Power pop is the best genre :) Great overview. Nick Lowe is also up there for me. Have you done any reviews or rundowns of modern power pop bands? I've really grown to like White Reaper, and also Kurt Baker's got some pretty good stuff out there.

Fantastic selection, and SO happy you're giving Sloan some love, one of my favorite bands, and Power Pop genre in general. Their albums, aside from the current reissues, are pretty hard to find (impossible in some cases) or too cost prohibitive (for me, anyway). And, my God, Teenage Fanclub hasn't released a sub-par album ever, so so good. As I am watching this I'm thinking to myself, "Man, where's the Nick Lowe...?", and then relaxed when you brought out Pure Pop (or, Jesus Of Cool, depending where you are in the world), so thank you for that as I would have hadd a coronary if you hadn't! :) Fantastic selection, can only think of one that's a favorote of mine and that would be Dwight Twilly's Sincerely, almost (not quite) up there with Pure Pop, and one I discovered way late in the game.

Hi Ian! Sloan have been a very consistent band, and that's why I love them so much! I've never seen an original vinyl album of theirs...yeah, must be near impossible to find! I'm glad my inclusion of Nick Lowe satisfied you! I couldn't leave him out, of course! He's too important! I need to get educated on Dwight Twilley. Thank you for bringing him up! Peace.

The Easybeats - Friday on my Mind
The Move - Messages from the Country
    Big Star - Radio City
Badfinger - Wish You Were Here
Bram Tchaikovsky - Strange Man, Changed Man
    Cheap Trick - In Color
The Grays - Ro Sham Bo
Ben Folds Five - Whatever and Ever Amen
    Sloan - Navy Blues
    Weezer - Maladroit
The Raspberries and The Cars are great, but best served in a hits collection.

Hi Hanna- this video is definitely up my alley! Nice synopsis of Power Pop genre. I can’t argue with any of your top 10 selections or honorable mentions. I have the majority of the albums you showed, but I still need to check out Blue Ash. Additional favorites I’d mention are Material Issue 'International Pop Overthrow', Eugene Edwards 'My Favorite Revolution', The Someloves 'Something or Other', Tommy Keene 'Songs From the Film' and The Keys s/t (obscure 80’s UK vinyl only release produced by Joe Jackson). Have a great Sunday! - Matt

I thought I'd slot this comment in here rather than start a new one, I'm pleased that someone pointed out the name of the band is ''SHOES'' (not the Shoes)
ther is no 'the' in their name. Though it's an easy mistake to make
(see common mistake, Eagles often called 'The' Eagles, there isn't any 'The' in their name also'),
I think there is a different band called 'The Shoes', so watch out when you search for ''SHOES'' @@TheOmahaIntrovert

The Knack were tremendous musicians, and that first album is great. Yellow Pills is a true power-pop classic, and so glad you mentioned Shoes! Elvis Costello has one of the strongest and most complete catalogs in all of music. Read his autobiography a couple of years ago, what a great read that was. The Posies are awesome, have seen them a number of times, a very under-appreciated band. And a big yes to XTC Drums and Wires and Black Sea. Nice to see you mention the Replacements, actually opened for them way back when. Cheap Trick was my first concert, and one of my favorite bands ever. I had a feeling the Records and Badfinger would be up there, and just knew Big Star would be number one because they were absolutely enthralling as a band and had so many fantastic songs. You included everything I hoped you would, thank you so much!

Excellent video Hanna. It took me a long time to watch because I kept popping to Amazon to listen to the MP3 snippets.
I was pleased to see Teenage Fanclub recommend although my preference is for Bandwagonesque. I bought their next few albums as soon as they came out but there didn't seem enough variety so I always stuck with my first. There is a good compilation though. I was also pleased to hear Nick Lowe mentioned. Jesus of Cool is great.
I went on a buying spree last December and January (well before the lockdown) and snapped up four Matthew Sweet albums, something by Sloan and a few others but I haven't heard them enough yet to know how I feel. My listening to genres seems to go in phases and you may have inspired me to launch myself into power pop for a few weeks.

Regarding The dbs, there were an amazing number of bands that came out the high schools in W-S during the late sixties and early seventies. Mitch Easter being the other most noted. But there were also several others, including one called Secret Service that I saw back in college. They released one indie EP. Very enjoyable video, take care, Elliott

    Hi Hanna
Very good video you did a fine job defining Power Pop which is quite difficult to do. I can't believe how many of the albums you showed I have, but also some I was unaware of. I will be on the look out for those.
My Favourites are The Flamin Groovies , saw them again last year they have a big following in the UK. Of course Big Star and the Raspberries and an Australian band, The Hoodoo Guru's. I also love a guy called Van Duran from Memphis who hung about at Ardent Studio's where Big Star recorded. His debut album 'Are you Serious' is a classic, influenced by Rungren and Emmit Rhodes. Unfortunately it was his only released LP and sunk without trace. Though my number one would be Pezband who came from Chicago and made a great LP called 'Laughter in the Dark'. Though so much great music like you I could name dozens. I would be hard pressed to name a top ten, who to leave out. I think power pop is not taken that seriously in the UK and bands like the Groovies and Nick Lowe are labelled Pub Rock. Fantastic job and thanks.

Hi - I just saw this video. Nice job. Here’s an idea for your next Power Pop video: take all the Power Pop artists you mention here and even some you didn’t (hello Dwight Twilley Band and Phil Seymour solo), and combine two of your fave albums by them like you did with your number 1 “album” by Big Star. Pick an album’s worth of your faves from those two albums, and see how your top 10 list looks then! The first artist you mention in the start of this video - Raspberries - is easily my #1. They released 3 albums in less than 2 years that were loaded with both hits and deep track gems, and this feat made them the sole architects of Power Pop IMHO.

"Something/Anything" is a great start for T Rundgren's music. Another is his 2nd album "Runt: The Ballad of..." His first is called "Runt" as well. The one I'm mentioning is the one with the cover where he's seated at a piano with a noose around his neck. It has 2 of his most wonderful songs: "Long Flowing Robe" and "Boat on the Charles" but the whole album's great. "A Wizard, A True Star" is a great listen as well, but this is where his jarring transitions from experimental music to pure pop came into play for the first time. If you're okay with some weirdness, it's a great album. "Sometimes I Don't Know What to Feel," another of his greatest songs, is on that one.

Kudos on your love of Sloan, too! Between the Bridges is a great one. I'd love to pick up some of their vinyl reissues. I think they are one of the power pop bands I really connected with early on in my power pop journey!
Stay tuned for an in-the-works Material Issue documentary. Hopefully it is released sometime this year.

Hey Hanna. Black Vinyl Shoes is great. Cool to see The Flashing Lights get mentioned. Jason Falkner has some terrific solo albums for sure. Especially the first two. I think a lot of people dismiss Nada Surf as a one hit wonder but they have a lot of great modern power pop records. In Reverse is high on my list of albums needing a vinyl release. Badfinger is delicious. There were a couple posthumous Pete Ham albums released in the 90's I really dug. Great discussion. The list is endless. Take care. Cheers!

"Cool Thanks"😂 What can I say but you have your sh*t down Hanna! Well, you always do but my word, just rattling off gem after gem here. And I don't just mean the music - this is a top notch presentation👌 Interesting history at the beginning, never knew the Townshend genesis of 'power pop'. Can't argue on the 3 Bs though the Beach boys a less obvious one. And then your 'also-rans' was a lengthy, star-studded cast - a few folks faves might be in there!! 😅A few new ones for me as well, so I'll be watching this over and over to pick them off and have a listen (eg, never tried Nick Lowe's solo stuff; the 'UK big star' group fascinates me). And your top 10 was the right mix of classics and surprises. Just a joy to hear you talk about these groups :) Now I'm close to having some music to send you that will straddle both this video and your shoegaze - I don't know if you'll change your top 10 but I think some might make a revised list of you ever feel the need to go down that path. Anyway, fantastic stuff and highly enjoyable, great to see you churning out such goodness. Cheers- Dean

Thanks for the praise on my video, Dean! I spent some time preparing for it. Putting the top 10 together was a bit trying! Glad you liked the presentation. I learned something about Pete coining "power pop," too so I was excited to bring that up! Those early Nick Lowe albums are gold. Honestly, I had never listened to him either until last year and he quickly became a favorite with those 2 albums I showed! You're in for a treat if you've never heard The Records (UK Big Star) :-) I have seen their first album (the US version) around here lots of times for around $5. Hope you can find at least one of their first 2 albums easily over there. Otherwise there is a fantastic CD comp called Smashes, Crashes, and Near Misses that has everything you need on it!
Wow, you have some music to send me soon? Power pop and shoegaze?! No way. No doubt that will be an epic bunch of tunes if you are curating it. Love your music taste! Cheers, Dean. You rock!

This "show"(?) happened to POP up after I watched Sea of Tranquility's latest installment ranking Todd Rundgren's solo records, so I had to check it out, being a huge power pop fan...she knows her stuff surprisingly well for someone who probably wasn't even born yet when a lot of the bands were around, and she mentioned some of my favorites...but one omission that surprised me was no mention of Dwight Twilley, who just died recently, BTW, and who I was lucky enough to see around the time "Girls" was released as a single...she should definitely find the first two, though, "Sincerely" and "Twilley Don't Mind". They're both masterpieces with irresistible songwriting and Dwight's voice is a phenomenon in itself...VERY unique with just beautifully rich textures, and I don't know how he did it. ANYWAY, you can't be that much into power pop without being exposed to him at some point. Which leads me to do what I had intended to do and what she requested. I know it won't be easy, but I'll try to come up with my top ten list quickly. Of course I love Badfinger, especially one of the first true power pop songs, "No Matter What" and the Todd Rundgren produced "Baby Blue" and "Day after Day", plus the other seminal power pop band The Raspberries had some of the greatest radio hits like "Go All the Way", "Tonight", "I Wanna Be with You" and "Overnight Sensation", all masterpieces, but I was thinking more in terms of full albums and I think their stuff is somewhat inconsistent...the ones I picked are what I consider, basically, listenable all the way through without a lot of filler. O.K. in random order I guess:
    Eve's Plum "Cherry Alive"
Cheap Trick "Cheap Trick" (produced by Jack Douglas)
    Dwight Twilley "Sincerely"
The Posies "Frosting on the Beater"
Todd Rundgren "Something/"Anything" (which included the song many consider THE definitive and possibly the FIRST power pop song "Couldn't I Just Tell You")
    Jellyfish "Spilt Milk"
    Sparks "Kimono My House"
    The Sweet "Desolation Blvd."
    The Grays "Ro Sham Bo"
    Squeeze "Argy Bargy"

Hello fantastic video on Power Pop, which is a genre I don’t know well. As I live in France, I used to read Rolling Stone magazine in the 80s To try to get other inspirations for music. In 89, they published an excellent review on « Stolen Wishes » by the Shoes. I ordered it in the USA as it was not distributed in Europe and loved it. It is a cd and I don’t think it has been pressed on vinyl. I still have it. This band is Power Pop for me. I found two other albums (cheap and no so much collected here) from them : Black Vinyl Shoes and Shoes present Tense. I love the Posies : thanks for presenting the second album I don’t have. Recently, as I was member of a French vinyl club, I received in May 2019 an excellent album that could be in that section « Out Of The Box » by the Young Sinclairs. They are from Virginia, USA. Take care. Bruno

Thank you for the kind words, Bruno, and I'm so glad you liked this video! I really need to find Black Vinyl Shoes on vinyl . They were so fantastic! The Posies had so many wonderful albums. Glad you are also a fan of them. I will need to look up the Young Sinclairs. I appreciate the recommendation! Cheers!
