I consider myself a veteran on Greyhound travelling. I started traveling in Greyhound Buses since 1998, and buses overseas. NEVER put any of your carry-on or belongings under your seat. People sometimes spill their drinks and they end up on the floor. I've learned my lessons the hard way.
That's actually a great point. I've had that happen to me before too. I got a Monster energy drink spilled all over my bag. That's why I prefer to keep my carry-on bags in the overhead bin but there have been times when I had to put them under my seat.
Yes this is why my local public transportation bus doesn’t allow cup drinks only bottle drinks
I wish there were more channels as helpful as this.
Thanks!
Thank you so very much for all your postings. O.o live in Ecuador, al the common and very inexpensive method of intercity travel is the bus system, similar to Greyhound. Your postings don't always parallel the local system, but there are similarities. Thank you!! My wife and I use your advice always. Keep up the great work.
A loyal fan forever.
Bring a sweatshirt or hoodie. Even if its 100 degrees out, you'll be glad you did. Especially after dark.
hey! just wanted to let u know that I got to my destination thanks to your help it was a 3 day trip and was super scared up until my second transfer so just wanted to thank u for everything💯
No problem! Glad you made it!
First time riding a Greyhound bus today , 15 hour ride, was kinda nervous but after watching your videos I feel a lot better about riding the bus. thank you!
No problem. Hope you have a great trip!
Thank you Glad i found your channel i am talking a bus trip from Arkansas to south Texas in a week a lil nervous but your tips helped out god bless
No problem.Glad my videos could help you out. Have fun on your trip!
Thanks so much for this! I'm taking a loong trip from LA to Dallas and I needed all these videos. Quite frankly, I'm very anxious with long distance transport but your videos are helping me relax a little more. Thank you.
No problem! Glad my videos could help with some of your pre-trip concerns. If you have any other questions you think I might be able to help with feel free to ask. Have a great trip!
+GreyhoundGURU I'm on the greyhound now, it's much peaceful than I expected I hope it stays that way!
That's awesome!
Love your laugh! 😊 thank you for all your videos!
Now you're making me blush....
This can also help if you're riding in Amtrak coach class. Same basic concept. And Amtrak does sell a kit, with blanket, eye mask and such.
i wasn’t going to like or comment on this video i don’t even know why i’m watching this but i see how much time and effort you put into this video and i appreciate that
take baby wipes.
When I'm on a 3-day trip going to Las Vegas I bring my own trail mix and a couple of cereal bars and my bottle of water and my Paul Stanley book to read and I always bring my hand sanitizer with me.
I was VERY anxious about riding the greyhound by myself for the first time but watching your videos has definitely made me feel more at ease. I mean my trip isn't till September but I like knowing what to expect. Thank you so much!
No problem. Glad my videos could be of some help. I'm sure you'll have a great trip!
1985 rode greyhound from Tampa to Los Angeles and back. I was 19 years old. Guess it was my bucket list trip.
You sir are amazing and I am so glad that you made these videos. I called customer service and I had a thousand questions because I have never ridden before but they were rude and unhelpful. Thank you for these videos they really helped me alot and answered questions I didnt even know that I had!
I used a hockey goalie equipment bag my wife sewed a big black hawks patch on it so it would stand out i used the locks too on my under bus bag and backpack for when i slept.
Thank You for this video! Traveling this weekend on a bus
this will be my first time on the grey hound bus at the end of July. Your tips are soooo helpful and i feel more confident riding now. Thank you so much!!! 😘😍
No problem. Glad my videos could help. Hope you have a safe trip!
I know this video maybe old but I much appreciate this video tips. Because I'm moving to a new place in my state but I need to use the Greyhound to my destination. So thanks so much :3
This was insightful as well as entertaining. Thanks!
No problem!
On point. I keep everything I couldn't afford to lose in my backpack which goes with me /everywhere/ - even if a break off the bus is just 5 or 10 or 15 minutes outside for a cigarette or quick soda purchase. About things to do, a book on where you're travelling to, or something else you like to read, is great. A notebook/diary is excellent w/ a few extra pens/pencils. I recently got Spotify before my New Orleans/Atlanta/Richmond trip in case I decide to switch up to stuff that's not stored on my phone, or listen to new stuff I discover when in the new place I am at. Use the download mode on there to download stuff when in good coverage/WiFi so you can keep listening if the bus/train passes through a dead zone (plenty on the highways). Make sure you have headphones that are comfortable for long hours of wearing. After 8 hours of wearing cheap earbuds you ears will likely be sore.
some really nice tips here, thankyou. I laughed when you mentioned deodorant ;)
After a day or so on the greyhound bus that deodorant is your best friend lol
I’m prepared to take an aeroplane for those long distance Journeys. Take me quickly safely and comfortable...
Thanks GreyhoundGuru. All of what you've said is well said. I am about to do a round trip from coast to coast. In the way you sumed it all up has made this trip a little easy to swallow. And so again, thanks!!
No problem, glad I could help. Enjoy your trip!
Thanks for the video im planning on taking the grayhound in a few month for the first time alone kinda nervous
I'm scared I'm going August first time to new York And your tips helped :) thanks
Glad my videos could be of some help. I'm sure you'll have a great trip.
I’m going on a 50 hour ride and I’ve never been on a bus like this lol this’ll be fun
I think sometimes the drivers keep the air cold to help them stay alert..as do some office buildings. Just bring a sweater or blanket. Me..i want my driver awake and alert.
Hand sanitizer is an essential too for toiletries.
Thank you for these helpful tips.
When I pack a suitcase or bag I do the ranger roll packing to save space and hold more stuff.
I ranger roll, than pack tightly into a gallon size ziplock bag and kneel in it to get the air out. It makes a MASSIVE difference in space saved.
I know you recommend the ear plugs and the sleep mask and such but my greatest concern in taking Greyhound is sleeping. How far back can the seats go? Are they comfortable? Should I bring a pillow? Should I take tranquilizers? How difficult is it to sleep on a bus?
The seats don't recline that far back. And I wouldn't call them comfortable but if you are tired enough you can get some sleep. Some people bring pillows, I don't because then it's just more stuff I have to keep up with. Some people sleep like babies on the bus, some people can't sleep at all. It kinda just depends on the person and how well they can sleep on a bus crowded with strangers. I usually can nod off for a an hour or so but I never sleep that good on the bus. Haven't tried tranquilizers though lol. My only concern there would be that you would take them and fall into too deep a sleep and then miss your next stop or something like that.
Have you been on a Greyhound bus that has broken down in the middle of your trip? What happens? Love your videos. Keep up the good work.
First off, thanks for the compliment, I really appreciate it. Secondly, I have been on a bus that broke down in the middle of my trip. However, even though it was a Greyhound trip, full disclosure it was on a segment of the trip that Jefferson Lines (a Greyhound partner) handles so it technically wasn't a Greyhound bus. However, I assume the experience would have been about the same if it was a Greyhound bus.
Basically, the driver had to pull the bus over a few times because it wasn't running right. We stopped on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere in Wyoming twice for about 5 minutes each time while he checked the bus out. Finally, we pulled into a gas station where we had a scheduled stop and the driver informed us that a mechanic was on the way to look at the bus. We waited like 30 mins for the mechanic to show up and then another 30 mins while he worked on the bus. He couldn't fix the issue so they sent a new bus to pick us up which took another 30 mins or so to arrive.
All in all we sat there for 1 1/2 hours. This put us way behind schedule but fortunately for me I had a 4 hour layover at our next stop so it didn't effect my trip. I think some of the other passengers missed their connecting buses and did have to wait for later buses to continue on their trips.
Buses do break down and when they do it can be a hassle but I know Greyhound tries it's best to get passengers back on the road and to their destinations asap. But there is always the possibility of missing your next connection if a bus breaks down. It's just part of the business. Thankfully Greyhound will change your ticket to the next bus for free if you miss a connection due to an issue on their end.
Thank you Tim for the info.
Thanks going on greyhound Australia for 2 days from Adelaide to cairns
Dear Tim,--Really GREAT advice. You could have people bring along a journal [--although it might be hard to write if the bus is bouncing around ] Elderly/infirm might bring "Pedia-lyte" to boost electrolytes if they've recently used the bus bathroom and thrown-up;)
Good tip lol!
Is it "OK" to tip the driver before & after for "looking out for you", and if so, what's appropriate?
I travel from Vancouver, BC to Prince George, BC
6:50 😂😂
I'm taking a book, a notebook and that's it for entertainment after music. I get motion sickness after a few hours so you should always take that into account if that's you too. after a 14 hour trip from Michigan to florida, I stepped out of the truck and puked all over. holding it in after Illinois lmao.
Hi! Glad I found your channel, it's really helpful. I was hoping you could give me your opinion on my situation. The trip I'm looking at is about a day and 50 minutes long. I'm 19 and want to bring my 13 year old brother along with me. Do you think we'd do okay with the transfers and possible layovers? I've flown alone before, but my mom still doesn't like the idea at all. What's your experience with seeing young people take a bus by themselves?
I've actually seen lots young people on the bus by themselves. If you and your brother just follow some common sense safety tips I think you would be ok. I've noticed too that a lot of times fellow passengers will look out for younger passengers and make sure they are ok and have no trouble on the bus or at layovers. I can certainly understand your mother's concern, there is always the possibility that something can happen and riding Greyhound is a totally different experience than flying in terms of security, but I believe 99% of the time people arrive at there destinations unharmed.
I’m 15 and I’m going on a 22 hour trip from Austin Texas to Sacramento CA. I’m so nervous 😩
this is my first trip ever on a grey hound. im really nervous and i will be traveling alone. any suggestions
I'd take body spray wet wipes bio degradeable torlit paper because you never know how often it's restocked on bus.
Tim can you do a storytime
Sure, I was just actually thinking about doing one lol
+GreyhoundGURU Lol Tim make it a good one
+GreyhoundGURU Hey Guru I've got a question or 2 for you. I'm going to buy a ticket in 2 weeks for a trip and my question is...when i purchase my ticket do you think that its smarter to buy a round trip or just a one way? Considering ill be coming home in a month should i buy the one way there and buy another one way back? Is it cheaper that way or? Its my first time. Also do we as customers get to pick the day we leave??? Please reply thank you ps ive found your videos very informational for a 1st time greyhound customer. you hace answered most of my questions i had and for that i say thank you sir.
a change of clothing
Annette Melnychuk Good time to take old clothing and undies, use undies to wash up, small spray bottle of white vinegar. Cover back pack with black garbage bag, when sitting under your seat, because spills are running up and down the aisle. Toss the old clothing and put on fresh old clothing. Great decluttering system. 😊❤️💯🇺🇸📚✈️
Good stuff man!!!
Thanks!
I always say bring liquor or beer and sit in the back so you can play music on the speaker then start arguing and yelling around with the other passengers and when your done start arguing and yelling at the driver until he pulls over and inconveniences everyone and plus their trying to sleep so it’s even funnier and you can bring your friends so you can argue amongst each other THEN when everyone wakes up it’s time to go to sleep
Going from Melbourne, FL to Tacoma, WA first time ever taking any kind of public transportation, leaving this evening at 4, so freaking nervous
Don't be nervous. After you get on the first bus and get settled in you will calm down considerably. I'm sure you won't have any issues. That sounds like a pretty long trip btw. You'll get to see alot of the country!
This was a great video to watch. I just wanted to know if anything changed, I have taken a Greyhound before but it was about three years ago. I know the company has new buses but that was about it. I am taking a trip next month to Richmond VA so I am about four hours away from my destination. Thanks this really helped
You are awesome.
Hi tim. Have you travel on greyhound doing the holidays?
Yes, I have. It's always busier during the holiday season but overall the experience wasn't much different then non holiday trips.
+GreyhoundGURU Thank you
Can you please do one handicap people who travel on greyhound.
Wish I could but I don't have any experience with the topic. I wouldn't want to give out the wrong information, especially on a subject as important as that.
@@fundyourlifestyle I'm handicap travel on greyhound allot there's times I do get confused what to do and wear too go at greyhound terminals. I buy a ticket on my cellphone and said I am handicap and have problems with my memory and have to focus what to do at a greyhound bus station.
Hello Tim: I am a photographer working on a project that involves Greyhound. I would like your input - How can I contact you?
I got your message on Facebook today and replied. Look forward to hearing from you!
When is the best time to record your trip? Going to go cross country on greyhound for the first time so i want to record everything possible with my gopros. Thanks!
what can you do if you're on a break but you don't smoke? do you stay on the bus...?
Going from WA to AZ will be no fun
So there is the suitcase under the bus and the carry on bag in the overhead, then are you aloud to bring a smaller bag such as a purse? For girls do you think they will bother telling you you can't have it ?
Yeah you can bring a purse or a smaller bag too. Greyhound is pretty chill when it comes to carry on bags. As long as you can fit it in the overhead bin or under your seat you should be ok.
Hi, I was wondering two things. First, if you Add a return. Date when paying online is the payment going to be included for both when you go and when you come back? Also . do you have to use an I'd or can you a school Id?
When you get to checkout it will bill you for both trips, coming and going. I believe you have to have a government issued ID but don't hold me to that. You might be able to use other forms of picture ID. I would call your local station and ask.
+GreyhoundGURU thank you!!
GreyhoundGURU really they didn't even ask me for id give them passcode get ticket show bus driver and get on from new york to pbi
GreyhoundGURU bit then not sure because you a kid minor and not an adult
well tim, I'm gonna be going on a trip to mexico from florida but I'm somewhat scared I'm only 14. I don't have a passport but i have my birth certificate. Im most scared of the cops & border patrol i feel as i will get so tense and scared and idk do you have any tips?
So I heard from your video about stay clean on greyhound and my question about it is this what if you're a bus station and you have a layover or if you transferring to another bus and you started to feel stinky and you want to wash up at the bathroom. Is it safe.
It depends on the station. I've been to some stations where I felt super safe and had no problem going into the bathroom and washing up. Then there were other stations where the bathroom was full of super sketchy people and I didn't feel safe. You just have to take it on a location by location basis.
TAKE ALSO A POOP SPRAY BOTTLE WITH YOU ITS ABOUT .99 CENTS I GOT MINE AT HOME DEPO OF ALL PLACES ALSO BABY WIPES AND HAND SANITIZR ALL IN SMALL CONVENIENT SIZES I GET ALL MY STUFF AT DOLLAR TREE
I love Dollar Tree! I buy snacks and stuff from there all the time.
I have an 18.5" x 13.5" x 8.5" back pack I'd like to take on my trip. Can this fit in the Greyhound overhead bin?
I think so. I've taken a pretty big backpack that was jammed full on the Greyhound before and I managed to cram it into the overhead bin.
There are duffle bags with wheels
where's the vids man I'm been waiting lol
Sorry I've been too busy to make videos lately. What video did you request?
GreyhoundGURU like a story you had on greyhound
hi I'm 17 and i will be taking the bus from south Texas to Arkansas by myself any tips? also do you have to get off at the bus stops ?
It depends, at most of the stops you can stay on the bus, but there will be some times when the bus will stop at a station to be cleaned and everyone will have to get off the bus. If you are looking for some tips check out some of my other videos I cover alot of what to expect on a Greyhound trip : goo.gl/gBmTgz
y first trip is in a few days im terrified
I'm sure you will have a pleasant trip! Just follow the tips in my videos and you should be ok lol.
What about bathrooms in the Greyhound Stations. Are there clean?
It depends on the station really. Some of the bathrooms at Greyhound stations are clean and some of them are really dirty. I think it depends on the management at each station and the type of people that frequent the station. I usually expect to find a dirty bathroom so it's always a pleasant surprise when I find clean ones lol
can you use a 55 or 60 L backpack as a carry on? What are the dimensions of a carry on for greyhound?
Greyhound doesn't quote any specific dimensions. However I've taken a 48L backpack on the bus and I had to do some pushing and shoving but I got it to fit in the overhead rack. Here's a link to the backpack I used so you can get an idea of it's size: amzn.to/2pTi4xi
Excellent! Then I will take my 55L and only half ill it and crumple, cram, shove and bend it until it is flush with the bin and also bring my 30L for the electronic things I want plus water and some sort of food bits. Thank you! Love the vid's.
Loquetus
I have a question, do you think if I were to fit clothes and everything else I need in just a carry on they'd charge me? I'm not sure if it'd go over in weight and I really don't want to check in baggage, i just want to keep all my belongings im taking on the trip with me in my space
Jazmine yooo Great idea. I usually just take a carry on. Much easier than dealing with a suitcase, especially with transfers.
hey can you make a video or a reply explaining what to expect when you cross or about to cross states what should I expect from border patrol agents
I've actually never rode the Greyhound across the border but I'll do some research and see if I can come up with some answers for you.
+GreyhoundGURU thanks
I bought those tiny suitcase locks, do they allow that? Or do they think that's strange? First time traveler and leaving in two days. An hour and a half trip.
I use luggage locks every time I ride Greyhound. They are allowed. Trust me there are WAY stranger things on the Greyhound bus lol
GreyhoundGURU thanks for the tip! One last question, is there a metal detector? I hate taking out my facial jewelry!
No, there are no metal detectors at Greyhound bus stations.
Do you have to retrieve and recheck luggage for every exchange?
You have to retrieve your luggage when you are transfer buses. Every now and then you might come across a station where they move your bags over for you but in my experience you are responsible for getting your bags from one bus to the next. You don't have to recheck your bags though. They will be labelled with your final destination.
Going on greyhound tomorrow and I have a question
Do you still have a question? I'll try my best to answer.
i have a question. so after i buy my ticket, and print it out. where do i go? is grey hound like city bus where you just go to a busstop and get on or do i go to a greyhound like station or whatever and theyll intruct me what to do.
Each city has either a greyhound bus station or a designated greyhound pickup spot that will be listed on the greyhound website. I think your departing station also shows up on your ticket confirmation.
Hey tim i just bought my ticket online and i have a couple questions is there any other fees when i arrive at the stations? And also how reliable is buying a ticket online? Like will anything happen to the order i have placed? Please reply thanks
The only other fees you might have to pay will be baggage fees if your bag is overweight or if you have more than 1 checked bag. I always buy my tickets online and I've never had any problems. I just go to the counter and give them my confirmation number and my ID and they print me my ticket. Greyhound's computer system is pretty good so I wouldn't worry about anything happening to your order. Just make sure you hold on to your order confirmation email.
+GreyhoundGURU ok thanks but i dont have a valid email i used someone elses so i dont have access to the confirmation email. Is the email just to verify my purchase if my tickets were to get lost? Or is the email mandatory?
+GreyhoundGURU i may be lacking a few details i apologize ive never done this b4. Ok i printed my ticket at another persons house and used their email so do you think i should discard the tickets i printed, get the confirmation number and have the station print it up or should i keep my tickets i printed?
Is there a bus schedule? like if you buy your ticket on this day, will you go on that day, the day you schedule your ticket on?
Like for example the airport
Yes, when your are buying your ticket you will have to select the date you are travelling. Your ticket will only be valid for that day and the route you selected. It's pretty much just like buying a plane ticket.
I'm very nervous for my first 7 hour trip any advice?
7 hours won't be that bad. Just bring along something to keep you busy and your mind occupied.
Do you have a way to charge your cell phone on the bus
They have outlets.
Yes, there are power outlets. Most of the time they work lol
what happens if you miss your bus because previous one breaks down?
You have to take the next bus that is traveling on that route. Go to the ticket counter and get your ticket reprinted for the later bus. Don't let them charge you the $20 fee. If you missed your bus due to a Greyhound issue they should reissue your ticket for free.
GreyhoundGURU
All right, I'm just super nervous about it Being packed, how full is a bus on average? I'll be going from Tennessee to Texas. I have PTSD, legally disabled now, and have a service dog. How much trouble would I have because of him? I know by law they can't reject me/him but Even here most places make a fuss about him because of the fake 'service dog' bullsh*t
I've seen a number of people bring service dogs on the Greyhound bus and there was no issue with any of the bus staff. Some of the passengers were a little nervous since they were big dogs and some people are afraid of dogs but the trip went smoothly. As far as fullness of buses it depends on when and where you are travelling. I would imagine that on a trip from Tennessee to Texas that the buses will probably be pretty full because the Southeast and South are pretty busy regions. But I've taken trips through those states and while the buses were packed there was never any overbooking and everyone got a seat.
can I charge my phone on the greyhound bus?
Yes, the buses have power outlets. But keep in mind that half of the time they don't work.
How good is the wifi? I noticed you mention to download in your device instead of streaming.
The wifi is kind of hit and miss. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. And they block most streaming sites so you wont be able to stream videos. You can usually stream music though. I recommend downloading to your device any movies or videos you want to watch during your trip.
audiobooks.
Hand sanitizer
should you keep cash or no ?
If you are going to ride on Greyhound with cash I would recommend hiding the bulk of it somewhere on your person and never taking it out or using it until you get to your final destination. I usually on ride with like $20 on me for meals and things.
GreyhoundGURU thanks so u should purchase one of those wallets
If I have to take alot of cash with me I use a money belt usually.
deodorant
Yeah, I should have added that. Thanks
Don't forget to pack extra clothes and underwear
