Ah the mystery of the juried show. I accidentally walked in on a jurying process today which led me here as I wondered how it works. Of course it is totally subjective but I like the advice given here especially about his looking for that "surprise" painting. Also I always keep a photo of the extremely subpar painting of a black cat that was accepted and I could never understand why it was accepted. Of course that is just my subjective opinion haha. Thank you David for shedding some light on an otherwise very secretive process.
Thanks! Now I am more confident my strange work is unique enough to get noticed? Maybe? I went to a very large exhibition of juried work to get an idea if my work could stand up against them and it can! Yippee! Artists can carry a lot of self doubt... 😊
Have you ever judged art festivals? I have a booth shot with my artwork in it and if you go really, really, really close, you can see my signature. I’m on one of my art works. I’m concerned it will be rejected.

What I see at juried exhibitions is that visual art is not taken at face value, rather the story (bullshit) behind the piece is what is judged.

I swear the juried with prize I entered 3 years in a row was rigged.
I would not be suprised. Especially if the person that won personally knows the people judging the works... 😅
