Bernstein is a little out of synch., the tempo is not right and it sounds a bit chaotic..for comparison try sir Eliot Gardiner with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, or ofcourse the master's version of Herbert von Karajan.. thanks for this one though.
Sir Colin Davis' tempo of this is my favorite but seeing Bernstein conduct what I feel is one of the all time great chorus' is nothing short of amazing!
Actually, I believe I read somewhere that this mass was composed in a more baroque style (Terrasse Dynamics) in order to please constanza who apparently loved baroque music.
@TFreckle That's more than possible. While listening to this part of the mass for the first time, I thought to Bach's crucifixus from the B minor mass ... This song is maybe a tribute from Mozart to the master of baroque music ?
I've always figured this part to be a 2-section movement. The first part being Jesus' steps carrying the cross, the other being the silent painful thoughts of the croud watching - in their faith apologizing for condemning him to death.
@ AlexOrganMusic ...sorry to correct you - it is NOT St Stephens Cathedral in Vienna - i live in Vienna and i would know if it were ... it is the "Basilika von Waldsassen"
I agree with the guy who thinks this is just a hair too fast. The text is begging God to have mercy on us, so in my opinion it's most powerful when the tempo is as slow and painful as you can get away with.
This is probably my favorite section of this mass. Very well performed by everybody, but, as others have said, it should be a bit slower. I think Karajan's tempo is much better for this. All other sections of this performance are just about flawless, though.
Yes, this is the last thing i wanna hear before i die....This.
My favorite movement of this Mass.

Música aterradora.
para mí es sublime, grandiosa, Y sí, por momentos aterradora!!!
It's the part that I like most from Mozart's Grand Mass for sure!
Such emotion and beauty
ME too... so profound...

This Qui Tollis is derivated of a part ( chorus ))of "Israel in Egypt" by Handel: "The people Shall Hear and Be Afraid" They are very similar.
E' musica di Alessandro Stradella

The beauty of the passus durisculus...
3:20 ... He conducts with his shoulders! :)
