1981 MRE Ham and Turkey Loaf - Tasty?

- I open and taste test this MRE from back when I was on active duty, USMC from 1980 - '84.
MREs replaced C Rations for service member's meals in the field.
Peanut butter, pineapple nut cake, crackers, strawberries, and of course our Ham and Turkey Loaf. How does everything taste? Watch and find out.
That's my fav MRE. When I was in grad school, I ate MRE's for two months in addition to real food. God I was so poor. I met an 80 y/o widow that sold me 14 cases of MRE's-- for $120. 1990.
Jay, I wish you still had some of those MREs. I might buy them from you. TFW
A case of MREs goes for upwards of $200 on Amazon now! Too rich for my wallet!
Man I like how hyped he was! made me excited, like I'm opening a mystery box.
I was really excited about that meal. The next one is fun as well. TFW
@@MeAncient Nice! I’m excited to see the next one
When my brother was in the army he bring home the entire case of MRE‘s I was five or six at the time and I would take them to school for lunch
Now that's a great memory. You have a cool brother. TFW, Bobby.
Fantastic videos, keep them coming!!
You got it! Stay tuned. TFW, Paul
We need merch now. One that says “ We do need to cleanse thee old pallet” love your videos and aces videos but these father son videos will definitely last forever. Thank you for sharing with us.
That is a cool part of UA-cam that I never anticipated. It's real fun to go back and watch videos that I was in with Ace or Micah a few years ago and have that memory. It is a treasure. TFW
These are the mre I remember from being a kid with a dad and 2 brothers in the military!
Been watching Ace and you guys fishing for years now. Thanks for your service.
What MOS were you if you don’t mind me asking?
2621, Manual Morse Intercept Operator. It's not even called that anymore. I copied Morse Code between the Soviets and the Cubans. I don't believe too many countries communicate that way anymore. Went to school in Pensacola, Fl.
How about you? Were you in? Usually when someone asks your MOS, they were in the Corps. TFW, Steven.
@@MeAncient I myself never served. Always had an interest in the military, but wasn’t able to join because of my vision diagnosis. Trips me out how similar your boys look like you in your dress blues picture.
Another good video and meal
Glad you enjoyed it
Obviously a job that only Steve would take on and call it a good dinner with a nice hiss. And then finish every bit of it...
If anyone finished that meal, there may have been resulting botulism. It wasn't worth the chance. TFW!
I have heard that there was a reluctance among some soldiers to switch from c-rations to MREs. Did you encounter that?
The C-RATION's were better
When I was in, I was super excited to eat the C-Rats. However, once we ran out of them, there was no choice. It was all MREs once 1981 or so for me. TFW, Shimon!
Awesome vid
thank you!
One of my favorites... Mmmmmmm....
Back in the day, a good one. Today, not so much. TFW :-)
I would have tasted it, then again I didn’t have to smell it 😂
Yes, botulism was a real possibility and you don't mess with that stuff. TFW!
Is it common to wear the John Wayne on the dog tags?
We all did when I was active duty. TFW, Jennifer.
@@MeAncient I recently saw a customer at work , and older guy,, with one on then I saw this video within days. Thought it was weird timing.
I carried mine on my dog tags. Got stuck a few times in bed, rolling over.
I still carried one in my wallet through my IT career. Came in handy a couple times, when the breakroom can opener failed. 😎
Will we get a catch and cook by any chance?
I'm sure one will be out there again. Ace and I did one about a year ago. TFW, Isaiah.
Here's a link to Ace's video....ua-cam.com/video/YCpyeSTTDNE/v-deo.html
Have you ever had Botulism eating these old rations?
Everyone’s farts smelled the same.
lol ide imagine so huh.. hah
You are a brave soul....watch for numb tongue when sampling the old ones. Good job Marine.
Brave or foolish......sometimes a fine line. TFW
Your enthusiasm is contagious. I really hope you continue. You and Ace provide outlets for those who need an escape from life's struggles.
I'm usually pretty enthusiastic about life, Adam. TFW!
@@MeAncient Don’t stop. You’re killing it.
Me Ancient needs a shirt that says “Cleanse the Old Palatte”
Let's get to 100K subscribers before we start getting shirts, me thinks. TFW, Angel!
I love the little stories he tells in every video! it makes your MRE reviews unique and interesting :D Keep it up pops!
I'm happy you enjoy the stories. Sometimes my family gets a little tired of them. :-)
When I was in the Air Force 84-90, I would mix in the creamer with the peaches and strawberries. Love watching the videos! Taking me back to Basic, Tech School and our Field Ops days!
Lier
@@Yengrowtopia1 who are you calling a liar?
I could never save the fruits. I usually ate them right away. That's a great idea, though. Have to keep that in mind. Tks for your service.
@@MeAncient and thank you for your service as well!

"Let's get this on a tray - *NICE* " 😁
"Nice hiss!" 😆
My family was all military (except my sister and I. Me mainly for health reasons or I would've) so I have so much respect for our men and women who have fought and those who still fight.
*Side Note* I love when Me Ancient gets excited about the MRE's his smile puts a huge smile on my face! Keep up the amazing work sir, and God bless.
We enjoy putting them together for y'all. TFW, Courtney.
For what it is worth MRE, C Ration or Even commercial peanut butter in a sealed container will last 100 years. In my bug out kit I have several boxes of non salted crackers, several containers of peanut butter, a fishing pole, a 9mm carbine, 9mm pistol, (for simplicity and survival my pistol and carbine use the same round) Filipino bolo knife (also part machete), other utensils tools, fishing tackle box. 30 cans of string beans, 30 cans of stewed tomatoes. I hate either green string beans or stewed tomatoes, but when you mix the two... the taste is pretty good. Flour, corn meal, spices. The idea... worst case, I can eat peanut butter and crackers, but in that I will bug out to the deep woods and bayous of Louisiana, I can catch fish supplement my protein, make biscuits. Others things, please bring a water container and a bleach bottle. Get the cleanest water you can and to the gallon, 3 drops of chlorine will purify it in an hour. Strain the water though over or through thick cotton. Bad water will kill you. I am a novice survivalist, but I grew up fishing on the bayous and creeks of Louisiana and can rough it for quite some time. When the Govt, says come to the Govt Center for food, lodging etc. When the big disaster happens. Sorry not going to be under the shotgun shells and bullets of the govt. The govt is welcome to find me deep in the overgrown thick wilderness of Louisiana. Even I know, they aren't that stupid. People disappear in the Louisiana outback... We don't know if it was a human that did it or an animal, the body is never found. Good luck finding me. Oh yeah when I get 100 miles from my wilderness yanking the cell phone battery out. Off the grid for the 90 days to 6 months it takes for the USA to right itself. Other useful items hammer, nails different saws, hunting archery set. Who knows you may have to construct a dwelling.
Wolfgang, I like a person who has thought these things thru to their logical and probable conclusions. I like your vibe. TFW!
@@MeAncient Exactly, learned my lesson during Katrina. They could have evacuated New Orleans they had three days to do so... Nope!! Come to the Super dome. When the city flooded thousands in the super dome were trapped with bad N.O. Thugs and backed up toilets. Me, I am going in the opposite direction of where the Officials tell me to be. Be a rebel!!! Take care of your own. Think it through! Fishing is easy, fish jump on the hook. They will bite even on diet soap. That two pack of diet soap will let you fish for two years. little slivers, but they will bite on the guts of the fish you already caught. Free fish bait. Then there are critters, squirrels, rabbits, deer, swine. The whole United States is over run with pigs. welcome to pork city, the back woods. Bring batteries and a radio simple am/fm tune in every new broadcast at 6pm/10 pm. Keep tabs on them as they have no idea where I am. One time had my kids down on the pier at the Tampa Bay skyway. My girl said: "wish I was fishing" I said give me a minute. I went along the pier found discarded hooks and fishing line, found a broken cane pole and a fish someone discarded. Five minutes later she was catching fish. Give a man a fish he eats today, teach him to fish he fishes a life time. Been fishing since I was three... 64 years. Have a good one Ancient. Most folks are so dependent on the Government it is as if they never got out of the cradle. I love America, I love Americans, highly suspicious of my Government. But I pay my taxes and spent 20 plus years in the Army from 1973 through 1998. Wondered why they called me country boy, until I joined the Army I thought all God's children grew up fishing on a Bayou.
I just watched another YT channel, about people eating "high meat". Ie. allowed to begin decomposing. Supposedly they feel a "high" from it. Probably an effect of food poisoning. 😝
SteveMRE1989 would have ate that
Yep, Steve once ate 100 year old beef. He'd consider this meal "fresh"! 😄
Ace, you’re so blessed so have such a loving and caring father. I love this guy, god bless you, aces dad.
Matt, be sure if you are blessed with children, you are that father to them. TFW!
I am also O positive
I hear ya', Missy. TFW
My Navy buddy was B-negative! His biggest worry was needing blood at some point. Pretty rare stuff!
Atleast I now know where your kids get there likeability from haha, great video as always!
It’s almost like they’re all the same person!
My wife says we should have named Micah, 'Lynn Jr.' TFW, Mitch.
seen a guy eat peanut butter from a ww2 mre - it doesnt spoil . just like real honey .
Ohh, same year as my mother she was the USAMPC.
She went to Germany though.
Then my Aunt. Don't forget my Grandpa long stories.
Food is interesting.
I've never seen the strawberries double bagged, it's usually just a compressed block. Cool to see. Ty!
Interesting! That's what my memory of the strawberries was, too.
I went though basic training at about the same time as you at fort lost in the woods (Fort Leonard Wood) and was introduced to the MRE. They handed us the brown plastic pouch with the writing removed and told us not to loose it, we would need it later..... None in the unit had a clue it was food..... When it was getting time for the chow truck to show they had us sit down and open it.... Sad thing is that they were all the dehydrated pork patty meals...... Hahaha...
These are the best MRE review videos, I love them
tks for the compliment, Ben.
Hey he was in beirut thats the capital of my country lebanon
Yeah me too, glad to see a fellow lebanese on here
Once called "The Paris of the Orient". Beautiful city. Then war ruined it. 😔
That was my favorite MRE during OCS in 1989, followed closely by the plain HAM loaf. I miss the John Wayne bars (Oatmeal cookie bars). I love the smell of Ham & Chicken loaf in the evening, nothing else smells like it, it smells to me like "VICTORY!"
Back in the day, all of the nutcakes tasted like garbage. People would eat them with hot sauce stolen from the chow hall.
I was in that minority who really liked the nutcakes. There was one with berries that was really good... the pineapple one not so much.
I’ve been waiting for this one. I’ve eaten this meal a few times! Thanks for sharing this.
You gotta heat up the main for it to constitute properly.
You are right about heating it up. TFW!
mr ancient old grandpa man can you show us a picture of what ace looked like in 1981
Cleanse the old pallet- Me Ancient
Yup!!
I enjoy watching your videos. I too was in the Marines. My Mos was o311, 0317 from 1987-1991. 3-3.
Those nut cakes were the best ! Naturally production of the nut cakes was ceased. The chocolate chip nut cake was the most prized and commanded the highest price when horse trading rations. yes , those early and mid 1980s MREs were good stuff. And the saltines actually had SALT !
I remember that. The older I get the better I was and the more I enjoyed it......TFW!
1998-2002 USMC vet here. Great content here, Marine!
Kevin, MOS? I was a 2621, Manual Morse Intercept Operator. TFW!

He work in the army threw the years until he retire in 2005. His name Steve Anderson.
Matthew, sounds like a good friend to have. Tell him, 'thank you for his service.'

I'll try to remember that, DV. I have a few stories that I think folks would like. TFW!
Great work guys. Most positive review yet, love it.

I watch Micah, Ace and now this channel on the regular, when we see a notification from either of these channels, they take priority.

Glad you like them! I'll have a few more stories both of USMC experiences and some of the history of the areas where I will be recording the videos. TFW!
You can tell that good ol' Ancient REALLY loved his Peanut Butter when he was in, and in present times, because when he saw that packet, his young inner Marine jumped out with joy and happiness. The reviews and comparisons are always a treat, along with the stories from the old school USMC. Thank you Ancient and Ace. Keep it up with the awesome content, because we can tell you dudes are having fun doing this, especially "pops". Cheers.
Andrei, I am happy you enjoy the video. I truly enjoy making them and trying out all this international food. TFW
It would be cool if you ate one of the Walmart knockoffs of MREs (adventure meals) keep up the videos!
Better than those old nasty expired mres lol. I was in the service for 18 years and I'd def not ever eat that old stuff haha. The gum, coffee, salt and pepper was the only thing that was probably good lol.
Keep watching! TFW, Noah.
GOD bless America. Thank you for sharing. I hope we get a better leader up here in Canada. So tired of the communist mutt.

Wow....😁👍.... I'm the same age as that MRE....
I have a child about your age.......
That was my favorite MRE in the 80's. I loved that one. I used to eat the fruit dry but take a swig of water from my canteen with every bite.
Yes. Agree. Was the best back then.
I never could do the dry fruit in my mouth and then add water. I had to do the water before I ate. TFW, Steve.

When trying older food with nuts you should take a very small bite like you did and give it like twenty or thirty seconds and wait to see if your tongue feels weird if it's tingling or you have a bad feeling in the back of your throat then the nuts went bad
