Or the pain on the top of the foot could be Arthritis. That's what I was diagnosed with. I have been to different Podiatrist and I found some won't offer much hope or actual treatments. They will do Cortisone shots though. So I have done everything from the Cortisone shots to lacing shoes so the middle of the shoe was not being laced. I have had Orthotics and I now where Orthotic inserts sold thru a Podiatrist. They do help since I have flat feet. I would ice the foot I would take Aleve. The pain returns usually in about 6 weeks after the cortisone shots. I won't do them anymore. I found I had to just deal with it and I still go out and walk miles. Some days are actually better than others with this type of pain. The pain can actually be less after walking. Much of the pain I found gets worse after sitting. When I get up it hurts until I walk around abit then it gets better. I was also told not to bother with surgery. My guess is because I have reached the senior years, and the method of treatment we are given is different than for a younger person. I refuse to sit and just whine about my foot hurting so I'm out everyday walking and hiking. Some things you just have to learn to live with that's how life is.

Yes, arthritis can be a cause and is frustrating. I can hear your frustration and I applaud you for not taking it lying down. Cortisone injections do only provide temporary relief in this situation. I can’t comment on surgery without knowing the particulars if your situation. But keep on walking and hiking!

Finally, someone who has what I have! I've had 2 podiatrists tell me that it is Arthritis. I also wear Orthotics prescribed by a Podiatrist. I've never tried Cortisone. It doesn't hurt constantly, but it is more painful after being off my feet for a time, such as when I get up in the morning. A little walking helps, but too much walking makes it worse. For some reason, it feels best if I do an exercise class like cardio for Seniors (which I am). When I recently tried to walk for an hour (like I used to), it was very painful the next day. I'm now beginning to exercise by swimming. It is easier on my feet. I keep watching videos like this, and they never mention Arthritis. Like you, I have just learned to live with it. I don't want to be taking pain relievers all the time. By trial and error, I am figuring out what works best. It was SO NICE to finally find someone with the same issue. I know your post is 2 years old, but I finally don't feel alone with this problem because it is a daily problem.

Custom orthotics are only temporary fix, your feet and ankles will become more weak and unstable. Strengthen your feet and ankles with simple exercises for a non-bandaid fix.

Thank you for this very clear description of top-of-the-foot pain which I have recently been experiencing. I think I have had shin splints from over-enthusiastic over-flexion of my feet and ankles in aqua fit classes. They take around 36 to 48 hours to feel better, but I also have bone spurs on top of both feet, so this description has been very useful in helping me to nail what is going on.

I went to a Kaiser podiatrist and he did not even mention bone spur on top of my foot, barely did an exam and I have a high arch. Told to take an anti inflammatory med. I can feel a bump there and it is painful. Definitely going for a second opinion. Good explanations. Thanks.

Oh god I hope I don't have a stress fracture. I was walking in the factory when I suddenly experienced "crunchy pain" and I started limp because it hurt so bad.
Painkillers and Voltaren creme don't do much and when I climb the stairs the spot that hurts clicks 😬

I was born with club foot and have had 3 corrective unsuccessful surgery. Basically the foot was broken and reset into a rigid position to be able to walk. I walk on the outer edge of my foot and have a lot of problems with callouses.
However now in my 50s I am getting a pain on the top of the my foot. My pain is when the foot rocks forward in the walking motion and I can’t walk unless I turn my foot outwards to be less the pain.
My dilemma now is whether to see a physio, podiatrist , or an orthopaedic surgeon to get more surgery. Short term I ice the foot and try to do self massage. I think it is tendon pain , like a sharp knife pain that literally seizes me up when I walk forward. So sharp that I whince!
I have orthotics and have had special boots in the past but now just use very rigid hiking boots to walk. Keeps my ankle stable as I had Achilles lengthened when I was a child but my heel is still not on the ground.
I know rest is good , but I am on feet a lot.
    Thanks for the video

Thank you for this information, doctor. I have pain on top of my foot and because of my exercise regime, I'm pretty sure it is a hairline fracture. I was trying to find a good orthopedic device to brace it while it heals, but most only seem to be for ankles, shins, or toes. I'm still looking for one and if you or anyone here has a recommendation, I would happily accept the guidance. Thanks again, doc.

TOP OF FOOT PAIN? SEE A FOOT DOCTOR! Don't let this video stop you from seeing your doctor! I know someone - the top of their foot pain (discovered by their foot doctor) is that they have fallen arches which have fallen so badly that they now have arthritis on top of their foot as well as cysts because the arch fell - so did the top of their foot; so the rubbing that has taken place where the top of their foot has fallen is a problem! The fallen arches are a problem!! Sometimes it hurts this person just to walk, so if they had KNOWN to go see their foot doctor when they first started experiencing a type of top of foot strange feeling, they might have been able to prevent themselves from getting so bad if their doctor had known they needed help. If someone has top of foot pain they need to see a GOOD foot doctor to find out the cause!

I broke both of my heels. As of now I don’t know if there is any other damage. They only took X-rays of the bottom of my feet and ankles. I have a piercing pain on top of my right foot on the bone coming from my big toe. I didn’t notice it until a few nights ago while sleep I had my left foot on top of my right foot and my heel pressed against that bone. It sends like a shock through my foot when that bone is pressed. I guess somehow I got a stress fracture maybe. Imma have to go get it checked out. Thanks for the content

With a stress fracture, is it possible for the top/outer side of the foot to be VERY sensitive to VERY light touch? My boyfriend has no swelling or bruising or tendon pain. But the pain DOES get worse during the day and it particularly hurts if the top of his foot presses on the ground (kneeling or pressing into the bed during sleep).
The pain seems to ONLY be in that area, and the top/inner part of his foot do not hurt to the touch, and neither does his ankle.
Lmk if you have any insight.

    • @jamig.7254
      @jamig.7254 Рік тому

If you have medical insurance, I would suggest an MRI. Stress fractures don't show up well on an ordinary X-ray.
If the MRI is clear (nothing broken), have him ace wrap it for a couple of weeks, elevate it as much as possible and rest it.
I'm not a doctor, but I have the same upper foot ailment. I've had to research & self diagnose, because there are no podiatrists where I live.
      Good luck.

I wake with beat up toes and very front of foot. Nothing is swollen. This has been going on for few years. Toe popping toe is worst part. I wear burkenstock to avoid this. I have anterior impingement of both ankles. I had arthroscopic surgery on my right ankle in 2020. The doctor removed any debris, but it didn't help with the impingement. I had cortisone shots which didn't help much. Recently, my doctor gave me a anmblio injection in my right foot. It helped a little bit. I am waiting to get the injection of the left foot, but my doctor is waiting for this injection being approved by Medicare. It has been very frustrating dealing with this. I don't walk around too well. I can walk without a cane, but I do use one for longer walks. I am just reaching out to Doctors for any advice. Thanks.

I'm sorry you're suffering with this painful condition. In the last few months, Amnio injections were pulled from the Medicare formulary. An alternative is using platelet rich plasma injections which would be as successful as the amnio, if not more so. The negative is that it is not covered by insurance.

If the pain is so hard to diagnose, it may be a form of peripheral neuropathy. This is generally difficult to find the cause. You may want to visit with a neurologist to see if this is the case.

Can you get Extensor Tendinitis from gout attacks? I don't know if I do have Extensor Tendinitis but I have pain on the top of my left foot and I felt this pain since I had that gout attack a year ago. It's painful when I walk, when I go down the stairs and when I lift the front foot. This past year has been hell and I could really use some information. Just a little medical background: I'm 35 years old, male, 5'10, 240 lbs, and I get gout attacks from time to time (1-3 times a year) and I'm also flat footed.

    • @DrAndrewSchneider
      @DrAndrewSchneider  2 роки тому

It's unlikely that you got extensor tendinitis from a gout attack. It's much more likely that you have it because of your flat feet. The instability of your flat feet cause the tendons to work harder. Consider visiting a podiatrist for medical-grade insoles or custom orthotics. That should help to stabilize your feet and help with the pain.

I had a gout attack and it finished and then a week later the tendons to all my toes made a funny feeling and that stopped. Then yesterday I got a pain further up on my foot , kind of 2/3 the way to the leg and toward the center and outer edge. Today I can hardly walk. I have to walk on my heal with the toe up and it hurts. I have to get my fathers cane and try that because I can't walk. The fool is only very slightly swollen now. If I press in the middle of the foot the pain goes away. I am going to try to put on my runners and jamb something in to put pressure in the middle. I don't have any big bumps like bone spurs on anything like that and I don't exercise. I did no hard work on that foot at all except walk around the house. I sounds similar to what you have and I don't think it was identified , I have watched 3 video's now and you are the first person I see with these symptoms.

I drank about a gallon of water and today the pain is gone from the top of my foot but it spread to the toe area so it is gout. Yesterday I could not put any weight on my right foot and the pain was terrible. Today it is not bad and slowly getting better. Very funny how the pain started and progressed. I had a gout attack about a month ago , then last week we all got the same cold or maybe a flu and I took decongestant pseudoephedrine. It dries you out and the loss of hydration could have triggered this gout.

It may be extensor tendinitis. It may be a stress fracture. Having this amount of pain for as long as you've had it, it's really hard to tell. If you haven't already, make sure to get seen for an x-ray. If that's not conclusive, then an MRI would be helpful.

It could be the shoe. It could be a tendinitis. If your foot hurts in a particular area, try skipping the laces in that area, so they don’t cross over it. That will help relieve the pressure.

Well , my redness, pain and swelling can't be fixed so here is a new one for your buddies.
A tall young man experiences a 6 inch growth in one years time at age 11. Now in high school, football is it. First game, late hit broken ankle. Set and X-Ray show thin bone density and told not to play. A coach says let's teach you to run long distances. Here are your converse tennis shoes and we will go 13 miles on these gravel roads and go to school, oh...let's average a 6 minute mile. Run, repeat, run, repeat. Now 4 years passed and the kid is given a "TEE" shirt that says "7,000 Mile Club". Yeh! Even after 3 events at track meets the kid is given the task of jogging 4 miles out of strange town to a distant water tower on hill and jog back, oh, let's average 6 minute miles. Kid goes to college impressed with his mile state record and 1:56 half mile run. (2 minute 1/2 mile is 20 MPH) Team wins meets that are 5-6 miles long on golf courses. Team wins 1-8 positions before another school comes in. They pick a number to run in the nationals in NJ and win first place. With no money for school, kid works. Work turns into job on concrete all day. 30+ years pass, Dr X-rays with nothing, pushes finger into 20 some spots and hurt like hell. Orders orthotic inserts and shown how to wear. Worn everyday without fail and feet hurt worse to the point they are off for good. Dr is confused and dismissive. 10+ years pass, now only the tops are swollen and red. No issues with ankle and blood flow checked with sonogram. Only the long bones have arthritis and enlarged at each antique stress fractures that total 7 in left foot and 9 in right foot. Swollen, Red skin and when pushed on, turns white at that point, yet quickly (2.5 seconds) turns back to Red, indicating good blood flow as the Dr indicated, plus, there was nothing they could do for a long term fix. Wear loose oversized shoes, leave laces loose and seal with it. Sucks to get old! Have a nice day! ASE Master Tech, retired!

If you're feeling a deep pain, like itching, inside your foot, it is likely a nerve issue. You may want to visit with a neurologist to test and make sure there are no issues with the nerves.

When you say stop activity, does this mean all forms of exercise including walking? I felt pain on the top of my right foot thursday last week mid 10k run. Stopped running for several days, but i still did my usual weight training, even did leg training like squat, lunges, single leg calf raises, even some plyo on friday. Foot only hurts when i run, not on any other activity. I tried running again last night, a tuesday, but when i felt some pain again on the top of the right foot, i stopped and just went on a 5K walk, frustrated. Just returned to running after 7 yrs. Been running for just 6 weeks.

    • @DrAndrewSchneider
      @DrAndrewSchneider  2 роки тому +1

I really mean to stop all activity where you feel pain. Unless you know there's an injury, like a stress fracture. Then you'll have to stop everything. My guess is you're dealing with a tendonitis and should get it checked out so you can run without pain.

any way hears a recipe for lasagna 2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil
    1 pound ground beef chuck
1/2 medium onion, diced (about 3/4 cup)
1/2 large bell pepper (green, red, or yellow), diced (about 3/4 cup)
    2 cloves garlic, minced
    1 (28-ounce)can good-quality tomato sauce
3 ounces tomato paste (half a 6-ounce can)
1 (14 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
2 tablespoons chopped fresh oregano, or 2 teaspoons dried oregano
1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley (preferably flat leaf), packed
    1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
1 pinch garlic powder and/or garlic salt
1 tablespoon red or white wine vinegar
1 tablespoon to 1/4 cup sugar (to taste, optional)
    Salt
Start by making the sauce with ground beef, bell peppers, onions, and a combo of tomato sauce, tomato paste, and crushed tomatoes. The three kinds of tomatoes gives the sauce great depth of flavor.
Let this simmer while you boil the noodles and get the cheeses ready. We're using ricotta, shredded mozzarella, and parmesan -- like the mix of tomatoes, this 3-cheese blend gives the lasagna great flavor!
From there, it's just an assembly job. A cup of meat sauce, a layer of noodles, more sauce, followed by a layer of cheese. Repeat until you have three layers and have used up all the ingredients.
1/2 pound dry lasagna noodles (requires 9 lasagna noodles - unbroken)
    15 ounces ricotta cheese
1 1/2 pounds (24 ounces) mozzarella cheese, grated or sliced
1/4 pound (4 ounces) freshly grated Parmesan cheese1/2 pound dry lasagna noodles (requires 9 lasagna noodles - unbroken)
    15 ounces ricotta cheese
Put pasta water on to boil:
Put a large pot of salted water (1 tablespoon of salt for every 2 quarts of water) on the stovetop on high heat. It can take a while for a large pot of water to come to a boil (this will be your pasta water), so prepare the sauce in the next steps while the water is heating.
    Brown the ground beef:
In a large skillet heat 2 teaspoons of olive oil on medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook until it is lightly browned on all sides.
Remove the beef with a slotted spoon to a bowl. Drain off all but a tablespoon of fat.
Cook the bell pepper, onions, and garlic; add back the beef:
Add the diced bell pepper and onions to the skillet (in the photo we are using yellow bell pepper and red onions).
Cook for 4 to 5 minutes, until the onions are translucent and the peppers softened. Add the minced garlic and cook half a minute more.
Return the browned ground beef to the pan. Stir to combine, reduce the heat to low, and cook for another 5 minutes.
    Make the sauce:
Transfer the beef mixture to a medium-sized (3- to 4-quart) pot. Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, and tomato paste to the pot.
Add the parsley, oregano, and Italian seasonings, adjusting the amounts to taste. Sprinkle with garlic powder and/or garlic salt, to taste.
Sprinkle with red or white wine vinegar. Stir in sugar, a tablespoon at a time, tasting after each addition, to taste. (The amount of sugar needed will vary, depending on how acidic the tomatoes are that you are using.)
Add salt to taste, and note that you will later be adding Parmesan, which is salty.
Bring the sauce to a simmer and then lower the heat to maintain a low simmer. Cook for 15 to 45 minutes, stirring often. Scrape the bottom of the pot every so often so nothing sticks to the bottom and scorches.
    Remove from heat.
Boil and drain the lasagna noodles:
By now the salted water you started heating in step one should be boiling. Add the dry lasagna noodles and cook them to al dente, per package directions. (Note noodles may be cooked in advance.)
Stir often to prevent from sticking. Make sure that water remains at a full rolling boil during the entire cooking to prevent noodles from sticking.
When ready, drain in a colander and rinse with cool water, gently separating any noodles that may be sticking together.
Spread a little olive oil on a large rimmed baking sheet, and lay out the cooked noodles on this sheet, turning them over so that they get coated with a little of the olive oil. This will prevent them from sticking together.
    Preheat the oven to 375°F.
    Assemble the lasagna:
In a 9x13-inch casserole or lasagna dish, ladle a cup of sauce and spread it over the bottom of the dish. Arrange one layer of lasagna noodles lengthwise (about 3 long noodles, the edges may overlap, depending on your pan) over the sauce. Ladle a third of the remaining sauce over the noodles.
Sprinkle a layer of a third of the grated mozzarella on top of the lasagna sauce. Add half of the ricotta cheese, by placing cheese dollops every couple of inches. Sprinkle half the grated parmesan cheese evenly over the top of the ricotta cheese.
Apply the second layer of noodles and top it with half of the remaining sauce. Add half of the remaining mozzarella, the remaining ricotta cheese, and another the remaining Parmesan.
Finish with another layer of noodles. Spread the remaining sauce over the top layer of noodles and sprinkle with the remaining mozzarella cheese.
    Bake:
Cover the lasagna pan with aluminum foil, tented slightly so it doesn't touch the noodles or sauce). Bake at 375°F for 45 minutes. Uncover in the last 10 minutes if you'd like more of a crusty top or edges.
    Cool and serve:
Allow the lasagna to cool for at least 15 before serving. Leftovers will keep for about 5 days. You can reheat it in a conventional oven or microwave. Leave the aluminum tent on for storage. (Try to keep the aluminum foil from touching the sauce.)

For a month I've had front foot pain across the top and front bottom (not the heal at all) plus ankle pain that shoots up to my thighs and hips sometimes. Stiff muscles on the back of the calfs for 2.5 weeks. I did do 3 hours of dancing in high heels at my daughters wedding on a concrete floor before the pain. I had not worn high heels in 3 years and even fell while in them. 8 days after the wedding, while walking, I had the worse pain in my feet and weakness and it never goes away. I evern tried new tennis shoes but that didn't help. I had blood work done and xray of my feet and ankle and so far nothing is showing. The pain only goes away with ibuprofen but then comes right back. I was a 4-5 a day walker of 1-2 miles and now I can't go one block without pain. What do you think it is? Could it be from that night of dancing? Could pain suddenly happen 8 days from that and walking a few miles aggravated something within my feet?

    • @DrAndrewSchneider
      @DrAndrewSchneider  2 роки тому +1

It seems crazy, but it can be from the night of dancing in heels. It could have started an inflammatory process that only became painful a week later. There are stronger anti-inflammatories that you may want to try from your doctor. Over the counter, if you can take them, you may want to try Aleve twice a day consistently for a couple of weeks. Hope you feel better soon!
