i love your videos! i've been obsessed with OK Go's music videos since the beginning of the internet (or so it seems) and i recently saw your Grimes video which totally opened my eyes to the beauty and complexity of her work. love your stuff! glad you're giving the lads some attention.
About 6 months ago I fell into the OK Go spiral and ended up watching the Upside down and Inside out video (plus all the behind the scenes stuff) like a million times. I think I even watched it so frequently I saw a pineappleboyfilms comment in there about the lenses used during filming ;) Great video, Jake! Looking forward to other Creative Obsession videos!
It’s amazing to think that I’ve known about these guys for almost a decade. They did nice work to get featured in the Smithsonian magazine, a documentary, and a movie. Nice work as always Jake.
I was a big fan of your cinematic study guide series Jake, even though I subbed for POPS.But I have to say I think I adore this even more than the study guides. I have watched this three times now, I love the positive and passionate focus on such a prominent and yet hard to grasp concept that is Creative Obsession. It has a healthy balance between visual and auditory explanation and engagement as well. Plus you sent me down a rabbit hole of OK GO music videos for the first time in 7 years, so thanks for that :). Oh and P.S I love hearing the genuine joy and humor in your narration throughout the video!
What's wrong with obsession? Does all of their song's have to outdo the previous? Obsession is one of my favorites. Hell you don't see many others making videos with printers like that
i love this video. i love it when okgo is appreciated in any way but this was great, even if it was a little short (which probably makes it better, leave out the bits that arent relevant)
The Wintergatan Marble Machine is the veritable _definition_ of Creative Obsession! Plz document him! Although, you may want to hold off until he actually completes "Marble Machine X", a work in progress...
Great idea for a video. A friend showed me a bunch of OK Go videos and they're pretty insane. Interesting hearing your take on all of it. Anyway, cool format, hope we see more videos like this in the future!
To be honest, I've always thought that Damian was the only one driving these videos. Everyone else seemed to be humoring him for the good of the band. In the end, Damian's vision was right and has propelled OKGo to where they are today...but it's not about the music much anymore. Afterall, they ARE a band. I admit that I would have never followed OKGo if not for the videos. And that's why it works.
The Ok Go rude goldberg machine was a single take/ single shot video. It took many attempts to get a single take for the video but the video was not separate parts put together.
This was so good. I love how much you love this band because I love it just as much. And besides just making amazing videos, their music is fantastic as well.
Yeah, the first time I watched one of their videos was through a friend showing me, and of course it was the Zero-Gravity video. I remember seeing him and thinking, "Weird that he doesn't look too excited right now." And I'm glad I got to see you explore it further and expose me to something I wasn't quite thinking of looking further into myself. I hope that my creativity doesn't ever reach that point, where I'm forcing others to do something that I'm in love with, but they find miserable or almost torturous.
Did you just say, "A little much?" I'm not sure I understand what those words even mean- we are talking about *OK GO* here! So they put a few pianos and guitars in the desert, and risked their lives learning to do stunt-car tricks... *I* can accept that with awe, reverence, and a tingling giggity feeling in my tummy. A little much, you say?? Maybe a nice Carpenters or a Brady Bunch Kids video was what you meant to watch? 😉
Fantastic Jake! I'll sheepishly admit that I wasn't, like, suuuper excited about the channel just being film study stuff. Nevermind all that, I just want to say this was a great video.
So all it'd take for me to start a channel/monetize is practise/perfect my editing skills and voice-over my oppinion by using pre-existing material from the internet? (videos from TED, UA-cam, documentaries, etc) ... I know imitation is the biggest form of compliment, but here originality is flying out the window.
I thought I was the only one who saw that they're really starting to notice this hole they dug for themselves, I honestly feel sorry for them because they can't go back and be simple, it has to be some off the wall can't believe so crazy video, and absolutely no focus on music.
I know this video was posted 6 years before I found it, but think it provides a skewed and presumptuous view about Andy's feelings about making the band's videos. This resulted in a few of your viewers believing that he might actually quit. The implication that Damian makes all the decisions and Andy is dragged along, is only supported by showing Andy at several low moments during the Upside Down and Inside Out shoot: at the beginning, while he feels anxiety; after the first weightless experience, which others also found uncomfortable; and then at the end when he was feeling really crappy -- so all the worst instances, for him, during that shoot. I'd like to point out two things to balance that. First, even the aerial acrobats stated that "the the first flight was very uncomfortable", made them feel "sick", and they wondered what they were "going to have to endure for another three weeks". Members of the film crew puked 58 times. As they got used to weightlessness and the medications (which may not have worked as well for Andy, for all we know, at least by the end) they did better, but then began to have a "cumulative effect" after days of doing this. Damian actually blacked out momentarily, and Trish said she felt like she almost did. (I'm taking these quotes from BTS videos about the shoot.) Before the flight, Andy admits that it is not unusual for him to stress over things, but then end up really enjoying himself. Sadly, motion sickness or medication side effects may have made a difference with UDIO. Secondly, when I watch all their BTS videos, for ALL the different videos, I see Andy being just as enthusiastic and active a contributor as any other member, such as his comments about how the chaotic dog moments worked, during White Knuckles. Just because Damian is their front man, in the habit of doing most of the talking, does not mean that all the ideas are his. Remember that Andy is also a programmer who has designed apps. That creative and technical background is bound to have influenced their sound and visual processes. Tim and Dan also had fun performing funny skits in the past, so also creative men. Back on the subject of physical endurance during video shoots, I also saw Damian state that holding the dance poses began to hurt, during the Obsession shoot. Sorry for the long comment, but on top of all the "why does Andy look angry" comments I've seen (because the guy has deep-set eyes, for Pete's sake) I just felt your video presents and unhelpful (and unproven) opinion about how he feels, and whose fault it is.
Schuyler Neal Yeah. When you’re obsessed enough to make personal expression your profession you have to figure out a way to make it financially sustainable.
pineappleboyfilms not aw! im never ever ever sell'n out! ever! you can't make me with your silky convincing words! i make my songs & junk and wont ever make money off it cause that'd make me a sellout, its about the music mann, not the kia soul sponsership, and the printer paper sponsership, and the views and ad-revinue, i even dont run no ads nohow on me own videos so the machine cant profit off my soul, cause my music videos are my soul, thats what my passion is brothermann, not a bunch of colorful doodads buping into eachother in timelaps! making money off ur art means the mann is making money off whats inside you😲 which, by the transitive proporty of Maslo, makes okay ok a band of prostidudes who the youtube ad-revinue executives and their sponsors, metiphoricly, jam cold icecream scoopers up their cabooses and hollow out their insides to fill them with rolls of quarters on the dollar then after finishing leave them their shatterd like the slew of broken piggy banks they are. but they come back, they always come back cause their adiction to the thrill of being scooped and the atention they didnt recive from their fathers they go out again get a bunch of difrent colorful doodads and timelaps that just so they can get the release of feeling that frostycold icecream scoop carv against the insides of their stomachs, metaphoricly.🍨 but to each their own so more power to them on the twilight of their journey and may they rest undistirbed on their mounds of one dollarbills stained with the blood of colorful paint filed baloons😴 i liked them better before they chainged their name from Vampire Weekend🕶 always remember young Simba, speelling is of gr8 imprtans when typing wit ur thmb & misreading mispelled words is the highest form of satire, which as we all kno is the highest form of comedy, of which is the lowest artform ,words to live by😢
Different values man. They couldn't have paid for the 0G video if they didn't do sponsored videos before that, like The One Moment and Needing/Getting. Do you want that?
If you're already pretty familiar with OK Go, the video basically starts at 1:16
ehrenmann
gosh, Andy, bless his heart. It does sometimes feel like he might be the first one to leave the band because he can't keep up anymore.
Coming from their song called obsession
It's a shame it couldn't be featured lol
Coz obsession wasn’t out yet lol
I met Andy at a McDonald's before a show and he was a really cool guy! He talked to me, answered a few of my questions, and took a picture with me
i love your videos! i've been obsessed with OK Go's music videos since the beginning of the internet (or so it seems) and i recently saw your Grimes video which totally opened my eyes to the beauty and complexity of her work. love your stuff! glad you're giving the lads some attention.
If only you had waited long enough that obsession would be in this lol
Poor Andy. Now I hoping that the band remains fulfilling enough for Andy to stick with it.
0:15 Honestly watching Andy's mad dash for his seat before the gravity comes back is my favorite moment of the video.
Finally someone noticed Andy always looks like he got stuck with it

Until... Obsession...
so true...
But....that's just a bunch of printers, cool sure but compared to this it's not that great
have you seen the behind the scenes?, obsession took way more work than upside down inside out
What's wrong with obsession? Does all of their song's have to outdo the previous? Obsession is one of my favorites. Hell you don't see many others making videos with printers like that
You pushed me down the rabbit hole of watching too many OkGo videos along with some BTS as well
i love this video. i love it when okgo is appreciated in any way but this was great, even if it was a little short (which probably makes it better, leave out the bits that arent relevant)

Dammit Jake now I have to go listen to all OK GO's songs!!!
Great video tho
This was linked to me on the music video for their song called “Obsession”
More of this kind of stuff my man, this was great!
Great idea for a video. A friend showed me a bunch of OK Go videos and they're pretty insane. Interesting hearing your take on all of it.
Anyway, cool format, hope we see more videos like this in the future!
Awesome video. One of my all-time favourite filmmakers talking about one of my all-time favourite bands.
Love this format and subject matter Jake! Great work on providing an interesting perspective!
This is really well made
Yep. This was a great video. Would love to see more of this format.
I love all their videos but Upside Down Inside Out is my favourite.
I like where this channel is going

I actually really dig their music, too. The videos are exceptional, but I listen to them all the time.
Jake. Please, please don't ever stop creating such wonderful content.
Thank you.

This is a great idea for a series! And a great pilot episode.
It’s obsession...
This was so good! I'd love to see more stuff in this series.
Andy is cuter than cute
He should have done a face-palm after that last line.
Did you just say, "A little much?" I'm not sure I understand what those words even mean- we are talking about *OK GO* here! Andy is the guy who liked the band in the beginning and is now just kind of stuck... poor guy.
Poor Andy.
Fantastic Jake!
I'll sheepishly admit that I wasn't, like, suuuper excited about the channel just being film study stuff. Nevermind all that, I just want to say this was a great video.
Great video! The Wintergatan Marble Machine videos seem kinda similar to this...
True, that guy and Damian seem like they both have that childlike excitement for what they do
@@donuyy Do you mean Tim?
@@fettycheese2498 it's been a while, but I think I meant Damian. Always seemed like a big creative force
Stellar video Jake! I really got a kick out of this
Thanks for this great video!
nice, I'm getting a real nerdwriter vibe from this.
attckonutube I love that guy.
AWESOME. Great idea for a series.
Have you seen Mute Math's "Typical" because it was impressive #DrummingSkittles
And they just came out with their song Obsession
I'm still trying to understand how they paid for this video. This is so amusing.
Great video :D
Fun concept! 👍
LOVE, LOVE THIS!
Hey, it's the Korg Volca guys
This is great!
*-It’s Obsession-*
I enjoyed this. Very much so.

That's all you'd need to do.
won't forget them on zero gravity
You missed playing OK Go's song obsession
Ok go looks like if coldplay was your weird uncle
Hope you don't mind me asking but how are the PoPS DVD's coming along?
Just sent out the masters.
Nice! Thank you!
Awesome video and blahblah, but hey, what's that song at the end with the harmonica?
(I'm not rude, just bad at words...)
lol Andy
I thought I was the only one who saw that they're really starting to notice this hole they dug for themselves, I honestly feel sorry for them because they can't go back and be simple, it has to be some off the wall can't believe so crazy video, and absolutely no focus on music.

sup Jake
id say its more of an obsession for attention and ad revenue😢
