But its definitely a great investment for anyone who would want to specialise in product photography and retouching.
Looks great. The only thing that I think is missing is a bit of condensation on the mug to indicate that the beer was cold. I know your beer wasn't actually cold, but you get the idea.

Hey man. I’m trying to become a product photographer, I’m a videographer now but I’d like to expand my portfolio, could you make a video on how you come across selling the photos to companies or contracting clients for product photography? Btw I just came across your videos and I love your format and style 🤘🏻
The best thing to do is start working on your own product portfolio. To get practice, start by taking items around your home and giving them the product photography treatment. As Dustin has shown, no big studio or overly expensive equipment is needed.
Hey James! Thanks for commenting. I'm in a unique position because I have a lot of incoming referrals from this channel and I'm not a heavy weight on the business side, but my advice is to start with a small product photography portfolio of images your proud of and connecting with smaller companies, through Instagram and directly.
Fair question and the answer is, yes - sometimes. Paper has a slight texture to it and is usually thinner than this material which comes in Light, Medium and Heavy. I typically use heavy which is the furthest from a thin paper-like diffusion and really 'averages out' the brightness. However, I often use the nylon diffuser (linked in our description) but double them up for a more diffused result. At the end of the day though, you can get away with anything including a white wall behind you - though always the smooth the texture the smoother it may appear at deeper DOF. Thanks for commenting
I always enjoy your videos Dustin! I'm gonna have to play around with this. I'll post my results in the FB group. Also, I'm looking forward to receiving the stuff that I ordered from your shop. It should be here today. Thanks for all your videos and for opening the store. You and Karl Taylor got me into product photography.
Another excellent video from Dustin! I've been waiting for these to start reappearing :) Excellent work with fast and minimal retouch. Erdinger Weizen is a nice beer too, a bit more bitter than most Bavarian wheat beers but very fresh, especially for the hot summer months!
I hear ya! I shoot so many products outside the channel for simple stuff, pack shots etc, that I am biased towards certain genres for these videos, but I plan on making a nice diverse amount of tutorials! Stay tuned.
@@workphlo thank you so much. I'm a huge fan. It was super depressing when you weren't making videos for a long time because I think your fans love you.
It's a great shot and I've not shot for a client, so maybe it would be different, but I always use a spray bottle with water and gelatin mix to add "condensation" to the bottle, like if you pulled it from the fridge right before the pour.

Does that special background paper really make more of a difference than just using a big white sheet of paper for $8 from the art store?
