**** sured by BMW since 1972. It is the successor to the New Class Sedans and is currently in its seventh generation.
Initially, the 5 Series was only available in a sedan body style. The wagon/estate body style (called "Touring") was added in 1991 and the 5-door fastback (called "Gran Turismo") was produced from 2009 to 2017.
The first generation of 5 Series was powered by naturally aspirated four-cylinder and six-cylinder petrol engines. Following generations have been powered by four-cylinder, six-cylinder, V8 and V10 engines that are either naturally aspirated or turbocharged. Since 1982, diesel engines have been included in the 5 Series range.
The 5 Series is BMW's second best-selling model after the 3 Series.[1] On January 29, 2008, the 5 millionth 5 Series was manufactured, a 530d sedan in Carbon Black Metallic.[2]
BMW's three-digit model naming convention began with the first 5 Series,[3] thus the 5 Series was BMW's first model line to use "Series" in the name.

E39 is legendary forever
Am I the only one who hates the fact that the speedo on the 2019 car isn't linear?
It looks like c*ap. Pretty much in linw with BMW quakity these days, tho.
Yeah the e39 tacho scale rpm to speed relation was just perfect.
530 D M57 😊
Older BMW's were built for men and last forever. Newer one's are eye candy. No substance in it. Built for facebook and instagrammers.
Well spoken, bro! ☺👍
Completely false assumption. You clearly have no idea what you're talking about.
Give the old 530d new transmission and it will laugh at the new car. That makes all the difference.
@@ij2759 sure, the power delivery of the bigger engine is wastly better, but the gearbox makes the difference here as both engines are practically same as far as power output is.
lighter rims better tires
Bullshit. 190hp is 190hp... You cant do more work in the same time if the figures say 190hp...
@@heavyweight6440 Do you know the term "powerloss"?
@@misobezdan5217 Yeah so? You could change the oil of the AT-transmission, but that wont give you more power. It will maybe give you faster shift timings but thats it.
The differences in gearboxes is way more important than its age. The gearbox in the 530d is a 5 speed AT gearbox and the 520d has a 8 speed AT gearbox. Even IF you would change the gearbox of the 530d it wont produce more power... also the 530d as 10Nm more Torque AND 3hp more (which is important for high speeds). Depending on equipment the 520d might be slightly heavier...
We dont even know how many kilometers both engine have run... only because the 530d is almost 20 years old, it doesnt necessarily mean that it has run more than 200.000km. It can even be less than 150.000km so there isnt really powerloss.
So in the end - the results are fine and compareable. It has nothing to do with powerloss, lol.
e39 is the most beautiful BMW ever to exist. This the car BMW reached their peak in terms of design and style.
Im sorry but I strongly dissagree.
The e46 was the upmost beatifull car to date. If we talk 5 series its the e34
Boost 530d 1.35bar
Boost 520d 2.00bar
Old 3.0 is faster, new 2.0 is quicker from the line, but old is much tougher and can be tuned easily with bigger turbo and better pump. There is no replacement for displacement.
Its all about 5-gearbox vs 8-gearbox
Also old 3.0 can survive chip tune, bigger turbo, injectors etc for years, new 2.0 dies early being stock, it's sad to see how bad the durability is on new cars

520 fighting for his life from 180 on
That's because of smaller engine and bigger turbo. Power of turbo falls off at higher rpm
@@Introgamer14 the "bigger turbo"part is wrong though. It's the programming or setup itself (i don't know if the turbo is really bigger or not than in the old m57. I mean that big turbos pull easily until the very end. Small turbos tend to lose breath at top end.)
@@WymiataczPlays yeah, but in the end, the bigger displacement on the 530 helps at high speed and rpm, as the range of torque is advanced. But when you watch turbo dynos, the power always falls off harder than NA or supercharged.
And obviously a bigger turbo increases that effect. Still comes down to the software setup tho, your right at that point, but software always is the last optimization step
@@Introgamer14 A bigger turbo engine does not die up top, it improves high RPM performance but with the downsize increasing turbo lag and worse response. A smaller turbo does choke the engine at high RPM's thus reducing power, but it responses earlier in the rev range.
530d has better torque, so can keep it up for longer
Even this old engine with the new ZF8HP transmission would be much faster. In the new engine, the transmission does the job.

Different engines all together though with different markets. Compare a 520D from 2001 to the 520D from 2020. 2001 520D - 136hp and 36mpg, 2020 520D - 190hp and 61mpg. There's your progress. Not to mention the luxury you get as standard in the 2020 520D.
BMW 530d E60 M57 218hp and 231 destroy all
i’d rather have a old 530d than a new 520d
...event though it is lighter .has the same power and torque figures from a smaller engine with 2 cylinders short and more advanced transmission the 530d still holds up wonderful with silky smooth acceleration ..probably because of healthy engine and overal mint condition.
So, in 2020 a 2.0 4 cyl 520d can keep up with a 3.0 6 cyl 530d...
THAT'S IMPRESSIVE!!!
Very good video
Thanks

So performance wise no need to replace my 2003 E39 530D manual. I hesitate buying newer BMWs, F10 530D or G30 530D, because of their unreliability. Chains, DPFs, electronics, possible longevity issues etc. E39 is pretty reliable and most of the problems I can fix myself. In fact, my E39 been extremely reliable within 250k km. The biggest issue so far, I had to replace the second fuel pump at 110k km. Still on OE turbo and injectors and OE suspension (it's getting noisy though). Rust is the biggest enemy of E39s but I was smart enough to have my car anti corrosion treated.
While I prefer the 6 cylinder sound older engine, it's amazing that a 2.0 is as fast as a 3 litre now. The advancement in engine technology is brilliant
Yes they do make more power but is it reliable power... I mean the more u take power per liter the unreliable it will be

all 2 litre diesel engines from bmw sound super weird even the new models. I own f30 3 litre and it's super quiet.
3.0d bmw has best 6 cyl engines!
2.0 is not powerful - it's the transmission that's quick and does not choke the power down.
Correct. It’s why Mercedes has a 9-speed gearbox in the 220d. And Ford a 10-speed in its 2.2 Ranger. Years ago 50cc racing bikes had 15 gear ratios. Manual too 😂.
@@kelvynmoore4882 more gears doesn't always mean faster though
@@paradox5556 It depends on what you mean by "faster". You need to be more specific in the definition. For example, V-Max (theoretical top speed) is ultimately limited by:
1. BHP
2. Gearing, specifically final drive (and differential) ratios
3. Drag coefficient
4. Mechanical drag (ie power lost through operating secondary mechanical systems from the engine)
So yes, mechanical gearing does play a part in Vmax, final drive ratio in particular. But it is not the only limiting factor as you correctly state. However in acceleration terms, gearing ratios and the amount of the available gears do play a much more significant part in the "faster" measurement. Gearing can compensate for relative lack of BHP, CoD and mechanical drag. So it can definitely make a vehicle "faster".

Crazy how far we have come in 19 years :) 4 cylinder beating 6 cyl.
E39 was faster from 100-200
Most people in the comments forget that the new one is much heavier than the old one
some HP were lost in that 530d :) still a solid and reliable engine if treated well.
With 8 gears (like 520D has) 530D will be quicker.
The e39 in the video is only the 184hp pre facelift version you can see it on the speedometer....
После 150 ти обьем выигрывает:)
They may have moved the technology forward but old bmw is an old bmw, sound comes directly from the engine bay and a nice one!
And today they want you to go into the authorized service shop with every bullshit that happens to your car.
No thank you.
Sticking with my ol'man :)
The older automatic gearbox is very good and reliable. Look how smooth it is. There is literally insignificant difference between the old and the new car in terms of performance. I would say that the older car is faster. E39 BMW is definetly one of the best cars ever made. They don't make them like they used to, that's for sure.
E39 with manual gearbox and the 2019 BMW 5-Series would be left behind.
Todays european cars are smalls 4 cylinder. There is a Renault Traffic van with 3 cylinder gasoline engine 999cc. Thats a motorcicle engine in a 2T car.

It seems that modern transmission and drive-train makes it faster from a start, I'm guessing the E39 is more aerodynamic at high speed as it catches up to the G30.

Not more aerodynamic, maybe a little but that didnt make it win in this case. Its 1000ccm more in the e39 and also 2 cylindrs more so that engine behaves much better from 150 + kph
