- Today I go in depth into what I look for in a Musky reel. This is an important component to Musky fishing and I pass on what I've learned over my many years of chasing Muskies.

Penn squall is at a decent price point at $200usd. It got brass gears and 5+1 bearings. I’m thinking about trying one for the 2022 szn
I use black max bait caster and it works fine 18lb drag works nice with 60lb power pro
Maxtoro has the same internals as an Abu C3 which is basically same as a c4. C4 has higher gear ratio and more bearings. You should get the same utility out of a maxtoro as you would from a C3 or C4.
What do you think is a good reel for glidebaits?
Hey now don’t crap on my max toro lol! I used to have one that I used a lot in the past. Great breakdown dude, I bought a Piscifun 300 size reel to use next season. I have heard they are good for the 100 dollar price range, curious to see how they hold up.
I couldn’t thing of another cheap low profile so I kinda jammed it in😂
What would you recommend for a heavy pulling bait reel (double 10 bucktails etc.)? Right now I’m looking at the Diawa lexa TW 400P-P, lexa HD 400PWR-P, the Okuma Komodo SS KDS-436P, shimano tranx 500, and the Diawa Prorex 400P-P. I would prefer a solid line pickup (in terms of spool size) and a gear ratio of 5.3:1 5.1:1 4.3:1 or 4.1:1
I prefer a slower reel for high resistance baits. Ease of retrieve makes up for the slow speed. I’d say the Tranx 500 if you want soemthing that’s gonna be bulletproof, otherwise I’ve had great experiences with The Daiwa Prorex and Lexa TWs
What problems have you had with the Prorex TW? I'm thinking about getting one..
Get a prorex 400 8.1 it rocks. You can't get a gear ratio that's too fast. Simply reel slower. Very hard to reel faster. It's beautiful, smooth and silent and strong. Great reel
Im late to your youtube chanel so sorry im commenting on older stuff, im just catching up. If it was my money, a 6500 beast se, if nothing else is the looks, and probably a toro. AND next summer im probably off on holiday til illinois. So we might do an adventure to lake st claire. But we see. Im defenlty get some fishing gear with me. And look up fishing permits of course. Dont wana break any laws going on holiday.

what do you think about the shimano scorpion 21 monster drive 300? ive heard its practicslly identical to the tranX 300 but it is 100 dollars cheaper
I’ve never used one so can’t say! I like a 400 size for musky fishing personally
300 or 400 size reel? And what line lb you loading up? See lots recommending 400 so can load heavier pound but wonder how much line I “actually” need
400, I always run 100lb braid. I usually fill half the spool with mono backing.

I’ve heard it’s actually a pretty good reel from people who have experience with it. I mostly threw it out for reference and not to talk it down. So from what I’ve heard you have nothing to worry about!
I have a 100 dollar reel that works fine it's a lews baitcaster speed spool 7 to 2
I used to musky fish, until I smartened up. They are truly the fish of 10,000 casts. I target pike now. Way more fun, easier to catch, get real big and just can catch 10 pike for every one musky. The resistance would be exactly the same no matter what gear ratio. You're throwing the same bait with the same line thru the same water. The resistance would only change if you changed the lure
Thats just not true. Gear ratio most definitely effects reeling resistance, a lower gear ratio equates to higher torque, this is why slower gear ratio reels are typically known as a "winching" reel and high gear ratios are known as "burner" reels.
I just started using a Tranx 401 AHG, switching from an Abu NaCl after years of use and can tell you the retrieval resistance/pull resistance on the same bait, with the same line and fishing the same ol' lakes is significantly different between the two reels.
With my Abu NaCl I can reel double 10/12's all day long with little to no effort, the Tranx on the other hand even with just double 8's is extremely exhausting to use even for just a few casts... the amount of physical effect needed to crank the reel each turn is easily double the energy used on the NaCl and you can feel a ton of vibrations transferring directly through to the reel handle... its jarring to say the least... and again, thats just with double 8s on the Tranx AHG!
With the low gear NaCl it retrieves big blades so well, it makes you question if the blades are even spinning in the water or not, like no joke, double 10s run so smoothly youd think the bait wasnt working at all because you dont ever really feel any vibrational feedback coming through the reel handle, the pull resistance is vary faint feeling compared to that of a higher geared reel.
And if you havent ever noticed before usually the same reels with a slower gear ratio, will have a higher drag rating... then the same model reel in a high speed gear ratio... Shimano, Abu etc etc its common among the industry to see reels spec'd this way.
After using the low gear NaCl for so long, I was hoping I could switch over to a high speed reel and still be able to throw all the same baits and I quickly found out thats just not realistic.
By the end of this season or start of next season, I plan to be running both the Tranx AHG and A.
