🇷🇸 OVČAR BANJA, Serbia | Mount ATHOS in SERBIA? | Serbian MONASTERY ADVENTURE! | Serbia Travel

- 🇷🇸 OVČAR BANJA, SERBIA - Welcome to another Serbia Travel series! Two of my previous trips were heavily impacted by the pandemic, but in 2021 I managed to explore quite extensively, visiting outstanding locations such as Kruševac, Subotica, Bajina Bašta and more!
I’m once again based in one of my favourites - Užice, in Zlatibor. We’re heading further afield for now - a Serbian Orthodox Monastery Adventure in the nearby Ovčar Banja, not far from Čačak - known as Serbia’s Holy Mountain or Serbia’s Mount Athos!
The history in this region of the Balkans dates back around 900 years in relation to monasteries. The entire region is covered with them, most of which are incredibly isolated and secluded due to the very nature of them.
I’ve always sensed that Serbia is an underrated country, particularly compared to one of its neighbours, Croatia, as well as countries in Western Europe. But, over the years, I’ve found there’s just as much beauty, history and architecture (and amazing Serbian food) to discover, with many possible day trips from Belgrade!

🇬🇧 Welcome back to Serbia! It's my 5th time here! This time, based in Uzice, I'm going to be focusing much of my time on western, southern, and eastern Serbia (you never know, this may change!). I'm hoping to make around 15 videos here this time. If you haven't seen my Mexico series, you might not know that this is my final travel series in relation to long-term travel, as I am planning to move to Poland on a semi-permanent basis (I'm now a Polish citizen) in November and plan to move on to other things in life post UA-cam (this is likely to be a year off, potentially returning in a different guise!). So Serbia gets the ending! Enjoy Ovčar Banja!
Serbian subtitles are available but currently only in cyrillic - I'm working on this
🇷🇸 Dobrodošli nazad u Srbiju! Peti put sam ovde!
Welcome back mate
Thank you for showing the “world” my little country! Greetings from Miami ,
Jovan Vesković
Awesome, Srpski looks very quiet, no many people around!
Good seeing your adventures this far 👍
Take good care David
See you soon in another video adventure!
Ah yes Serbia the country filled with amazing history
Serbia and Montenegro are places I would go right after my trip to Veracruz
Serbia, a country with more than a 1000 years old history. There is much to see for sure!
And sometimes when I say Serbia I sometimes get 'oh you mean Siberia?'. Classic. If only they knew haha
The history of the Serbs in this part of the Balkans goes much further then 1000 years into the past, but in those days the name of the nation was not used, but they lived under different names, they were known by other names although they called themselves Serbs. History actually contains a lot of forgeries, since most of it was written by the conquerors, i.e. the occupiers who conquered these places, but the origin nation survived anyway, preserving the traditions and culture that spread by word of mouth, today with modern procedures, as well as with more accessible information, research, etc., we know that history needs to be rewritten, there are thousands of proofs for this. All this has been further corrupted by modern history. Today we can say with certainty that the Serbs are autochthonous in these places and go back to the period of the Vinča culture and even further, which is also confirmed by genetics, so the theory about the immigration of Slavs is a farce because there is no evidence for such a theory, but there is overwhelming evidence that tells the exact opposite story. Of course, there have been migrations throughout history, but not in the form that official history claimed until recently. In Jewish records you can find that Serbs certainly lived in these places already at the time of the creation of the first Roman Republic, which means at least 2400 years, and there are many such records in the history of other nations where Serbs were mentioned. This is also confirmed by the finds, which some Westerners thought were fakes, as they resembled today's Serbian culture too much, but in the end it turned out that all the finds were autochthonous, i.e. original. Interests that are purely political and have nothing to do with reality are even more prevalent in the world today and they are also a serious obstacle to the academic public and relevant historians to reveal the truth, so we continue to listen to nonsense and insulting claims, which are more often the result of nationalism and humiliation than serious scientific explanation and therefore the real truth.
@@zoranmarkovic1123 It may be true, I don´t deny that.
BUT: The serbs as "serbs" did not exist in the balkans before the 7th century AD.
@@JohnnyWalker1077 Málek, this is precisely the biggest lie, because there is no evidence for the immigration of Slavs, i.e. also Serbs, in the 7th century. But there is a lot of evidence that Serbs are autochthonous in the Balkans and this is confirmed by genetic research and many records. The Serbs lived on Balkan as they do today, but under different names, depending on the circumstances, and this is exactly what you find in the old records, where the writer explains that they always called themselves Serbs, and according to the records, this goes all the way back 2400 years into the past, but archeology and ancestors prove that Serbs have been here even since the time of the Vinča culture, which means more than five thousand years. Not long ago, with the help of genetic research, they found that these are our ancestors. Today, on the profession of history and archeology is dominated by politics and thus censorship. Many who studied in the Viennese school of history don't want to dispute to his profesors, even though they have solid evidence, that's why today’s archeology is not archeology as it should be, but is a political interest group. Either way, the day is coming when history will have to be rewritten. Until now, history was written by the occupiers, i.e. the victors, and they wrote lies, precisely for the sake of possible future pretensions, but time has changed and will overcome this sentimental crowd to speak with the voice of truth. By the way, the Vatican and the Hagsburg were the biggest falsifiers of history, everyone who is at least a little serious knows that.
@@JohnnyWalker1077 You know, the Serbs are the only ones who have an old proverb "the Emperor Trajan have goat ears", or on Serbian "u Cara Trajana kozje uši" and if you know history, explain to me how the Serbs know and mention that Trajan have goat ears, if they did not live at that time, and they are the only ones who have that proverb which is passed down from generation after generation for centuries. Of course, the goat's ears are just a parable for a historical fact that is now known to many historians, but a nation could not take it as a parable just like that, especially not because practically all of those times were illiterate farmers with the exception of rulers and rare individuals, so the common people shouldn't know anything about it, but in fact everyone knew. This is just one example, but in Serbian tradition there are dozens, if not hundreds of such stories that spread from mouth to mouth and this is also mentioned in various records throughout history. It is interesting that in historical and archaeological research, no one has ever compared the old writings in monuments and buildings with the Old Serbian language, although they could not decipher the individual messages, after which one of the academics took heart and compared the records with the Old Serbian language, and got an incredible discovery, so he deciphered the text. Why is that so? Probably from the widely accepted lie about the immigration of Slavs, and the underestimating attitude towards Serbs.
Beatifiul country.Thank you so much.¡¡¡¡ Saludos desde México.
You're welcome Maria! Hope all is well en Mexico!
Beautiful Serbia! I would like to see the 4k walk-around videos. Thanks David
I'll do a trial run for this weekend!
The monasteries and the scenery truly beautiful, and like always doing a great job showings us places i personally would love to visit. Haya pronto!✌🇲🇽✌
Thanks Jose glad you enjoyed! Those monasteries are always gorgeous!
Very nice video David. Other, probably more important reason why monasteries in Serbia are secluded is to be out of the way of Turks. During almost 5 centuries of Turkish occupation, monasteries and churches near roads and cities were looted and burned, especially in the early period of Turkish rule. In order to preserve the property and ensure safety for the priests, the monasteries were built far from the main roads, deep in the forests and high in the mountains.
Excellent addition Mr Smith. I forgot to mention re how they escaped the Turks and hid in caves. There's a church in a cave in the opposite direction. Was too far to walk!!
Thank you David, beautiful video, predivna Srbija!
Predivna indeed! Thanks Hermann, you're welcome!
Hvala Davide što prikazujes Srbiju i moj Čačak u lepom svetlu. Srećan put gde god putovao ❤🍀
Мајка Србија
Hvala za predivne kadrove moje Srbije.
Good video, Serbia has been on my bucket list for a while. But, there is a monastery next to a Starbucks in Bucharest lol.
You're joking!! Sounds like my kind of monastery!
Oh this! Those drone shots get more epic each time. Loved every minute. Thanks David! "Who am I? Fu#£ing Indiana Jones"?! 🤣 Yes, please do the walk around videos too! ❤
ok hun! Uzice walkaround will come soon! Lots of spomeniks in Cacak in the next video!
Thanks for visiting Serbia and for efforts to pronounce Serbian words and do it really well.
You still make me laugh, nothing like good old English humour 🤣
By the way, drone footage is special
Thank you and you're welcome! At this stage I'd just arrived from 5 months in Mexico so my brain was still transitioning from Spanish syllable stress to Serbian as well as sound differences! It's becoming more natural again now as well my cyrillic reading. Sorry I'm a language geek!
Re humour, Serbia is like the only country I can use British humour and know that everyone will understand it! Why do you think I keep returning HAHA
@@davidostrowski679 that's great man. Keep up with great content. And enjoy Serbia.
Excellent presentation 👏 👌 👍
un lugar muy bonito David!! seguimos tus pasos desde chihuahua, espero que algun dia vuelvas a visitarnos! seguimos contigo en tus viajes!!!!
¡Gracias Jalil! ¡Extraño a Chihuahua! especialmente montados!! JAJAJA
I'd like to see more of Serbia, I'v only been to Ljubljana (capital of Slovenia) but I don't know much of the balkan area even though I used to live next door. Great videos! I'd like to see a walking tour around a city there!
Thanks Bob! I'll trial one in Užice. In Mexico they often performed better than the regular videos! I had an English student in Ljubljana once but haven't been there myself. Now that I'll be staying in Europe for the foreseeable future it's definitely on my plan as well as Croatia and more of Italy!
@@davidostrowski679 please some videos on Croatia
hey man got no plans unfortunately, these Serbia videos are my final videos. If I go to Croatia I'll just be taking photos or writing blog posts for foreseeable future!
You are a master with that drone!
Those Mexipigeons taught me well lol
Saludos amigo from zacatecas Mexico. Have a great time there amigo remember you are always welcome in mexico ok
gracias amigo!
Beautiful drone shots. Serbia has lovely scenery. Your comments while walking over the ‘hell bridge’! 🤣🤣 If you want to do a 4K walk around or two, sounds good. Always interesting to see the city. Great video! 💕
The hell bridge! ARGH! Yes 4K walkaround videos will probably only be a couple considering I'm based in Uzice for so long
@@davidostrowski679 Did you hear that hell bridge collapsed few months ago with 30 people on it? It was really hell bridge :(
Have friends from Serbia in my home town, Riverside, Illinois...beautiful people...and beautiful country...But, where's the people in there??...Greetings from USA, Dear David!!!.....
Hey Maria! Very quiet area, like when I go to the middle of nowhere en Mexico Norte jaja
I was born in Čačak and grew up in the Chicagoland area(Jefferson Park/Elmhurst). Thank you for your kind words about us Serbs! You're always welcome to visit 🙂
Welcome back, David!!!
thanks man! I am a total language geek and I always find Serbian fun to read (esp cyrillic) and pronounce. I always find it much easier to pronounce than Spanish or Portuguese. Must be the Slavic roots lol
he's back... YEAH! looking forward to the new series David
YASSS! Good to be in a country where I'm not accused of missing everything lol
@@davidostrowski679 for every 1 thing you might've missed in Mexico, you uncovered 100 things no other UA-camr would dare to try.

What a special area! How do you find these incredible places?
Honestly a lot of the time it's a case of just searching Google Maps. Because I'm based in one place for 3 months I just have a look around the local area for certain things and then research more!

Oh god those walking bridges!
Nightmare!
@@davidostrowski679 This type of bridge is called a "Suspension Bridge" and when you walk on it it sways (which you have probably experienced 😀) which can be a lot of fun sometimes.
Great job with your videos, keep up,we look forward to it.
This was great! I've got a bit of a day off today so after watching this I linked right into your Serbia playlist and just watched a video from January 2020 where you've returned to Serbia and become a semi-nomad being tired of the life of a constant traveler. If only we'd known! I can imagine you must be exhausted now. But good luck finding a beach where you can winter over and I hope you still make a video now and again. You're intelligent and funny and it's nice to walk around different cities with you, although as probably your mum's contemporary I'm always a bit worried for you. Then I just think, it'll be fine, huns. 😊. Take care and looking forward to more Serbia (or Croatia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Hungary (ooo the Goths in Hungary... fascinating) or wherever you winter).
omg yes Jan 2020 was when I originally tried to stop travelling.... then hello corona! This will be my final series although there may be a few surprises near the end!
David, dobrodošao nazad!
Go to east Serbia: Lazarev kanjon and cave, Zaječar, Negotin, Vratna, Bor, Gornjak monastery. A lot to see in that part of Serbia.
Hey man! Zaječar and Negotin are on my list! We'll see what happens. I feel like not many people go over that way!
Blederije waterfall... Roman excavations...
@@davidostrowski679 visit the village Mihajlovac when visiting Negotin for my sake 😅
So impressed with your knowledge of Serbia and Cacak with surraunding area...
Thanks man! I really enjoy this area of Serbia, I think mainly because of the scenery, especially later in the year! I love areas like Vojvodina as well (hoping to return there this time around). I filmed a video in Požega today... loved it!
Glad you visited so many sights of this beautiful country. If you like the monasteries, you should really visit Manasija or Ravanica.
Manasija is coming I think next month! Looks amazing!
@@davidostrowski679 Very nice, looking forward to watch your video about one of the most legendary monasteries in Serbia!
Can't wait to see what's on the itinerary. Thanks David
You're welcome Roy! Will be 95% new locations with a couple of revisits to old ones as well!
Bro do it the way u want it, it's amazing either way 😊
Yep deffo man I'll probably do a walkaround video in Uzice and see how it goes!
David, I'm glad to see you back in Serbia. Just saw your Cacak video. You keep on doing great videos, I belive you know that already. :D
Great scenery, short and clear explanations of everything. Also I'm pretty sure you've visited more monasteries in Serbia in a few days or weeks than 95% of Serbs in a lifetime. :D
If I may I would you suggest you to visit Vrnjacka banja also. Very famous turistic place in Serbia. And very famous Žiča (13th century) and Studenica (12th century) monastery near Kraljevo while you in the area.
Keep up the good work and wish you to spend great time in Serbia again and wherever you go. Take care and rock on. :D
Hey! Great minds think alike because every place you mentioned is on my plan! Vrnjacka Banja was on my plan last year but it was in like October so I think the weather wasn't great! Kraljevo should be in about 5 videos time!
@@davidostrowski679 Even better 😀, I belive you gonna like Vrnjacka banja. I've been there many times as a kid and visited again month ago first time in 20+ years and still love it. It's a water Vrnjci place. 😀
So if you already planned all of it I'll give you another suggestion. 😀 In the area. Beautiful Oplenac church near Topola (and Arandjelovac, Knjaz Miloš water), all in mosaic inside. Built by Serbian king Peter I Karadjordjevic and place where all Karadjordjevic dynasty laid to rest. Topola is a birth place of one of the most famous Serbian national hero Karadjordje (Black George), leader of the 1st Serbian Uprising in 1804 that happened near Topola. He liberated Serbia from Ottoman empire. Later knez Miloš completed that job in full. 😀
So that can be 3 in 1 for you on a very short distance. Oplenac, Topola, Arandjelovac. The heart of Šumadija.
Enjoy your stay!
Absolutely beautiful. Hope to go there someday.
Many stories of miracles occurring in some of these Holy monasteries. God Bless you for this wonderful video.
You buy me with this one! 👏👏👏
Been a while since I commented...wow times have change literally have to tell grown people to be nice.
Anywho .... every time those drone shoots are WOW. REWATCH IT JUST WOW.
My friend,i really enjoyed in this episode, you really tried to show as much as you could, I'm hoping that you enjoyed yourself as well. It took a lot of effort, considering how much you must walk. I hope that it was worth exploring.
It was really enjoyable yes! I know I probably could've rented a car but one thing I love about Serbia is simply walking into farmland surrounded by all the animal noises!
@@davidostrowski679 yup! People should walk until they cannot anymore , until certain years gets us and car starts to look better option . But, I'm sure there is many years Infront for you before this happen. I wish you good health for many years and love for humans. And for cats and dogs as well 🙂.
Amazing video on OVČAR, the best.
Hi David....!!!
Aquí presente!!!
Damn I needed this, coming back home to Cacak after almost a decade in US, thanks man.
Come to Nis, I will give you a tour!
Thanks Milan! I've been twice before but I do plan to be back in the area (hoping to go to Kruševac again and possibly further north east to Negotin. I'll see how it goes. I always liked Niš, the first time I was only meant to stay a few days but 3 weeks later I was still there haha
12:00 minute, best view... wow... you feel the silence of the nature by view ...
Thank you!
Fun fact Mount Athos or Sveta Gora (literal translation is Holy Wood) was created by Serbian kings and today all of the orthodox nations have at least one monastery there (Serbian is called Hilandar). It is basically orthodox christianity autonomous region of Greece similar like Vatican in Italy.
I would like to se in your tour of Serbia oldest Serbian still standing church and you can find it in Novi Pazar (Church of saint apostle's Peter and Paul)... Nature in western and eastern Serbia is really beautiful.
I'll be in Novi Pazar in early October! Planning to head over to eastern Serbia too!
Well done, beautiful video!
Thanks Edvin!

David, you have a grate name.Maybe its mape for your personal road to religion.Serbia is beautifull, thanks
Watching video for second time trying to understand that mysterious country monasteries scary .the other side is nice thanks David .
Very nice overkill! They should model more new developments on places like these monasteries. Yet, as I think you observed, the grey concrete parts of central Uzice are somehow attractive.
Yes Fred! A lot of people say Uzice is the ugliest city in Serbia, yes it's not traditionally pretty like somewhere like Subotica in the north but it has a unique charm for deffo!
@@davidostrowski679 I used to be more caught up in an idyllic idea of how our communities should be. It's good to see different perspectives. Japanese shows have helped change my thoughts without changing my recommendations. From Tokyo to Kyoto Japan's population dense - a little like LA in America oddly. So many of those shows have taken place in a not so pretty place. Define, eh? Japan is more walkable. Is London isn't so different? In other words, it's magic. Un mundo magico. It's all so lovely. My faith informs me that it's about having ears to hear. It's unburdening! But to hear can mean to see and love the place!
Thanks 😊

The bridge actually collapsed not too long ago
I heard! I mentioned it in a recent video after people had told me. Scary! A huge tragedy that people lost their lives.
💅💅💅💅💅💅💅💓💓💓💓
You missed one very secluded church (Savine vode) its 30-45 min walk up a mountain. You should have gone to the top of Kablar because view from top is soo nice.
No I didn't miss those things, I chose not to go to them, just like I chose not to climb everest or fly to Mars in this video.
Maybe next time highlight what was actually SELECTED to be INCLUDED in a video instead of trying to devalue someone's experience. It's not gonna work. You probably 'should have' been doing something more productive instead of criticising what a stranger didn't do on the internet but you don't see me messaging you about it
@@davidostrowski679 I am not criticising you, i think video is awesome. I just think your expiriance of Ovcar Banja would be bettter if you visited those two places, because i am very often in Ovcar banja and those places are my favorit.
Fair enough, but it's incredibly annoying to receive comments about things I CHOSE not to do. When researching a video I SELECT things I want to do, I don't miss them. Ultimately I enjoyed my day and that's all that matters. Telling someone they 'should' have done things is completely devaluing. Also, filming a video can take up to 5x longer than just going there. There simply wasn't time to climb mountains. Drone filming alone can take over 1 hour
Si to more 4K walks
consider it done!
The last thing you need is another thing to do. Work and write are the prime things for sure. Yet I'll add something about language. If you pick Poland as your base, you'll learn Polish as you did Spanish. I just suggest that you not only keep up your Spanish but do a reverse of your work and improve your Spanish online. I know you've thought about it. Probably you read a few things in addition to throwing yourself in the maelstrom. Not that you need to know the Spanish word for maelstrom...but why not? Life is a whirlwind on land or water. A tunnel to go through or a hill to climb regardless of warnings. You feel old right now. I promise you my suggestion, which is to concentrate on being bi-lingual will never grow old! It's what I'm trying right now with Spanish which we've come across together - you much more effectively. I suspect that it's better than levels of yoga. Certainly better than levels of dietary restriction which have unexpectedly little reward and no fudge. Better to talk with your followers! You probably speak Spanish like a pro and are too modest. If not...I suggest. If you read this, thank you for taking an imaginary seat at Nanny O'Brien's when I should have been asleep!
Maelstrom! That's a good word! I definitely want to keep up my Español. You never know, I'll probably be back in Mexico at some point. But for now, Serbia is the perfect welcome break!! Hope you're doing well Fred! Love your detailed comments as always!
3 days ago, that bridge you crossed collapsed and killed 2 women.
I heard! i mention it in an upcoming video. Scary!
Kosovo i Metohija 1300 Serbs Monestary and Churchs🙋
Terrible place Uzice and Ovcar Banja. It looks so sad and dark.
Let me guess you're from somewhere in Mexico with fake brightly colored buildings
Great review. Unfortunatelly, that suspension bridge collapsed couple of weeks back when group of 50 pigrims tried to climb it simoultaniously, leaving 2 women dead. :(
What do you mean that it is difficult to determine the origin of these monasteries, they are all monasteries of Serbian origin.
I think I was probably talking about origin as in the exact date of construction, obviously they are Serbian
@@davidostrowski679 You are absolutely right, most of the old Serbian churches were wrongly dated in order to encourage them to convert to Christianity. Most of them are much older, they come from the pagan era, as their shape clearly shows.
