All my paternal family from Great Grandfather back,who moved to Greenwich in the late 1800s were all born and lived around Romney Marsh and Ashford. All farm workers. My Great Grandfather managed to go from farm labouerer to Tenant farmer in the village of Newchurch. I'm hoping to visit and check out the churchyard to see if I can find any relatives gravestone.

They ended up working on the Thames as Lightermem, including her father, until the working life of the Thames came to an end. Hi, The cemetery is pretty big; it's whether they were buried there (my guess they were), if they may have had a headstone, or something simpler in wood that may not have survived the test of time. Very enjoyable and well made video. I know the area of Hythe and Dymchurch well. I grew up from child to young adult spending my wonderful summer holidays (when UK summers where hot and 4/5 months long). My beloved late mother used to take me to Pipers holiday camp (not sure if it is still there) and later through family recommendation, we started to take our holidays at New Beach Caravan Park (back then it wasn't owned by a 'multinational' leisure company as is now) owned by a family who lived above the clubhouse building. It was also neighboured by the old Neptune Pub (which I believe has also been taken over by the same company. There was no pedestrian crossing outside the camp (but beck in the 70's there was hardly any traffic) so you just dodged across to the beach with its old 'curved' sea defence walls which have since been covered by defence boulders...even the wooden bus shelters have gone (which gave the feel you were in the countryside).I have nothing but great, happy childhood memories of escapism from London and adventures in that wonderful place. One being my niece, I and two dogs walking from Hythe road New Beach, through country lanes all the way up to Lympne Castle. Such a wonderful nostalgic time.
Thank you for your kind comments, and I think there are sections of this road trip where very little has changed - you can almost see the location used as a setting of a 1970's throwback drama. It revels in nostalgia. In fact, Janis's parents are taking a few days break from their home near Herne Bay to a holiday park in Greatstone. Pipers is still there. I first visited Romney Marsh in 1980 with my soon-to-be wife, who knew it well, and I fell in love with it. We quit London and moved down in 1985. I wouldn't live anywhere else.

I have since returned from living in Spain and after much house viewings etc across west sussex and Kent, I find that I have gone full circle after buying house in Canterbury!. So I do plan to visit Dymchurch (and Pipers Camp) hopefully soon, after all these years.

I remember Greatstone station on rh&dr railway. Colours of engines have changed from when I was a kid. Grandpa had a couple of speedboats used to take along to boat club Remembered an episode of Goodies being filmed down there Jimmy White one of the Great Train Robbers was caught down there
Chris, Wow, that's amazing, excellent memory. I never knew about the Jimmy White connection (strange twist of fate, while looking into the Great Train Robbers, never realised one of them, Douglas Gordon Goody, relocated to Mojácar after he was released from prison. We visited relatives there about a month ago.) We love the whole area. Janis's parent regularly take their motorhome from Herne Bay, down to the caravan park there for a getaway. Part of Mulberry Harbour was just out to sea from here Remember Romney Sands camp being called Maddison’s Camp and the railway pre passing loop. They only just got The Bug ( I think it was called ) First diesel loco back then. Passenger trains used not to be taken right round the loop at Dungeness. Engine would be disconnected, ran round to start of loop and reversed back up to rear of train. A weekly rover ticket back then in 70s cost I think £7 yes no typo Used to get through to beach via sandy path by house with green roof Always remember the main road being concrete and sound of cars going along it
Chris, sorry for the delay, I thought I had replied. Not, sure the amusements are still their, was the boat club by the RNLI lifestation? Scanning through Google maps, there are a few new builds along the coast road, so I fear for the worst. Oh the £7 ticket, think how much a pint would have cost, must have been 75p? Fabulous video. I have a lot of family in New Romney. Next time you’re down it’s worth turning right on St Mary’s Road before you enter the town. It’s a long meandering road that eventually reaches the small village of St Mary’s in the Marsh. The Star Inn is nice and the church is beautiful. Thanks for showing the Marsh. Al x

You see some strange things in Kent. I remember seeing Llamas, or they could have been Alpacas, in a field once as we were driving through. We thought, 'that's a little strange'. I’ll have to check the sandy/Pebble quality of Littlestone/Greatstone beaches because close by beaches are both sandy and pebbles much like the northeast Kent coast beaches where I live. That the interesting thing about our coastline, you're never sure what you are going to get, we've got it all from the golden sands of Margate, Ramsgate, Broadstairs, and the sweeping dunes of Camber, to the ankle-turning pebbles of Whitstable, Hythe and many more - but tell me this, have you ever skimmed sand? No - pebbles have their place 👍😀 The next road trip, another 2 parter, is due on the 16th, which means I need to start getting on with Saturday's video - madness 🙃

I think I prefer the French version of "Cinque Port", it makes more sense, "Five Ports", rather than the Anglicised version, but in future I'll refer to English pronunciation. I do love our Anglo-French History and recently came back from Dives-sur-Mer, where William the Conqueror left for England on that fateful day in 1066; it is a fascinating place, in fact, the whole of Normandy, and our intertwined history. Did you know that some of Norman Armada tried to land at Romney (there was no Old and New Romney at the time) but were beaten back. There were later repercussions after the main landing and battle of Hastings. Which is also partly why the church in NR is so big. I think one of William’s relatives took an interest (Bishop Odo?). The church was originally one of five. Also badly flooded in 1287? during storm. This is why the steps to church lead down due to build of sediment/shingle around church. Can still see the flood level on the pillars in the church.

I am interested in the Norman invasion and those that came before it and how they shaped the English language. It's astounding how much English is actually French or German.
