    Back in the 1970's thru the 1980's, Greyhound station had those small black and white TV's you paid a quarter for 10 minutes. So that long layover wasn't that bad if you had a pocket full of quarters. My longest layover was in LA it was four hours. As for entertainment I had one of those Sony Walkman cassette player and lots of batteries. This was the spring if 1983.

    I spent a few long layovers in Indianapolis during the overnight hours. This was in the'80's. I came in on Illini-Swallow from Illinois and waited for my bus to Dayton.

    Be careful about nighttime layovers at stations that are totally closed! Bangor, Maine (small town) for one is so tiny it closed up totally after the last bus of the evenng when I was there in 2009. I am glad I had a hotel booked anyway in the winter on a Saturday night.

      Seems like Tim was saying... they're selling the physical stations for big time $$$ and picking up/dropping off at mass transit centers, truck stops, etc! They're providing less customer service and jacking prices up! As a single female, I get concerned about safety, weather, etc bc what am I to do if they cancel my connecting bus, for example! I'd either have to get a room or something but a lot of people riding Greyhound don't have $70-$100 for a nights hotel stay! Smh
      Lastly...I wish they'd bring back the Discovery Pass! I was more laid back when things would go wrong since the passes were such a good deal than I am now when I am paying $200+ to go 1 way cross country!

    Recently went from Chicago back home to Philly. Had a 4ish hour unexpected layover in Pittsburgh for a staffing issue after 11pm that wasn't mentioned until we entered PA. They told us to be back by 2am and to not expect re-boarding before 2.30. We also had just the driver's outlet working the entire 22+hr way and a very full bus was taking turns with 3 outlets. Texted a lifelong friend I hadn't seen in a while thanks to Covid, who had just moved there before lockdowns. Wanted to grab a drink and joint so the 300 miles home would suck less. Rarely end up in Pittsburgh, so it was kind of an ok surprise. Neither of us currently drive, so I decided to walk. I know very little about Pittsburgh and honestly never leave layover stations. Don't recommend it, but I was sleep deprived and where I live has made me indifferent to a lot of things. My perception of the level of sketchiness of a neighborhood is very skewed, as I learned from many at the conference I had just been at from some of the small towns.
    Meanwhile, I forgot I was wearing a Flyers hat by that point since I definitely hadn't slept much in a week. Didn't even make it out of the station before the yinzers had some choice words. 😂 Needless to say, that was an adventure. Keep in mind the places your layover is in and know their level of violence towards their rival sportsball teams and dress accordingly?
    Surprisingly, I got home about an hour earlier than expected despite the layover because the driver was beyond ready to be back in NYC and the scheduled layover in Harrisburg was turned into a smoke break stop. Other stops were skipped entirely. He was _flooring_ it through vast sections of highway/creative back roads definitely not on the official route and weaving in and out of the limited overnight traffic. I also ate my last tab of acid at some point, so I was quite the relaxing couple of hours across this beautiful commonwealth.
    Another successful and unforgettable Greyhound thrill ride. 😅 The unpredictability is honestly most of the fun. Buying a Greyhound ticket is like playing roulette but with a wtf story coming out of it every time that hopefully becomes a nice laugh eventually. Everyone should experience it even once. Definitely worth the amusement.

    I like watching people make a big deal about a very minor issue. It's a hoot to watch someone freak out over a hour layover or someone getting bent out of shape because the vending machine ate their dollar. Heck it's a dollar get over it. I take my trip expecting a vending machine along the line eating a dollar or two. If it doesn't happen I consider it lucky.

    From Miami to Chicago you change buses in Atlanta. and you are only there for an hour. I couldn't handle an 8 hour layover. Greyhound also has a really bad habit of overselling buses.

    In a previous video, I wrote of my horrible overnight layovers in Buffalo, NY. Back in the early through mid 2000s, I would travel by bus to and from Toronto and Portland, ME 6 times a year; I was studying at the University of Toronto at the time and I'd go visit my parents in ME for Winter Break, at the beginning of and at the end of Summer Break); and no matter when I left Toronto -- whether in the morning, noon, afternoon, or evening -- I would inevitably get stuck in an overnight layover at the Buffalo Greyhound bus station. That place is horrible -- no food options other than vending machines and it is in a dead part of the city with absolutely nothing to do in it or around it. I actually tried to order a pizza to be delivered to me there a few times, but no matter which pizza place I tried to order from, they refused to deliver there, and, it wasn't in a bad part of of town; as I said, it was in a dead part of town. How I hated those overnight layovers there.

    • @christopherhayes5238
      @christopherhayes5238 2 роки тому

      Said trip would go from Toronto to Buffalo (with a bus change/inevitable overnight layover there) then go through the entire length of "upstate" NY and MA with a second bus change/layover at Boston South Station (which was never more than a couple hours and there was a Dunkin' Donuts, McDonalds, and small convenience store there) and then up to Portland.

    • @christopherhayes5238
      @christopherhayes5238 2 роки тому

      At the Buffalo Greyhound station, there were nothing but hard plastic chairs to sit in and only small black-and-white televisions attached to said chairs that you had to pay for, and most of them didn't even work! I really don't know why they made that Greyhound station so horrible and boring! That place needs better customer service amenities... at least some basic customer service amenities! And the worst thing is there was nothing to do in the whole area around it, like a restaurant or coffee shop or something!. Argh! I haven't been back there since mid-August 2008, so maybe it has changed, but that is the way it was whenever I travelled through the place from 2002 until mid-August 2008.

    Are there luggage lockers at the Greyhound stations? Like in major European train stations? In countries like Germany and Holland, railway stations are often located in the heart of the city, so if you have a layover of a couple of hours, you can do some sightseeing.

    Hey Tim!! I love your videos, they're so helpful and I'm going to use the Greyhound on my trip to New York! I have a few questions, sorry if you've answered them before.
    1) Are we allowed to talk on the bus? I don't know, I've always assumed it's like a quiet zone sort of situation but then I saw your story times haha
    2) They weigh our luggage on the way to the destination but do they weigh it again on the way back? I was planning on going shopping but now I'm worried about going over the 25 and 50lb limit.
    Thank you so much!

    • @fundyourlifestyle
      @fundyourlifestyle  7 років тому +3

      Thanks! In answer to your questions (1) You can definitely talk on the bus. That's the #1 pastime on a Greyhound bus trip lol. (2) On your return trip you will have to check any checked bags again and they will probably weigh them then. I wouldn't worry to much about the carry-on bag being weighed though, doesn't happen much.

    Hi Guru,
    I will be taking a trip via greyhound from Minnesota to LA. I have a 2 hr layover. I was told by my uncle that is a greyhound fan that a 2hr layover can end up being much longer than that. As the bus will come in late. Have you ever had issue with no wifi on a bus or a bus breaking down on you?

    • @fundyourlifestyle
      @fundyourlifestyle  7 років тому +1

      Yes to both questions lol. I have been on quite a few buses where the wifi did not work, it's kind of a recurring problem on buses. And I have had a couple buses break down on me. It's just part of bus travel. You pray it doesn't happen to you but when it does you just have to deal with it. And you uncle is right layovers can go over the scheduled time because of late buses, that happens alot.

  • @IvyANguyen
    @IvyANguyen 7 років тому +1

    One problem I have had with the booking system is not all journeys are shown, due to layovers. For instance, I find it hard to believe that it is possible to get to Myrtle Beach from Philly only ONCE, when 2 layovers on the journey exist. I'd imagine that departures from each city exist all day. How does the scheduling usually work? Might it be better to book longer trips as separate journeys?

      Phylisha Sheldon That is a real issue. You might be able to stay inside locked station or probably, stay outside. A real good idea is to check what kind of stop it is, what time the station closes etc. Having money for a Uber/taxi and a hotel is a really good idea on a long trip.

      if you had a long layover there about a block away is a Holiday Inn with a decent restaurant sunnys for breakfast and some Italian named pizza joint instead of eating at the tomaine grill of Greyhound Chicago Food service . Also Clinton L stop is in front of the hotel that can take you to O hare and back 45 minutes to a hour each way to pass time .
