      Susan Hamilton I have a awesome husband and we did live a lot of great adventures but we are older now also and he has Parkinson’s, so our adventures are less daring, but I believe there are many more adventures in our future journey. I’m on the look out for them! :)

    This is what all people should ask themselves. Can I survive without anyones help for at least 6 months. Remember not to take too much the pollen is there for a reason Just like commercial bee keepers taking all the honey from bees and then feeding the sugar water as a substitute for the healthy stuff. Taking too much will not allow it to reproduce and then you will have less plants in following years or less pollen producing plants.

      I was thinking this as I watched the harvest, and I believe the same way, when you only take half as much, it tells the plant to make more next time. Great advice!

    I wish my husband and I were younger and starting out. Over this past summer I've discovered a love for nature for homesteading for providing a sustainable future for my family. I live in a small coal mining community so I don't have a lot of room. I do have a garden 4 chickens and have taught myself to can. Thank you for your inspiration!

    • @MyCrazyfull
      @MyCrazyfull 4 роки тому

      Did the presence of the coal mining industry in your town draw you into wanting a to be in charge of your own sustainable future? ive been learning about it in school and im just wondering what the perception of those companies is for someone who knows about sustainable living

    • @urbanhomesteadingchannel1813
      @urbanhomesteadingchannel1813 4 роки тому +3

      @@MyCrazyfull I don't really have an answer for you. I know I should be concerned about the coal mining but as it's the way the majority of my state makes a living I can't be too harsh on coal mining. My biggest concern is my husband is in construction. And as construction is a seasonal occupation we struggle during the winter. We play so much time catching up during the summer that there's nothing left for saving. My goal is to be able to to provide for my family during the winter without spending money on groceries then other bills and such would be able to be taken care of. I don't suppose this makes much sense.

    We started this kind of lifestyle 12 years ago, on a 5 acre block. We were borrowing from the broader, natural landscape for the connectivity though. Then more blocks got sold, more neighbours moved in with their domestic dogs, started building dirt tracks for their motorbikes and dirt buggies. Goodbye paradise. Our 12 years of hard work, to invite the broader landscape into a tiny block (in comparison) ended this year, when we had to start fencing. Neighbours were using our land for their adventures (causing erosion) and their dogs were always in conflict with our chickens. It was a very sad day, to realise our connection with nature had become rural-suburbia.
    While this lifestyle is completely possible, and I enjoyed watching this video and commentary on community involvement - you really do need the right kind of community, doing similar things. That's why rubarb and eggs were available, from neighbours. Because they lived that kind of lifestyle too. It's great to see that, but be warned, it can change in a lifetime too. Rather drastically.

    • @bearcreekmassage7845
      @bearcreekmassage7845 5 років тому +1

      Hey Chris,
      You are absolutely correct. We do need community to manage this. And, we are lucky enough to be in an area where the majority of folks are interested in keeping this kind of lifestyle alive.

      There is no need. When you harvest the pollen, you are actually helping to fertilize the cattails. So they increase in number every year. I planted about 20 two years before this video was taken. They are increasing in number by hundreds every year. They are wind polinated.

      Hello
      I saved my butt off and bought the land with cash (we are fairly remote and thus it was not outragesouly priced). Started in a tent and payed for everything as we went along. We build it ourselves with help from a carpenter that we hired to help and a few others along the way. I do preserve things in jars. You may enjoy my book which details my learning journey from city-girl (born and raised in Vancouver) to sustainable farmer and, yes, hunter!

    I would be really happy if someone could explain the financial side of such a life style. Do you live just by eating pollens? Some homesteaders talk about their Costco hauls. But where does the money come from?

    I have started my own organic garden now as well. I don't like all these pesticides etc either, shop bought produce isn't great these days...you just don't know what you are eating. Also fruit is picked far too green has no flavour.

    What I don't understand is where these homestead people get startup money and maintain this lifestyle. Land costs money, equipment to cut down the trees costs money, taxes cost money, healthcare costs money, I could go on and on. It seems that a lot of homesteaders are already wealthy and they make this lifestyle seem home grown instead of externally funded.

      That's a good question Carlos. To start off the land in this video was rural and needed them to work it. It was most likely cheap with low taxes. Secondly there are many ways to live this way without being rich. Personally i drive truck, i have a class A CDL. It allowed me to save to buy land. I drive a local seasonal job in the winter now, when my tiny farm requires less daily attention. I make more than enough money between the two. I could survive and pay my taxes without the truck job, however i like to save more money. To sum this up, all you need is hard work and creativity. You can find a way to live the life you want.

      @@justinm9892 Justin, thank you for your response. Your way of affording this lifestyle is realistic. I'm at a stage in my life where I'm working a proffesional job to be able to afford this lifestyle in the future. Maybe I'm wrong and can actually afford this type of lifestyle now while I'm young and healthy. Thank you.

      Hello Carlos,
      This land is rural, and in a not too desireable area per se. So, it did not cost an arm and a leg. Also, as I stated in the video, we started in a tent and we pay as we go. So, yes, chainsaw cost money. But the tent and the saw got us started for very little money. We hold jobs. I am self employed and do not make a lot of money but I have a high degree of flexibility. So we cook our own food, make our own wine, make our own sausages, etc.
      We do not aspire to the modern day high cost "instant" lifestyle. We do not pay lots for interest on debt etc. We live within our means. We drive very old vehicles that are paid for. We buy used clothes. And save money whereever we can.
      The true meaning of homesteading as we know it is no longer achievable. Taxes, insurance, healthcare, etc renders it so.
      Cheers,
      Kristeva

    Have you considered to what extent gathering the pollen which is central to regenerating the cat-tails may or may not interfere or slow down that regeneration? For example, when foraging for edible fungi, you must leave enough of those fungal fruiting bodies to allow the underground mycelial mass to continue to be strong and healthy and expansive. What mechanisms in the cattail depend on sufficient pollen and are there guidelines for gathering it?

    • @stolenharvest5283
      @stolenharvest5283 4 роки тому

      Hello Harely,
      I do consider all those things you mention. And, consider that whenever collecting anything from the wild. Always leave behind enough for reproduction and the bees to feed on etc. The pollen is what fertilizes the cattail. And, when you collect you are actually helping (to some extent) to fertilize the plant in the same way that wind would. You cannot actually (or I certainly don't) harvest in such a way that is so efficient that there is none left for reproduction.
      cheers,

    I love this idea, but how do people bring in income? These mini docs are awesome and so inspiring, but they never cover where the individuals have money coming in from. They had two vehicles. How do they pay for gas? Do they still work? If so, what kind of job affords them the time to forage from the land? I would LOVE to do this, but I couldn’t start without large enough savings to purchase the land and materials, or cash flow to maintain the lifestyle. So, how does this couple do it?

      Giving your kids access to education helps give them choices and if/when they tire of the urban consumerism they can generate income to move towards a different lifestyle. When kids get to teen years and beyond it's your time to make choices too. Good luck man and keep positive.

    Is it possible that this year's supply of pollen is dwindled because last year you took the majority of the pollen? So there wasn't enough to re-polinate this year's crop? I'm not a gardener by any means. I'm just asking.
