PHO Rounds: Alcohol Risk and Policy: Minimum Legal Drinking Age

  • The minimal legal drinking or minimal legal purchasing age are among the most prevalent alcohol control policies, restricting availability for certain age groups. This PHO Rounds gives an overview of the history and status quo of the minimum legal drinking age (MLDA) in different regions of the world. It will also summarize research that support increases in the MLDA and recent public debates on increasing (e.g., Estonia) or decreasing the MLDA (e.g., Lithuania).
    By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
    • Define the different variants of minimum legal drinking age (MLDA)
    • Describe the major arguments for a MLDA of 20 years from a PH perspective
    • List the long-term effects of MLDA
    • Identify the role of MLDA in an integrate alcohol control policy
