Hi Steve, I am impressed with your courage at eating old food. This episode was very nostalgic for me, my first Army enlistment was from Nov 1981 to Nov 1985. This brings back some great memories. Thanks.
Steve is easily the most wholesome guy on the internet today. Passion shows in all of his videos and I thoroughly enjoy every second of learning and watching. Let’s put that out on a tray.... nice.
I remember in OCS (1989) during the final patrolling exercises in the woods, some of the Ham & Chicken Loaf had spoiled. We had already been in the woods (New Yorks Hudson River Valley) 5 days with constant rain, freezing nights, and half of the 85 who went into the field had already been medevacked to the rear with upper respiratory problems, broken bones (from slipping on rocks), etc. I was the RTO when a radio call came in instructing our squad not to eat the ham & chicken loaf MRE, it had made a dozen trainees sick and they had to be pulled from the field. That left the final miserable 25 of us out in the rain and the cold, at which point we gathered up all the ham and chicken loaf MREs we had and "ATE THEM". Hoping against hope to exit that miserable field problem via food poisoning. Unfortunately, our MRE(s) were all good and we finished the 9-day field exercise. I used to actually like both the Ham Loaf and the Ham & Chicken loaf. Some of the MRE(s) in the 80(s) had John Wayne Bars. They looked like small lengths of compressed 2 x 2 sections of extruded sawdust wood product. But they were sugary and yummy. Good times!!!!
I worked as a USDA inspector for 25 years MRE production plants majority of the time. Highest standards of Sanitation processing packaging of materials. Exceptionally safe and healthy products. No expenses spared in these facilities. Continuous inspection throughout the process
I worked at a civilian meat plant on the kill floor. My 1st day I was stamping "USDA" on the sides of beef. They told me to get someone else to look at anything that didn't look good. I eat a lot of chicken now... like THAT'S going to be any better for me.
I was army infantry in 1981, the dehydrated fruit were great, especially the strawberries!! The chocolate nut cake was the best and the cherry cake was really good too.
My Dad served in the Guards from the 1970's to the 90's and he is thoroughly enjoying these 80's MRE videos of yours with me haha. He remembers when they switched from C Rations to the new MRE's. He said he remembers this exact meal and loved it. Kinda funny cause he was telling me about how the crackers and peanut butter had a different flavor but were great right when you were explaining why. This was a trip down memory lane for him, and I enjoy seeing (and hearing) about it. Thanks for doing this Steve.
I was 8. I went in the Army 94-97 and was in Europe. I always thought the Army was probably so cool back in the 80s practicing killing commies and hoping not to get nuked. But maybe that’s from watching Red Dawn and War Games and the like.
I tried to avoid the ham/chicken loaf if I could but it was still superior to the beans and wienies. Cold hotdogs covered in preservative goo were hands-down the worst MRE.
Maqaroon I was eating this garbage when you were born. Everyone liked them when they first came out as they were different. That wore off quickly and most of us wanted our C Rats back.
Since I got food poisoning twice from C-Rations I was really happy to see MREs come along. Now I keep 2 cases from the commissary at all times just in case of earthquakes.
Every time I watch one of Steve's reviews, I expect to hear that he is in the hospital being treated for botulism. He always seems to survive. Nice ! 🤣
USNVA11 In the comments on one video he said he didn't have health insurance. Now I mom out and worry about him, hope he will go to the doctor or ER if he needs to.
The preservative chemicals in the food take an accumulative tool, in time if he continues to consume this garbage he will eventually suffer the consequences.
As a first soldier to eat these on active duty from 83 - 86 , may I suggest that you use ice water to rehydrate your fruit. Strawberrys were my personal favorite, ice was rare, but try it.
I'm surprised no MRE company has sponsored your channel yet. They could send you MREs to test yourself, some to give away to viewers. It would be tight
Robert Bisceglia I probably worded that badly. I didn't mean the actual manufacturers of the MREs, but there's lots of distributors on eBay and websites and stuff...I meant one of them. Steve gets hundreds of thousands of views per video, if someone were to sponsor a video(s) by supplying the MRE for free and in return Steve can shout out and give links to their store.
Jerf The three major MRE companies (Wornick, Ameriqual, Sopackco) all have their own lines of civilian MREs, but those are the only ones they can legally give away. Military MREs are "not for resale" and "property of the Department of Defense". Although, that doesn't stop them from showing up on eBay and in surplus stores anyway, and the military hasn't really put a lot of effort into chasing down resellers in quite a few years. (Not since Katrina, anyway.)
OMG, what a great video to stumble upon. Smiled the entire time and had some good laughs. Transported me back to the first MRE I ever had in Marine Corps boot camp, September - November 1985. What a fantastic presentation. Glad you got to experience a well-preserved one.
Imagine the chicken soul that was awaiting her release to the afterlife for all these years just waiting for someone to eat that MRE then having to watch her former body get eaten....😔 RIP 80's chicken your soul can rest now 🐔 👻
Hey Brian! Thanks so much man. The average video does take a lot of time to edit - this one was about 8 or 9 hours of editing. The 24hr rations take a bit longer.
You really do a great job with the video production. You're really relaxing to watch and to listen to. I noticed that you may have picked up a new dishwasher. :-) I got one as well and what a difference. Greetings from Arizona.
Freeze-dried fruit is extremely efficient, extremely good, and also extremely expensive to make. I miss it too. An Army Reserve teacher of mine let me have his training MREs, the first ones I ever had, when I was in high school (though he always stole the pound cake). Some of them had the last editions of freeze-dried fruit.

Right? How did i even end up here replying?

This is my Friday night...
I agree super weird but interesting
I ate that same MRE in the field at Ft Dix, NJ in 1985. Wish I had saved some of them.
That's a federal prison now.
Is it that good?
I setup have a pork patty and a beef patty mre. They were my favorite.
I had that one on the march out to TA50 at Ft Lwood, MO in 1987.
Alexander the great no it isn’t? It’s currently a joint base and called McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst
Steve is, quite possibly, the Gordon Ramsey of the apocalypse.
Everyone else loots the stores and you'll see Steve breaking into the museum. hahaha

I love how your videos never really change. I'm watching this 4 years after you made it and it looks just like your recent videos.
It seems that youtube recommendations brought us all together again

Hello family
Well, so what can we discuss?
Unity brother.
Nobody wants the 80s to end!! I‘m the same age as this MRE 😂
Maqaroon I love your channel!! So great to see so many people watching a guy eat MRE's lol
Maqaroon
I was eating this garbage when you were born. Everyone liked them when they first came out as they were different. That wore off quickly and most of us wanted our C Rats back.
You're a failures thats why its not 80's any more
I joined the Navy in 84. '84 was a good year.
@@ardvarkkkkk1 What were in the C ratings?
That stuff looks more dangerous than combat.

Lol!
Breh yo pic funny as fk too.

I was thinking the same thing as I watched this! lolol
The preservative chemicals in the food take an accumulative tool, in time if he continues to consume this garbage he will eventually suffer the consequences.
Hey Steve. I love your enthusiasm. Thanks for bringing positivity to the world. Greetings from Germany.
"M.R.E peanut butter....it always tastes unique...maybe because it's fortified with nutrients." Or maybe because it's 35 years old XD
Nah, that shit is still unique even nowadays xD
Well it could be both. 😁
Dangledorf oh yeah yeah
or because they mixed it with Crisco.
No it's funny tasting even now
As a first soldier to eat these on active duty from 83 - 86 , may I suggest that you use ice water to rehydrate your fruit.
Strawberrys were my personal favorite, ice was rare, but try it.

I’m a fan of the jingles he edits when tapping the spoon after stirring on a lot of his videos. I love these videos
It's pretty dangerous. They probably aren't allowed to be sold with intent to consume.
+SpearM3064 tracking down the people who sell them would be a waste of money in my opinion
Maxwell Buhler Correct in Canada they can't be sold as "Food" for liability reasons.
To be honest... this looks tasty as hell.
I think u too hungry rn
Too bad hell aint tasty
Booty Hunter lol.
you are such a classy man.
MREs are suprisingly great
idk what brought me here but I couldn't leave. Perplexed is an understatement
OMG, what a great video to stumble upon. Smiled the entire time and had some good laughs. Transported me back to the first MRE I ever had in Marine Corps boot camp, September - November 1985. What a fantastic presentation. Glad you got to experience a well-preserved one.
Came for the eating (for some reason)
Stayed for the comments
The chicken in that MRE died before the Soviet Union was dissolved.
It died while Reagan was still in his first term. shudder.
That’s so weird to think😫
8:46
Imagine the chicken soul that was awaiting her release to the afterlife for all these years just waiting for someone to eat that MRE then having to watch her former body get eaten....😔 RIP 80's chicken your soul can rest now 🐔 👻
Death to the Soviet chicken. ;)
Steve you are so therapeutic to watch. Thanks bro

Thank you Steve 1989. Always love to watch your videos and thank you for all the work and hours you put into these videos with editing.
Hey Brian! Thanks so much man. The average video does take a lot of time to edit - this one was about 8 or 9 hours of editing. The 24hr rations take a bit longer.

Well I sure do appreciate it!! Respect!!!
Steve1989MREInfo You are a trooper.
You really do a great job with the video production. You're really relaxing to watch and to listen to. I noticed that you may have picked up a new dishwasher. :-) I got one as well and what a difference. Greetings from Arizona.

Good eye
Imagine the shits after these meals.
Probably looks and smells the same.
Lol what shits? These things have almost no fiber, if you subsist on these shitting is a rare and difficult thing
Usually, after eating MRE's in the field back in the 80's, you had one poop per day or none. One big turd. Easy to bury. No fuss.
Nope u gonna be to busy trying to shit but nothing
MREs make your shits rock hard
Freeze-dried fruit is extremely efficient, extremely good, and also extremely expensive to make. I miss it too. An Army Reserve teacher of mine let me have his training MREs, the first ones I ever had, when I was in high school (though he always stole the pound cake). Some of them had the last editions of freeze-dried fruit.
Have watched so many of Steve's videos and this one is best so far as I am an 80s child myself!!
