I am a retired greyhound driver. Put in 35 years. You did a good job on tips. Baggage-you should have a large colorful ID tag showing your name address and your current destination. Those tags greyhound supplies get ripped off sometimes. Also-put a large note inside the bag with the same. Put a bright ribbon/ object on the bag to help identify it. Last but not least take a series of pictures of your baggage so in case it gets lost you will have an accurate picture to show customer service if your bag turns up missing. Some stations have short layover times and the baggage loader might be new, doesn't know geography or is just lazy. Personally make sure your bag has been loaded to your new transfer schedule.

@Dana Dana ya Atlanta is a shit hole. However I have to go via Atlanta. However I know what to be expecting. 1st off as Tim here mentioned know your itinerary and 2nd good chance that 80% of the people you have been riding with live in Atlanta. Is why they're going to Atlanta. So your next bus you're likely to meet new people. And 3rd well me personally I've helped thoes confused ( slightly mentally slow) people get onto the next bus. Guess all stations in general my personal experience Atlanta and Chicago in most recent times but in general I've met some people whom are I believe a tad ( mentally slow) I am not saying this to make fun or be an asshole. People if you talk to then for like 10 minutes you catch on to the fact ( I think he/she has a slightly mental impatient) if you can help them. Do so. As I do. Especially in a place like Atlanta.. they oftentimes don't fully understand thier itinerary because of thier problems. So assist if you can

This girl was well she said 20. Looked to be about 15 or 16. And had the mental functioning of I'd say 8-12 years old. As she was going from Nebraska to her sister's house around Nashville. We met up in Chicago. She had no luggage beyond a plastic grocerie bag with 2 shirts and a few paris of socks. No money no phone. ( as gues who she found to let her use thier phone?) Ya me. We got held up in Indianapolis. Oh and being a male I'm not going to think when another lady intervened rendering assistance whispered in my ear ( she's in the ladies room begging for tampons) oh dear. I gave her $10 and bought her dinner. Problem was short story she refused to get on the bus in Indianapolis when a bus showed up. We can't make her get onto the bus because she is a legal adult. However myself and the other lady did meet her sister in Nashville. As also I reported to her sister ( she's refuing to return to you) sad situation. As we do what we can to try to help. I defiantly agree on the appearance aspect of riding on the Greyhound. The first trip I took I was constantly asked by people for money, I wasn't dressed up at all but I didn't dress myself down either. While I'm not exactly a high risk target for robbery because of my size, these interactions become tedious very quickly. I would say just dress very comfortable, some baggy sweats and a loose fitting hoodie. It makes you become less of a target and will also help out with the cold climate of the buses. Great videos friend. Very informative.

Back in 2016 I took a Greyhound from Indianapolis to Tampa and I stopped at the station in Birmingham AL, it was about 4AM or so and I was hungry and didn't feel like grabbing anything from the vending machines in the station and there was a gas station down the way and I was feeling a slice of gas station pizza or something, so I leave the station and after a few moments, I realized there was a dude following me. I immedately made a few turns and made it back to the station.
When it's late at night, do NOT leave the station unless you're with friends. It's an easy way to get mugged or kidnapped.

I ride Greyhound alone all the time (actually have 2am to catch to Baltimore in a few hours) and my main tip, based on experience, would be: know what weed smells like so you don't go up and tell the driver and everyone within listening distance "it smells like the engine is on fire" and make him go out and check in the middle of nowhere and delay your trip another hour when it's just someone smoking up in what Greyhound considers a "bathroom."

A lot of smaller towns don't have a bus station, only a designated area where the bus is to stop and make pick-ups/ drop-offs. This leaves you standing around outside in bad weather and there will be other people hanging around who may or may not be waiting for a bus. One o'clock or two o'clock in the morning? This ain't good.

    • @carlgharis7948
      @carlgharis7948 2 роки тому

True but at least in a small town you aren't as likely to run into sketchy people. I mean okay the bus stops in St. George Utah. The bud station is a Texaco station that sells bus tickets. We had a break. 2 people got off. I assume the lived thier. Why would you get off of a bus in St. George Utah if your house isn't around?

All your tips are very useful for first time traveler on Greyhound. I travel alone all the time from Boston to Miami since 1970's. I enjoy the sight see and encounter many commotion inside the bus terminals and inside the bus.
Remember one thing, make sure all your pants and jacket come with zipper pockets to protect your money or I.D.

Excellent advice guy, although I mentioned this on another one of your vids I rode the hound all over the country as I used to deliver vans and motorhomes and it was, in most cases the only way I could get home. From your video's it sounds like things are much worse now (if that's possible) At that time they still let people smoke on the bus so I always made it a point to sit as close to the front of the bus as I could. (no smoking up there and better air circulation) I guess one tip I would add is DON'T TALK TO PEOPLE in the bus station that try to strike up a conversation with you. They may be working a scam. On a couple of occasions I almost fell for scammers trying to sell me something or get me outside. Finally, I wish I could share with you all my stories and experiences but that would require a book. Even though I haven't ridden the bus in years, your videos were simply great, thanks a lot.

    • @sonnyroy497

So write a book, a kinda biographical novel, a nice mix of fact and fiction. You might not remember every single incident that you experienced and that's where the 'novel' part helps out, it gives you wiggle room. If it was interesting enough I'd buy it. I would love to travel, don't have the $$$, so I read a lot. Anywho....give it some thought. G'day mate.

It's amazing that Greyhound cares nothing about the companies reputation or their nasty stations, the bad people who hang around the station. The security guards use to chase them out. In Columbus the police had so many calls there, they were getting ready to shut it down. Greyhound came to some agreement to hire security outside the station along with cameras and better lighting. I think a guard will have to be posted at the entrance now. It took a shooting there since its located downtown near all the new fancy expensive high rise condos and apartment for them to finally do something. Bad bus stations Like the one in my city with alot of police calls should be deemed a nuisance and shut down since greyhounds doesn't believe or care about passenger safety. One time I was leaving Marietta Ga. I was catching a late bus. Hell the little terminal was closed and I had to sit in my daughter's car until the bus showed up. There was one lone female waiting by the door, we offered her to wait with us in the car, it was dark and no one from the main street could see the back of that terminal. Than from there it stopped at the downtown Atlanta station which was packed but okay at least I was inside. It would be wonderful if someone purchased Greyhound and bring it back to the way it use to be years ago ( wishful thinking I know). Also some of the drivers can be rude as hell from being tired from driving.

I was curious and tried Greyhound for a one-way trip from Los Angeles to San Diego. Upon pulling out of the LA station, we experienced transmission problems. We made it about 50 miles south of LA before the driver kicked us all off at about 10:30 pm. At 2:30 a.m., a bus coming out of another city picked up 10 of us. (I was one of the 10) This left a large number of people left behind waiting for other busses. I was so shocked by the experience I will never go Greyhound!

THIS IS FOR UK AND EUROPE COACH TRAVEL - People say it's awful and takes to long on the bus but even though I could pay upto £200 or more for a 1 to 3 hour flight I cant justify it when I can travel the same distance for £12! I can get from Scotland to Paris for less than £40! And from Paris I can got to any European city and even Moscow for still less than €100! Sure its extra time but a big plus is amazing views! You can see beautiful things on a bus that you dont get with a plane and you just walk on and off without all that airport fuss! If you bring the right things in your carry on you can make it a comfortable journey with plenty to entertain yourself and you even get little stops for a leg stretch. I will never fly a distance I could reasonably bus or train!

@@fobbitguy well the way flights get delayed these days I've found ironically Greyhound is not that much slower at times. Sapose to be home in 3 hours. Well ends up being over 30. And Greyhound only 6 hours behind. Ironic. And also you have to take into account if you want the cheapest flights let's say Chicago to Miami. You'll set in the new York airport for 20 hours. Not because it's delayed but because that's the schedule. Or you can take greyhound and be in Miami only 10 hours afterwards. I mean if you want a direct flight it's oftentimes 3 x the price. Now let's say you're going all the way across the U.S. San Francisco to Miami. You might get a flight that's only $50 more then greyhound. But they'll oftentimes make you wait in Dallas for a connecting flight for say 15+ hours. Ya you'll likely cut that time in 1/2.. However if you're in no hurry riding a greyhound all the way across the U.S. isn't so bad. You'll get thier in 4 days

While the rail station and suroounding grounds are pretty much clear, the area surrounding the old Greyhound station (closed and no longer in use) where the city transit and LRT stops are, is pretty much within a "tent village" where there is lots of trash strewn about.

Traveling from Miami to Kansas City, at Memphis, I was routed through St Louis, when I got there. Memphis was a stop, where the terminal people move your bag to the next bus. They had routed my bag through Little Rock, which gets in hours later. I only knew about it, when I remembered the Memphis station. There were multiple doors out to the buses. Each had the name of a city above the door. I just happened to remember the door saying "Little Rock." When I got to KC, I noticed a bus due in from Little Rock. There was my bag. 10 hours, after I got to KC. There had been a wreck, north of Little Rock. Bus was stopped in traffic for several hours.

Hahaha! Thanks for the wonderful video I have experienced everything you have said, but my slant is all of those things are what makes bus travel fun. I am sixty-two years old, six feet four, with a Mohawk haircut and bomber jacket, so I look like a crazy and it works out well. Also, I don't mind waiting. I always schedule so I have a day or two leeway on when I have to be someplace. The reason I travel is the experience. Why be in a hurry? The journey is the fun part as well as the people. You were absolutely dead on with your advice, even though I laughed my ass off the whole time thinking of my past trips. Thanks.

If anything just be there atleast 10 minutes before departure, because when I got picked up in San Fernando which is a small station, it was closed and the driver wasn't there until it was time to go and we left right away.

They offer e-tickets which made my travel easy. One time in the 90's rode Greyhound Spokane WA to Boston. A passenger became a bit unruly and speaking incoherently. That would have been no biggie, but someone noticed in the dark night that he had a large knife in his hand. Of course nobody wanted to confront him, but the driver was made aware and contacted the cops. A few miles down the road near Erie PA driver pulled over opened the door and two police came aboard and took the man into custody without further problems. For the tens of thousands of miles I've rode buses that was the only occasion something like that happened.

I've been riding since the 90s as a kid. Back then we had a calling card to use the payphone. Who still uses them? The Amish. The greyhound station is in many cities like Chicago yes they still have working payphones. And it's worth mentioning some routes are frequented by the Amish. Have you ever riden with a group of Amish Tim? Even they know you can't take the horse 50 miles these days. I've seen periodically 15/20 Amish people get on and they'll ride. Sometimes only 2 stops. Other times many stops. They've oftentimes transfered in Chicago. So of course they'll use the payphone. Even they have somebody around thier destination to call and say ( hey we're in Chicago we're getting on our next bus in an hour be thier in the morning) and it's a reminder we all use to do that.
