8x10 Photography - A Challenging Shot

  • Finally I had the right conditions to photograph an old boat, dull and overcast with no wind but on arrival at the location the boat had vanished!
    Undaunted I surveyed the other wrecks and eventually picked a composition that offered a lot but was technically challenging to capture with the 8x10 camera.

    Good work Steve and challenging conditions indeed. I'm not sure I would have even got my camera out, but you've shown that with the correct vision there are shots to be had. Always interesting to see you at work.

    Interesting composition - the little stream of water leading to the derelict boat. I like it! As a sailor, there's something so sad about boats like this and you captured it wonderfully.

    Really like that image. By not trying to include the whole boat you have given the observer a context that encourages the imagination to complete the scene. To put their own story into the image. Very nice.

    That boat has so much character, and I really like the composition you went with. I know the exact struggles with DOF and losing the midground, but in this case, I think it also helps to simplify the photo a bit, and it really lets those foreground grasses pop.

    • @SteveONions
      @SteveONions  5 років тому

      Thanks Ben, the top of the frame is dropping out of focus too but I don’t think it detracts for the image. I reckon I could have got it all sharp with 4x5.

    Steve, thanks again for showing us your work and how you created it. I see what you mean about the challenge of excluding an unwanted background. And I agree with your framing choice. True, not all of the boat is visible in your composition; I find that adds to my viewing involvement in the print. My imagination tries to fill in the remainder of the boat and that’s more engaging than handing it all to me on a platter.
    I hadn’t thought about that philosophy of composition and it’s a good one.
    More of your work is something I’m keen to see this year. Good luck.

    • @SteveONions
      @SteveONions  5 років тому

      Thanks Larry. I am very conscious of avoiding large bright areas around the edge of an image as they tend to lead your eye out of the scene. It is possible to contain it using a black border but this has to be used sparingly or it will become a crutch for weak compositions.

  • @davidpowell5437
    @davidpowell5437 5 років тому +1

    Another successful image - there's something about old boats! You carefully explained the focus plane problems you encountered but you have turned a problem into an advantage. The mud doesn't need to be terribly sharp because the boat will always be the centre of attention, and the foreground grass gives the image a sense of scale but no one wants to study the surface of a patch mud unless tracking some unfortunate wader with a view to lunch...
    Are the footprints your own work? Very brave of somebody!

    • @SteveONions
      @SteveONions  5 років тому

      Thanks David and the footprints certainly aren’t mine. The plane of focus was quite shallow even with the small aperture and the top of the boat gets gradually softer but I can live with it as that area is burned down and of lesser interest.

    Morning Steve. A nice easy watch for a Sunday morning, ta. I know where your coming from on that venue(and others) with the mud. I still find the stuff 18 months on! I have made a light wooden frame, (looks like a scissor fold out stool with cord as the seat) to keep the bag off the mud/sand. It fits over the top of the bag and secures with the side straps. Works well and doesn't add too much if the car is parked a while away. Not been seduced from 5x4, but do like 10x8 contact prints, hmm. Cheers, Diz

    That cemetery of boats has amazed me. I know it from other videos ..... Close to home there is a lagoon, which affects the tides, which at low tide appear several sunken ships. I've just recently received my Intrepid MK 1 in the mail, and the Nikkor m 300 mm f9, but didn't make any image on it yet trying to decide what film/developer combination to use. Do you use the HP5 in this light condition because of the learning curve and forgiveness of the film? I'm leaning towards FP4 plus and maybe Rodinal to start out. What's your thoughts on that?

    You are saying that 8x10 gives you lots of latitude. I've heard similar arguments from time to time but don't get the rational behind it. The film material/emulsion is certainly the same as for 35mm film. In the digital world larger sensors tend to have larger pixels and therefore quite literally gather more light which can give you more dynamic range. But in the analog world, the molecules are of the same size so I don't see how the argument would carry over. Can you give me a hint?

      Hi Florian. It is all down to the amount enlargement required for the final image. The smaller the format the more demanding the technical requirements for a typical print, a 16”x12” from a 35mm is quite a stretch as it is more than 10 times the linear dimensions of the film. The equivalent enlargement from 8x10 film gives a print over 8 feet wide at which point the limitations of the film are the same but you would not typically view such an image up close.
      I have made very small enlargements from poor 35mm negatives which look absolutely fantastic, the principle is the same.

      @@SteveONions Thanks a lot for your reply! I do get the negative-size-relative-to-print-size argument when it comes to details. But I understood latitude as dynamic range or contrast range. There I don't see how the density in the negative would be different and more forgiving for 35mm.

    Hi, Steve. What can you say about Mamiya RZ67? Have you ever used it?

      Never used one, they have a very good reputation but the size has always put me off.

      Great optics, heavy as hell to hike with. Especially with a couple lenses. In the 90’s it was our choice portrait camera.

      @@GrainyByNature I've just encountered one of RZs in a local camera store for USD700 with a lens. In a pretty good condition (but for rubber grips on the edges). Just wondering, will it be a nice add to a medium format photography.

      Yuriy Zhurahovskiy They are excellent. Make sure the film back is 120 or can take 120 film. Since 220 film isn’t made anymore. Make sure the shutter works at all speeds and the glass is flawless. Also make sure the focus is smooth. They are great cameras.

    It may be your particular style and you do you. But I find your images so very bland and lifelessly flat, devoid of any contrast that differentiates the textures and tonal range available.
