If there is an afterlife it is surely bulging at the seams with musical talent, Arleen Auger Leonard Bernstein Mozart........This performance is just unbelievably wonderful.
And I will add that Arleen Auger was probably the best Mozart soprano ever! No one has ever sung Mozart as beautifully and cleanly as Auger. God rest her soul!
Certainly the most accomplished soprano of the higher, lighter Mozart. It's hard to ignore the brilliance of other Mozart sopranos like Carol Vaness and Kiri Te Kanawa, in the full lyric Mozart parts.
Apart from just about the most beautiful soprano voice this world has heard, can't help noticing the absence of affectation, strange facial contortions, as though she is simply speaking to us, just as natural, while producing those incredible vocal gymnastics. I don't know if it means anything at all, but have noticed the same thing in one I'd consider her male equivalent, tenor Jussi Björling.
Bernstein's smile tells us, besides the celestial music, that he has an angel onstage with perfect pitch who glides through her notes with the greatest of ease. Glory be to God for this wonderful music!
It absolutely is spiritual...she radiates an immeasurable sense of calm and bounty (achieved by her seamless breath control) so the listener feels the presence of an angel..who is saying "I can cope with anything, any ill that befalls you, I am there for you" - wonderful wonderful wonderful
The Annick Massis version comes close, but this is just perfect. She is so perfectly in control of her voice and does not overdo it. She also has such a graceful stage presence about her. Beautiful.
This is why I LOVE Mozart. This unfinished Mass proves how much he loved Constanze, his beloved wife. This also proves what a great singer she was as it was composed specifically for her voice. Even though the Mass was not finished, she sung it one time in Salzburg when they were visiting family. Mozart was simple a GENIUS!
I played this piece for my son in his first day at our home, after leaving hospital, 2 days after his birth. Watching that little part of me in front of my very eyes, the perfect 'incarnation' of my love for my wife, listening to Mozart, was probably one of the most powerful impressions I will have in my lifetime.

There is always an incantation against wicked witches and spells. Surely this is one of the liveliest, loveliest, and most unassuming singers I've ever had the privilege of hearing in concert.
and some people say she looked like a said person! she was sad with all the business side of the music world, but she was a happy sould, a very happy one! one a happy sould and person can sing like this!!!!!
The best "Incarnatus est" I ever heard. This is very first class!!! Its so sad, that Arleen Auger already so long is passing away. Such a voice never is on Earth.
Arleen and Lorraine Hunt Lieberson could have been an incredible pair: soprano/mezzo with an amount of musicianship and sensitivity not often found in even the best of singers. It's almost as though they allowed the music to sing itself - they opened their instruments, and what showed forth was ethereal!! We are blessed to live in an age where we don't have to take anyone's word for it - it is there for our ears to hear . . .
Even though the vocal quality and beauty is unsurpassed, what makes the performance absolutely unique and deeply moving is in my view the sheer spirituality. Such music to such a text depends on an often undefined spiritual quality to reach a sufficient deep expression. This is an experience never to be forgotten.
Notice at 2:23 that she DOES NOT take a breath as most others are forced to do. Auger simply completes the phrase with no strain at all. Amazing! To my ears, this is one of the many reasons why Auger's interpretation of this aria is the reference standard against which all other are judged.
Liebe!
What an outstanding performance by Arleen Auger. When I listen to the Mass, I look forward to this especially (of course, I love the Kyrie too and really the whole work).
Thank you for posting this fantastic version. How sad that Arleen lost her life when she was so inspirational and versatile. Her singing sounds and has great feeling. Mozart the genius and Bernstein are perfect companions. Thank goodness for this music to inspire us.
Auger was a miracle of vocal technique and production, so much so that she managed to make Bernstein's typically slow and over-indulgent tempo manageable. But seeing the great singer in this clip, the thoughts of my friend Caroline's sister in Chicago come to mind: "Listen, If ye guna ged anywhere in the Miss America Pageant, ye've gotta have BIG HAIR!"

I have all of Auger's recordings of Mozart's Great Mass. This one if my favorite version. I was told that this performance was her "last swan song," thus I think is why this version (esp the Kyrie), IMO, sounds the most passionate. I truly believe at this point she knew she was dying. And yet, her voice is still as beautiful and strong as ever, despite befalling such an illness, which is really remarkable to me.

Arleen is a Seraphim and her celestial voice is heavenly.
She left this earth much to soon, and there is no soprano who can ever compete with her.
