Zhang (and the Warlord era in general) reminds me of Yuan Shikai, who nobody talks about despite being probably the most cynical and power-hungry man in the first 20 years of the 20th century, and was widely reviled as a result.

Oh man, the mention of his foray into Siberia reminds me of the Zheltuga "republic", which was a proto-state made up of Chinese and Russians on the Amur river that was only independent because the Qing didn't notice its existence for three years in the 1880s. Also not to be confused with Jaxa, which was made up of Poles, Ukrainians, and local Indigenous peoples... in 1665.

The Northern Expedition was coordinated by Soviet Russia and participated by Kuomintang and Chinese Communist Party. Kuomintang itself was remodeled after the Bolsheviks before the expedition. So in essence, the Northern Expedition was a communist takeover, and the Chinese Nationalist cause merely acted as a white glove to the communist bloody hand.
