I remember first catching this music video back in the 90's and being totally captivated by the sound. Unmade Bed from the Sonic Nurse album has a similar feel, these guys are geniuses.
i think about this song all the time i'm a pumpkins fan but have found myself in love with alot of sonic youth songs. i love the feeling this band's song give truly magical
I still remember the night this video popped up on 120 minutes. Without a doubt one of the finest songs of this or any day. It dreamy pacing makes me miss being a music addicted high schooler.
Sonic Youth is "musician's mucic." As a musician, what a true statement. This band has changed my life and outlook of it. I am just glad that I found them so early in my life. Thanks for posting!
I ow the feeling. I remember watching this on JBTV in Chicago back in 1995. I was my mid-twenties :-) Guess I better start checking out nursing homes. lol!
Every full moon, like today, this song lingers in my mind throughout the day. It strikes a chord in my heart and makes me feel sad, happy and compassionate all at the same time.
I can't believe I forgot about this song... Thank you Yeah Yeah Yeah's for reminding me about it and educating a new generation of people about Sonic Youth and how real music should be
sometimes in life, experiences coincide with certain songs and can become permanently ingrained in our psyche. Especially where hard drugs are involved. I recall tripping (almost beyond words) on particularly powerful shrooms one early fall evening in Boston MA, the year was 1995; the song was The Diamond Sea. I shall never, ever forget it.
It's amazing, the Youth are as vital as ever. They are not perfect but they've put out at least 2 great records in the 80s, the 90s and the 00s. It's a new decade and here's hoping they can keep on keeping on.
Awww, I saw them play this live the same year in Ohio. They dedicated it to Kim Deal that night. Best 20 minutes of my life man! They also played Disappearer and Lee sang. Swoon!
SOnic youth is amazing. definitely isn't for everyone, but they have MASTERED precision through feedback, and as a classical musician myself, they've created something i'm sure I'll never hear again
This is probably my favorite song of all time. I'm a long time Sonic Youth fan, but everytime I listen to this one makes me love this fucking band even more. I remember buying "Washing Machine" and listening to all 19 minutes of this song for the first time. Most artists can only hope to ever be as cool and relevant as these fuckers!!!!
I have such a love hate relationship with this song and thsi band. It's so good but the nostalgia that is gleans from me is so painful. Takes me way back to high school and even a little before that. In this video, there are clips when SY played Lolopalooza 1994. I saw them there with Hole and Beck. God that was great.
Everytime i hear soni youth i get high, and i've acutally listen this same song high and the trip is awsome, u get to feel every note of this song in every part of ur head
i miss this group- every few years, waiting in anticipation for a new album. ill have to look at the website, and do some catching up. i miss their weirdness, their aloofness, their strange tunings, how they might yank you from anger on one track to tears on the next. i still have a mag article titled: "sonic youth- they could have been huge, but chose to be different" or similar.
"Tearjerker" by the Peppers was for Kurt. Pearl Jam wrote a song for Layne Staley. I think "Immortality" may just be about death in general. Kim Gordon has gone on record about Cobain's friendship, and her feelings that he was almost like a surrogate son for her and Thurston. Sonic Youth was responsible for Nirvana's signing to Geffen.
I'm pretty sure this is as long as the video is. There's a Spike Jonze DVD of most all the videos he directed and it was this short on there, and it was always this short from what I can remember the couple of times it played on MTV.
I just know that these guys were very close friends of Kurt, and that they were devastated by his fall and death. It's an epic song at a time where Kim and Thurston were dealing with the death of a friend and pupil. It's always open to interpretation. I think about being 14 again when I hear it. I think it's more about losing, loving, and getting old than it is about any particular person. But I am sure that losing their friend had a devastating effect on the band's mood and effected them.
Look into his eyes and you will see That men are not alone on the diamond sea Sail into the heart of the lonely storm And tell her that you'll love her eternally **tear**
my sluppy mind unravelled once when i heard them. i had a swim in the diamond sea once too, it was boring, i tapered off at 53.25 drunk on hedge wines and bramble pie.
you would love "Relax", the very last studio album of a spanish indie group (now split) called Los Piratas. Its main vocal and songwriter, Ivan Ferreiro, is doing a solo career and his music might remind you of Radiohead, with some cool effects from sintetizers and electronic loops. Just a suggestion, enjoy it!
@pjfislord They released two versions: The 19:36 version is on Washing Machine, but there's a 25:49 version on The Destroyed Room: b-sides and rarities. It's a lot more...experimental, than their other albums. You can get it off amazon, or, of course, torrent it.
@southparkster93 Thurston, Kim, Perry, Kim, Lou, John, Willie, Warren, Margot, Janis, Ian (which one;)?), Paul, Frank...to try and negate the Beiber and Gaga :)..how many more to blot them from existence...?
Eddie Vedder explicitly said that Immortality was not about Cobain. But all those bands, friends or not, would have been impacted by his death. Is it possible that some of those songs dealt with feelings and thoughts emerging from the death
i think this song might be about cobain. "washing machine" came out immediately after his death, and sonic youth have said that a few songs on the record were about their friend.

this tune is great !!!!totally makes me sit back and think for some reason, great tune
One of the best bands EVER!!!!!!!
this is such a fucking jam. shame what a sad turn music has taken over the years... long live meaningful music. peace
The first time I heard this song my ears were opened to what music could be, and I'll never forget the impact its had on my life.
i think about this song all the time i'm a pumpkins fan but have found myself in love with alot of sonic youth songs. i love the feeling this band's song give truly magical

I'm nearly 30 and I only discovered them a few weeks ago!
Every full moon, like today, this song lingers in my mind throughout the day. It strikes a chord in my heart and makes me feel sad, happy and compassionate all at the same time.
Sonic Youth really does it for me! One of the most innovative bands ever!
What a throwback. Thanks for uploading this way back when.
Sonic Youth es La mejor banda del planeta!!!! y esta rola rifa! saludos desde México

They are even cooler live. I don't really listen to them much in my spare time, but I saw them live in 2004 and they pretty much blew me away.
one of the best rock'n'roll bands of all times.

This never gets old. what a band.

Good song, i used to love it when i was like 9. This is my first time hearing it in 12 years. wow.
this song has been stuck in my head for over a decade.
Perhaps their best song ever

brings me back memories that are amazing..
my favorite sy¨s song
SOnic youth is amazing. definitely isn't for everyone, but they have MASTERED precision through feedback, and as a classical musician myself, they've created something i'm sure I'll never hear again
This song always makes me emotional. Beauty in reverb and feedback.

this song reaches lyrical and musical perfection...and a great wah wah pedal by the way..
Beautiful... I wish they made the full 20 minute version, though...
Going to see these guys in 2 days!
I can't feel disappointed!
sonic youth members are now in their 50s, i guess even older. you can never be to old to rock, if you still have the spirit in you
I have such a love hate relationship with this song and thsi band. It's so good but the nostalgia that is gleans from me is so painful. Takes me way back to high school and even a little before that. pure and highest form of expression, to call it a song, simply doesnt do it justice!
Heard this song first time on KROQ, hav loved it since, they dont make them like this anymore
Really? Because when I listen to it all everything comes to together and is perfect.
I know the YYYs version isn't as good but I see it as a homage. I respect that they respect good artists.
...great, just for my memories!
This is just so intoxicating.
Look into his eyes and you will see
That men are not alone on the diamond sea
Sail into the heart of the lonely storm
And tell her that you'll love her eternally
**tear**

god i love this song.. it gets so phazy and electric... like a drunk or high thought.
@Anotherrnumber there's also an effect like a wah wah, but instead makes the ya ya sound and is aptly named, 'the ya-ya'
Beautiful!
oh man i love this song

whatever it is I bet it's really loud and awesome live.

@southparkster93 Thurston, Kim, Perry, Kim, Lou, John, Willie, Warren, Margot, Janis, Ian (which one;)?), Paul, Frank...to try and negate the Beiber and Gaga :)..how many more to blot them from existence...?
This was the original vid, directed by none other than Spike Jonze in '95.

i think this song might be about cobain. "washing machine" came out immediately after his death, and sonic youth have said that a few songs on the record were about their friend.
@Anothernumber I think this is an Electro-Harmonix/ Sovtek Small Stone phase shifter.
I totally agree!
sonic yoouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuth é fodaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!
