I think the shot at 16:00 is one of your best shots yet. it has the feel of an old timey workplace after a deadly shooting and fills me with an incomprehensible sense of dread

I personally shoot Fuji HR-U X-Ray film since it's great resolution and can't beat 40¢ a sheet. I don't feel too bad whenever I mess up and it's really helped me learn 8x10 fundamentals
I've shot out there several times and the "train thing' is a prop that was used in the 1986 film “Tough Guys.” It's sad how quickly this place is being destroyed
I'm actually a bit surprised that you don't end up taking any portraits of the two of you on these excursions. I know the times I have gone on adventures I always try to get a picture of myself and friends on the film.
I just wanted to thank you for your videos. It is always a treat for me to see that you have posted a new one. I don't know if you're aware of how much some of us appreciate your style, insights and artistry but rest assured, we do and I'm one very big fan.
Totally obsessed with your videos! They feel like documentaries and I always grab my pen and my notebook to take notes while I watch them! Keep going with this magical videos!
I love LF because it validates my viewing of a scene and triages frames. If you go somewhere with a 35mm you shoot a roll and get 5 or 10 good shots, maybe 2 very good shots. With LF, you go with two sheets loaded and you come back with two sheets shot - both are great. It makes you triple-think before shooting, punishes you when you screw up and rewards you when you actually find a good composition. I also started with some Harman direct positive paper - quite a difficult material to work with but man... once you get it, oof.
Hi Jason, I'm sorry you are down. We all experience the valleys and mountains along the way. Wherever you are, we are ready for the next sunrise alongside you. Dew bros unite
Wow, my father used a Cambo bellows camera with offsets, Schneider 1.2 optics that also served him with a coupling for the enlarger, and 13x18 cm plates and an adapter for 120/220 rolls and 6x7 cm format. It's been about 60 years now.
I am filled with wonder and awe! Maybe the prints are worth the work! The cost aiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii! Many generations ago, My Linhof a mere 4x5, parted company! Enlarger, sheet film holders, extras were gone! Gone! Never missed! I know it seems fun! I see lots of labor, few choices and horrible calculations! Anyway respectfully, great results! I can see your prints gracing fine restaurants and hotels! One's still in use! Bravo Jason!
I spent the 1/2 the day today going through 14 - 4x5 holders and 7 - 8x10 holders making sure what was where. I have 3 sheets of 8x10 to develop from last year, and then load those 2 holders and everything is 100% again. Nice to be shooting Full Frame again isn't it? 🙂🙂
I have a few thoughts on this episode: 3:01 James May Moment 18:10 The clock ticking sound at the golden hour shot is such a nice detail to empathize the underlying urgency. 24:58 Kinda miss the 3d-ish zoom-in at the end.
Well digger's...Bomb defuser's... What a terrific palette of evocative imagery you offer. Very enjoyable images. Shallow depth of field at F22 and no diffraction, kool. I'm too lazy for film, but kudos to you and your back!
Next time your in a location like this You should get some of that smoke in a can. Mist the place first to get some light streams coming in from the windows. That would look nice
you had a note at 9:17 about painting out some graffiti. Was that just for the youtube showing of the image or did you paint it out on the scan of the photo?
With all those badass cameras, I was curious if you’ve thought about trying the new Kodak H35n? Im really curious what you could do with such a cheap point and shoot. Also my favorite shot is the “discard” at 6:50. The high contrast and composition look really nice with the added dimensions the graffiti gave it. Fantastic shot.
I was turning around what 8x10 to buy a while ago, so I am curious about your camera. Looks like hybrid Bellatrix with AG810 back standard. Did you order it from Gibellini specificly to boost Bellatrix with lever lift mechanism?
I've been watching through all your videos from years ago and this is the first one I have seen freshly posted. So it's my first chance to comment and have it be relevant. Better not mess it up. ....shit.
Whenever i see a grainydays video pop up and have it be new, i feel treated like when i get back my photos from the lab. Once i get used to my Linhof (medium format) ill have to try LF
Fuji HR-U Medical Xray film costs 40 CENTS per sheet for 8x10. Rate at between 100-200 (inconsistent due to it being orthochromatic unlike light meters) and develop in normal B&W chemistry. Very high contrast, pulling may be a good idea too.
i personally am kind of okay with waist level finders, but my problem with them is i can't never level the camera properly. a lot of my images come out slanted, but i guess my wack impulsive sort of shooting is at least partly responsible for that
So that ‘s the popsicle stick contraption. How do you use it? I usually just eye it and overlap a lot, but I run into problems in featureless areas for stitching later, Lightroom can’t do it.
Probably the worst video to ask but it would be intresting to hear your thoughts on some iconic half frame cameras such as the pen f. Beautiful, fun to use and quality glass. Would be a bit of a change from the norm 😊
Non-penile graffiti can look really cool, sometimes especially in b/w And if it is a graffiti hotspot, you can date the photos by what artwork is up at the time of shooting. And I must emphasize once more - I'm talking about actually artful graffiti, not gangsigns and kids drawing obscenities.
Loading 8x10 film in a fuckin dark bag... at least you had the plywood. Have been meaning to pick up one of those Fuji dark boxes... but damn are they expensive (assuming you can find one on ebay). Have been putting off buying an 8x10 camera, although every once and a while I think about picking up a box of Provia 100F 8x10 for the low price of $420 before Fuji decides to discontinue it... Pretty cool shots, though.
Whoever added the f to “art inside you” is a comedic genius.
Im glad you are using large daddy format again
It’s just "daddy format", we dropped "large"
It's just 'daddy'
@@chowderbreadbowl666It's implied, so we didn't need it
@@chowderbreadbowl666 I dropped a large too
Changing 8x10 film in a fumble bag, the absolute madman.
Sheet film is incredibly easy to load in a dark bag.
Yes its crazy enough doing 4x5 I could not image 8x10.
@@kurtpleavinconsidering to the 2 other opinions here, yours doesn’t seem to hold much water
@@firstletterofthealphabet7308 experience > opinion.
@@kurtpleavin Changing 8x10 is hard even in a 11x14 tent. Fumblebags are so bad.

And I thought it was bad shooting 4x5 in the mid 1970s when it cost a quarter to release the shutter.
buy a scanner and develop your own film, duh
Jason taking some 8x10's while I've been multiplying my Half-frame collection and carrying a Pen F everywhere I go.

Great tip thanks!
Noted! Thanks
brilliant!!! I made prints for a medical person from X-Rays!@@jazzclarinet2006
How many sheets per box?
You should’ve kept that to yourself because now everybody’s gonna come on here and see that and go buy it and the prices are going to skyrocket. 😂😂

Backseat driving shot is legit. Makes me feel like I'm along for the ride
I picture a movie scene where they drive up past Steve Buscemi, who’s asks: “what’s with the hats?”
"I set up the 120mm... a nice super wide-angle"
God I love 8 x 10

Where did the PAUSE tag go in the first and second shot? It’s in the video but not the 8x10 photo
okay I thought I was trippin when I didn't see it in the actual shot lmao
The chaos of the second shot with the piles of chairs and what not. Very good. Really like that one.
Large format requires a large format hat
Bless me, Grain Daddy
holy cow the Video was really good and to be honest the sound design was out of this world it was very well arrangedn and immersiv :D great work jason
This guy deserves so many more subscribers. I hope you continue to enjoy shooting film!!
You've gotta come over here to Japan my guy. So many abandoned buildings, schools, hotels, resorts with little to no graffiti.
Your storytelling and pacing have hit a new milestone.
Love your ‘favourite shot’.
Break the social norm, do street photography on 8x10

You definitely need a caddie in photo world when you are working with large format
Refreshing to hear you say "did I miss a step?"
The desk in the office was the best. Hands down.
Woowoo! Absolutely killed it man. See you next week 🤣🤝

Not the format for me, but love to see your beautiful work!
I use my darkslide light and dark strips the same way you do: black means unexposed film inside, white means it's seen the light
Cool Gibellini!!!!!!!👍👍👍

I liked the wavy distoritions in that first one
I love how we are now becoming part of the video when choosing which shots to take
My man is SERIOUSLY channeling up some Ansel Adams mojo!!
the papers on the floor of that one color shot are honestly sick. reminds me of the album cover for panic prevention by jaime t
Nice. With the return to large format i’ll have to resubscribe
Love the portra shot
Boomtown! Budget Ken doll is back!!

I see, ACN810 is phased out model replaced by AG810 for around 4 grants.
My favorite is the office shot

....shit.
I have the exact same light meter and it also died on me on a shoot this week. Thankfully metering isn’t the worst in a studio
Thank you for the * because I thought I was losing my mind when I saw the "Pause" graffiti was missing.
Whenever i see a grainydays video pop up and have it be new, i feel treated like when i get back my photos from the lab.

Another banger. Please do a how-to 8x10 video

Whilst not as cheap as X-Ray film, Fomapan also goes hard on larger formats.
I look forward to seeing Ben Horne carrying a tote bag (or two) into Zion on his next trip.
It's amazing how the expired FP4 really de-accentuated the giant PAUSE graffiti. lol
That moment when you burn so much money on film that your beanie can't get smaller so you go to the Ansel hat.
Where did you get that camera wrap/tote bag combo? I really should get something like that.
The framing at the beginning of the shot at 9:39 would have made a great photo
i personally am kind of okay with waist level finders, but my problem with them is i can't never level the camera properly. a lot of my images come out slanted, but i guess my wack impulsive sort of shooting is at least partly responsible for that
This whole scene and atmosphere is the desolation of Leone and the desolation of Kubrick.
I love you
You should try a European 10x8 format, it’s a game changer!
always impressed and inspired by your video editing 🔥

Wait, what happened to the "PAUSE" graffiti in the image at 9:15?
Your second photo is my favourite of the day that I told my family I took to soak up their apathetic feigned approval.
Love these shots! Hint: Have the lighter side of the dark cloth on the outside. :)
What's the point of shooting large format, if you leave out the toilets?
Return of the 8x10 oh yes

The comment about the Pentax 67 got me going.
