  • Whether it’s an artist, engineer, architect or an entrepreneur, many professions use drawing to visually explore the creative process which essentially leads to innovative decision making.
The Center for Visual Arts, Lee Gallery at Clemson University drawing experience allowed students to participate in an intense hands-on creative research with peers from a variety of disciplines resulting in a better awareness of the world.
International Visiting Artist - Educated at Goldsmiths College of Art, London and Exeter College of Art UK, Clive King has exhibited his work internationally in more than 100 solo and 200 group exhibitions at venues such as the Museum of Modern Art, Wales; Oxford Gallery, UK; and Camden Arts Center, London. His awards in the U.S. include four regional fellowships, and a Southern Arts Federation-National Endowment for the Arts award. King has been an artist-in-residence in numerous art institutions throughout the country and has delivered more than 100 lectures at Institutions such as The Royal College of Art, Pratt Institute, and School of Visual Arts, NY.
The artist visit and workshop was organized and made possible by the Lee Gallery and Drawing Professor, Kathleen Thum kathleenthum.com.

Amazing teaching -wonderful to see students accessing their flow state working in groups and exploring the physicality of large drawings.

Automatic drawing is from the surrealist movement. It’s not a technique.

Joe Rodriguez you are right the surrealists developed this technique based on Freuds automatic writing and drawing and popularized it. Its still a technique just as pointillism is within Impressionism. I’m sure humans used this before Surrealism just as we might doodle subconsciously on an envelope whilst on the phone, without ever knowing about Surrealism.

... ...it is unclear what the premises of the project were (probably very vague, as in the vast majority of art schools these days), but the designation "automatic" doesn't reflect what the students did.
If the process would have been "automatic", the resulting images would have been much more differentiated... Half of the participants came out with oversized synapses. Seventy years ago, the same experiment would have produced some kind of brutalist architecture images, in rough strokes...
