I needed to be reminded (yet again, I've got a brain injury and memory problems) to let go and play because my art's become too detailed and restricted so thank you for this!

Great! Thank you for that presentation. Starting with technique can be so intimidating and daunting that some people will not even start. Your way allows for the painter to identify their “hand” which is different from anyone else’s. It’s a way of finding “who they are”, which must be done to let their “truth” shine through. I don’t think anyone can find “who they are” or “their truth” until they have done a number of paintings in which they begin to recognize the shapes, lines, and styles that they identify as their own. Those shapes, styles, and lines identify their “hand”. Then they begin to recognize how they express themselves, what “looks like their work, their “hand”. We all have a different “hand” to our paintings that identifies them as ours. People can look at them and say, “Oh, that’s a Picasso!” or “Oh, that’s a Monet.” When a painter’s style is recognizable to them, the painter, that is “their truth” and the expression of who they are that they provide to the world. Finding your own “hand” is the first step. Then someone will say, “Oh, that’s a (enter your own name)!”

Never thought to combine oil pastel and soft pastel and then gouache. You make it work. I’ll have to try that!
