    Shin Kamen Rider never tried to be good, it only cared about being the rawest Kamen Rider experience possible.
    Watching this movie made me fall in love with the franchise once again.
    Everything that I loved about Black, Kuuga, W, and with some mental gymnastics, Build, was perfectly encapsulated in this movie.

    Another thing: Shin Kamen Rider embraces how silly and over the top superhero genre should be. They don't try to be tacticool like MCU superheroes movies
    If this was made by Marvel Studios, Kamen Rider wouldn't have "outdated" camera shots, Rider helmet don't have bug eyes, they will look like daft punk helmet, heck they will have magic called nano tech helmet. And for sure they won't give Riders a scarf.
    Like you said, it's basically a 70s design made with 2022 techs.

      This is why I want the Shin series to adapt more early Tokusatsu. Imagine them adapting JAKQ or Changeman, with their admittedly silly special attacks of "Garbage truck" and "literally just a bazooka".

      @@Ijustusethistocommentstuff Those would be fun. Unfortunately chances are slim because those would also be harder to market. And studios love making as much money as possible.
      Gamera is making a comeback maybe, so maybe Shin Gamera next?? I could also see them dropping the Shin from now on unless it’s Anno as the director, because that’s really the main reason why the Shin series exists.

    I disagree with people saying this is not a good movie. This is an EXCELLENT MOVIE. Because it doesn't try to copy MCU or DCEU movies, it tries (and succeed) in being itself. It pays homage to the '70s tv series, but also modernize the character, but not to be trendy or for "modern audiences", just tries to define how a person can be an hero. It's not costume, or the fighting sequences. Or the political stances. It's the actions. And consequences. And the doubts of a regular person for being an hero.

      @@ShinGlassman054 yes, i definitely prepared for something that was unexpected from Anno... Given how his previous Shin movies does catch me off guard... In a good way.
      Shin Kamen Rider has multiple layers of meaning and philosophy that i was never brought in such weight in the usual toku movies... It felt noirish in nature but still retain the toku flavor.. Like Blade Runner and Robocop, so many things to dissect and peeled everytime you watch it.
      Kinda like a gift that keeps on giving.

    Finally sat down and watched the 3 Shin movies. Shin Godzilla left me terrified n angry, Ultraman left me hopeful n eager for the future, and Kamen rider made me cry, but also cherish the past on a personal level. Altho Im relatively young, I grew up watching a lot of tokusatsu, and at some point sought out to watch the OG series. These 3 movies gave me an immense sense of nostalgia, they captured the essense of the original works perfectly, and then some more.
    And I have to say, Shin kamen rider is my favorite of the 3. To me, unlike sentais or ultraman, kamen rider has always been more abt, well, humans. Emotions, drive, hardship, pain, all under the cover of a masked hero saving the world in solitude, something that newer gens have forgotten. I fell in love w kamen rider again after watching this, and it left me hopeful for the future of the franchise

    Minus the confusing tunnel fight, yeah this is a great superhero film. Absolutely incredible. The closest thing we will ever get to a proper live action anime, in the best way possible. This thing is oozing with love and care. you can feel the passion pulsating out of the screen as you watch it. There is such a reverence and respect for everything that makes Tokusatsu and any masked hero-type series so enjoyable on display here that just thinking about it makes me smile. And yes, Hayato Ichimonji is easily the best thing in this movie.

    Because of BLACK SUN and Amazon, I admit my edgy self love them but always leave a hole in my heart, and I don't like and know what they are
    Shin however filled that gap, I finally realize what that hole are: heroism
    Showa Remake basically throw that out of the window, which is the cores of rawest Rider ideal

      Black Sun kneecapped itself by being so _gritty_ and _real,_ with all the heavy real world problems making the story miserable and bitter. SKR did the smart thing and found a balance: being a Kamen Rider is a horrible, violent burden, and it can leave you in greater pain than you thought possible, but it's also a chance to become something greater than who you were, without forgetting the person you used to be, and without losing sight of the better tomorrow than can come because people choose to fight, whether it's against injustice, evil, or despair. _That_ has always been the heart of Kamen Rider.

    Welp, you said everything that needs to be said for this movie but one thing that a long time Kamen Rider fans need to be noted about this movie despite having a mixed review:
    It is THE BEST iteration of what kamen rider supposed to be. TOEI kinda steer Kamen Rider from a superhero show into a saturated toy advertisment disguised as a superhero show over the decade and it ruined the franchise as a whole and made the newer generation have the wrong perception of what this franchise supposed to looked like.
    Anno's love for Kamen Rider ended up saving it's identity once more. Many other modern remake of classic kamen rider are either trying hard to be dead serious yet managed to forget what kamen rider supposed to be, like Black Sun, instead of having a kick ass remake it just became another dragging mess.

    • @ShinGlassman054
      @ShinGlassman054  7 місяців тому +2

      I completely respect your opinion here.
      Those are good points, the same thing happened with the Ultraman franchise. Everybody needs a gimmick to sell some toys. In fact, one of them (Ultraman X) literally transforms with an Ultraman toy.
      I get that some people like this and some people don’t. I’ve realized that that’s where marketing and executives have lead the franchise, because that’s how they make most of the money to make more shows. But it is a little unfortunate that it’s difficult to get projects without this element.
      As someone who really enjoyed Black Sun, I was pleased that it wasn’t focused on selling toys and brought the franchise’s history with political messages back to the forefront.
      Another thing is with the shows, I would love to see more in the format of Black Sun, where they have the episode count they need for the story, and tell it over the course of that without needing an episodic formula to include a fight at the end of every episode.
      Now, I’m not insulting that style, I really enjoy my fair share of that as well. It’s just sad to me that we can’t get more “different” kinds of movies and shows in these franchises as well. I also think we need some well written female lead projects in the Rider and Ultra series especially. There’s plenty of great female side characters, but why always a side character?
      I’m hoping as these franchises continue, they become more unique, and while moving towards the future, never forget what has made these series’ so impactful in the past.

    For me the only flaw this movie had is that outside of it's character-driven narrative, the main antagonist has a pretty underwhelming impact to the movie. After killing his own sister, he kinda just became a final boss for the sake of having a final boss for the movie.
    But to be completely honest, it doesn't really matter because the entire film is about celebrating Hongo's humanity. I really like that aspect of the movie. There's many themes a superhero movie should make you feel like hope or courage - but nothing gives a celebration to one's own humanity like SKR does and I think that's beautiful.

    • @QilinsReverseScale
      @QilinsReverseScale 3 місяці тому

      To expand on my own thoughts, his idea of being the anti-thesis to Kamen Rider by rejecting his humanity in pursuit of "paradise" or "peace" is something that's been done before but the execution in this film was lousy. I like to blame Anno's kind of careless execution for not putting more emphasis to the antag's own human thoughts but he just became a nonchalant villain to Kamen Rider in this film. It doesn't really matter if they're opposite, they don't have a clash of emotions like they should have. The final boss knows what he's sacrificing but he doesn't really care all that much about it. Not like Hongo who thought so much about his own actions, feelings before he made the decision to face him. It's just not as emotionally captivating as it should have been considering it's the final clash of the film.
      I don't want every villain to be relatable, that's not the point of my criticism. It's just the lack of depth to the character that bothers me. If villains are remorseless and evil, then it's up to the visuals and dialogues to elicit to the watchers this information. But you can make a pretty convincing remorseless villain by showing them in action not in dialogue. This film had neither to support this aspect of the character. It makes villains just flat and one-dimensional and on top of that, you just don't feel any emotion for that villain; not even disgust or understanding. It also makes the Hero's Journey feels like a complete waste of time because the hero is dumping his own feelings with action to someone who doesn't really care at all. It doesn't fit thematically for a climactic battle.

      Ah dang, that’s ok though. We all take in media differently.
      I love those movies too. Kamen Rider the First has some great action, and the love triangle is so weirdly written. The continued intercutting of dramatic scenes with footage of snowflakes. Randomly cutting to the backstory of the Cobra cyborgs without warning when we didn’t get backstory of any other cyborgs. It sounds like I’m being negative, but don’t get me wrong, what I’m saying couldn’t be more positive. I love everything about the movie, it’s amazing.
      The Next is also pretty fun. I really like the horror elements, I just wish the horror storyline was more prominent during the second half of the movie.

    I'm glad you like this movie, but as a kamen rider fan for many years and a lover of superhero movies, this movie and shin ultraman were garbage for me.
    but i will start with the good.
    1: the suit is a great update, shiny and sleek while keeping all the original elements.
    2: music
    the bad SPOILERS
    1: why is it every time in Japanese media, to make a kid's show adult is to make it depressing, brooding, and linger on shots way too long? oh and add comedic levels of blood.
    2: SPOILERS why is KR 1 so weak? 1 movie and he's dead.
    3: the fights are bad... over use of cheap CGI and bad camera angles. this isnt a flat page in a manga and looped animations of left right left right left right fist are not interesting!
    KR Geats was coming out the same year, when the morning TV show is doing better fights with better camera movements and angles, better colours and smarter use of CGI, the movie has a serious problem.
    4: shallow and rushed re telling of the original. too many walking and brooding shots waste time. should have focused more on the 2 main characters. the movie didnt meed KR2, it didnt need back stories for the evil generals, the same mistake the first made almost 20 years ago.

      typing on the phone, hard to say more but shin ultraman has even more problems.
      great monster CG, colorful and true to the original suits.
      but the movie doesn't know who it's for. is it for kids? old people who are fans of the original ?
      sometimes it's serious, sometimes characters talk and repeat information, sometimes it's a joke if people are in danger or no.
      oh and all the separate stories are not mixed together at all, along with more than 1 main villain ugh

      @Notaro_D_Ryogami 4 місяці тому

      For the KR 1 being weak part it's not that he's weak but more so that Zero is so strong that he had to overload his Typhoon with Plana in order to be able to one up Zero, this pretty much strained his body to the point that causes him to die. Honestly there's worse ways to kill him off but having him sacrificing himself in order to save Zero is pretty good and in character imo

    • @Notaro_D_Ryogami
      @Notaro_D_Ryogami 4 місяці тому

      For point 3, Anno tried to replicate the OG show's style (in fact the whole movie was pretty much stylized in that way) and there's also some stuff that were taken in from the manga version (like Hongo dying and became an AI in Ichimonji's helmet) so yea

    • @Notaro_D_Ryogami
      @Notaro_D_Ryogami 4 місяці тому

      For point 4 really none of the evil generals were given that much backstory sans Zero but considering his role it makes sense, and not including Nigou would be a huge disservice to the franchise since it was thanks to him that Kamen Rider is what it is today, in a sense he's literally the foundation of the franchise going forward
