    When I entered my first classroom in 1982, I was appalled to find 15 404s (plus a few Elnas and Singer zig-zags. They were wonderful workhorses for my junior high students. I foolishly replaced them with plastic wonders😢. My final teaching years in a different state included an after school sewing program and found two 404s which my students quickly realized were the best machines.
    What a wonderful find, Andy! Pure sewing pleasure!

      Thanks for sharing. I feel very lucky to have found such a sweet 404 and from the minute I unpacked it I knew it was the one ( out of many, many I restored) that I would keep. I read once that SInger sold thousands of the 404 model in the early 60s to high schools all around the US for sewing and Home Ec classes. I sold one years ago to a young man who said he learned to sew on a 404 in school in Wyoming in a manditory class and he wanted one for sewing his camping gear carry bags, etc. Thanks for watching my channel.

      @@madvelila I kept a 329K model and I've been offered a 328K. I did a 327K but messed up reinstalling the take-up and that put me off of the model.     • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  Рік тому +1

      Thank you, Jodie. That series covers everything, but if you just want to get it moving you might try this lubrication video:
      ua-cam.com/video/raYAkJ0-jic/v-deo.html Putting fresh oil, especially on the main bushings for the shafts, and heating the parts with a hair dryer will usually get you going. There could be a jammed-up bobbin case, but I've found most of the time it is dried up, hard oil in the shaft bearings. I just put the regular Singer oil in the oil ports and heat the shaft bushings, or let it sit overnight. The new oil can soften the old and once it starts moving a little and you get a full handwheel rotation, it really breaks free. It's a great machine and worth the effort. Thanks for watching, and good luck.

Thanks for the dating update. Our 631 was made around 1965 so I figured the same for your 632G. I'm surprised it was made a decade earlier. The Germain models were always different in some ways. @@VolvoLaplanderCamper Yes, the bakelite then nylon plastic cams and gears have always been problematic, haven't they? That is one reason the machines with steel gears are so appealing to me. I have a cousin who sold Viking brand machines for about 20 years and they were quite expensive compared to other brands at the time, but built strongly. I read once that folks were using 3D printers to replace the broken bakelite cams. We also had "Home Economics CLasses" in the US but it depended on the School District if boys were allowed to participate. The schools here in Arizona only allow girls to take the classes. We had to take "Combined Shop" courses instead.

    Oh Andy - that was such great fun to watch. I thought "Well, surely he's going to stop there, there's hardly any room left under that foot now for any more layers to even fit!". And then you folded it again and, by golly, you got it all under the foot and - with a little introduction to what was expected of him - Titus dug in his heels and was off galloping. It was a lovely way to start of my Monday evening here in New Zealand. (It's been a rainy, Spring day and now it's a rainy evening, perfect conditions for a bit of knitting and watching a fun little video or two - but doubly-so when there's one from you.)

I have done leather, aluminum cans, and thin balsa wood. ballistic nylon for military sear covers, etc. Just a strong little workhorse, but can sew thin lace, etc. too. It's been so hot and dry here in Arizona that a rainy day sounds like heaven to me. Just the thought of it felt like a breeze came through the room. Best to Clark, and take care.

    So glad to see a new video from you. Your videos are always informative, interesting, and so creatively done. In your series about the Singer 466, you mentioned that your wife found that 466 for you for $14.01 on a Goodwill auction site. Well, since then, I’ve been looking at GoodwillFinds and ShopGoodwill, just for fun, as I DO NOT need any more sewing machines. I believe I remember seeing a 404 for sale and the final bidder getting it for $16.00. If my memory is intact, I was amazed, and I’m so glad it may have been you and Titus. From those two sites I like to bookmark some of the Singer Slant Machines I see for auction or sale and then after an auction or sale has ended, I can see how much it went for on my bookmarked site, just for fun.

      That must have been me b/c I don't remeber seeing such a low sold price on a 404 before. I track listings and sales sometimes too, the compare to eBay prices. Some real bargains can be founs on GW but my problem was half the time the machine was damage due to poor packing. Titus was packed extreamly well and the materials may have cost more the the $16 I paid to be honest. I have been surprised lately the low prices on the 99K models! Thanks for the comment, and say hi to Betty Ann please.

      Thanks for watching. In an effort to keep the slideshow short, I did not show much of the case. It was grimy for being stored in a garage but cleaned up nicely. It needed the vinyl cover recemented all along the bottom, one wood stop block reattached and the spring for the attachment box holder was broken ( that's what scratched the tip of the nose cover) The last servicing person loaded all the gears with some gooey black grease. I replaced the bulb with an LED, the machine bed cushions, and the foot controller cushions. This is the last you'll see of Titus. It took me a month just to do that work between chemo treatments and testing, just working a little at a time. I feel lucky to have found the machine and having been able to restore it.

He has manuals and maybe this one could help: store.tandtrepair.com/simada.html It shows it is for the Futura Models 900-920-925, and the Creative Touch Models 1030-1036. Hello Andy Tube - I just picked up a Singer crinkle finish 228 “Godzilla “ (with blackside) shuttle machine for $20. I’m trying to find out more about it and also I was trying to find the best way to message you and I see this comment section is most current.

      I've never heard of or seen a 228 here. Some online research shows it was made in Monza, Italy which explains why I have no documentation for it either. It must not have been sold here in the US. You can buy and download a copy of the Service Manual which is fortunate for you. That flip-out cage for the attachment box is inside the wood case cover. Sorry I did not show that clearly, but only looking inside the cover. I used a #16 Jeans needle like these www.schmetzneedles.com/collections/jeans-denim-home-sewing-machine-needles Thanks for watching.

    Hey Andy, do you have any videos or know of any that would show me how to convert a knee bar machine to a foot controller?

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  Рік тому

      It's more of a disengagement than a conversion. If you have a working knee bar arrangement then you already have the foot pedal in a bracket in the cabinet. You simply push/slide the pedal out of the holding bracket and set it on the floor. The bracket & knee bar remain in the cabinet for future use. @@derrickjacobs3375 I have no videos of such a conversion. I emailed around to friends today and they have replied now that they know of no such video but ask if you make one to let us know. I've never seen the model like yours in person. I do have a copy of the long list of parts with diagrams and descriptions of the 99K-24. It shows the knee lever and parts of the controller and motor. One friend sent a PDF collage of some Singer wiring diagrams. You can have those for free if you'd like them. Email to andymanuals53@gmail.com. It's important to put this on the subject line "ATTN: ALAN - DOCS FROM AT" and in the narrative section put this "Alan, AT says to ask for the 99K-24 PARTS and the SInger Wiring PDF" By doing that he will reply to you with the documnets and bill me. I don't want to sound derogatory, but why would you choose to keep this one that can only do straight stitches instead of one of the more capable 4xx ones?

    • @ZacharyDBrooks
      @ZacharyDBrooks Рік тому +4

      I use a 404 for my main machine. Granted the difference will be very minute, but a straight stitcher will give a more precise straight stitch than a zigzag capable machine. Since 99.9% of sewing is straight stitch, I personally prefer to get a perfect straight stitch rather than a bunch of fancy stitches I will never use.

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  Рік тому +8

      No offense taken, Dwayne 😀I think by "more capable" you mean ZigZag and ZZ Pattern sewing. I've read that the first widely used sewing machine was invented by a French tailor, Barthélemy Thimonnier, in 1829. The first zigzag stitch sewing machine was patented in 1873 by Helen Blanchard. Most sewing is still done with straight stitch industrial machines to this day, although there are plenty that also have ZZ capability. We own Regina, one of the Singer 403A models I restored; ua-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKKyqvdDRwS-9MfLuwSNJTcg.html for serious ZZ and patterned ZZ and monogramming needs. My wife still has her 40+ years old heavy metal Brother Serger for use with knit and double knit sewing when needed. I have the pink "Jetson" SInger Buttonholer, and one of the Singer Automatic ZigZaggers for use on the 404 is needed. Most of the sewing with the 404 would be heavy materials and ballistic nylon and garment and other leather where we use straight stitching and topstitching. Model 404 has the same motor and gearing as the 401A and 403A and some heavier bushings and wastes no energy pushing the cam stack around, so all power is to the needle where we want it the most. It has half of the moving parts of its ZZ siblings and I think it could last another 50 to 100 years just by replacing the motor brushes if needed. Thanks for watching my channel, Dwayne, and take care.

      @@andytubesewing1953 Thanks for the comprehensive answer! And to @madvelila and @ZacharyDBrooks as well. The part about not pushing the cam stack around did not occur to me. I always only thought of the different models as offerings for different budgets and therefore reduced feature sets. Now I see another reason why people who use VSMs tend to have a lot of them 😀. And now that you mentioned the materials you use, I am very curious to see things you do with your machines! Maybe you would like to show that too?

      @@dwaynetube You are correct also, about the budget pricing, in a way. The 403A was more affordable than the 401A but still could sew 20+ designs. Most people bought the 404 b/c they wanted a strong straight stitch machine. Thousands of the 404 models were sold to high schools all around the US for use in Home Economics classes and Sewing Classes. You can still find a few with engraving on the back of the base with a school name and inventory number. About what we sew with our 404 and 403A; we keep that business totally separate from this YT Channel. We have a specialized customer base and do not advertise or have an online presence. We ship 2 X per year to SE Asia. I appreciate that you watch my channel. and I did enjoy your question as I'm sure plenty of other viewers were wondering that same thing.
