  • Over the last decade, rates of infectious syphilis have been rising in Canada, along with a resurgence of congenital syphilis. Timely screening, diagnosis and treatment can prevent serious adverse outcomes, including congenital syphilis. This session uses an interactive, case-based format to review syphilis screening and treatment recommendations from the National Advisory Committee for Sexually Transmitted and Blood-Borne Infections (NAC-STBBI). It discusses the interpretation of syphilis tests, including novel point-of-care tests, and provides an approach to staging syphilis infections. Dr. Chittle will share syphilis resources for healthcare providers from the Public Health Agency of Canada.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
    • Identify and implement national screening and treatment recommendations for syphilis in their public health practice
    • Explain the role of epidemiologic information, clinical exam findings, and the interpretation of test results in the diagnosis of syphilis
    • Support the treatment and follow-up of individuals diagnosed with syphilis infections using national clinical recommendations
    Presenter(s): Andrea Chittle
