I understand that players like Rohit, Pant have authority to go hard regardless of situation , as they have proved themselves enough. But people like Sarfaraz must have high price for their wicket. Difference of level at Irani vs Intl is huge. I hope he learns to respect the opportunity he got.
This middle order is not strong for these conditions..Pujara and rahane are better players in such conditions..the way sarfaraz,Pant's feet were moving ..they were nowhere..It was unfortunate Virat and rahul got out like that.Other than that NZ bowled consistently in good areas..Rohit and jaiswal never played any rash shots atleast for first 6-7 overs..But NZ kept on hitting those good areas.hence rohit had to take a chance to counter this which didnt work out today..i think middle order needs to be strong..

It's just a 'what-if' scenario. The point being KL might've been in a better situation given his experience to negotiate with the new-ish ball. That would also mean the ball will be slightly older by the time kohli cake in to bat. And to quote siddhu like they did ' if ifs and buts were pots and pans' I don't know the rest either haha

Their catching made the difference. They converted those half chances into wickets and that's what restricted India to 46.

'Catches win Matches' - An Old Saying!
Today's game proved it again.
Newzealand took some fantastic catches while India dropped 3 crucial chances, adding up to that India also missed that Runout opportunity and also a stumping chance.
Newzealand's catching restricted India to 46, while the India's catching let Newzealand reach the safe zone scoring 180/3 at stumps.
There is only a 5% chance of India winning this game from here. Max they can try to draw this match.
To win, India will have to wrap up NZ tomorrow by Lunch without letting them lead above 210-220 Runs.
Then, bat for another 5⅓ sessions till the first 10 overs of Day 5, and score close to 500-520 runs giving NZ a target of 280-300 runs in 80 overs.
And then, try to all out NZ in those 80 overs or push them to atleast draw the match. At that stage when the required rate would be approx 3.5rpo, NZ may not attempt to win the game. Even if they do, they will take that chance till the mid of 2nd session approx 35-40 overs into their innings and if they lose 4-5 wickets till that time, they will surely head for a draw and get defensive which will put India on the driver's seat and aggressively attack with the ball. That will definitely create a chance for a win.
But, all these situations above, fall into the 5% chance which looks close to impossible. But it's cricket, it's an unpredictable game. We have seen Rahul-Laxman & even Pant in Gabba turning around test matches and converting that 5% into a 100% chance to win.

I think more praise needs to be given to no bowlers. Yes, conditions weren’t good, yes our batters played some bad shots but the way Henry and o rouke were bowling was incredible. They hit a great line and length like a metronome and got the rewards
Lets Move on 46 is past. India should aim to get Nz restricted within 300 then post 450 on board. Chasing 180-190 will not be easy on 5th day

For people questioning Virat, he averages 47 so far in this WTC cycle. For perspective - Rohit averages 37 and Gill averages 43. Remember, Virat did not play 5 tests against England on batting friendly wickets
Please. That average is inflated from two hundreds on dead pitches in draws. Over 300 of his 468 runs have come off those two innings. He's also only played 7 tests in this WTC cycle, compared to Rohit's 12 tests and Gill 11 tests.

Kiwi trying to view this from an Indian perspective: 46 is a shocker when you look at the opposition. Southee is clinging on and should have retired. Henry is in good form, but has an average of 31.something. And O'Rourke is a rookie, a very promising one, but a rookie none the less.
Henry's the epitome of the late bloomer archetype. His record has just exploded at the backend of his career.

How did the Indian management got it so wrong? That pitch assisted fast bowlers so much, India only select 2 fast bowlers and included 3 spinners. Isn't this a wrong selection knowing the conditions were overcast and the pitch was fresh. Also another big decision which went against India was why did India opted to bat first on a pitch that was fresh with overcast conditions, look at the movement the Kiwi bowlers got off the pitch, they really messed it up (Rohit and Gambhir, what have u done) :(
You saw how the pitch behaved once the sun came out. The only wickets to fall in the NZ innings were from the spinners. I think the thought would have been that if they can get past the initial hours, then they can post a big score. But the bounce and seam movement was much more exaggerated than expected and Ind batsmen couldn't cope.
Rahane & Pujara were missed the most today and they shouldn't have been looked past 😞

Top order's defence is poor. For a long while now our all rounders (Jaddu, Ashwin,Pant & Shardul) have saved us from a top order collapse. Defensive game with soft hands and letting the ball come to you has been discarded as a policy.

This is a major issue. Domestic cricket is highly affected by this. Every new cricketer is trying to play attacking cricket so that they get a chance in IPL team. And a good half IPL season brings the player close to all format of Indian team. Then comes brands and he establishes himself and slowly fades away.
On a helpful wicket India is a suspect in batting in front of genuine pacers. Look at New Zealand, batsmen playing with confidence and holding out in front of Indian media self claimed Worlds best bowling line of India, Bumrah, Siraj, Shami ( not playing this Test ) Arsdeep and Akashdeep. Mind it, all of them are medium pacers and at times Siraj, Shami, Bumrah can be considered as fast medium. However Arsdeep and Akashdeep can improve in next few years.
Bhumrah is world class, this one match isn't going to change that. Siraj on the other hand...i don't really know why he's hyped up so much

I think the issue lies in the temperament, patience and decision making.
The current Indian test squad is full of all format players mostly T20 format players who are excellent in attacking cricket. But the problem is the mindset of playing counter attaching cricket shots for releif in every clutch situations. Sometimes it gives result but sometimes you need proper technique for leaving ball, patiently exhausting the bowler to change line and length. See today's all wickets should be easily avoided by Pujara, Rahane, murali vijay, Vihari, laxman, Dravid.
Not everytime you can attack the bowler if you are stressed by his controlled bowling.
Need to increase proper test playing Ranji players in Indian test team. We shouldnt give chances to talented youngsters on basis of their limited over performance.
Test team call must be earned hard.
NZ, Aussies team are there to show India who is the boss here. Comon India underestimated NZ and played to their strong zone. NZ is former ICC Test champion and expected to pose challenge.
I know this show is for Indian audience primarily..still guys ..lots of cricket lovers like me would like to listen also about the opposition team …NZ player’s excellent skills / application etc and not just what our players did / didn’t do …

Sarfraz should understand that these are the situations were by applying himself he would have cemented his position. Players like him who have worked so hard to make it this far will lose their position for ever by not scoring as they wont remember that pitch was difficult. Someone else will come and perform in a good wicket and Sarfraz will be out of team. He should have atleasted tried today to stay longer!

I enjoy DK's analysis and commentary in general but he has a tendency of taking a soft approach when critiquing Team India. Give credit where credit is due, NZ bowled excellent and India looked clueless batting first on this wicket. Rohit and Virat IMHO should retire about WTC 2025. They're skills are on the wane and can only score on flat tracks. India with its impressive bench strength should start grooming their replacement. You need players like Pujara and Dravid who thrives in situations like this! I don't see this team wining Border-Gavaskar trophy down under.
Our top batter can not play good swing bowling and quality spin bowling. It is due to lack of practice in long format.
