I know this video's been up for a while, but I just wanted to say thanks as I found this super helpful to start working my setup out. I now have a 12 channel Behringer mixer with 3 mics, 2 guitars (1 through Line 6 amp, 1 through Valeton GP200), 1 bass (through Spark Go), and an Alesis electric drum kit plgged in. I then run out to a single PA speaker if we want sound, or headphone out if we want silent. Also run a line out from the master to a little Tascam recorder if we want to record anything. Just one addition, I use a Lekato MS-1 wireless IEM system. It's cheap ($50 for a transmitter and receiver) and I have a single transmitter paired to 6 receivers, so everyone gets the same mix, but the headphones are wireless which is nice and avoids the need for the splitters. Really grateful you posted this video, it was a great help!
Nice. I love silent rehearsals, been doing it for 10 years with many bands. I love that you can share the metronome and listen to every detail of each member, therefore your playing just gets better and better, more clean.
Right? I love how precise it sounds. I kind of think a really fun way to practice might be to get an electric set going through a PA system at a medium volume so you can play without needing headphones but also at a volume that isn’t painful lol

Mira, en mi experiencia, hay dos maneras de hacerlo. 1) con una interfaz de audio que tenga suficientes entradas y salidas para los integrantes que quieres, la ventaja de esta es que vas a poder tener monitoreos totalmente independientes para cada miembro, la desventaja es que necesitas una CP y software a fuerza. 2) (la que yo uso actualmente), una mezcladora o mixer que tenga suficientes entradas y salidas, la ventaja es que no dependes de CP/software, la desventaja es que típicamente, las mixers tienen entre 2 y 4 salidas, entonces algunos musicos tendran que compartir salidas. Yo uso una behringher xenyx 2222, que tiene como 16 entradas y 3 salidas independientes, el bajo y la bataca compartimos una mezcla, las dos guitarras otra mezcla y el cantante otra mezcla. Metemos todos los instrumentos, incluyendo mi bateria Roland y el metronomo a la mixer. Cualquier duda me dices hermano.

@@DepressedCapitalist Si, necesitarías una mezcladora que tenga las suficientes entradas para todos los instrumentos y pues 1 salida independiente para cada uno. Respecto a los amplis/splitter de audifonos, no son del todo necesarios, porque cada salida de la mixer deberia de tener su propio potenciometro, sin embargo si es recomendado, para tener mejor control (yo si uso 2 amplificadores de audifonos) y calidad, ahora, como son salidas independientes, tendria que ser un ampli por cada salida, porque no puedes meter 5 salidas en un mismo ampli sabes?
I tried to do this in 2008, yet the drum kit was the weakest link. I paid about $700 for an Alesis kit that just wasn’t up to the task. Now I have a great Roland kit that I got for $550! So going to try it again. I’m here for pointers. I heard you say you prefer the sound - I’ll bet it’s good, yet there’s a thing called “skull candy” where headphones usually make things sound artificially amazeballs! I suspect analog rehearsals would have to come into play at some point. YET - I think bands get tighter by practicing at lower levels and for that reason (aside from the obvious monetary/bothersome musicians reason) it’s a plus against analog. Mostly I want to chime in and say a decent Roland kit with dual-trigger mesh heads and decent “brain” is the most crucial aspect. You want it to be responsive. You guys nailed it! Sounded great! Also - good guitar playing brah! At least I know it can be done. Cheers!
Great video. This is not only for apartments, but also condos. Givien the living expense, those days of practicing with acoustic drums at long gone for many of us. One thing I learned you can use headphone splitters, I actually use headphone mixers. There are so many cables now. I would like to eventually go wireless...but still trying to figure out how that can be done with headphones. By the way, you guys sound great! Thank you for sharing.
I would love to go wireless, too, but darn do those wireless in-ear monitors cost a lot of money lol. You're totally right about the cost of living. When I was a kid and everybody's parents had a house with a garage, it was pretty easy to find a place to rehearse and get loud. Now, in my late 20s with everybody I know renting a condo or an apartment and lots of people having roommates, that is just not on the table lol.
Nope, not at all on the table, I been waiting for a better living situation in the future, one that includes a chance to play my drums. Then I got a reality check… ordered a Roland TD17KVX-s, I’m selling my two sets,?harware , cymbals… all of it- it will help recover the $1609.00 the Roland set me back. Times are a changing, be part of the change or be part of the past!!
I'm in the process of making this happen. I use an Axe Fx3 and had an edrumset + bass sans amp I have a little more going on as my main computer has an audio interface and then to avoid running even more cables i just remote into laptop thats connected to my axe FX. I think i want to actually leave that laptop there and let the drummer control the mixer. I could use laptop to make changes but i don't anticipate that. If i go this route the only thing left i have to do is play with my mixer to figure out a way to only send my mic to aux or headphones and the guitar to the speakers and headphones This is literally only for me to do while practicing alone so people would hear guitar while im practicing singing and not ONLY me singing :)
Thanks, totally a feasible solution, will get a mixer. I think we can do it better with a headphone amp so each musician can have a volume control for their headphones.
Yes! That's a brilliant idea. We had something similar when we did some live tracking at a studio as a full band. We each had individual controls for how loud each instrument was and it was a game changer
Been doing this for years except I use a cheap focusrite scarlett audio interface and reaper. And for the drums I use GGD matt halpern P4 kit which sounds absolutely phenomenal and better than anything found in the e kit and you just need to know how to set up the midi. You have alot more control using reaper and can actually record yourselves. Also another way to make it even quieter is to lift up the kit off the floor with a small platform or atleast laying down a thick carpet and the major issues are doors, windows, and adjoining walls.
@@Upside_Down_Guitar_Guy Theres a video on youtube somewhere were he shows you how to set up your ekit to trigger the GGD drum sounds. It mightve been the dude from GGD or maybe a random. If I can find it on my saved list ill post it as the basic premise works for all that type of stuff
@@Upside_Down_Guitar_Guy no, you are supposed to use the mixer like your doing but instead of the splitters for the headphones you connect the headphone amp into the headphone output of the mixer. The sound is more even and every one have their individual headphone volume

I live in a house by myself and I still practice with electronic drums because my house is just 20' from the next house over and my neighbor plays real drums sometimes and it's freaking annoying to hear. TBH, this is more like a recording setup than a live setup. How is the transition to stage play without headphones? I have to think that would be incredibly jarring. I also value the movement of air from an amp irl. It honestly changes the output of my guitars significantly to play really loudly. I'd miss that, but this seems like a decent compromise if you can handle the transition to stage.
I'm glad you brought this up because the transition to a live setup is important. From my perspective as a guitarist/singer, I've not had any problems transitioning to a live setup with E-drums/a quiet kit (the bar I play at sometimes has a folk kit that isn't too loud) HOWEVER, I have been playing live since high school and I only started playing with headphones (sometimes) in 2020, so I already had a lot of experience in live settings with drums/amps/ambient noise before getting this setup You make a great point; going from playing with headphones to playing your first gig in a loud bar is probably going to be a jarring transition. And you are right, this setup was inspired by a recording setup we had at Lost Ark Studio in San Diego that I thought would be a lot of fun to rehearse with. I actually think I sound a lot better live ever since getting an HX Stomp because I use my Headrush 1x8 as a monitor and have full control of my sound on my pedalboard
I'm looking into going a similar set up. Currently playing in a basement with a lot of of echo. I am considering having a similar set up to you only going straight into interface and then play through DAW. Thanks for the video man!

Just had our first silent practice today in an extra bedroom. Went really well! Got a few kinks to figure out, but we were pumped!
Im in the process of setting a silent studio up. The only thing I haven't got is the headphones and it seems that a good set wont be cheap. Multiplly that by the number in the band and it could turn out expensive, I also use a Behringer splitter HA400. I have a soundkraft signature 12 mixer and pod HD500X as well as a Spider 3 Line 6 amp also 4 iMacs and lots of software as well as 3 Mackie Thump active speaker 15 inch but again I cant use them in my on bbed flat I also have an electronic drum set....... as mentioned 4 x good quality headphones is going to be costly

Good question! With the method that I show here, you wouldn't be able to do that, but I know it's possible. I believe there are other headphone mixers out there, though, that can do that. I've heard good things about the Behringer headphone amplifiers!
Do you plug your guitars straight into mixer's line inputs? I've heard that doing that would cause the guitar signal to sound very quiet and you'd also lose a lot of tone. Do you use DI boxes? Or does your mixer have a switch for line input/instrument input?
I didn't use any DI boxes, I just put the HX stomp and Helix outputs directly into the line inputs of the mixer. I think it worked well because Helix stuff is all made with the intention of going straight into a mixer or an FRFR speaker anyway.
Good question! I sang into a dynamic microphone, an SM57. I know that this isn’t what people traditionally use for singing, but I like to sing into dynamic microphones and situations where sound is really messy, because they only pick up the sound that is right in front of them, unlike condenser mics, which will try to pick up more of the sound in the room.
Headphone splitters are good but what mixer or digital mixer has an output for a full band? I think a mixer that records each instrument per track on a daw is perfect for this.
Get a headphone amplifier instead.. 4, 8 10 channels etc.. One example is the Behringer HA8000. From the Mixer out to the Headphone Amp in to the band's earphones.. 😁
Good question! I sent the audio into my audio interface so logic would capture the rehearsal and recorded separately with my video camera, then recombined the audio and video in Final Cut

Hey! There are a ton of different combinations of equipment that would work. Here’s what you need: E-Drum set (we used allessis crimson se) Some sort of direct input capable amp modeler like a line 6 helix, HX stomp, strum on iridium, walrus m1 (I can’t remember the name of the walrus one but they have an amp modeler) A mixer with enough inputs and outputs for your band Microphones (we used Shure SM57s and SM58s) Mic stands, of course, and all the cords you’ll need, and some headphones with long enough cords for your setup
Yup! I play with the strings reversed lol. I started playing upside down kind of an accident but didn’t know for a while and by the time I realized it I was too far in. Honestly, I like playing like this! I have no idea how to play the normal way lol but I think it’s great to use your dominant hand to fret. What do you think?
Thanks! Not with this method, no. I’ve had issues with lag with online jamming stuff like JamKazam. Analog methods like this or Jamhub typically don’t have issues with lag
Good question! You would need to put the backing track into the mixer via and auxiliary cord from your phone or computer into the mixer. Alternatively, if you have a helix or an HX stomp, you can plug that into your computer while you are also putting the output into the mixer, and then play the backing track from your computer and it will play out from your mixer
Firstly, I like your video very much! its really good. Secondly, I disagree, I have same problem as you, I can not exceed 40db without my neighbours hearing it but the response from a real amp, is so much more musical than a digital sim. especially if you can feel the actual vibrations of the sound coming from the speakers. i think a good analogy, is like driving a car with your hands on the wheel and feeling the road, or driving a car remotely using a tablet or control stick. anyhow, keep up the videos, they're top notch!
Thanks! I think you're right that, for some people, a real amp is always going ot be preferable. Other people like the sound of a modeler going through a PA or through a PowerCab. There really is something about the movement of the air that is special. A really cool solution might be to play with electronic drums going through a PA at a medium volume and then being able to put your amps loud, but not so loud that they cause hearing damage lol. Who knows!
Lmao you make a good point. I saw an ad for this vocal isolation box that’s supposed to make your vocals mostly silent so you don’t bother your neighbors, but I’m not sure if it really works

I have an old school headphone amp. It’s also a Beringer! Maybe get one of those and run all your headphones into that. Individual volume and mix.

Nice video, you don't need headphone splitters just get a Behringer headphone amp and each will have their own headphone out and independent volume.
Wow! I just looked that up. They’re only $35 bucks in sweet water! That definitely seems better than a mixer for rehearsing

You can eventually look into using a headphone amp too.
I’ve seen that the Behringer headphone amp is pretty solid for this sort of thing! Definitely a cheaper option than the setup I use here

Good question! I sang into a dynamic microphone, an SM57. I know that this isn’t what people traditionally use for singing, but I like to sing into dynamic microphones and situations where sound is really messy, because they only pick up the sound that is right in front of them, unlike condenser mics, which will try to pick up more of the sound in the room.

Headphone splitters are good but what mixer or digital mixer has an output for a full band?
I think a mixer that records each instrument per track on a daw is perfect for this.

Get a headphone amplifier instead.. 4, 8 10 channels etc.. One example is the Behringer HA8000. From the Mixer out to the Headphone Amp in to the band's earphones.. 😁

Good question! I sent the audio into my audio interface so logic would capture the rehearsal and recorded separately with my video camera, then recombined the audio and video in Final Cut

Hey! There are a ton of different combinations of equipment that would work. Here’s what you need:
E-Drum set (we used allessis crimson se)
Some sort of direct input capable amp modeler like a line 6 helix, HX stomp, strum on iridium, walrus m1 (I can’t remember the name of the walrus one but they have an amp modeler)
A mixer with enough inputs and outputs for your band
Microphones (we used Shure SM57s and SM58s)
Mic stands, of course, and all the cords you’ll need, and some headphones with long enough cords for your setup

Yup! I play with the strings reversed lol. I started playing upside down kind of an accident but didn’t know for a while and by the time I realized it I was too far in. Honestly, I like playing like this! I have no idea how to play the normal way lol but I think it’s great to use your dominant hand to fret. What do you think?

Thanks! Not with this method, no. I’ve had issues with lag with online jamming stuff like JamKazam. Analog methods like this or Jamhub typically don’t have issues with lag
What mixer are you using in this video?
The cheapest Behringer I was able to find. I think it cost me $95 when I got it ~5 years ago
how do you play a backing track through this?
Good question! You would need to put the backing track into the mixer via and auxiliary cord from your phone or computer into the mixer. Alternatively, if you have a helix or an HX stomp, you can plug that into your computer while you are also putting the output into the mixer, and then play the backing track from your computer and it will play out from your mixer
Firstly, I like your video very much! its really good.
Secondly, I disagree, I have same problem as you, I can not exceed 40db without my neighbours hearing it but the response from a real amp, is so much more musical than a digital sim. especially if you can feel the actual vibrations of the sound coming from the speakers. i think a good analogy, is like driving a car with your hands on the wheel and feeling the road, or driving a car remotely using a tablet or control stick.

Thanks! I think you're right that, for some people, a real amp is always going ot be preferable. Other people like the sound of a modeler going through a PA or through a PowerCab. There really is something about the movement of the air that is special.
A really cool solution might be to play with electronic drums going through a PA at a medium volume and then being able to put your amps loud, but not so loud that they cause hearing damage lol. Who knows!

Lmao you make a good point. I saw an ad for this vocal isolation box that’s supposed to make your vocals mostly silent so you don’t bother your neighbors, but I’m not sure if it really works
